In know its cliche but I'm beginning to think the killer is the new kid. That or the woman with the podcast. How would it be if the woman who reports on these crimes is actually the one committing them.
The not so subtle references to the original Scream and a few of the other films. I like that they are using the same formula, just updated. I'm liking Emma more and more.. I'm not sure who the killer ia yet though. I'm having a hard time figuring it out.
Two episodes in and we're really moving in the right direction. So far, fantastic start to the show. Not an "MTV" feel to it at all. The acting isn't great but it's way better than I would have expected.
I'm honestly having such a fun time theorizing everything. I think Audrey & Emma are half sisters (with Audrey being Brandon's daughter). I'm also starting to wonder who the killer is, I feel like ruling out any adults (except for podcast girl) since I doubt they would able to use technology that well to figure out how to make fake phonecalls, texts and be that sneaky. I personally think its Audrey (who knows the truth about her father, hence the picture and wants revenge on Emma & her mother).
I loved that, I thought it was even better than the pilot. I thought killing someone without using a knife was a big nono though, as far as I remember the movies never did that. I'm also loving the constant references to the movies and other TV shows, normally I don't get them at all but in this show I get every one :) That ending with Emma and the caller was brilliant, so much like the movies!
But remember when Audrey and her girlfriend where talking and the slasher was looking up at them? So I don't think it's her....but she could be involved somehow
I think this episode was fairly decent. The characters are filling into their roles, the Brandon mystery is heating up and the killers motives are becoming more clearer
As far as charaxter tropes go, everyone is living up to their image and role: Emma- the innocent, "good girl" who just wants to do the right thing. Audrey- the aloof and brooding misunderstood character to watch out for Noah- the likeable nerd you want to root for Kieran- the mysterious stranger with a soft side and tragic past Will- the cheating boyfriend Riley- the other best friend Brooke- the inappropriate, seductress with a thing for older men and scandal Jake- the douchebag jock who just so happens to be thw biggest perve in town ... The list goes on
Among these characters, i would say the ones to watch out for is Will and Riley -Will's role is too generic. He doesnt have much of a personality and doesnt seem to be very close to the others (except for Emma and barely Jake) -Riley- she doesnt have a clearly defined role or huge impact in the "core group". A common trope for someone like her would be the "ditsy best friend" or "bully/mean girl". She hasnt proven to fit any od these yet. She is too fluid of a character because she hangs with the popular kids and schools biggest nerd; plus we dont know much about her. She is the definate wildcard.
Not only are the characters fitting into the roles nicely, but the killer is too. - The killer is sadistic, narcissitc and has a god complex. His murders are brutal and violent. He seems to be very full of himself when he taunts Emma with cryptic amd threatening phone conversations and even the police with a widespread video. Also, he uses mass media to broadcast his work throught snapchat and social media. He is also able to hack into everyone phone and security system, which gives him the ability to manipulate people and control surroundings. He is clever enough to do discreet surveillance and engage in counter-forensic measures to throw off both his victims and law enforcement. -All in all, this guy is NO joke.
I would also like to point out that the killer's motives were evelaed this episode - he clearly has a fascination with masks. He wears one to protect his identity and even throw off his victims (who wpuls react poorly and slowly to such a disturving and scary image). Only this time, he is more interested in the masks others wear. Given his last conversation with Emma, he is hell bent on destroying her mask and exposing her for her flaws. He seek to take off his victims "masks" , which os thele roles they hide behind and protect themselves with. He puts them in a vulnerable position ( mostly fear) and uses that time to unmask them ( kill) and expose them (way of death) - Take Bella's character for examplw. She is the popular and beautiful, damn near untouchable queen bee. All that falls apart when she is left alone, attacked and left for dead face down in a pool. By her death, he mask is taken off and her weakness- being human and insecure- is exposed - i also think we should take note of how the killer has a diverse MO. He kills by both stabbing and hanging. It also seems that he will continue to elfind more ways to kill with a gun and tree branch (seen in next episode preview). On criminal minds they call this phenomenon "evolving"; the killer is testing out different kill methods and will choose one that suits him (which i think will be stabbing)
The characters are going to continue to grow and flesh out and the killer is gonna get even more dirtier and sadistic before this is all over. No one is safe.
Great post! Just wanted to add that there's also the possibilty that there are two killers. ;) (if i remember correctly the films scream had also a killer duo)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

This is gonna be a lot of fun
Didn't he stab her first though?
ReplyDeleteI don't even watch this series, but your examination of the killings make me want to.
ReplyDeleteThanks. However, i gotta warn you: i could be overthinking it
ReplyDeleteTrue Blood ....she played Willa i think. ;)
