pretty good action and tension in the ep, but still some disbelief suspension required: like when the ship was trying to run silent and everyone onboard was walking in their socks and talking softly and everyone on the sub were yelling/arguing - absurd as it would be far more important for the sub environment to be silent as their sound is more of a danger of giving their location away as sound travels thru water easily, and even though exciting, the torpedo sequence was not believable as modern torpedoes would have sunk/damaged to ship as they track a target thru active/passive sonar to home in on target, as the torpedoes that the ship fired have similar capabilities as well so someone should've gotten a scratch.... still, made for an exciting sequence...
Webster's Online Dictionary has auto clips on its definition pages so users can hear what a word sounds like. . Now we have a video clip to illustrate the definition of arrogant. WOW.
I took the difference in behavior - disciplined quiet, vs yelling - as glaring evidence of the difference between the two crews. The guy in charge of the sub only barely knows what he's doing (and, I would suspect, is only still alive an kicking because of luck and surprise.
I thought that the reason the Nathan James wasn't picking up the sub was because of distance.
Checking to make sure I understand what you're saying. You're saying modern torpedoes lock on the same signal information the kid on the sub was listening to? (What was the guy that was supposed to be tracking the Nathan James doing to track them? Every time I looked at the screen he was just sitting there yelling.)
I gave my uncle the DVDs of the show. He served on a sub. He loves pointing out stuff like this.
Sorry, I had to add..... it occurred to me this morning that I really wish they had dealt with the sound in the sub environment as you mention. The crazy guy Captaining the sub doesn't really know what he's doing. I think it would have been far more interesting if the consequences of that error had played out on screen.
I agree that the Sub "Commander"/Cult Leader guy has a limited knowledge of what he's doing and it's a big stretch to get us to believe that he'd be proficient at running the operations of a submarine even with all of the fellow "believers" who I guess have some measure of training but similar lack of discipline/experience (with all the yelling etc) after six months (I think that's what they said) onboard something so technically advanced as a nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine... anyway I can overlook it for now as it didn't take me too far out of the episode. As far as the torpedoes, from what I've read/heard that modern ones can use the same passive sound signal info that the sonar operator is looking at to home in on a target., or they can fire the weapon in a general direction and then the active sonar in the weapon will locate/guide it to it's target. And they don't have to actually "hit" the ship to damage it, the torpedo just needs to explode close enough for the blast wave to do significant enough damage. Lol, the yelling guy tracking the Nathan James is the sub's sonar operator, and he was using the passive sensors to track the ship by the sounds the ship makes as it moves through the water, much like what the young guy on board the NJ was doing to track the sub. But most of the yelling probably occurred when the sub used its active sonar to pinpoint the NJ's position, but in doing so the ship was able to pinpont the sub's location as well - which is why subs don't like putting sound in the water (which was my problem with all the yelling onboard the sub)...
Thank you for that explanation. Honestly, (and embarrassingly), every second time I think about this I want to say the words "heat signature". I keep stopping myself, tho. LOL
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Loved it :)
