— Disney (@Disney) July 7, 2015On the eve of San Diego Comic Con, some very big Star Wars-related news has just broken: StarWars.com has announced that The Lego Movie filmmakers Chris Miller and Phil Lord have signed on to direct a Star Wars Anthology film, this one focusing on the early life of young smuggler Han Solo. Yes, everything really is awesome.
This new, as-yet-untitled film (Rogue One would actually be a pretty good name for this movie too, all things considered) will blast off on May 25, 2018, and Lord and Miller will be working from a screenplay co-authored by franchise stalwart Lawrence Kasdan (who co-wrote Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and the upcoming Force Awakens) and Lawrence’s son, Jon Kasdan (who has written for Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks). “We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said the Kasdans in a prepared statement. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.” Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, will produce the new movie.
With the big Star Wars presentation at this year’s San Diego Comic Con scheduled for Friday night and the D23 Expo just around the corner (in August), expect more details (like how this relates to the Star Wars Anthology film that Fantastic Fourdirector Josh Trank recently left) soon.

The filmmaker team, who write, direct and produce, are stepping up to helm a movie that will focus on a young Han Solo, according to sources.
Disney and Lucasfilm had no comment.

Set for May 25, 2018, the pic will focus on Solo’s days before he linked up with Luke, Obi-Wan and Leia. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is producing. Lawrence Kasdan is exec producing with Jason McGatlin.

I wish this had been made years ago, Josh Holloway would have made a perfect Han.
ReplyDeleteI will be glad to see how Han meets Chewie on screen and see his earlier smuggling days, which probably feature Lando too and maybe Boba Fett?!
ReplyDeleteI heard McGregor may reprise his role eventually too-wonder if it will be desperate film though or if some of the films will feature several back stories of characters who were always on the verge of meeting each other, but just never did until later, because how many films can there be??
Anyways it will be casting that makes or breaks this thing and there are only 2 actors that I know are comically"Ford" enough to pull it off (Josh Holloway and Karl Urban) and they are already too old and don't really look like him. And please don't consider Chris Pratt again.
I heard that McGregor might be in Rogue One, would make sense since it's about stealing the plans to the first Death Star and Obi Wan seemed to know an awful lot about it in "A New Hope"

ReplyDeleteIf so, he has been denying it. He just had an interview recantly in which he said he has yet to be approached, but would love to reprise the role! But of course I hope he's lying! :)
