For me, this was a long awaited episode. Once I learned about Virginia’s pregnancy I couldn’t wait to see how it going to play out and I was not disappointed one bit! It was was a whirlwind of an episode where we got to experience all nine months of the pregnancy and even the birth of little Lisa Johnson.
The episode skips ahead a few weeks to when Masters and Johnson practice have taken on a royalty case. When a royal couple that must have an heir are having trouble conceiving they turn to the practice for help. It was during this scene that we learn Virginia decided to have the baby, and this was a very sore spot for Bill. I wondered if it was a mix of emotions for him though. Was he upset because of the work or because she has having George’s baby? That was a lingering thought I had throughout the episode.
A comedic moment was watching Bill tell Libby about Virginia’s pregnancy, saying he had no idea about the whole thing. Libby even doubts that George is the father. What’s Libby thought process on this? Well, her only concern is how everyone else is going to perceive that the baby is Bill’s. Also, Libby was concerned that Bill would be more of a father to Virginia’s child than their own. Only time will tell on that one, but Bill and Virginia devise a plan that will stop any rumours of the baby being Bill’s. That plan is for Virginia to marry George in a sham of a marriage. It does take some convincing on George's part as he would have rather married for love and for the baby’s sake but that wasn’t the deal. From what I’ve seen on numerous other shows and movies, sham marriages don’t usually go as planned.
There was an amazing scene between Bill and his patient whom he discovered could have children. In an attempt to make the devastating news more bearable on his patient he had a rare heart to heart conversation. He tells her that the most rewarding relationship that he has is with his partner and not with his kids. Though the patient is led to believe that Bill is taking about Libby, it was apparent that he was talking about his relationship with Virginia. This coincides with Bill’s new hire getting on his nerves. It’s obvious that it’s only because she isn’t Virginia. His frustration leads him to making the mistake of taking on an interview about the book on his own. Needless to say that doesn’t go well for him. This is where that plan comes into play. Virginia and George get married, allowing her to be able to go back to work without the implication of the baby being Bill’s.
It’s not long before Virginia goes into labour. Bill arrives at the hospital to discover that Virginia is having second thoughts about the baby. He assures her that she will be amazing at being a mother and that they are where they are because of her. Bill’s amazing speech to her is ahead it’s time, essentially saying that she has a lot to offer her child because she is a career driven woman. It surprised me that he had that speech in him considering he seems to want Libby to tend to the house. Nonetheless it was a great scene!
In one episode we got to see the nine months of Virginia’s pregnancy and now I’m looking forward to next week’s episode. I do wonder how much time this show can afford to skip ahead. Before too long they will be in the 1970’s and if that’s the case I’m sure the book will be a huge hit! What did you think about Three’s A Crowd? Do you feel that Virginia’s marriage to George is doomed?
