Killjoys, “The Harvest,” was written by Aaron Martin and was directed by Michael Robison. Martin’s other credits include Saving Hope and Being Erica, and Robison’s very long list of credits include The Originals, Eureka, Nikita, and Kyle XY. I really felt like the show was hitting its stride with this episode. It’s definitely the strongest performance from both Aaron Ashmore as John and John Macfarlane as D’Avin. Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) continues to kick ass in this episode.
As the episode opens, D’Avin is going through the process of becoming a Killjoy, but he has one big hurdle – the psych evaluation. Those nightmares can’t be the product of a healthy psyche, right? John is faced with an even bigger reason not to be happy with D’Avin joining their team.
We find out that the Killjoys are treated to free drinks from friendly bartender Pree (Thom Allison), but the drinks aren’t quite as free as D’Avin thought – but he enjoys paying for them. It’s Harvester week and things get pretty rowdy in Westerly.
Both John and D’Avin make arrangements with two different women – John with N’oa (Elena Juatco) and D’Avin with Pawter (Sarah Power). Expect to see more of her in future episodes. Dutch agrees to go undercover to help John, and we learn that she has more talents. There’s also a great scene in which Dutch simply creates order out of chaos. John is still really struggling with D’Avin changing the dynamics of the team, and Dutch is worried about him. Look for a really great scene between John and D’Avin at the end of the episode.
I’m continuing to really like the look of this show created by the lighting and color palette of the cinematography. The show does a good job of avoiding too many special effects because, let’s face it, if you don’t have a budget to do them really well, they can really take away from this kind of show. I also like that the show does take some unexpected turns.
Here are a few dialogue teasers to keep you guessing:
“They don’t pay us to take it easy.”
“Keep your secrets or keep your life.”
“You should have made better choices.”
“This warrant ain’t worth my extra effort.”
“I’ll get us an eye…. Not literally!”
“If you stay, you die.”
“I have to go and see a girl about an ear.”
“I want us both to get away and have some fun.”
I really felt like all three leads hit their stride with this episode. The episode is well paced and still brings the on-going plots along – D’Avin learns something interesting, but Dutch doesn’t. Don’t forget to watch Killjoys tonight at 9/8c on Syfy!
Thanks for the preview! I'm a little bothered by the dynamics between John and D'Avin. Worried it will get worse with him being a Killjoy.
