Humans - Episode 1.06 - Review : "We Become One"
20 Jul 2015
Humans OB ReviewsAfter five tantalizingly tense episodes, Humans almost takes a subtle step back this episode, and focuses on the emotional beauty within and how that beauty shapes both Humans and Synths alike. The episode, as it neared its conclusion, stunned in the subtlest of ways - suggesting that we, Humans and Synths - can become one. Another highly successful episode for the series - the sixth episode showed us how electric the connection can be between two, whom are so similar - and how those connections could proceed to allow the co-evolution of both creations in the world today.
With the shock twist concluding last episode that Hobb was in fact, someone who wished for the more-than-Synth Synths to continue evolving and living in modern society, it seems the tables have now turned. With Fred using his capabilities to be on the run, Hobb is now the one chasing him again to persuade him he is for the good of humanity. Some of the lines here were so fragile and honest, further implying that Humans is an outstandingly unique show in its reputation to fascinate and inspire us to learn about the possibilities of the future. Once again, the writing on Humans is award-winning, and when the time comes, I'll be shocked if this doesn't pick up a few golden trophies.
Niska battling with her comforts as she warms to George was another tender step to the relationship that could occur between Humans and Synths, whilst there were currents of tension underlying these scenes, I'm almost glad they decided to make this episode more about this key development and how this could mould the future for generations to come. Planning for the show must have been crucial in the elegant production of each episode, the story is natural and pacing slight when it needs to be, for George's calm understanding balances upon Niska's child-like mentality, almost acting as George is a fatherly figure - teaching Niska, that, in fact, mostly all humans are not as evil as those she has encountered in her short, 9 year life. Some really, really interesting ideas about body language here too, and of course, more revelations about George's past, only making us care for his teachings more. Finally, Odi popping up again further questions his role in the show to come - will he have a place within Leo's group?
(Side Note - Emily Berrington (Niska) and William Hurt (George) continue to give staggering performances - actually, all the cast continue to shine in their equal ways.)
Karen Voss finally revealed her identity to Pete - but was it a wise move? This plot was largely unexpected when it was revealed, thus it's hard to give any detailed analysis, especially as it links to the other plots only vaguely - in terms of Voss isn't in the Synth group, yet is a Human-like-Synth, so the biggest secret remaining for the final two episodes is where she fits in regarding the group? Was she made by Hobb? Her further intrigue on Niska, whilst her confidence in revealing to Paul, may suggest she is for the good of these Synths. Let's hope so.
The Hawkins family really are quite a dramatic family aren't they, with Joe serving his punishment after his dirty scandals, the house is in reckoning and the children filled with scattered emotions. Humans works so well, because, it's all so very personal to each family anywhere - no, we may not all have a Father who cheated with a piece of technology, but we do all have arguments and secrets - and the integration of this 'parallel Synth world' doesn't let the producers get distracted over how a family would actually react. Laura's scenes with Mattie were, truly emotionally engaging (I'm sure many let the tears slide), and tied up all the thoughts of why this family were ever fractured.
This emotional fragility may have cryptically led to Mia waking from Anita's grasps, which obviously then made Leo wake from his dubious slumbers to decode and decipher how to bring Mia back A stand out during these scenes was Mattie - she had some witty lines and Lucy Carless(Mattie) showed off some flexible acting during this episode, having to portray many different emotions. As well as this, we began to understand more about Leo's past and where that drowning came from that has been hinted for weeks. For me, this was an absolutely incredible reveal - for I hadn't expected any of the information that was leaked, but I was still so interested in everything that was uncovered, especially how the group was created and that Anita was, in-fact, a Mother, rather than a girlfriend (Did anyone really expect that?). Whilst I am glad Mia is back from Anita, I'm sad we won't see anymore of Anita's sincere smiles or overly-long eye contact which made for hilariously tense television - but still, everything is happy, the Hawkins and the Synth Group have become one, rather than separated by their prejudices, and we can go and meet the others? Right? Right?!
Well, of course not.
Max's teasing observations when he looked over on the humanity that he saw could have been a foreshadowing of the death to come as he gazed over flowers and cards left for someone who had recently died. Whether Max's death is actually an end to the character, I'm not totally sure. Surely we need him to get the conclusion we all want? Or is he really gone, lost in the water? His sacrifice for Leo only further implicated his sense of Human awareness - how, in fact, he'd risk his life for someone to live and that his death was marked as both an end, and a beginning. Hope gone, a sense of dread rumbling - how will the group ever reconnect?
The sixth episode of Humans continued to represent its emotional and physical understanding within society today, with a beautiful, subtle step back, the show proceeds to removing its riddles and secrets, whilst deepening the wounds between each character - allowing the audience to really react when the tragic and unforgivably heartbreaking conclusion suggests death is so easy to come by - for anyone. But, with Humans and Synths now working hand in hand, is this a step forward in technology and human nature being together as one? The gaps between machine and man continue to dissolve...
What did you think of the sixth episode of Humans? Do you think Max is really dead? And where do you think Voss fits into the story? Please let me know in the comments below!
Loved this episode.
ReplyDeleteNiska continues to be my favorite character. Her interactions with George are gold and were my favorite part of the episode
Really glad that Mia is now back from oblivion.
That flashback to Leo's childhood was awesome and poignant.
Most interesting character is Karen Voss. Who is she? Who created her? How do the other Synths not detect her?
Character stuck in an emotional turmoil - Pete. Hates Synths but just found out Karen is one after having sex with her.
Laughed at what happened to Jill - she deserved it for abandoning her husband for a Synth.
Joe went from a man trying to do good by his family to a man who made a terrible mistake (with Anita) to man who inadvertently became a villain (by calling the cops on Leo and Max).
Speaking of Max - if that is the end of the character then I am sad to see him go. He was quite the emotional rock to Leo.
Karen has got a line straight to George Millican now. Really looking forward to next week when she inevitable encounters both George and Niska.
When the series started, I found a lot of viewers were dismissive of Mattie. But to me, she has always been an intelligent, kind yet troubled teen. Loved her in this episode too as she broke through her mother's silence to ferret out the truth about Tom.
Yes, I think Niska is my favourite too.
ReplyDeleteSo am I - but you have to feel a little bad for Anita?;)
It was - I wanted to say more about it but didn't want to ramble on without making any precise thoughts, and I don't think I needed to, it already did it for me.
Karen Voss : The Final Question.
Pete is one confused little man. I feel for him, but yet, I don't.
Oh yeah, I scream in anger every time I see Jill - she really isn't the best character (that's why I don't ever really talk about her in reviews!)
Again, didn't want to just 'recite' what happened but yeah, Joe is also a massive *insert bleep word here*
Max was a very well rounded and honest character - very wise too.
Wouldn't be surprised with only 2 episodes left - do you think we'll get another series?
Mattie is a lot more complicated than your average 'I'm a teenage character, I'm moody' - she's very determined and I love that about her.
Thanks for reading and commenting!
I do hope we get another season. There's a lot they can explore.
ReplyDeleteLove the series so far. I don't think Max is dead. If he were, how would they be able to figure out the secret Leo's little family is holding?
ReplyDeleteI hope that he is not dead.. but if he is.. the cop (Karen Voss) is a sync too.. so maybe she can run it to..
ReplyDeletewhen i started this show ,i didnt have a huge expectation but few weeks later here i m watching on the same day when it airs. loving the whole human and synth storylines.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really have a clue how good it would be, but it really has exceeded any expectations I had
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought may happen - if Voss is like a replacement or a random Synth made by Hobb, but he realized he needed more or something. Hmm, too many questions. :P
ReplyDeleteAs do I, ratings have been good in the UK, mediocre in the US - so we'll see.
ReplyDeleteWill be guttered if Humans doesn't get a second season, it's my favourite new show this year!
ReplyDeleteNot getting Max back right away could be good plot wise if they want to carry it over to the next season I think, even though I did adore the character and sincerely hope that this wasn't his exit from the show. Ideally, for me, I'd like him to be found with damaged circuitry, which would then become a challenge for the group to over come.
ReplyDeleteNiska and George were superb this episode, William Hurt has been outstanding throughout the series so far though imo. His subtle father figure gestures to Niska this week were a joy to watch.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that we got the answers to Leo's past before the end of the season, but it tied in brilliantly with the way Max chose to sacrifice himself by 'drowning' too that it worked out too well to really have anything to grumble about. I too hope that this isn't the end of the road for Max though, I have enjoyed his childlike wonder and supportive nature a great deal, so I hope that he will still be found as yet.
Voss still intrigues me, it looks like she isn't part of Leo's group at all still, so did make her then? Or was she a failed further experiment Leo's father made after the others that they didn't know about? If that's the case, then she could have all of the building blocks for 'life' inside her that the others have shared between them? Hmm, too many questions, lol.
I've liked Mattie from the start. The scene where she was telling Anita to stay still and be shot was very telling, especially when Anita took hold of the barrel and asked "Why?" That made me think that she would be able to get through to the teenager in a way that her parents never would, because she was going to actually listen to what she said rather than just preach at her like they did. I ended up being a little off the mark there, it was Mattie who wanted to listen to the voice inside of Anita instead, but I still think that was a defining moment in their relationship.
I think it's pretty safe for renewal. It's become the biggest drama Channel 4 have had in the last 20 years, and twice as many people were watching it compared to BBC One the other week, lol.
ReplyDeleteYou should volunteer that idea to the writers! It is a great plot line. There aren't too many episodes left, so I can't see how they can resolve everything in such a short time. Trying to repair Max so the secret hiding within the synths can be retrieved would offer a wide variety of more angles to continue the story.
ReplyDeleteVoss is a mystery. She's not part of Leo's 'family', but she's clearly worked out how to function in society without drawing attention to herself - well, until now when she falls in love. I wonder if Leo's group need her too to reveal the secret within them.
ReplyDeleteHehe, you know me, I like to speculate hard. Since they have suddenly got Mia and (nearly) Fred back, it makes sense that would have to lose one of the group again. I'm just a bit gutted as Max was incredibly sweet, with his almost childlike wonder and naivety at times. His prayer to a god he didn't even believe in stole my heart this week :((
ReplyDeleteI hope so!
