Ten days after NBC cancelled Hannibal, the series no longer has its cast under contract. I hear that starting today, stars Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen are free agents, and they are already fielding film and TV offers. Their options expired last night and were not extended by Hannibal producer Gaumont International Television.
Still, the independent production company continues talks with potential distributors. If Hannibal finds a new home, new deals have to be hammered out with both Dancy and Mikkelsen. Still, if the show gets a new season elsewhere and the two are still available, I hear both love the show and have indicated that they would like to reprise their roles as Will Graham and Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Still, there are other, even bigger obstacles for a fourth season of Hannibal. For once, the show has an exclusive deal with Amazon, making a pact with other streaming services virtually impossible. And, more importantly, Hannibal has lost its creative force, developer/executive producer Bryan Fuller to a new series, Starz’s American Gods.He remains committed to Hannibal, but a possible fourth season has to wait for him to finish the recently ordered first season of American Gods, which would be a challenge for potential buyers.

So basically, Amazon (who doesn't want new episodes) and American Gods screwed Hannibal over.
ReplyDeleteIt's dead then, if the EP has another show, no network will be wait for a new season.
ReplyDeletedo what? Unfortunately, it is the life that follows. Just a miracle for then come soon.
ReplyDeletecrappy ratings probably played a part too. such a criminally underwatched show :(
ReplyDeleteI'm really surprised by the failure to find a new home, out of all the recently cancelled shows Hannibal seemed way more certain than others. But Amazon's lack of interest has really dampened the fire.
ReplyDeleteThank God,
ReplyDeleteI am really into Sense8 right now and I'm not letting this getting over my head right now.
I have lost many shows in one single year and I have to pray for another golden age of television.
Not a Niesen family or anything but Hannibal is one of the hardest shows to watch live. I actually have to sit down in a quiet room and watch intently to digest all the complex dialogue, symbolism, and references. I can see why it didn't do so well in ratings, it's definitely not for casual viewing.
ReplyDeleteIn a nutshell,it's time to say goodbye to another amazing series. R.I.P Hannibal-You will be forever cherished!
ReplyDeleteWait, is Fuller fully commited to "American Gods". I remember reading somewhere that he has written the pilot episode and that Michael Green takes over from there... Anyone know how it is?
ReplyDeleteFrom an interview he mentioned that he has written the first 2 episodes.
ReplyDelete*SAD SIGH*
ReplyDeleteI think they will wrap things up in a way like they did for season 2
ReplyDeleteBasically, Amazon doesn't want to produce Hannibal but they don't want to release them from their exclusive deal to find a home somewhere else either. They will rather kill the show than share the pie. Wow.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't seem safe to me, the fanbase was deadset on saying that it was safe but honestly the ratings taking such a giant dive killed the show. Plus leaving the show on a cliffhanger (wich will happen) is the worst way to screw your fanbase over
ReplyDeleteCan't believe the show is really done for.
ReplyDeleteYa, but American Gods has been in development for over a year, so it was always going to be a possibility that Bryan Fuller would either have to be less present on Hannibal, or that he would have to find a way to juggle both shows, which might have been possible if Hannibal was scaled back to 8-10 episodes with American Gods probably also going to be @ ten episodes.
ReplyDeleteAs for Amazon, that does really stink, but I am not sure why they went with them to begin with? If that was the show's producers' idea or Universal/NBC's??? It seems like the SYFY channel is their best hope now...maybe in the beginning of 2017, but they may have a problem keeping 2-3 characters they need!
Bummer! I know LF is doing Roots remake (don't know if that has finished filming yet?)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they could try to make it a spin off? Try to recontact Mikkelsen and Fishbourne, but call the series after Clarice Starling (or a new name like "blackbird" or Clarissa Larken or something, pending those SOTL MGM rights), and add other brand new cast members and maybe the other could get an occasional guest role or reoccurring. Unless Fuller's version of Red Dragon's ending is radically different, then it seems like the perfect place to break to try and do this later....
SYFY seems like the only place at this point, unless there is way to break or amend Amazon's contract....
Only get Mikkelsen back and do a Hannibal solo show with him devouring a new baddie each week.
ReplyDeleteCrackle sure would dig a show like that
Why would they release them from their deal? As far as I know amazon only has the streaming rights after initial airing. So other networks all around the globe still apply
ReplyDeleteIt depends on what the cliffhanger is. For instance season one's cliffhanger was not as dramatic as season two's and could of easily served as an ok finale. We might be lucky and it might of ended with Red Dragon mostly true to par and with maybe a little door opened for whatever Fuller was exactly thinking, as I have heard contradictory statements from him, which lead me to think that the ratings were not the only thing hurting it's renewal, but MGM as well...
ReplyDeleteJack Crawford is integral to the Starling Story, especially since he pushed Bellas death to this point and was thinking of changing Clarice's race.
ReplyDeletetrue, if it leads directly into the movies the whole thing is good by me.
ReplyDeleteStill I'm massively angered by the idea that season 3 was given despite poor ratings and the showrunners still deciding to end it on a cliffhanger. It's just a "hey here's your final season guys, give the fans some closure" "nah, we'll try to squeeze out more" move
They could postpone the story or even cut it if MGM is playing their "we own your sh*t" card.
ReplyDeleteI would actually love an anthology series following Hannibal around the globe, seeing him hunt his villainous prey and then eating them.
Well he has said he would try and do similar characters with different names several times, but I think what makes Hannibal amazing, is the fact that Harris made him a protagonist in the last two novels published, but that has everything to do with unveiling his past and understanding what Starling comes to mean to him. My theory for a bit over a year has been that Robert Lecter would become a long term antagonist and that Hannibal will feel obliged to do something about it, especially if Robert gets his hands on Clarice--an oppertunity to save her, like he couldn't his sister.
ReplyDeleteBut I think Dexter-sing him, would loose it's appeal.
I just realized that they could subvert and combine elements of Jack Crawford onto the character John Hare. He wasn't introduced until the Hannibal Novel, so MGM can't infringe their rights there. If they could find someone to meet the caliber of LF, it could work, but it would be a lot of work to make people feel "ok" with that.
ReplyDeleteI can't understand blaming NBC either. It's really not their fault at all and we were really lucky to even get three season's of this, but I do wonder about whose idea it was to give amazon exclusive streaming rights, when knowingly they are not into producing non original content and with knowing Hannibal might have needed another venue eventually?
ReplyDeleteHe is a creator, executive producer, and a writer on the show, but recant interviews not only site Green being a writer/exec, so will Neil Gaiman! (It's also said to be an expansion of American Gods and will have elements of Anansi Boys!)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/06/neil-gaiman-is-writing-for-the-american-gods-tv-show
PS: Some speculate that some of cast may be announced at comic con! (But I'm not sure if they can cast that fast)
deal with it, IT'S OVER!!
ReplyDeleteAmazon, don't you dare! Someone please. 😩
ReplyDeleteI thought it had a better chance because from the start of the show Fuller has mentioned they have had interest from other networks. Really I think it would have been better if it had been cancelled after S1, it would have most likely been picked up by someone then.
ReplyDeleteI guess Amazon was the highest bidder.
ReplyDeleteAmazon's lack of interest is the least of the show's problem with getting picked up TBH...
ReplyDeleteI am losing hope. Amazon please!
ReplyDeletegodammit, i knew this shit would happen ... oh well, hope it ends on a high note :(
