Dark Matter - Episode 6 - Preview: “Past Lives”

Jul 17, 2015

Dark Matter is known for its cryptic clues to the mysterious pasts of the characters. This episode gives us not only the normal cryptic clues, but for at least four of the characters we get to see intimate and lengthy parts of their pasts. In terms of information provided this is the single most important episode to date. You know all those theories we’ve been throwing around? Well toss them all out and start thinking of new theories because from the tidbits this episode provides a majority of them are way off track. The episode is jam packed with reveals and new details about the crew. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to watch this episode, especially if you’ve been waiting for some answers. I must warn you though, every answer this episode gives comes with another question. Without any more delay, here are your weekly character previews for Episode 6.

One has an interesting encounter with Two that has potential future repercussions. He is mostly a secondary character in this episode, but the scenes he is in are informative.

Two has many struggles this week as she tries to figure out how to keep the crew going with so few supplies and how to fix things with Five. Two and Five have multiple scenes together, but don’t expect their relationship to be fixed so easily. They care for each other, but friendship only goes so far when you have no memory of who you can and can't trust. These two still have a long ways to go to repair what happened on the space station. Speaking of pairings, Two does address the Three thing from last week, and I think I can say this without spoiling anything, she confirms that she and Three did sleep together. Two has a very interesting answer as to why she picked him, but I’ll leave that reveal up to the episode. As things go wrong for Five we get to see Two at her most human as concern for Five takes over. Two is a strong leader and is skilled at keeping her emotions in check, but the idea of losing Five terrifies her, and it shows on her face throughout the episode.

Three really doesn’t have much to do in the real world this week. He does however have an interesting and dastardly part to play in one of Five’s dreams.

Four does not talk much, but when he does his advice is sound and logical, as usual. His memories are a big part of Five’s journey and therefore we learn a lot about his past. When given some details of Five’s dreams he reacts in a way that surprises and worries Five.

Five is the catalyst for everything that happens in this episode. We get a glimpse into her past and learn how she came to be aboard the Raza. Five wants to help everyone and her decision to partake on this dangerous mission is strongly motivated by that desire. She may also be subconsciously motivated by something that happened in her past. We've seen some signs that she has a complicated past and this episode delivers some very interesting information about who she was and what she had to do to survive before she joined up with the Raza. When things go horribly wrong and her life is in danger some of the others step up to try to save her in a very unique way.

Six has a critically important role to play in this episode as Five’s life hangs in the balance. There is a scene regarding his memories that made me wonder if I was watching an episode of Continuum. Fellow Continuum fans will know the scene I'm referencing when they see it. A horrific event in his past made him the man we know today. He may seem like a big teddy bear most of the time, but he has just as many dark secrets as the others.

The Android takes Zoie back to her Lost Girl days as she spends all her time this week in the infirmary with Five and the others. Nothing really big happens for her, but she does show off her medical knowledge. She cares for her crew and does everything she can to help protect Five on her journey.

While the majority of the crew appears in Five’s dream adventure two of them do not. I suspect that one of them was just off screen doing something else, but the omission of the other one is curious. We will meet the mother of one of the crew and the upbringing of that crewmember is quite the opposite of what I was expecting. We get a bit of a cliffhanger to one of Five’s personal memories and it is not given a definitive resolution. I have my theories on what happened after the scene cuts away and I will join you all in speculating about it after this episode airs. The episode ends with a signature Dark Matter surprise ending. It is a good way to close the episode, but it is a bit overshadowed by the other major bits of information dropped throughout the episode.

This episode did an amazing job of allowing Jodelle, Melissa, and Roger to shine. I think the three of them delivered stunning performances and I can’t wait to find out where things go from here. Jodelle is especially extraordinary as she carries the weight of the episode and does it so effortlessly. She turns in one extraordinary performance after another. They gave her amazing material to work with and she grasped onto it and made it all her own.

Clear your schedules and tune into SyFy at 10/9C on Friday for this not to be missed episode. After you watch this amazing episode be sure to return to SpoilerTV for a detailed review from Lindsey.

“...you have an undisciplined mind, you need to learn to observe without emotion.” - Four to One
“If you don’t remember you’re just going to end up making the same mistakes all over again. I don’t want to watch that happen.” - Five to Two
“If she wants to volunteer let her volunteer.” - Three to Two

  5. You are the master @Vikki Blake. You got all the speakers right. You have only 1 recipient wrong and technically even that is sort of right.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Lol I'm Vixx not Vikki Blake. So what do I do then? Am I right. I'm confused about the technical part.

    “Because I don’t want you to have a stroke! That’s why!” 2 to 5
“If we don’t find a way to pull her out…she won’t make it.” A to Everyone

  7. No need to be confused, because you got it right. The one that was technically right was 6 when the answer was everyone in The Android's quote. You just earned 2 extra spoilers and now I have to search the episode for a few harder ones for tomorrow night. This was a makeup for the hard ones I threw at everyone last week. See, everyone, I can be nice.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm glad you enjoy the previews! Vixx set a new quote record and just got them all right, but please join the game tomorrow night. Someone has to dethrone Vixx.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hey! You want me to lose or something? lol Other people have won before.

    ReplyDelete
  10. We already know why she picked Three it's because it would be just something physical and there wouldn't have any emotion with them. I'm curious though if we learn anything about One? We never really got any backstory with him and I still doubt that he has his body altered to look like Jace and that he's not a clone so it has to be something else.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I didn't get to really play last time, but just the recipients were super hard from what I saw. Don't tell me its going to be like that again tomorrow :( But for the spoilers can I please get something on Six and the Android.

    ReplyDelete
  12. lol, everyone loves competition, I'm just stirring the pot :) . I enjoy rooting for everyone to guess them right. The sooner someone guesses them the sooner I get to share my excitement about the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  13. True, you missed out on the pain I put the others through last week. I promised to go easy on everyone this week. I think it took like three hours of guessing for each round last time. This was a nice change. I felt really bad for everyone last week.

We get to see into a very specific and defining event from Six's past and the events that we see are traumatic. If you thought you knew who Six was then think again, because he has a very dark past. Roger has one scene that is absolutely stunning and heartbreaking as he tackles a very serious moment with such care and realism that you can feel Six's turmoil spilling out through the screen.

The Android doesn't have much going on this week, but she is hesitant to put any of her crew at risk and doesn't much like being put in the position to aid with their crazy ideas. Given that Five is her friend look for her to be as concerned for Five's life as the others are. She plays a role in the creation of the device that puts Five in danger.

  14. We do learn something more about One this week, but I can't really say more about it for the risk of giving away some crucial spoilers. All I will say is, some of what we've theorized about him seems like it could be right, but most of it appears to be very wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  15. To answer your second question I think I'll be nice this week and make tomorrows easyish too. Mainly because there aren't many quotes I can use that don't give away major plot point. When I say this episode is loaded I'm not exaggerating. I hope you can play tomorrow! If enough people show up to play I may be inclined to throw out a bonus round or two ;).

    ReplyDelete
  16. I totally missed your reply. Vixx already got them right, but please come back tomorrow night to play. I'll have the normal round and I think I'll even throw out a couple singular bonus quotes worth an extra spoiler.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, good, I was just going to say that! Glad to hear we will be learning something more about him too.

My theory is he's an undercover cop made to look like Jace to infiltrate the Raza. How close am I? LOL.

    Thanks, Aimee!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wish I could tell you how close you are, but I can truthfully say I have absolutely no idea. On a purely theoretical level I really like that theory.

    ReplyDelete
  19. As for Two and Three there is a little more to the reveal then what we already knew. It will make some people happy and is likely to piss off some others.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Last week sounded like fun Lol. Nothing wrong with a little torture :) But yeah I'll try and make it this time. I'm excited for tomorrows episode. I really wanted to get to know the background of other characters and let them shine. Seems like it will be a nice change from the time that has been focused on One and Three. Can't wait to see what we find out about our other crew members!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ugh. Is it at least something short lived. I'm not a fan of the One, Two, Three stuff. I'm more interested in the mysteries we are trying to solve and find out about who our crew used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is an insanely good episode. You're right, the show really needed this episode after the One and Three focus of the past couple of episodes. To be honest they really don't have all that much screen time this week.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The episode is 90% character backstory. Anything else comes in short scenes. I will share this warning though...the scene in question leaves the story open for future discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  24. From what I've read next weeks episode is Three centered, so I'm guessing they are saving all his screen time for it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. :( I guess I'll take what I can get. I'll just enjoy what seems to be an amazing episode this week. And just cringe with trepidation whenever the dreaded "romance" come up between those three.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Man are you serious!?! I was excited for it because it seemed to be a strong episode for the Android because from what I've heard Ruby Rose plays an android as well. And our Android gets jealous. I can't believe this. There is just way too much One and Three for me. We have all these other characters, I don't understand why they get so much screen time. It's true they are my least favorite. But I'm not understanding why they get so much screen time above the other characters.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It is a really amazing episode and the amount of the information they gives us is more than all the other episodes combined. I really hope any romance waits until a later season, but we shall see.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Next week may be a Three episode, but from watching Comic Con videos I get the impression that Six will get both episodes 8 and 9 to flesh out his story. It seems like the middle part of the season will give us more character information. I'm hoping we'll get some more looks into the characters pasts because they did a really good job with it in this episode. I'm really looking forward to Ruby Rose appearing too. They've been promoting her pretty hard and they'd better give us an android showdown. The Android will surely kick the ass of anyone that messes with her crew.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah. That's good to hear about Six because he desperately need more screen time and character development. I was sorely disappointed with her character and her acting in OITNB. But I am curious about her take on an Android. I'm not a space person, this is the first space show I have ever seen. And let me just say I am completely blown away with Zoie Palmer's take on an Android. I don't have any previous conceptions of what how an Android is supposed to act so I was free of those bias and I guess some comparisons that others would make. After hearing this dreaded news about the episode being Three centered I hope we get at least a couple of scenes with an Android showdown. That was the thing I was most looking forward to in the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I kind of feel bad for Ruby Rose and any other person that will have to play an android because Zoie has set the bar insanely high. I agree with your assessment of her on OITNB, but I can't help but wonder how much was her acting and how much was the writers not really knowing what to do with her character. Seeing how she performs on Dark Matter next week will be a big indicator. There must be an android showdown or fans will rebel. I predict they'll give us one and I predict it'll be epic.

  31. Travis Verta is back in this show?! NO! I don't want Travis, i want SIX!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Is One heartbroken after his conversation with Two?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Trust me, you want to see these scenes. What Six finds out will have a profound effect on him, but he is still Six.

    ReplyDelete
  34. One and Two do have a conversation. That's all I can really say without giving anything away.

    ReplyDelete
  35. So we din't have to worry?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am glad that this episode finally gave us some answers about some of the characters. Can't wait for next week's episode.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah i guess, how big is the cliffhanger before the end scene cliffhanger?

    ReplyDelete
  39. So after this episode a whole slew of theories will pop up?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Random thought: If this show doesn't get renewed, I will be hugely disappointed. I'm already addicted.

    ReplyDelete
  41. No problem.

    ReplyDelete
  42. We too. After Constantine and Forever, if Dark Matter doesn't get renewed will be painful.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This episode give us a clue about how Two and Five meet each other? I see some people call Five as Das, that's really her name?Is it told in this episode?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yeah it's on wikipedia as her birth name.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So how does the sneak peek fit into this episode? Is it the dream? edit: actually dang that, it was the sneak peek for episode 7 haha

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lol I'm extremely bad at this guessing game so I don't think I'll be dethroning anyone anytime soon. This is extremely fun though so I'll keep playing :) besides it helps satisfy my spoiler craving :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. A lot of people call her Das. I think I've missed something.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Five's memory cliffhanger I referenced in the review is a large one in terms of what happened after the scene cut away, but in terms of outcome not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This episode will have everyone theorizing. The episode gives so much information you can't help but theorize after you see it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I can't wait to see how the show follows up on the information we get from this episode. Should be quite interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. We find out how Five came to be a part of the Raza crew. Beyond that I don't know. Five does get a name.

    ReplyDelete
  52. So, will we know what she did to be there?

    ReplyDelete
  53. We will learn what event led her to the Raza.

  54. Round 2 of our weekly guess the quotes game! These are a little trickier than the batch last night, so good luck.

“Oh, so now you want to treat her like an adult?”
“You can do this. You’ll find her and bring her back.”
“We have to get her out now or we never will.”
“She should have full memory of everything that happened before she went in.”
"We’ll be monitoring your vital signs. If anything goes wrong we’ll pull you out.”

Bonus Round! Guess both the speaker and the recipient of these two for 1 character specific tidbit. The only hint I'll give about these is if you are hot or cold.

“Maybe she’s learned to control it like she said she would.”
“Without the brain the body dies.”

    ReplyDelete
  141. Bonus: Boiling hot on one. Still warm on the other, but lost a bit of heat.

Hint: You know which one is wrong. You've guessed the speaker right multiple times. It's the recipient being a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I'm not refreshing the page, just waiting for the new message to pop up, so if you changed an answer I don't know. Make new replies for each guess.

    ReplyDelete
  143. There aren't even that many possible combinations but I can't seem to nail it down.
“Maybe she’s learned to control it like she said she would.”-1 to 2.

“Without the brain the body dies."-2 to Android.

    ReplyDelete
  144. And trifecta for the win! I was looking for either Everyone or The Android as the quote is said in response to something The Android says, but kind of to the whole group. So what 3 characters would you like spoilers for?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Silverbow guessed it right, the answers were 1-2 and 2-The Android or Everyone, but let me give you a bonus quote for your efforts. It's a good quote too!

Five to Six: “…I thought I could trust Two…but sometimes she scares me a
    little.”

    ReplyDelete
  146. Aw yes, at long last, the sweet taste of victory.

I'm gonna go for my usual and ask for spoilers on the ladies, please and thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Just curious....Why did you ignore all of my responses for over an hour?

    ReplyDelete
  148. You were responding? Your responses weren't showing on my computer. I just refreshed and still don't see any new ones from you. I was wondering what happened to you.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Thank you, oh GOD!!!!! you just ripped my heart out of my chest and spat on it LOL, this is a fake quote, i HAS to be, she would never say that, please say it's fake PLEASE.

    ReplyDelete
  150. You follow me on Twitter, right? DM me there.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I just refreshed my screen three times and finally just saw your responses. I'm so sorry, I promise I wasn't ignoring you. My computer is just being incredibly annoying tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Okay. Because it was really strange not getting any responses at all. I didn't understand. So what happens now?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Technically speaking, based on the time stamps I think you actually guessed the bonus 1 minute before Silverbow, so let me know what character you want a spoiler on and I'll hook you up for the lovely computer glitch.

    ReplyDelete
  154. If that's the case, I'll change my spoiler requests from all the ladies to just The Android and Two, since Vixx got that one.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Vixx is the master of the first round and you've become the master of the second round. You two are quote guessing geniuses.

The Android doesn't have much to do this week, but when Five needs some help she turns to The Android. They make a great team, but in this case The Android is a very hesitant helper. She does not approve of this plan. When the fight for Five's life begins she eagerly takes the orders of anyone who tells her to do something that might help. It is not just Two that she looks to in this moment of crisis.

Two will show her vulnerable side as she faithfully stands by Five's side. When things get dire she can't pry her eyes away from Five as she and the others struggle for answers. It hits her even harder because of the part she played in allowing this to happen.

Five takes us on a very detailed journey into the events that led her to the Raza. We learn her name and learn that she was part of another crew before she came to the Raza. She has a lot of heartbreak in her past and a very intriguing mystery that may very possibly tie into something we have already seen.

    ReplyDelete
  156. It doesn't really matter. I really just wanted to know what was up with the non-responses. I guess Four.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I hooked you up with your three. I'll just throw out an extra spoiler tonight because my computer has decided it wants to be a pain tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Nice. I love the female interaction on this show, and the Android/Five relationship is adorable.
I can honestly never tell if I enjoy this game or not, but despite the hair-rending frustration, the spoilers are always worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Not intentional. I like the showdowns between you and Silverbow, so I promise I would have encouraged you both to battle it out had you not disappeared from my screen.

Four: You know that royal past of his? We see more of his past memories then any of the others and get to see his family life up close and personal. When Five tells him what she saw it impacts him in a way that neither of them expected. His reaction may cause Five to lose hope in regards to one of her ambitions. Four has a side to him that is surprising.

    ReplyDelete
  160. The female relationships are very well done and the way they let them interact without the necessity of a guy in the scene is refreshing. I can't wait to watch how things unfold as the season progresses.

As long as you guys are willing to put yourselves through the torture for the spoilers I'll keep issuing the challenge each week. At least you know you've earned the spoilers by the time you get them. Technically all it takes is one person winning for new tidbits to come out for everyone to enjoy. The big thing about the winner is they get to pick who those spoilers are about. I made Round 1 easy this week, so if I get a screener for the next episode I'll try and go easy on the 2nd round.

    ReplyDelete
  161. I only deal in the truth. Sadly I did not invent that. It is a real quote from the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Thanks a million. I don't think it was you computer, btw, I didn't see Vixx's replies either.

    ReplyDelete
  163. How can they possibly come back to where they were after Five said that?

    ReplyDelete
  164. That's odd. I wonder if it was something to do with disqus tonight. It makes me feel somewhat better that it wasn't totally my computer. I was getting updates, so my computer was acting kind of weird which is why I thought it was on my end.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I don't want to say anything about the specifics of the memories. You'll enjoy the story though.

    ReplyDelete
  166. So basically heartbreak all around in the episode? Is there ANY funny moments or lighthearted moments? Now that you said Five was part of another crew before it makes me think her and that boy were pickpockets and stumbled onto the Raza. Then Two saw her and instead of killing her or throwing her out she took her under her wing until they woke up from stasis, am i way off and looney-tunes?

    ReplyDelete
  167. Cool, and will we or at least ME start liking him, because right now it doesn't feel like he fits in with the crew, last week helped a little. Because i think i'm the only one that actually agreed with him about Two.

    ReplyDelete
  168. You'll see him in a new light after you see some of his past.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Not much lightheartedness this week. Beyond that you're going to have to watch for answers to your other questions. Trust me, this episode is worth the wait.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I'm excited for that then because he's my favorite character I just wish he was in tonights episode more is the reveal really good?

    ReplyDelete
  171. I ship One and Two so hopefully it will make a lot of us happy but I heard that we'll learn more about Three next week which sounds interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Can somebody explain why Five is so mad at Two? Sure Two killed those mob goons (and only a mafia family would be stupid or brazen enough to take two attractive young women into the back room for a beating only for counting cards, instead of just escorting them to the door and telling them not to come back), but the mob goons were the ones who struck first, and also escalated the violence to knives (lethal force) instead of sticking with fists (less than lethal force). Two killed out of self defence, which makes Five's objections seem incredibly whiny and childish (not that that's new for Five).

    ReplyDelete
  173. I watched a sneak peek with Three and Five. And I was thinking, maybe the one who took back the key can be Two?

    ReplyDelete
  174. It's because she never actually saw Two kill anyone and she bonded with Two the most, from the beginning she trusted her, so when she saw her she was heartbroken.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I didn't get it either. Shock, sure, but the rest seems contrived to me as well.
