Dark Matter - Episode 4 - Review: “Dynamic Pairings”

We’ve been insanely spoiled this summer with extraordinary programming, but even in such a crowded landscape Dark Matter shines like a super nova. This series was blessed with writers, directors, and creators of exceptional film and television pedigree. The cast is full of high caliber and well respected actors. Dark Matter even discovered and introduced all of us to the gifted Melissa O’Neill. All of these factors combine to create an outstanding series full of intrigue and surprises.

Last week the series left us with the big last second reveal that One is in fact not Jace Corso, as the original is on a mission to find the Raza. We open the episode with One in deep thought about Two. He can’t shake his feelings for her, or the kiss they shared. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that at some point these two are going to have to deal with the feelings between them.

In the mess hall the crew is preparing for their trip to the space station. They are in desperate need of supplies, repairs, and money to accomplish the former. While those things are practical the crew wants other more personal things like meat, goggles, and red heads. Two is left to deliver the bad news that they have no cash left for any of those things. Three seems to think she skimmed some off of the mining deal, but she reminds him that she was offered more to leave them behind. Why has Three not yet learned to stop questioning Two? She’s bailed them out of far more situations then he has.

Speaking of Three, he offers to try and find a buyer for the weapons. Two is skeptical because he’s been boasting about leaving. He seems convinced that he still plans to leave, but let’s all be honest here, Three wouldn’t know what to do without the others. In a smart move Two assigns One to join Three on the weapons buyer hunt. Neither man seems happy about this decision, but they are at least smart enough to not challenge her on that decision. I must take a minute to comment on how brilliant Anthony is with the sarcastic banter required of Three. He’s brilliant no matter who he’s working opposite, but the best banter definitely occurs when he is up against One or Two as Marc and Melissa have turned bantering with him into an art. As they approach the space station the rest of the crew clear out of the mess hall leaving One and Two alone in a moment of awkwardness.

While they are awaiting approval to dock, One ponders whether or not it is a good idea for them to board the space station given the warrants for their arrests. The Android, always a step ahead, made sure to file false registration papers for the Raza. Three and Six seem equally concerned, but Two is confident that The Android’s plan will work. As is expected, the ship is cleared to dock and they begin their approach.

The crew scatters to get ready and look for things to sell. The Android seems a bit heartbroken, and yes I did just say heartbroken in regards to an android, because she isn’t invited to join them. I’m not sure even she understood the emotion, but ever since they awoke her she’s never really been alone. Even when she was on the space walk she wasn’t alone, and now she is alone and not sure what to do with herself. It was a very subtle look that Zoie used to portray The Android’s feelings, but it did the job to convey the emotion she was trying to process.

Five and Six are trying to find things to sell, but Four isn’t much help as he shuts them out of his room when they inquire if he has anything to contribute. The ring from his box has Four preoccupied and while the others head off to the station he hangs behind.

On the way out One and Three both ask Two why they are being paired together and she tells each of them that she doesn’t trust the other one. It was a rather ingenious way to pit the two guys against each other. The puppy dog eyes One gives Two when he thinks she’s trusting him with a special task was adorable and endearing. The poor guy has it bad for Two and he has no idea how to get past her Fort Knox sized walls. Two seems rather proud of herself for getting the guys to agree to work together.

Once on the station One and Three head off on their mission to get a buyer for the weapons. Two orders Six to get his arm taken care of. I think she’s starting to spend too much time with Three because his sarcasm seems to be rubbing off on her a bit.

Two: “Hey, any crispier and you could serve it with a side of slaw.”

Now that the guys are off doing their own things it’s just Two and Five left to try and sell off their extra goods. The show zeroed in on character and actor chemistry in the premiere and has done a great job of building on those pairings. From this point on the main focus of the episode is on the pairings of One and Three and Two and Five, whom were great choices to carry this episode.

One and Three find themselves in a bar with Three thinking he is better suited to do the talking. Turns out Three is the subtle one in this situation and One is upfront, which was an interesting twist because I was expecting it to be the other way around. It seems like One just wants to get everything done with and end his time with Three as quickly as possible. Can’t really blame him since Three is being his usual jerk like self.

Six finds his way to the space station clinic and it’s good to know that future space age clinics are just as backed up as modern day ones. This clinic is even outfitted with a screen playing an information video. If you didn’t pay attention to these videos during your first watch then I highly recommend going back and watching the clinic clips again, because those videos have some important cloning information in them.

Elsewhere, Two has finally found a buyer for the goods she’s been carrying around. She netted them just enough money for a couple good dinners. Turns out that being around a bunch of older adults hasn’t curbed Five’s natural teenage curiosity as Two realizes she’s wandered off. After a brief moment of worry Two locates her charge watching, and participating, in a shell game. Five helps the guy playing outsmart the game runner and in turn gets a small reward for her efforts.

Two: “How did you do that?”
Five: “I dunno, I think I may have played before.”

With that Two launches a plan to earn them extra cash as she notices a casino. The way Two and Five work together seems as if they have run a similar scheme like this before. They are both skilled in different games and they complement each other in a way only an established team could pull off. I’ve been wondering how Five came to be part of the Raza crew, and the more interactions I see between Two and Five the more I believe her in was through Two. I don’t know if Two found her and took Five under her wing, or if they are somehow related, but their bond is so effortless I can’t help but wonder how long Two has been in Five’s life. They seem to have a commodore that goes beyond the week they’ve known each other.

While Two and Five are trying to earn the crew some cash Three is busy getting smacked by a pretty lady in the bar. One reiterates how much he dislikes being stuck with Three while Three points out that One is going to get someone killed by thinking with his heart and not his head. They are an odd couple, but that is what makes their pairing work so well. With a buyer secured they go off to meet with him.

On the ship, Four is trying to make his exit when The Android stops him. Four wants to do some research, but The Android points out to him that all research can be done on the ship since they are linked to the station. Since Four is the last crew member on board it is a desperate effort by The Android to not be left alone. She tries everything she can to keep him from leaving, but he’s on a mission and not inclined to want to hang out with her. Seriously, who doesn’t want to hang out with Zoie Palmer? You lost a couple cool points here, Four.

The Android: “I also posses psychological and psychiatric subroutines should you feel the need for therapeutic counseling. Are you feeling depressed…lonely?”
Four: “I’m fine, thank you.”
The Android: “I’m at your disposal should you reconsider.”

The Android seemed in need of some counseling more so than Four. Zoie has figured out how to walk this fine line between human and android emotion that allows us to see how much The Anroid is evolving and, dare I say, feeling. Last week was a major step for her in understanding her place within the dynamics of the crew, and this week she wants to be more involved and is being shut out. I think she’s feeling lonely herself, but doesn’t have the base understanding of the emotion to fully understand what she is experiencing. She’s as human, if not more so, than some of her crew mates. I look forward to watching her continued evolution under the skillful touch of Zoie and the talented minds of the writers.

It’s time for the guys to meet with their weapons buyer, but since they are early they take the time to rehash the question of who is guilty of stealing their memories. They both have valid points about why the other is guilty, but their debate is interrupted when they are locked in the room and gassed into unconsciousness. Turns out trusting a random bartender was a bad idea. The door opens to reveal a masked figure standing over them.

The guys wakeup bound together which does nothing to help the mood of either man. They try to hatch a plan to get free, but they do not work very well in sync and end up toppling over. So, maybe Two needs to have some team building exercises on board before the next space station adventure.

In the casino Two is looking to capitalize on Five’s gift for games. They wander around until Five has a feeling about one of the tables. Two has come to trust Five’s feelings so she lays down some money to buy Five into the game. This is definitely not the first time these two have been in a casino together.

Four is trying to find information about his ring only to learn that it is a genuine ring passed down among a royal clan line. The pawn shop owner seems genuinely terrified when he realizes the ring is an original and closes up shop before Four can get any more information. Well, that was a curious encounter.

Six is still patiently waiting at the clinic to be seen. Yeah, wait time to a see doctor does not appear to have improved at all. He is watching an infomercial that is playing in the waiting room about a new deep space cyro system. It works by taking the memories of a person and using their DNA to create a clone that will serve as their surrogate at a destination of their choice for up to seventy-two hours. After that time frame the clone goes to a biofacility to be disposed of, but not before transferring the memories back to the original. The show didn’t spend the time making that a focus of this scene, or spending production dollars, to produce it for no reason. That infomercial is an important piece of information and I believe a clue as to what happened to the crew. Remember this because I’d bet good money on us encountering one of these facilities in the future. Is this crew rogue clones? Did they somehow surpass past their best by date? Are they originals who have had their memories wiped and not returned? Could Five’s understanding of them being “dangerous” be because they are clones that have become self aware and able to survive longer? Has Orphan Black ruined me? Just the mention of clones sets off a multitude of possible conspiracy theories. Whatever the purpose of the infomercial was it now has me really eager to learn more about clones in the Dark Matter universe. Six seems really intrigued by the technology, and so am I.

Back in the casino, Five is struggling with this game, but Two seems to have a natural understanding of it. I think Five’s feeling about this table was for Two as she sits down and dominates the game. Yeah, that settles it; these two have been casino hoping before because they are too natural at this to not have a history. Turns out Two is quite the card shark.

In captivity, One and Three are now in a worse place then they were before as they are stuck on the floor from their previously failed plan. After some banter Three finally confesses that he wasn’t planning on leaving after all. That doesn’t do him much good if they can’t get out of the mess they’ve gotten themselves into. The door opens to reveal Jace, who is just a little curious as to why One possesses his face. It’s a very good question that we’d all like the answer to. So, who is One? Is he a clone? Did someone get surgery to look just like Jace? Why did One, before he was One, go through so much effort to infiltrate the Raza crew? Jace has all the same questions, but One can’t answer them as he has no memory of who he was before. Three is over this two faced situation and just wants to be cut lose so One and Jace can work out their issues. Jace isn’t an idiot, so for now Three stays put.

Six is still waiting to be seen by the doctor, but his patience is waning. Health care is as top notch and time effective as ever on this space station.

Two is busy in the casino cleaning out the table she is at. Five looks nervous, but Two is in charge of the situation as she wins another round. However, all of her winning has garnered them some unwanted attention from the proprietor of the casino. They are forcibly removed from the table and taken to a back room.

After Four’s failed attempts to acquire information on the space station he does what The Android suggested in the first place, he turns to the data hub in his room. He doesn’t get much screen time this week, but this show is great at optimizing story and they have made every interaction, no matter how small, very important for all the characters.

We learn that the real Jace Corso was recruited to join the crew of “the legendary Raza” for the mining mission. Before he could join up with them his safe house location was given up to the Galactic Authorities and he barely got away. He has been trying to catch up with the Raza to ensure his reputation isn’t tarnished by missing the rendezvous with them. He was surprised to find out that surveillance footage showed him boarding the ship. Ever since he saw that footage he has been trying to track down the ship and his look alike to get answers.

When Jace starts to zap them both with an electric shock stick Three caves and tries to make a deal with him. He tells Jace to take the weapons that are on board the Raza and sell them, and he doesn’t even have to cut them in for any profit as long as he’s cut loose. Jace likes the idea, but instead of cutting Three loose he decides to make his own arrangements for procuring them. As is to be expected, One is none too happy with Three trying to sell him out and costing them the weapons.

Two has apparently been counting cards, not necessarily cheating, but the casino doesn’t like that she’s winning so much money, so they are going to call it cheating as an excuse to get rid of her. Two isn’t leaving without her money and when the guy tells her she doesn’t have a choice her first instinct is to look over and check on Five. It was a meaningful look of contemplation as she weighed the risk to her young companion if she took action. Five for her part looks terrified, but she’s dealt with a lot lately and I think she has confidence in Two to get them out of this mess.

On board the Raza, Jace has obtained the weapons and is taking them from the ship when he encounters The Android. She quizzes him about the buyer and the amount they’ve been purchased for, but she doesn’t seem to realize she’s not talking to One. She does notice Jace’s hair is different than One’s, but besides complimenting it she doesn’t put two and two together.

The Android: “You’ve done something new with your hair. It suits you.”

I think The Android is just so desperate for companionship that she’s dropped her guard a bit. About now I’m betting everyone on the space station wishes she was with them.

This is the moment when Two and Five face a crossroads in their relationship. When Five stands up for Two and says they weren’t cheating the guy smacks Five. In an instant something snaps in Two. Melissa did a great job in this moment as this dark and focused look overcame her face and you could see the switch flip as Two went into some dark and vicious primal mode. She went at these guys with the ferocity of a mother protecting her child. This was more than a captain protecting a crew member and maybe even more than a big sister protecting a little sister. Two’s reaction was truly primal and completely instinctual. She takes the guys out without a second thought as she takes them down with a fire in her eyes.

When the fight is over, and all the men apparently dead or dying, Two surveys the room. She looks as shocked as Five does as she realizes what she just did. I think, and this is just my theory, that we witnessed a latent memory of Portia slip through. The woman protecting Five was not Two as we’ve come to know her. I believe, for this brief moment, Portia was able to fight through the memory loss and take charge of her body. Five is important to Portia, and while we don’t know why, we did get to see what Portia, and Two for that matter, is willing to do to protect Five. At the end of the fight Two staggered and seemed to be off balance, which is unusual for someone so in control of her movements. The look of rage was gone and replaced by confusion, and I think it was in that moment the Two we’ve come to know returned.

Last week I wondered if Five had a history with the crew or if she was a stowaway, but for me this episode has affirmed that she’s been with this crew, or at least Two, for quite some time. While Five’s prior self has likely witnessed Portia’s fierce and dark side before this version of Five has not. She looks terrified of Two, which is sad because they have been working together so effortlessly since the premiere. For Two’s part she looks terrified of herself as well. She takes a deep breath to center herself then she grabs Five and they make a hasty exit.

Still restrained, Three thinks this is a good time to accuse One of being the one to wipe their memories. In Three’s defense, yes I did just say that, that odds are rapidly swaying One’s way. However, I think it would be too obvious for One to be the memory wiper, but I’m not ruling him out as a suspect. While Three is busy making accusations One is devising a plan to get them free. Three doesn’t like One’s plan, but after One points out that Jace is likely to come back and kill them Three is suddenly on board for One’s escape plan. They will have to work together, which is not easy for these two men. One comes up with a plan to use the shock stick to weaken the wire restraining them. To get to it they have to shift, together, across the room. I was expecting some argument from Three, but he surprisingly goes along with One. I guess pending death is a great reason to work with your frenemy.

While the others are trying to escape the station, Six finally gets his arm looked at. The doctor takes a DNA sample to generate a skin graft. When he sits back at his computer we see that the computer flagged the doctor to alert him that Six is a wanted criminal. He pushes a panic button and goes about treating Six while he waits for help.

One and Three finally get to the shock stick, but when it lands on the ground the two men have to work together to retrieve it. Once they are on the ground One wastes no time shocking them to get free. Three doesn’t seem all that into pain, but One seems to have a decent tolerance for it. Again this was a reversal of what I was expecting as I thought for sure Three would be better with pain.

Luckily Six is not an idiot and he realizes the doctor is on to him. With his arm bandaged he uses the needle, the doctor intended for him, and knocks the good doctor out. He sees the doctor’s computer and realizes that he was flagged for apprehension. Now Six is too on a mission to escape the station.

Two, Five, and Six all make it back to the ship at the same time. They have to get away from the station before their deeds are found out, but One and Three are still not back. While The Android is inclined to leave them behind Two isn’t. Four thinks they probably took the profits for the weapons and left, but while Two believes Three would do that she knows One wouldn’t. Besides that she doesn’t think Three really intended to abandon the crew. It’s a good character moment for Two as she shows how well she knows her crew.

Four: “Three made it clear that he intended to go his own way.”
Two: “He’s all talk, besides if he was actually going to leave he would have made a bigger deal about it. Subtle he is not.”

While Two is arguing to wait for them, One and Three are still struggling to get free. Three doesn’t like this plan, but One understands the urgency so he ignores his companion, which is a good thing because Jace has sold the weapons and is on his way back to kill them.

Two does not want to leave without them. That is until the alarms sound on the station and she has no choice but to give the order. Luckily, the two men make it back just in time and rejoin their crew. Two wants to know why they weren’t responding to her, and when One struggles to explain Three comes to his rescue and tells the crew an exaggerate version of what happened.

Now One is forced to confront Three about what happened and why he cover for him. Three has been looking for someone to work with him and support his decisions, and blackmail is as good a motivator as any. He gets in One’s head and makes him think the crew will turn on him if they know about Jace. This ought to provide some nice drama for One’s connection to Two.

Three: “From here on in we agree to agree.”

It’s now Two’s turn to try and deal with the events that happened on the space station. She finds Five in the mess hall and tries to talk to her about things. Five looks afraid of Two and has no interest in talking about the bloody fight she witnessed. She makes a quick exit and leaves Two to have to process the situation on her own. Two seems a bit hurt to be brushed off by Five, but she doesn’t have time to process the failed conversation as Six sits down to discuss their failures of the day. The only thing they got out of that stop was some fuel and everything else they lost or had confiscated. They also failed at the opportunity to learn anything about their pasts.

Six: “So, bottom line, we’re worse off than we were twenty-four hours ago.”

Well that’s not entirely true, Four did do some research, but what he found isn’t what he had hoped for. He is the son of a murdered emperor, sound familiar? He is also on the run for the murder of said emperor, sound familiar again? I think the show just gave us the identity of the owner of Five’s dream from the premiere. This is kind of surprising, because I truly believed Two was going to be revealed as the royal member of the crew. It wasn’t as big an ending as last week, but it was still an interesting, and frustrating, place to leave us for another week.

I can’t review this episode and not commend Marc Bendavid, Anthony Lemke, Melissa O’Neil, and Jodelle Ferland for their outstanding performances. Marc and Anthony are great scene partners because they have perfect timing to bounce the insults and sarcasm off of each other. It is fun to watch this odd couple have to work together. Melissa and Jodelle so effortlessly portray a very sisterly relationship, even though Two is starting to display motherly tendencies towards her. When working together Melissa always takes a very protective stance around Jodelle and I don’t know if that is by direction or just Melissa playing with the dynamic between her character and Five. Either way it does a lot to tell us about the past Two and Five may have together. Two is definitely a protective over Five and I look forward to finding out their connection. Two’s training scene from last week setup the fight this week, and Melissa showed us all, yet again, why messing with her would be a horrible idea. The stunt department did an amazing job choreographing that fight scene and Melissa nailed it. Amazing work was done by the whole cast this week, but these four were major standouts.

We got to learn about space station life this week and it’s quite a chaotic, yet familiar, environment. It should be interesting to watch how things differ on other stations and how they may be the same. We got another big reveal at the end of the episode and learned a lot about clones in this world. What does everyone think about these revelations? Are the crew clones gone rogue? Why was it so important for One to join the Raza crew? Do you think we got to meet Portia this week during Two’s fight? What do you think Two and Five’s past relationship was? Are they sisters? Did Two find Five and offer her protection? Why was Six flagged by the space station when half the people there were probably criminals too? This show demands theorizing, so join me in wondering what may be ahead for the crew of the Raza. This episode left us with many questions, so let us help each other through this long week wait until the next episode.

Lindsey will be back to take over the reviews next week, so give her a big welcome back and be sure to check out her review of the next episode. I’ll be back with a preview at the next available opportunity. Until then be sure to watch Dark Matter every Friday night at 10pm on SyFy then return to SpoilerTV for a detailed review.

Hit the comments with your questions and theories. Maybe one of us can guess the future correctly.

  1. What did everyone think about the events of this episode? It gave us a lot of information and gave us even more questions. What do you think about clones in the Dark Matter universe? Do you think Portia came through to protect Five or would that have been Two's response anyway? What connection do Two and Five have from there pasts that make them such a great team? Can the bond between Two and Five be repaired? Will One ever confess his secret to the others? So many questions.

  2. While the episode could have done with more Android, the scenes she did get were very good. Sad as all hell, but good. All I want is to see some more one on one interaction between her and some of the other characters, to really see some of her emerging personality. A possible upside to the Two/Five rift is maybe some more Five/Android scenes, as Five doesn't have many people to talk to beyond Two and Six.
The rest of the episode was great. Three and One aren't as annoying when they're together, which surprised me. That fight scene was badass and I do hope we get to see more of Two's skills in the future.
The next episode seems pretty interesting, with a very Dead Space vibe to it.

  3. I agree that more Android would have been good, but after last week Zoie probably needed a lesser episode to recover. I love the emotion they are infusing into her as she evolves from her time spent with the crew.

I hope they don't drag out the Two and Five rift for long as I enjoy them working together, but I do agree that more Two and The Android would be good too. It is such a fascinating relationship Two has with Five that I want to know the background behind it. This episode tells me they've been together for a long time. Their dynamic is not a new one.

The next episode looks amazing and I agree that it does seem like it could be very Dead Space like. In the season preview we see Two with a bandage on her neck, which has to be this coming episode, but we also see Two with short hair behind a shield in what appears to be medical. Either Two gets infected with something, or at some point we'll meet another version of her. This show is one great big mystery and I love it.

  4. I really liked all of the information I learned this episode, but as a whole I thought the episode was just okay. I was particularly interested in Four's history and I hope we get to explore that more in depth soon. I found it hilarious when Two stabbed the guy in the throat because of how unnecessary it was. I liked that fight scene. I want to learn more about Six and his history. One and Three were more tolerable together, but it still went on too long for me and the banter got old about half way through. I would really like to see the Android conduct a therapy session though. Also the fact that she can be independently deceptive by creating false docking papers to me adds to the case she isn't a typical Android and that her origins are probably unique. I have a particular spec on that story. I liked the information I got out of the episode more than the actual episode itself.

  5. The information was good, but I also really loved the character development we got in terms of the character relationships. Everything about Two's fight was unnecessary and that is what makes me think the brutality was more Portia than Two. That fight was very brutal and primal and unnecessarily violent. The Two we've come to know is more calculated in her movements while this was just primal protective mode.

The Android is most certainly not like any other androids. She's independent and becoming more human like by the episode. I look forward to seeing more of her in the weeks to come. They have got to give us some Android therapy sessions with the crew at some point because that would full of awesome.

I like One, but Three can be a bit over the top sometimes. Together they kind of counter that in each other and become a fun to watch duo.

  6. I've always said that the relationship between Two and Five was more mother-daughter and this episode proved i was right. Are you sure when Two fights she's more calculated? I don't remember her fighting bad guys, just One in the pilot, i was actually surprised she killed them. I thought i was the only one that thought that maybe the crew found a way to stop their shelf-life as clones and become full-functioning human beings but i'm not that positive they're clones anymore actually.

  7. The Two and Five relationship definitely took on a mother-daughter vibe in the way Two protected her. Up until that fight it still felt very sisterly though. If they aren't related then they have to have at least been in each others lives for quite sometime. I think that was some version of Portia that we meet during that fight.

The fight Two had with One in the premiere was very calculated in the way she moved. Even her training scene was very calculated. This fight tonight was just brutal and primal. The stagger at the end was very out of the norm for Two. Even going back to the first episode when they lost gravity she is the only one who landed skillfully. It was a very interesting bit for them to include, so it has to have meaning.

I'm not so sure about the clone thing either, but they spent a lot of time and resources to introduce us to cloning for it to mean nothing. I would not put it past any of the crew to be clones who figured out how to survive past their expiration date. I'm also not ruling out the possibility that the crew is a mixture of clones and originals. The possibilities are endless.

  8. Thinking that Portia came through scares the crap out of me, that's why i don't want it to be true, but yeah now i remember. She's not brutality, she's control, i've always seen it as more mother-daughter, not sisterly. With Six i DO see a sibling-like relationship. But why would originals be with clones?

  9. I think it would make for an interesting story if one of them had to fight the personality of their former self. It would be ironic if it is Two given how hard she had worked to distance herself from what she knows about Portia. Two is a very in control character so that fight seemed very not like the Two we know.

Two did have very maternal reactions this week. It's always possible she found Five as a baby and helped raise her. I don't think she's Five's biological mom, but that would certainly be an interesting twist. All I can say with confidence is that I think these two have been in each others lives for a long time.

Clones would be with originals for the same reason ONE is with them. ..they need something. Plus what better way to hide then in plain sight.

  10. It feels very Jekyll and Hyde then, i could see Two finding Five and raising her and becoming a mother and daughter con team right? I would've guessed the clones somehow gained self-awareness and wanted to live their lives alone not with an original who would sort of treat them as disposable.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I have three theories about the relationship between Two and Five:
    1. They are mother and daughter or at last sisters
    2. Two somehow "adopted" and raised Five
    3. Two was hired to protect Five and did this since years

    ReplyDelete
  12. They are mother and daughter or at last sisters

    ReplyDelete
  13. Before this episode I would have argued against the possibility of them being mother and daughter but that was a very maternal reaction Two had. If they are related I'm still leaning more towards sisters though.

    ReplyDelete
  14. All the of your options definitely have merit at this point. My gut is saying they are either sisters or at the very least Two has raised Five from a young age. Even going back to the first episode Two wouldn't let Five have a gun and she kept Five at her side as she figured out what was gping on. When the mining guy boarded them Raza she sent Five to hide. These all seemed like very instinctual protective familial reactions. For Five's part she has been equally inclined to stick close to Two. It is a very interesting dynamic. I hope they are related because family relationships, between women especially, areally few and far between in scifi. Very few scifi shows have mother/daughter or sisterly relationships. The last I can remember was Sanctuary and that didn't end well. I'm very interested to see what route the show goes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh wow you're right, all season she's been very protective of her.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Why though? I mean yeah siblings would go to the ends of the Earth for their siblings but PARENTS? Parents would scorch the Earth to save their children and right now Two's looking more and more like a mother instead of a sister, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I know, it seems like much longer but that is a hallmark of good storey telling. Two has been watching over Five from the beginning. Every time the team has to split up she keeps Five with her. I don't even think it is a conscious decision but one she just makes by instinct. These two have a history together. The show is pushing their story to hard for there not to be a past between them. I look forward to finding out what that part is.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah same here and i hope it's a good story, not monstrous.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with Two seeming more maternal right now and that fight was definitely scorch the earth worth, but my problem with this is Two's age. She would have had to of had Five at a very young age and I don't see this show going that route. However, a sister that raised her baby sister may have a very maternal reaction to get being in trouble. The blood bond would still be present and add in the extra factor of raising her and maternal reaction it is. I think we'd see the same reaction if they aren't related by blood but Two raised Five from a young age because even then she would feel maternal towards Five. The age difference between them just doesn't seem great enough for Five to be Two's biological daughter, but this is scifi so who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think it will be a good story. In tense situations Two always takes a second to check with Five and make sure she is okay. In the mess hall dream reveal scene last week and just before the casino fight scene this week she always steals a glance at Five. This is a very unique bond they've setup between these two.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I can understand that, it's just you know on shows where there's siblings i can feel their sibling chemistry. Like on "Chuck", Ellie essentially raised Chuck but i still felt their sibling chemistry, even if she was sort of also his mother. But on this show all i feel is a mother and daughter chemistry, i'm sorry i don't want to disagree but it's THERE for me. Two being a mother to Five, maybe she was a teenage mother, it's not too out there right,? Especially if they were card sharks, it could've been a way to make money so she could've supported her.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think it is most likely that Two found Five and raised her. What we saw last night in the fight was very Jekyll and Hyde as it seemed like Two lost all control. Even she seemed confused by what happened. It would be a fascinating story to see Two fight who she was versus who she wants to be within her own mind for control of her body.

As for the clone thing you are working with the theory that the originals knew they had clones on board. My theory is that they didn't know they were clones therefore they would be treated like normal.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah but we're talking about Two, what if PORTIA was nothing like Two? I don't like thinking about this but it's inevitable not to, you know?

    ReplyDelete
  24. A scary storyline but yeah interesting storyline as long as Two wins. Oh okay then yeah that would make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Melissa O'Neil the actress is too young to have a 15 year old child but we do not know how old 2 the character is, and she would only have to be 30-31 to be a teen mother. The story 5 told 2 in the first episode did refer to a step mother? so maybe the story is about 2 and they are half sisters, which would work well due to the age difference and the fact that O'Neil is biracial (Asian/Caucasian) and as far as I know Ferland is not biracial. I am still leaning strongly to mother/daughter though.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 3) the person on the ship that seems to have the natural protector role with 5 is 6. I think option number one is going to be the relationship between 2 and 5, IMO it is mother/sister. If the crew has been together a while, and after the 1/Jace Corso reveal in episode 4 it is no longer clear if the crew has been together that long, than I do think 6 might have developed a protector role with 5.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Part of Two is Portia and some of her baseline instincts are Portia's, as displayed during the fight. Two's darker side seems to be Portia and the more compassionate side seems to be uniquely Two. She is the one fighting the hardest against who she used to be. Could be that a part of Portia always hated the way she had to be to survive and it is that side that survived the memory wipe and gave us Two. The darkness that Portia was, and is, will always haunt Two so why not haunt her in a physical manifestation? Two versus Portia would be a compelling story to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think the story Five told Two in the first episode was Four's memory. The details match up with what we learned about him last night. I would believe Melissa and Jodelle as mother and daughter if the show had a really good way of explaining the age issue. I'm still more inclined to lean towards sisters or maybe, as you mentioned, half sisters. The only other theory is that she found and raised Five and therefore is like a mother to Five.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good points, and it would definitely be very compelling to watch. I have an off-topic question actually: Is Two the first female captain of a spaceship's crew?

    ReplyDelete
  30. It would definitely be an interesting story and it would make for some great material for Melissa to work with. No, Two is not the first female captain. The ones that come immediately to mind are Janeway from Star Trek Voyager and Beka Valentine from Andromeda. Granted that latter captained her own ship, but became a first officer to a make captain. I still count her as a captain though. Aersyn Sun from Farsacpe was captain like, but I don't think she ever got a formal title. Samantha Carter sort of ended up captaining the Stargate Atlantis crew and they did have a space ship, so she too kind of counts. There are others, I think, but they are few and far between. Two is in a very small club of actual female captains.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It would be a scary story for Two, but I think in the end Two would prevail. She regained control after the fight, so I think she would definitely be able to prevail over Portia for control of the body. It would give Melissa a hell of an amazing story to delve into.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Considering how Two can be at most five years older than Five I fail to see how the word "maternal" can even come into the picture here.

Six's relationship with Five can be considered paternal, because Roger Cross actually has some years on his belt and Five is the series' resident boring mopey teenaged girl (hiya Dana Brody!). Two barely looks like she can buy alcohol, and that's all in her hair. Really, the casting director should have looked for someone 4-8 years older for the "Badass Boss Lady" role. Melissa O'Neil is certainly no badass, take charge Hannah John-Kamen.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Camila del castro4 July 2015 at 19:09

I think they're mother and daughter. Their instincts seem genuine, show how they really were before."Five" has a stronger relationship with "Six" and "Two", but are differents ways. "Six" act more like a friend, a older brother. "Two" since the begining is maternal with her. Maybe "Two" raised "Five" since she was a little kid; maybe "Two" is "Five's" mother; maybe they're sisters;maybe they're not related. But after this episode I'm sure they are blood related.
The fight scene looks like a mother protecting her child, and I agree was Portia in that moment.
But not just her. "Five's" reaction seems like someone who just saw a bad side of someone who is a kind of idealized person, like she never has seen her that way before. I think in the right moment after the fight was the real "Five". The age is not a problem, a lot of actors play characters older than them. The question about the "racial" thing, well, that's usual. In Brasil, for example, you can see several cases.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You're not far off on the age difference, in real life the actresses are only 6 years apart in age. However, just because you are close in age to someone does not void you of being able to have a maternal like reaction if you helped to raise that person, especially if they are sisters or half-sisters.

Melissa was trained in martial arts before taking on this role, so she came into it with an athletic background and fighting knowledge. I do believe she possesses the necessary level of badass to pull off this part. Two, under Melissa's control, has certainly taken charge of this crew and put down several challenges to her command. I personally think Melissa was very well cast as Two.

  35. Fans of the show, I need your help. After the bitter disappointment of Complications , I am looking to add one new show to my summer viewing schedule. Four episodes of this show are sitting on my system and I have yet to bring myself to watch them. Is the show good? Should I dive in? Are the characters good (as in, written well)? Is the story line compelling?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like Complications. I've actually been enjoying that show this summer. With that said, yes, you need to watch Dark Matter. It is a thought provoking show with mystery and great action sequences. But don't go in expecting answers right away, because they are giving us pieces as the story goes along. This is one of my top favorite new shows this summer on par with UnReal, Stitchers, and Complications.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No. No. No. No.

In detail: It's produced horribly. The directors have never heard of lighting, and every scene is either an abandoned warehouse or a soundstage. The writing and dialogue is middling and the acting (with the exception of Roger Cross) is average to below average (hey there, One). The characters are ciphers, archetypes, and one (1) Stoic Asian Martial Artist Badass who carries a sword to a gunfight because of course. Of the cast, maybe a handful display any kind of personality or charm (the asshole Jayne epxy is kinda funny). And worst of all, the plot relies on the viewer caring enough to follow these characters in uncovering several Great Mysteries, including the worst of all science fiction show serial mysteries: What's In the Box. The episodic plots are all science fiction cliches and poorly done renditions of Stargate: Universe.

If you want a good show, watch Killjoys. If you want to marvel at how far one of the minds behind Stargate SG-1 has fallen, then this is the show fr you.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You make a very good point about the shock Five felt after watching Two kill those guys. I do think we saw the original memories of both women come through in that brief moment. Portia was protecting whomever Five was before. It was extremely primal on the part of Two/Portia. If that wasn't a maternal reaction then it was definitely one of a familial blood bond. I think they are somehow related, but the big question is how. Sisters is still number one on my list, but not ruling out that the show could throw a twist at us and make them mother and daughter. However, that option would require a very good explanation to handle the age issue. If they do go with the not related option, then at the very least Two/Portia has been in Five's life for a very long time and Two feels maternal towards her despite the lack of a blood bond.

Maybe Two has know Six for a long time and by virtue of his connection and history to Two he has always been a part of Five's life. That would explain the way he looks after her too.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks for the info. And don't worry, I am not impatient for answers. I love good build ups that spread the story across many episodes.

One of my main issues with Complications and the deal breaker (for me) is the shitty story line that they gave Beth Riesgraf. To me, that is unforgivable.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well that is one point of view, certainly. DebraFan, the only way you'll know is if you check out the pilot for yourself. I have a rule when watching a show, if the pilot can't get my attention in the first 10 minutes I'll watch out the episode to give it a chance to surprise me, but then I'll not watch any more episodes.

I enjoy Killjoys myself, but I don't think it is as good or compelling as Dark Matter. It's just that Dark Matter connected with me more. TV is very subjective in that some people will love one and another will hate it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hmm. Two contrasting replies. I will watch the Pilot and see what it has to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I do agree that Complications has kind of shafted Beth so far, but her characters' story seems to be building up to something.

Let me know what you think about Dark Matter if you choose to watch it. I personally really enjoy this show, but others don't so I say at least give the premiere episode a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Did some searching and looks like there is quite the debate on both the shows.

    http://www.reddit.com/r/scifi/comments/3bcywv/am_i_the_only_one_who_really_likes_killjoys_dark/

    http://www.tv.com/news/syfy-killjoys-dark-matter-which-is-better-143568886798/

From the comments it seems the fandoms would form a set of Venn diagrams. Some like Dark Matter and dislike Killjoys. Some love Killjoys and hate Dark Matter. Some love both of them. And some are indifferent and watch both shows.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It is quite the interesting split between the shows. I think Killjoys is okay and I enjoy watching it, but I'm not nearly as invested in it as I am in Dark Matter. To me Dark Matter is more of the space opera type of show I enjoy. You have to commend SyFy for coming up with two shows that air on the same night with the same general idea of space exploration, but that are vastly different shows. The fact there is a debate only works in favor of SyFy as both shows get free promotion as the fans across the line debate them. SyFy is on a roll this year with their new shows, first 12 Monkeys earlier this year and now Dark Matter and even Killjoys. This is a good year for their new programming.

I agree. I'm just anxious to see the explanation. I wait that be a really good one. Just complementing, "fives" reaction, in this episode, was different, compared with her reaction after finds the other are really danger criminals. She looked fine although the records.

  46. Camila del castro4 July 2015 at 21:49

I think you should watch the 4 episodes released. Usually people doesn't like a show in the pilot episode. There is not a lot of scenarios, and definitely is not a show if you looking for big visual effects, until the moment. But I think is a good story line, and the characters are evolving along with the story and the episodes, mainly because they know as much as those who watch, which is something interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I feel a little like One's secret might become a secret weapon at some point. Like if all the others are trapped and arrested, he can just say "check my DNA" and be released. Then he'd find help and/or the android. But, it's more likely that the secret will turn out to be something that comes back to bite him in the ass when Jace Corso catches up to him.
I didn't expect Five's dream memory to tagged as Four's so early, but I'm glad it was done. I'm just not sure why Four is still keeping it secret from the others.
And is anyone else a little confused by Five's trauma-stricken reaction in the casino? So far, she's been pretty unfased by the murderous dreams and seemed more sad about the dead boy's age and the probability that she might have known him than the fact that he was DEAD. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the small handgun she found next to the body suggest she might have been the one to pull the trigger? I really love the actress in the role, but the character is confusing in her reactions.

    ReplyDelete
  48. One keeping this secret will inevitably come back to bite him firmly in the ass. I don't think the crew will have the severe reaction that Three tried to convince him they would. They are all in this together and sure they would be angry at first, but they wouldn't turn on him. Not trusting at least Two will come back to haunt him.

Five, up until this point, had only seen the wrap sheets of her crew mates. This was the first time she'd seen one of them kill, so I'm sure that was bound to be upsetting. More than that she has bonded with Two and to see someone you respect, and maybe even idolize, do something so vicious is bound to be earth shattering. She's still a kid and a kid with no memories is bound to have a terror reaction to a situation like that. I think Jodelle played it right, but I hope we start to get some background on her and Two soon.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The story is definitely evolving episode by episode. We actually know a tiny bit more than some of the characters, but we are definitely learning more as the story goes along. Even some of the small moments have meaning in solving the mystery.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Go for it. Watching four episodes is just enough to know for sure if you like a show and I'd say it's definetly Worth it. some other shows, (Stitchers, Whispers, etc.) are loosing me. In my opinion, Dark Matter is much better.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have a couple of points I have observed. First One is surgically enhanced. Two no clone can last longer than 72 hours as they know it. It was verified by the real Jace and the video. So to me I think 3 is the closest to the truth. One is some sort of agent who once onboard learned the real mission of the Raza. He then used the technology of cloning to mindwipe the crew. I think he realized that the crew though outlaws were more noble than their acts against others. I believe he took a chance by mind wiping them to bring this nobility out of them. He had to wipe his own mind too so it would maintain his cover. However, eventually in the future those who sent him on this mission will reacquire him.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah it would be, and cool, who's you favorite?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Do you feel that Dark Matter is a more human than Killjoys?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah i'm worried what One keeping that secret will do to his and Two building relationship, yeah Five hasn't seen that before.

I am very happy today for what God used (Dr ATASE) the great spell caster to do in my life. My name is Greg i had a fight with my wife in the past which led to our breakup. I tried all i could to make her come back to me but she refuse and said it was over between us, one day i came across a testimony on the internet on how (Dr ATASE)used his spell to reunite two lovers so i decided to contact (Dr ATASE) via email and he assured me that my wife will come back to me within 2 day after he has finish the spell.I am very glad today to tell the world that (Dr ATASE) is truly a man of his word because my wife came back to me and fell on her knees begging me to forgive her and accept her back. Do you have a problem ? You can easily contact him through his email id which is indiaspelltemple@yahoo.com ..

This would be all, please you can also help me share this to those who needs it. Again his email is indiaspelltemple@yahoo.com Thanks,

  56. If One had been honest he'd have been better off. Now he has to keep secrets and that never ends well.

Five lost a good deal of her innocence in that scene and I think that broke Two's heart a bit. I belive that is why Two sought her out to talk. That and I think Two wanted to talk it out to process it herself. What happened seemed as shocking to Two as it was to Five.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Not to mention Three's blackmailing him, so every time they vote and One votes with Three, Two will question him if it's something that she knows he would never vote for. So he'll have to lie every time she asks him why he did something that's against One's personality, how different do you things would've turned out if Two had Five stay on the ship?

    ReplyDelete
  58. It was a bit 'filler-ish' but had some progressive moments. The Pilot became my favourite character for this show during this ep.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Step-sisters. My wild theory is she might be her mother, with the consciousness being moved into other bodies.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't know if I would say more human. They both have very real human moments, but for me Dark Matter connects more. I like the format better and it's just a better fit with what I enjoy watching. I respect Killjoys and it is fun to watch but it doesn't get me as connected or involved as Dark Matter does.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Two is smart so she'll figure out something is going on. Eventually the secret will reveal itself ands probably at the worst possible time.

Things would be slightly different had Two made Five stay on the ship. Mainly she may have never found herself in a casino to lose their money in. Their relationship needs a lot of damage control after this episode. It may take some drastic event to get them back to where they were before the fight that caused this rift.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I suggest you give it a try. You might be surprised at how much you like it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree with that but i actually meant in a LITERAL way, Dark Matter feels like it's the future on Earth and Killjoys feels more alien with their terminology and stuff right?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I just hope Two and Five will be alright, even closer than before and i hope Two won't lose trust in One.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think in time the two women will mend this damage to their relationship. They need each other so this will work itself out. The big question is how long that will take. I think it will take something happening to one of them to fix what Two did and what Five witnessed. They have a history hidden in their last memories and whatever that bond is it was strong so I feel confident they'll be okay.

One I'm not as confident about. When Two finds out the truth I'm not sure that rift can be easily fixed. I hope they will come out on top and working together, but it could go either way.

    ReplyDelete
  66. That is a very interesting and plausible theory. It would be on par with the personality One has to do something like that. I really like this theory.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Camila del castro6 July 2015 at 08:05

Anyone else thinks that Five has something to do with the memory loss? And the fact that her has memories from the others it's related to the transfer memory process to clones, although it's not a clone?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah Five is like the prime suspect LOL

    ReplyDelete
  69. Five is technologically gifted which gives me pause in supporting her as the prime suspect. I don't think she would have made the code as basic as The Android described it. Two, on the other hand, is also gifted with technology and knows the basics of the ship but her programming skills could use a bit of work. We did see her alter The Android's memory chip and her basic skills led to The Android experiencing a memory wipe herself. It's possible Two wanted to give her crew a fresh start, so she took the chance with wiping the memories of her whole crew. She is also the only one who seems to be avoiding blame for this situation, so to me that may give some merit to claiming her as the memory wiper.

    ReplyDelete
  70. So Two and Five prime suspects for you?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Two more then Five, but let's be honest, they all have potential. If you look at their skill sets and if it was indeed one of them I'm leaning towards Two based off of skills.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Except One, he's my favorite character but he doesn't really have any skills right?

    ReplyDelete
  73. He is definitely lacking the more defined skills of the others. He must have some skill to have been able to infiltrate the crew in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I hate the fact that he may have infiltrated them but yeah he must have.
