ReplyDeleteI get why people are excited for BvS given the cultural significance both brands hold. The Hunger Games franchise just is a phenomenon I for one don't get. The story has been there thousands of times and feels like a contrieved way to wrap the love story into a pretense of a plot.
ReplyDeleteI put that franchise on par with Twilight, Divergent and most other Young Adult films.
Meanwhile I get the Star Wars and Batman/Superman hype. All three franchises are things people grew up with while the other is not just new but also (most likely) a testiment of its fanbase (young adult) being incredibly loud
Wasn't he there for the show last year as well though? Cody is the newbie this year. Maybe he did something?

ReplyDeleteLike Captain America, I never got the guys appeal but he WAS a symbol of hope in the real world during WW2 (as was Superman) so I do understand the impact the character had

ReplyDeleteMaybe if you'd think more like a teenager girl stuck in a world were rules are against her (because you might say no, but the world is still sexist), a teenager girl who grew up in a world were her 'role models' were damsels in distress or princess who only wanted a man. Because up until Hermione Granger, girls didn't really have a powerful role model - and yes, the world had Wonder Woman and Supergirl who were exquisitely forgotten by the world.
ReplyDeleteAnd then you have a teenager girl, who is just like you. A girl who defied every rule that society had and who was punished because of that, but overcame every obstacle even if it was with psychological disturbances.
She was her own savior. He fought for herself and for her family and for what she thought it was right.
No more damsels in distress. But a warrior.
Then maybe, you'd understand whats all the hype with The Hunger Games.

ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a wonderful reason to like these movies but I don't get a pro-feministic message out of these movies at all. In fact a movie that has the female lead forced into a public relationship with an "audience darling" and has her fake her own persona to reel in the masses for the revolution is kind of sending the wrong message to me. A "don't be yourself if you want to start a revolution"esque message.

I doubt he's getting killed off soon. He's the mole. The villain that will help break Scott and the pack apart.
ReplyDeleteWell that and culturally Batman and Superman are thee biggest and most iconic superheroes (and to many the best). And Star Wars is well Star Wars. It's not just some nostalgia that keeps these characters and things so wildly popular.

ReplyDeleteSeeing as how Scott and Stiles are about to have a major falling out, and Scott is apparently going to go through a major mental break and Kira's Kitsune abilities might cause severe problems. I doubt Theo will be killed or screwed over, even fully soon evil soon. That and he's a beta that can shift into a full wolf. He can probably curbstomp half the pack without effort.

ReplyDeleteThat's not the point. He's not being killed off anytime soon. You don't kill a dragon, a major villain/fake hero halfway through the first half of the season. Dramatically that'd be unwise to say the least.

However, I went through some articles (that I found when I typed 'Hunger Games Feminism') and I'll quote you them for you. Some of the points you mentioned are touched here.
