Chasing Life - A View from the Ledge - Advance Preview

If you’re anything like us, you can’t wait for season two of “Chasing Life” to begin. Fortunately the wait wasn’t too long after the previously scheduled August premiere was pushed up to July 6. But if you still can’t stand the suspense, you’re in luck: We have a preview of the season’s premiere episode, “A View from the Ledge.”

After April said yes to Leo’s proposal at the end of last season, you can expect the two to relish in their new status and begin some wedding/engagement planning. Season two picks up the morning after the engagement. (After an interesting dream sequence while April is sleeping.) Leo and April haven’t told anyone their good news yet. Who do you think will be the first person they tell?

After that day, the episode jumps forward a month and we see how everyone is dealing with the engagement. April’s mother and grandma may not be as ready for this as April. I thought the family dynamics here seemed to stray a bit. Sara and Gram weren’t their usual supportive selves and it felt kind of strange. Granted, they want to make sure April was getting married for the right reasons. And they are still dealing with her cancer. But their characters just felt a little “off.” Still, April has a wonderful talk with her mom later in the episode that ended up being a very nice scene. One of them will shed some tears as the other gives her thoughts.

The episode really delves into April’s state of mind as she faces cancer again. As she deals with her relapse and a new round of chemo, she begins to question what she wants out of life and who she is without the job she loved. I enjoyed this storyline. A new character, Vanessa (Krysta Rodriguez), forces April to question herself and her goals and dreams. I must say, Vanessa’s character was beyond annoying. But what she had to say was insightful and gets April thinking.

Leo also helps April face her fears about dying. The title of the episode, “A View from the Edge,” isn’t just figurative. You will see a scene on the ledge of the hospital roof. (I just wish this scene wasn’t so obviously shot against a green screen. Some of it looked noticeably fake.)

While April and Leo have made it official, Dominic is definitely not out of the picture. It’s clear from the very beginning that an engagement hasn’t put an end to this love triangle. April, Leo and Dominic will be around each other a lot. Can they all live with that? It’s going to create some jealousies and a lot of awkward moments.

Natalie is still dating Dominic. Heavy tensions remain between her and April. But she does make an effort to connect with April. However, she isn’t too happy with Dominic by the end of the episode. Natalie seemed to have a larger role than she did last season.

As for Brenna, she has a new hobby, which I thought was a really fun addition. Greer is gone, though she is mentioned. But Brenna’s life has to go on. You’ll see a couple new characters at Brenna’s school. Brenna wasn’t too nice to one of them. I’m interested to see where that storyline is headed. Brenna will also have to make a decision on whether she wants to know the outcome of her bone marrow donation.

Of course, as you may have seen from all the episode photos, we also get to see April and Leo’s engagement party, where Brenna gives her sister a sweet gift and Sara makes a memorable toast. Before that April and Leo share a nice moment at her house. And wait for an intriguing shocker at the end of the episode that opens up a new mystery about the girls’ dad. I wasn’t expecting it at all. It was a great twist.

Don’t miss all this and a lot more in the season premiere of “Chasing Life.” It airs Monday, July 6 at 9/8c.
