Beauty and the Beast - Heart of the Matter - Review

Jul 5, 2015

What an interesting and unique episode.  In some ways, I feel like this one epitomized some of the more awkward aspects of what Season 3 has presented so far, and yet there was enough endearing and romantic material to transcend that at many points.  There's no doubt that this is another fabulously delightful season of the show, though this was probably my least favorite episode in Season 3 so far.

Essentially, the show has become much more about Vincent and Cat trying to make their relationship work (despite complications both normal and extraordinary) than it is about the mythology of beasts and super-humans and the adventures that come with them.  Before, these aspects were interwoven, along with the friendship subplots and such, and now it seems that the emphasis on "which relationship paranoia has our two lovebirds in its grip this week" has overpowered almost any kind of exploration of the fantasy side of the show.  It's come to the point now where it's almost a daffy sitcom at times, with Catherine the hyper, panicky detective and Vincent the sensible, down-to-earth doctor - a far cry from where the characters began in Season 1.  On one hand, I like the thoughtfulness the writers put into explicating the minutiae of VinCat, but on the other, I think they've wandered away from the original purpose of the show to some extent.  The relatable nature of Cat and Vincent's problems is fun and engaging for the most part, but since it's blotted out so much of everything else, we still have zero clue who the big bads of the season are, and J.T. and Tess are starting to get shoved even further into the sidelines.

That's putting aside the entire, separate issue of whether we actually like seeing Vincent and Cat struggle with these particular types of problems, or if we'd rather see the issues between them more directly spurred by the adventures they take on each week.  Frankly, I did like it better when they were saving each other from various scary, supernatural threats rather than bickering over date nights v.s. working cases and such.  However, I have every faith that the writers might turn it back around before this gets to be too much of a problem.  At least with 22 episodes, there was more time for the writers to get a sense of how viewers were reacting to the season's direction and reassess certain aspects as needed, whereas now we're pretty much stuck with whatever they decided to serve up for these 13 episodes.  Still, I am so happy the show is still on that none of this bothers me that much at all!  I'm still hugely enjoying these episodes despite the head-scratching qualities they sometimes feature.  The characters are too lovable for me to feel otherwise.

So without further ado, let's get into the more specific parts of this episode. I'm using some lyrics from Take That's song "Into the Wild" that capture the inevitable push and pull of Vincent and Cat's complicated relationship.

"Up tight, tied up again
Tied up again with my one and only friend
Your voice is all I can hear
All I can hear, it’s the music to my ears

Staying out of trouble staying in and out of touch
In and out of touch I can never get enough
Uptight, tied up again
Some things will never change"*
Therapy time: When the episode began, I was glad to see yet another guest casting slam dunk with the always-great Saul Rubinek as Vincent and Cat's marriage counselor (or engagement counselor, really!).  The actor brought a sensitive and caring aspect to the counselor that was pleasant and heart-warming; plus, his confused reactions to the parts of VinCat's relationship they had to skip over to avoid divulging the truth about beasts and such was hilarious.  These scenes were, overall, a lot more fun than the case of the week segments, which we'll get to.  My only caveat here is to wonder if Vincent and Catherine are really codependent.  In fact, it seems like a lot of their issues come from desperately trying to hold onto aspects of their independence and resist fully acclimating to the relationship's increased closeness even as their hearts tug them ever nearer to one another (rather than losing their individual selves in their bond, which I don't think has happened at all)  Take, for example, Vincent's jitteriness at moving in with Catherine or her refusal to stop obsessing over cases.  The whole codependent diagnosis felt a little like a convenient aspect designed to put Cat onto the villain's motives regarding her husband.  Speaking of which...

This week's case: Even though every episode this season has resisted giving us concrete details about who is actually conducting these super-human experiments on "innocents" (a confusing term, since we know little about most recipients and whether they wanted the treatments.  Take Bob and Carol, for example, who seem pretty pleased using their powers for ill purposes), the first three could get away with that a lot easier because the pacing and action scenes were more satisfying.  Here, we had a lot of VinCat arguing and so little explanation of the unusual nature of the heart or what the wife of the recipient was up to that it was hard to actually follow the plot.  Some blanks really need to be filled in about this year's larger story arc, and hopefully soon.

Subplots: Tess' first week as captain had her predictably torn between helping Cat and maintaining her sense of authority and rule-following in her new role, all while stuck in a weird outfit that apparently came with the job.  I did enjoy the four-part conference call as poor J.T. tried to coordinate the arguing factions of the fab four to make progress on the case.  Sometimes, in trying to figure out where the storyline of this episode was going, I admittedly felt a little like J.T. in that scene!
This brings me to J.T.'s decidedly odd little plot in this episode, where he was again testing his powers, while bouncing some ideas of off an offscreen Heather.  I thought it was weird that the writers had him talking to Heather about his issues, as there's not a strongly developed friendship between these two, although I suppose she is the only one outside of his immediate circle who knows about what he's going through.  So I can accept that to some extent, but then having him explain everything to Heather over the phone while we couldn't even see her was off-putting.  Even him throwing himself down the stairs seemed like an overly extreme method of testing his healing powers, yet I can go along with it since he is a very neurotic and sometimes obsessive character.

I loved the last scene between Tess and J.T. because it was genuinely sweet and adorable.
It's going to take some time.  Both Vincent and Catherine's viewpoints are completely understandable.  How can Cat be expected to ignore all the superhuman craziness going on around her?  Sure, she could dial down the franticness a notch, but I see where she's coming from.  She's hardwired herself to watch out for Vincent at every turn, and maybe she overreacts to every new lead fearing it will bring them to another threat against him.  Cat also does obviously have a natural enthusiasm for investigating these types of cases, a drive that she has every right to follow.

"It’s almost like we go
Dance with desire, then we go playing with fire
Then we go into the wild again..."*

All Vincent wants is for the super-human cases to go away so he can lead a normal life, but that's not especially realistic even if it is a goal he's earned in spades.  And he's right that Cat could take at least one night off from cases on a regular basis so they can have a romantic date night.  I'm glad that by the end of the episode, after the therapy session, they were able to meet in the middle.  I'm kind of hoping that's the end of the strong emphasis on these issues in the VinCat relationship, but I doubt it.  At any rate, there's no question that as always, Cat and Vincent are "better together"!

  1. Great review of BATB Virginia. Yes, I agree with everything you say about "Heart of the Matter", and I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing the holes and absences of important facts the writers fail to inject into the story. I also have noticed that JTnTess have been shoved further into the background and it looks like Heather has too. All three of these characters don't seem to have a purpose right now. Suddenly Heather breaks up with her fiancé and is back in New York - doing what? She seems to be wandering aimlessly around with nothing to do but barge into Cat's apartment or Vincent's houseboat. Tess is no longer Cat's partner so how much are we going to see of Tess in these episodes and who is going to be Cat's new partner? JT is worried about the fact he's been given this serum, but no one seems to listen to him anymore. I was really surprised he was confiding in Heather and I didn't even know it was Heather until the other fans posted it. I loved Saul Rubinek, as the therapist and laughed a lot over the confusion he was trying to untangle to get to VinCat's underlying problems - I hope he comes back. The confusion with everyone calling JT at the same time had me roaring and Austin played his part so well I love BATB, but I really hope the writers get their act together and start bringing their plots together. You're right on it Virginia and thanks for your excellent review of this episode. Can't wait for Thursday's epi of "Most Dangerous Beast".

  2. Thanks Virginia. I loved Saul Rubinek and miss Warehouse 13! He played the confused counsellor so well.ni don't disagree with anything you said. There is for sure a much more positive feel to season 3 than 2 as I have commented before but the best lesson I learned in life from my dad was "don't fix anything that's not broken". At the end of season 1 BATB was not broken and now it is. I really hope as Buffygirl says the writers get it together. I want the fab 4 back and Heather to be just well Heather. Honestly I would rather Tess just be Cat's partner snd best friend than captain and JT's girlfriend cause I really feel like the writers don't really know how to write that romance. Till next week with another awesome review and song.

  3. Yep, sadly I have to agree with you both, and Virginia, thank you for expressing the lack of depth this season is facing. I too feel like it's starting to feel more like a sitcom, which is still nice, but not compelling enough for me. I personally am missing the depth & intensity of both S1&2 atm. I do love a lot of what we've had in S3 so far, but am really longing for more drama in general & more passion from VinCat. I want their fights to feel more heated & real (not so sitcomy) - leading into far more passionate, intense making up scenes! I don't mean sexual as such - although to be completely honest, I'm desperately missing that too - just more intense & deep! It all feels too lighthearted & cute at the moment, but I'm trying to stay hopeful that it will slowly turn around again. I'd much rather see them standing strong together, believing/trusting in each other & unravelling a deep, dark, mythology based big bad, that's hopefully somehow tied to the mythology of last season. Really really hoping that that's where this will eventually lead.

  4. this ep made me a lot of concerns abt cat character,at some point of the ep i really started to think does cat really love vin or she is just using him for getting some kick out of that cases.

  5. Thanks! Completely agree with your points. I'd really love some answers to all these questions Season 3 has raised so far. Hopefully they are coming soon!

  6. Awesome points; it does seem like the whole tone of the show has shifted from mysterious/dangerous/passionate, fantasy/action/romance show to, well, light comedic drama with some slight flourishes of the supernatural. It feels like the writers might be overreacting to the negative fan reactions to Season 2 by trying to make the show *too* light after being criticized for all the darkness and angst last year. We'll see if they can turn it around in the next few eps; I know that simply some actual answers to the mythology/big bad aspect would make plenty of viewers happy.

  7. Cat was so off the wall wacky at a few points in this episode that I had to do a few double-takes, lol! But ultimately, she does truly love Vincent, even though she gets so carried away with the cases. I suspect that her desire to protect Vincent by anticipating and preventing every new threat to him is a big part of her obsessive nature about the cases

  8. Thanks to you as well :) I agree that Season 1 had that perfect balance of relationship and mythology elements we're missing in Season 3. The show can still be dark and mythology-driven in places without becoming a Gabe/Torible redux.

  9. i dont understand cat logic.if u put vin in the middle of the case someone is gonna find out sooner or later, thats what happened in 303.now bob and carol know abt vin.she can do the cases, but for god sake do it anonymously.dont go blabbing ard ur name right where big bad can find u.

  10. Hopefully the writers will turn BATB around and take it out of the comedic role because this was never to be a comedy. There are too many comedy sitcoms out there. This is what was different about BATB - it had the fantasy, the mystery, intrigue, and above all else, the wonderful romance between Vincent and Catherine with some steamy scenes now and then. Isn't it something that all or most of the fans totally agree that while S3 has been great, there's still something missing. Hope the writers know that we've had enough of the comedy already and let's get back to the wonderful things we originally had in S1. I want to see Vincent and Catherine happy with each other, doing their own jobs and in between fighting the big bad out there. I hope they have story arcs ready for JT, Tess and Heather, other than what we're getting now, which is shoving them to the back burner. Let's hope for a quick turnaround to what BATB was when it first came on. So glad you, Virginia and BATBVINCATfan agree that there's a lack of depth.

  11. it is always a joy to see Saul Rubinek. agree 100% with Virginia`s review thanks

  12. Yes, I see your point! There are definitely better ways to go about investigating the super-humans.

  13. My goodness, you read my mind Virginia! That's exactly what I was thinking! I think they are actually over correcting for last season! For me personally, I loved S2, other than the sickening love triangles & the lack of love scenes from VinCat! The amount & balance of action, drama & humor was spot on for me, all I wanted them to do, was keep VinCat strong, united & passionate about each other, with no more tringles -EVER- & a few beautuful love scenes like 115 & 116! That along with more of the mythology and Rebecca & Alistair to me would have been absolute perfection!

  16. I would like for the show to explore the connection that Cat has with Rebecca Reynolds. It would of been nice if they showed the scene showing Vincent explain the situation with Heather. In this episode Cat may have been a little overprotective of Vin. Maybe she is afraid if she keeps getting him involved in the cases he may beast out and cannot come back. The love in Season 1 and the end of Season to would be hard to maintain. Now that they are working double jobs and trying to adjust to living together and the engagement. I never watched the other Beauty and the Beast. Someone please tell me what I am missing about the mythology. I love the show and I am glad it returned. Oh, I hope Sam returns as the villain behind the experiments. Please do not be Gabe.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Agree about Cat's motivations, I think that's just it. The mythology of the original show, as I recall (watched it a few years ago) was very different. The two incarnations have little in common outside of the very, very basics of the premise (Cat's even a lawyer rather than a cop in the original). Sam coming back would be cool!

  18. Okay here goes, "Most Dangerous Beast" is an INTENSE episode! Certain characters make some drastic moves in the episode, one in particular will make you feel sorry for that character despite everything. You'll know what i mean when you see it, yeah the show is definitely keeping badass Catherine Chandler around LOL. The JT arc may have come to a close in the episode, what got me mad was that we saw a little of the procedural aspect the show got rid of in Season 1. This episode has proven that maybe Catherie shouldn't be a human cop anymore, it will never come to fruition of course but it just felt that she's meant to be a supernatural cop. Vincent goes through the ringer in this episode, we find out why Bob and Carol left Vincent alive, the end of the episode is ok, so you can relax in that aspect LOL. But the downside is there's no Season 1 hot steamy scenes between Vincat, there's CUTE scenes as always but a no-go on steamy scenes, overall an awesome episode, but still no clue on who the Big Bad is.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Your are absolutely right Virginia: the tone shifted to exactly what you said above. But that was NOT what the fans wanted and the 'darkness' or even angst was NOT what we were complaining about. It was the love triangles, the character assassinations, stupid dialogues and maybe (on my part) the glaringly obvious plot holes. Nobody I can recall was screaming for a comedy! And I agree with you about them NOT being co-dependent, just because they save each other or DEPEND on each other. If they really were, it could not be fixed within one session - no matter how good the therapist is. I too hope that they are done with this phsycho-babble and get back on track finding the big bad - and he had better be a really BIG BAD.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So all turns out well, but we still don't know who Big Bad is or are. It's going to tough watching Vincent go through the ringer and I'm getting the feeling this episode is on the dark side - another BK special. BK isn't going to give us any steamy scenes I'm afraid and I have to wonder why. Now that JT's arc may have come to a close, where does JT go from here. I hope Catherine doesn't go superhuman cop because that will mean the end to our beauty who is human and her love for Vincent who is a beast. I'm afraid we're going to have to forget about those steamy scenes. I'm getting the feeling that BK is taking this series way off track and trying to make it into more of what the CW is carrying in the way of shows. I hope there wasn't comedy in this one - it's nice once in awhile, but not all the time - this show wasn't meant to be a comedy sitcom. So Catherine gets a new partner, but he's already out. I kind of thought that would happen. You gave me just enough to carry me into Thursday. Sounds exciting, but I'm really down about expecting but not getting those steamy love scene between Vincent and Catherine. As we move more into S3 you can see BK written all over these episodes. Not that I'm not enjoying them, but what got us hooked is gone (for now). Did BK write this one too? Thanks Ivan - you did a great job giving just enough info. Can't wait to see this one and look forward to seeing "kick-ass Cat".

    ReplyDelete
  21. Maybe BK needs to go back and read the original fairy tale. He's doing the same thing he did last year; try to draw in an audience that isn't there. Those of us who stayed around through season 2 are here because we are anticipating the feeling we got from season 1 to be back. We just need that balance back of drama, romance, intrigue, suspense, little bit of humour we had. The episodes and plots could be done so that we get all of these. When I read that the focus was going to be on Vincats love, I thought we would get back to what I lived about season 1 but instead BK is making a poor attempt to normalize this relationship- it's not normal- just like the fairy tale- it's a love story so IMO stop trying to do that. The intensity of the love scenes should counteract the intensity of the drama and threats. That's what hooked me into this show. It is much more palatable from season 2 but I am still waiting for the "aha" feeling I had after so many season 1 episodes. I know things change but the feeling doesn't have to.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, and the episode "Most Dangerous Beast" will answer a few of those questions. But I am still confused about Heather's fiancé, and believe he might be the one behind all these "experiments"??

    ReplyDelete
  23. You hit it all on the head, Maureen. They need to bring Sherri and Jennifer back and send BK over to one of those stupid comedies on the CW like Jane The Virgin or Izombi. Even maybe reassign him to Arrow or The Flash. There's no question that BK doesn't understand what Season 1 was all about and it went downhill since then. Don't get me wrong, I'm still enjoying S3, but he needs to bring back those steamy scenes we had in "Any Way Possible" and "Insatiable". Not saying they have to linger on the scene, but bring in something like those two scenes in S1. No reason why they can't be interwoven into the plot since now VinCat is engaged. There should be more romantic steamy moments between them, especially if they've come back from a dangerous situation caused by the Big Bad out there. We still don't know who " it " is or "they are". How long is BK going to keep that going on? All in all, you've said it all and that's why the faithful fans (and there are many of us) are still waiting for an S1 mixed into S3.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm confused as to what made Heather and Matthew, her fiancé split so suddenly. Here she is back in New York picking out a wedding dress and then boom - it's over. So what's Heather's arc going to be in S3 - because right now, she's really nowhere. You may have a good thought about Heather's fiancé being someone who might behind these experiments. It's hard to figure into the story since the writers haven't even told us what this Matthew does for a living or how they met. It's quirky writing to say the least and the writers better start plugging up all the holes. The other thing I find weird, is that Catherine is going to get a new partner in Thursday's episode, but he gets hurt so why put her with a new partner at all? I'd rather see Tess and Cat be partners - it was working very well, but the writers are beginning to go all over the place in S3. You may be on to something Sarah, about Heather's ex-fiancé.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Don't worry about Catherine's new partner - he is actually quite nice and in awe of her. She can no longer be partners with Tess, so Tess HAS to give her a new partner - guess it is police protocol or something.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Do you think they might hook Heather up with him?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I doubt it. In S4 Heather will fall in love with an EMT who patches her up after some kind of mishap. I doubt that we will hear from Matthew again either, he was never cast.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think they only made Tess Captain to have her still covering for Vin/Cat and JT.

    ReplyDelete
  29. One of the things in really loved about season 1 was that intense romantic moment at the end after the threat or whatever was death with. There was that sweet dreamy moment like after AMP or the beginning of insatiable- or the several almost kisses- then finally the kiss after Vincent killed Darius- we wint every get those " firsts" again but there could be so many new fairy tale dreamy moments, especially for this season being focussing on the love!

  30. I read suspense novels and I like the idea of us trying to guess who the villain is going to be. Someone please tell me about the mythology you refer about. Did this come from the series where the beast look like a lion. I could not watch it. So clue me in so I can go on Fanatic TV and watch. I do not like copy cat stories. They never live up to the originals. I am satisfied by the kiss here and there for now. Hopefully it will get better later. They seem like they are still experimenting with the characters.

    ReplyDelete
  31. In my comment below, I was referring to the original Beauty and the Beast show, where yes, the beast looked like a lion. It starred Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton and is the version that this BATB was based upon. However, only the very basics of the premise were used for the new BATB; the shows have very little in common though they are both excellent. I don't recall anything about military experimentation in the original show, regarding Vincent's appearance and abilities; he was just born that way and lived in an underground community populated by people rejected by society. There was no comparable mythology; just the same premise about a beautiful, intelligent, tough woman in love with a man with beastly features.

    ReplyDelete
  32. These are really interesting points! I'd love to see Heather get more to do and be more developed as a character. And it's so odd that they never cast Matthew and may just drop him after so many repeated mentions that a lot of us had him all worked out as a villain and/or experiment victim.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't wait to see the episode!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, I don't get why the writers seem to be overreacting to the fan response to Season 2, misunderstanding what people were dissatisfied with. As you say, it was the love triangles, not the darkness, angst, and certainly not the heavier focus on mythology or faster pacing. No need to throw the good qualities of Season 2 out with the bathwater of Gabe and Tori, haha!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thank you for sharing that with me. I never watched it. I thought you were referring to the Rebecca/Alistair episode. It would be neat if they would have Vin/Cat go and trance the connection that Cat has with Rebecca. I wish they would let the fans get together and write the storylines.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sure! And yes, we should totally be writing the show; that would be awesome :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I know - I think these new producers don't like it written like it used to be. They want to change it - just hope it isn't too much. It would be nice if they put some of S1 moments into S3. We'll have to see if happens.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's true - she's in a good place to cover for them with her new promotion to Captain.

    ReplyDelete
  39. We never even got to meet Matthew even once. What a bummer. I do like that Heather meets and falls in love with an EMT - sounds interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  40. No i didn't mean that Catherine should BECOME superhuman LOL, i meant that she should only INVESTIGATE superhuman cases. Yeah i don't think we'll see anymore steamy scenes, CW shows actually DO have steamy scenes. There's comedy but more in the beginning and then all hell breaks loose, you're welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Let's hope he's played by Tyler Blackburn LOL

    ReplyDelete
  42. I figured you meant Cat should investigate these superhuman cases, but knowing BK I immediately thought he was going to do something to Catherine. If they would bring back Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin, I think we would get some of those steamy VinCat love scenes. Wish they would and get BK reassigned to another show. As long as he's with BATB I don't think we will because he doesn't want to give the fans what they want. We have to be content just to have BATB back. I love VinCat so I'm not going to depend on seeing what S1 brought us, I'll be happy if they keep the mystery/fantasy/intrigue/some love/ action and having Kick-Ass Catherine back. How about you Ivan?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am always curious to know what do they do with all the dead bodies. They could make more episodes if they would explain all the loose ends. Like Heather's boyfriend, why Heather never has her own place, and as hot as Vin/Cat feel about each other why they do not kiss hello, good morning, good night, touch more, and the look of love when they just look at each other.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Don't think the new producers like love scenes. The writers should be told to plug up the loose ends. If we see all the loose ends, are they blind and don't know they exist. They like to leave us hanging I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Who's Tyler Blackburn? Was he ever on BATB?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree with you. There are quite a few loose ends. BATB needs consistency rather than repeated quotes

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah i will never leave BATB, i may HATE Kern and i have never hated a showrunner before, especially since he showran Charmed, but i hate HIM but i'll be happy if the keep that too.

    ReplyDelete
  48. No it's my inside joke of having Nicole and Tyler back on screen together after their show Ravenswood was given the "C" word, they were each other's love interests on that show.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You'll love it, i'm still not over a certain scene that hit me hard and i didn't expect to feel ANYTHING for that certain character, you'll know what i mean when you see it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just trying to imagine a bathtub big enough to hold both the red-head and the 'one we will never mention again' and then loving the idea of dumping them both into the boat basin - hopefully at minus degrees. What a wonderful idea, Virginia, you little devil - you are my heroine!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Although it might be a good idea to have fans have input or write episodes, in my case nothing would ever reach completion, because I am such a nitpick at times and would NOT allow glaring plotholes or forget about Vincent's powers or completely change a person's character for NO reason at all (i.e. imposter Catherine of S2). Having said that I would have done S2 differently, of course. We could have still had Tori, but instead of Vincent falling for her, he would have ONLY been her mentor (like they promised us in the beginning of the season), but then Tori develps a crush on him and tries to lure him away from Catherine. At first she contrives little indicents where he is caught in 'situations' with her and when all the does not work to split them apart, she decides that Catherine has to go and goes after her in earnest, forcing Vincent to do something about it. Oh, and there is no slimeball ADA in my version, because, you know, he was riddled with bullets from a high-powered rifle with torn arteries and organs blown to pieces and MY Catherine - being the smart cookie she normaly is - wasted no further thought on him.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You will be surprized then that in the next episode Tess goes all 'I am the boss and you are the detective and you had better do as I say and that's an order!'

  53. Yeah, as long as BK doesn't steer it into an S2 plot again, I'll always stay with BATB because of the cast. If he ever starts splitting up VinCat like he did in S2, then I'm going to write a direct message to the CW via Twitter complaining about him. The show is just too good to be hacked up by someone who doesn't get the original meaning of what the series is about. So far the episodes have been enjoyable, but the depth of Vincent's and Catherine's love story is missing. Maybe if we're lucky, it'll come back into the plot at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh, oh - her promotion went to her head already. Tess got a taste of power and she's already barking orders. This is not a good friend. Can't wait to see that action and what Catherine's reaction is going to be. Maybe BK wrote this one since he's pretty much like that in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree - didn't know about Ravenswood - that would be a great hookup. Hope they do bring Tyler into BATB. Maybe Nicole might tell the powers that be about Tyler if they're looking for someone to fill the spot, that is, if he isn't busy with another project. We'll find out soon about who's coming in as Heather's love interest.

    ReplyDelete
  56. It'd be amazing if he DID appear as her love interest, but i think he'll be busy with PLL, it has another until it's over and he's a regular there.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yeah let's hope people start hating Tess as much as me LOL

    ReplyDelete
  58. You never know - sometimes actors do work in two shows. I guess it might depend on how much face time he'd get on BATB. It's going to be interesting to see who they bring in.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Let me tell you - I hated Tess and hoped she'd get hit by a train in S2 when Tess shot Vincent and then found out that Catherine was in love with him. Catherine tried to explain to her that he wasn't the one that was committing those murders, but Tess didn't want to hear of it. She told Catherine she couldn't be her friend and was ready to turn Catherine and Vincent in. Then she almost drowned in that tunnel and Vincent saved her and she slowly came around to being Catherine's friend again. Remember that episode? That's when I was hoping she'd get shot, hated Tess then. I know I'm not going to like her if she tries to pull rank now and the promotion goes to her head. She'll need to be beat down somehow or are we going to have put Tess on the "Big Bad List". It's not a good sign that she's a true friend to Catherine.

    ReplyDelete
  60. True and it's not like they'd have to kill him off, he only has one more year on PLL until it ends.

    ReplyDelete
  61. HA! Also Tess doesn't fit in with ANYONE, no chemistry with ANYONE, not transferred, she should be BUTCHERED in the in the most horrific way possible in a VERY slow death.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Poor Heather, she DOES fit if they give a good storyline and she actually does have chemistry with the cast, but TESS? Tess needs to die a very PAINFUL and SLOW death choking on her own blood. No but that was more hidden than the case with that Ray guy.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ivan, you crack me up. LOL Yep it was Sara that JT had a crush on and she was also a professor - what happened to her? We never heard anything more about her or what happened between her and JT. I thought he started dating her. Another mystery of the black hole where information is stored I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I agree with you about Heather, Ivan. She'd fit in if they would give her a good storyline, instead of having her wander aimlessly around, whining and being a real pain in the pratt. Right now I can't stand her because she gets into Catherine's business too much and invades their privacy. A lot of it carried over since S1 - it happened a lot in that season too. I don't know why they have Heather as a permanent member of the cast when she doesn't have that much of a part (at least so far she doesn't). I know the show she was in when she was splitting her time between BATB and Once Upon A Time, (I think it was) got cancelled. Suddenly she came back on BATB as a regular cast member. Looks like they didn't plan well as to how to fit Heather in except to be most annoying. Right now she's grating on my nerves.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yes, that is another loose end. I liked Sarah, and believe she can be a real asset, at least with the genetic research that JT is doing

    ReplyDelete
  66. They should bring her back again. JT was pretty crazy about her, but we never found out what happened to her.

    ReplyDelete
  67. They DID date but he had to break up with her after the whole thing with the warehouse blowing up LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  68. No she was on Ravenswood

    ReplyDelete
  69. You're right - forgot about the fact that the warehouse blew up because they had to make it look like the killer died in it. Vincent and JT had to go into the tunnels to get to the place JT is in now and no one had to know except Catherine. They were almost going to run to Canada. They skimmed it briefly so I forgot about what happened to Sarah.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks for filling me in about Sarah, Ivan. So there wasn't a hole in that story.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I thought she was also on Once Upon a Time too - where's my head at? Don't know what I was thinking. Nicole hadn't been on BATB toward the end when they were sending her to Florida and then she met Matthew and became engaged. When she came back Catherine was going with Gabe (choke).

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hi girls, gotta break into your conversation here, if you don't mind. JT did not break up with Sarah after they blew up the warehouse. Remember in 'Date Night' when they were already living at the Guild House, JT was getting ready to dress up to meet Sarah's parents in a restaurant. But he cancelled because 'Monobrow ADA' was on the loose as beast. JT was not unhappy having to cancel, because he was nervous of meeting the parents, guess that was a step to far for him.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yeah she's never been on Once Upon a Time LOL

    ReplyDelete
  74. Oh, so sorry Ivan, did not mean to offend you. Actually, it is good to have an injection of testosterone in an almost-all-female board. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Thanks for clearing that up for me, Ivan. Well - tonight is BATB. Can't wait for 8:00 pm. At least I don't have a headache going into the episode blind. A little info here and there doesn't hurt. I hope today just whizzes by.

    ReplyDelete
  76. In fact, nobody knew what happened to Sarah, she just kind of disappeared after the last episode of S2 when Vincent was trapped and kidnapped by Cat's father, Agent Reynolds ...

    ReplyDelete
  77. Ivan cleared it up. JT had to break up with Sarah because he and Vincent were making plans to run to Canada when the manhunt for Vincent was going on and Gabe sent his two crooked cops to find and kill Vincent. Catherine was ready to leave with Vincent and JT too. I think it was the episode after the "Insatiable" episode.

    ReplyDelete
  78. It's fine, i mean i haven't seen a male commenter in all 3 years of BATB that i can think of, should i feel embarrassed for liking the show? I've wondered that in all my years of watching somewhat female demographic shows. I feel like i'm not supposed to watch them, that it's against the rules or something.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I'm sure it will LOL, enjoy the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Thanks Ivan - just 2 1/2 hrs. to go. I'll let you all know what I think after I watch it. Oooooooh - getting excited.

    ReplyDelete
  81. OMG - A triple AWESOME episode - a real nail biter. My heart was pounding when Vincent was in the woods and Bob was shooting at him, there was no place for Vincent to hide. He does call Catherine "Cat" a lot now. I suppose it's BK's idea to make it something new. Still want him to call her Catherine though. So JT finally overloaded his body so that the serum burned itself out. Tess should listen more to Catherine because Catherine has an uncanny ability to know what's going to happen. I like her new partner Acheson, and I hope they keep him in the series. That's the end of Bob & Carol, Vincent killed Bob and Carol killed herself because she lost Bob. I really loved this episode because there was a lot of action. Just wish we had some hot VinCat lov'n in the end, but I'll take what they gave us. Now next week's epi has Catherine's bio dad in it and he seemed surprised that Vincent and Catherine are engaged. Somehow I don't trust him so it's going to be interesting to see what's going to happen in "Chasing Ghosts". I wouldn't trust Reynolds if I were VinCat. Would you?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Told you! LOL, those scenes in the woods were very intense, did you see how much Vincent was Beasted out?! No what Tess should is get ripped apart by a superhuman and then get thrown in front of a bus. I hated that they brought in a partner and to add insult to injury they brought back a little of the procedural element they got rid of in Season 1 and i hated it. BATB isn't a procedural anymore, it hasn't been one for 3 years so they never should've brought it back! I think we deserve a Vincat love scene, we're in a drought, i don't trust Reynolds as far as i can throw him, neither should they, ESPECIALLY Vincent. What still throws me off is that Catherine calls him "Dad". They were actually on Smallville together, he was her trainer when Lana wanted to become a warrior and then he came back as a different character, as Rick Flag.

  83. I asked this before, should i feel embarrassed for liking the show? I've wondered that in all my years of watching somewhat female demographic shows. I feel like i'm not supposed to watch them, that it's against the rules or something. Because i think i'm the ONLY guy who sees the show.

    ReplyDelete
  84. No you shouldn't feel embarrassed for liking this show. There are other guys out there who watch believe me. I've seen it on Twitter so don't be embarrassed. This show is a "kick-ass" action-packed show and just because those love scenes between VinCat were very sensual and well done, we would have to be dead not to like this series. When you compare the love scenes in Arrow or Flash to BATB, there's no comparison because those series don't have the chemistry between the lead stars that Jay and Kristin have. I find their story lines to be shallow with no depth also. Both Arrow and Flash have some corny episodes. I still maintain that this show is the best one on The CW and if they're too stupid to realize that, then I pity them. So don't feel embarrassed, Ivan - you just have good taste in what you watch.

    ReplyDelete
  85. No, of course not - there are no rules. I am watching it for KK and not so much for JR, while most women are watching it for Jay, I suppose. There are no rules and if there were i would not care. I like to hear a man's perspective on this show, too. I wish I could get my husband to watch it, but he refuses. He is tv producer and ueber critical of the plots, plot holes, stupid dialogues, repetitive phrases and a whole slew more.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I really liked the episode and it was wonderful on the surface, it is just when you start thinking about it, you see the problems with the writing. I am trying to take a lighter approach, but it still bothers me when they mess with Vincent's powers.
He should have blurred in the woods. He could have easily saved that Daniels guy and then circled back and gotten behind Bob and overpowered him in about 5 seconds. But in this episode the writers elected to take that power away from Vincent, because it did not fit into the plot - I call that lazy writing! Also, Vincent needs to change his cell phone service provider. Neither Bob nor JT had problems connecting to their loved ones on the cell, only Vincent could not talk to Catherine nor she to him.
Also, Lake Placid is a four hour drive from downtown NYC, so I guess JT hired a private jet to arrive just in time to save Vincent. And there is NO NY hospital that has an outreach program that takes their doctors 4 hours to get to the patients. Those were just the more obvious issues, but don't let my logical approach spoil the episode for you. Seriously, every tv show out there has these problems - some more some less. This show just has them in spades sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I noticed JT getting up to the woods in record breaking time, but you have to remember this is fantasy. I enjoyed this episode and the action it had as well as the plot, but if they were to write everything in real time, it would take more than two hours for the story to unfold. What the writers should do is insert the captions "3 hrs. later", "the day before", "day after"," week before", etc., to fill in those time gaps. I think Catherine and Vincent had cell phone problems because Carol and Bob were jamming their cell phones. Catherine mentioned it to her new partner that Carol was jamming her cell phone, and told him to drive back to the precinct and get help, even though he was shot. Remember when Cat's new partner got shot because Carol was aiming for Cat, but he got in the way. Then Catherine went into the building with her gun drawn and had it out with Carol who was in the building that used to be an old lab. The only gap I saw was JT getting to the woods as fast as he did.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Thanks, i always feel like i can't talk about or even deny that i watch some leaning toward female demographic-like shows because i feel like i'd be judged and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  89. YES! A Tess hater, welcome to my little club, the slogan is "Kill Tess and laugh when she dies" LOL, they weren't programmed. It was true heartbreak, Vincent and Catherine would do the same in my opinion. What i CAN tell you is that Catherine and Vincent DO get married. They're wearing wedding bands in photos i saw of them filming Season 4, now if they give us a full-blown wedding: vows, ring exchange, "Just Married" sign on the back of their limo. THAT i can't tell you. Wedding night, that's my hope is when they'll wreck their hotel room in Rome and the residents will have to evacuate the country because of the sounds and growls Vincat is making LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Thanks and um i uh watch Arrow and The Flash actually LOL, but my ships aren't basically happening for now. I always feel strange when i watch shows skewing towards a female demographic so thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I've joined your club of Tess Haters. She really grated on my nerves and even when she burst into the interrogation room and yelled at Carol about JT, I would have shot her if I were Catherine. Totally lost control for a "Captain", yet she can't keep helping her "best friend" Catherine. Tess talks out of both sides of her mouth. I would have shot myself if I had to contend with Heather too. So we will have a wedding - I'm happy about that. I hope we do get a night like "Any Means Possible" because VinCat deserve time to be by themselves with no ONE or ANYTHING BIG & BAD interfering with THEIR NIGHT. I say, let the clothes fly and the roll begin - Lord knows we've waited for some hot stuff from this couple with an awful lot of "chemistry". It should make the ratings go through the ceiling if BK decides to put a scene like that in. In the meantime, something to look forward to. Did you notice the rings on their fingers in the still shots of them with Vincent on a bicycle and both Catherine and Vincent are wearing white shirts? I didn't notice the rings, but when I saw that still I thought it would be nice if they were on their honeymoon. It looks like their out in the country. Am I wrong or right?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ivan, I watch Arrow and The Flash too, but I don't see where they are better than BATB. Both those two shows have couples with NO chemistry and there are a lot of dumb lines and gaps in the story lines also. (In fact, Oliver moves from one woman to another constantly and Barry can't get off the pot with Iris - talk about boring). BATB has a lot of action as well as a different kind of romance that no other series has. You've got to admit, you got hooked when you watched it. The only thing I see that could have the ratings so high for both Arrow and The Flash is that more younger viewers (18 - 25 yr. olds) watch those two shows. BATB has the sci-fi fantasy with a deep love story which appeals more to the older viewers (30 - 50 yr. olds) and particularly women, although I know for a fact that a lot of guys watch it also. Don't feel you shouldn't watch BATB because of the female demographic - that's a lot of bull - when a show appeals to you, no matter what the demographic, watch it. Some shows I like have a lot of male demographics, but that doesn't stop me from watching them. (I loved "24.) I'm not into comedies - I love to be blown away and escape into a world of action, sci-fi, mystery and a good love story. Having a "kick-ass" no-nonsense female star is a bonus and a nice change. Should I be embarrassed that I like a lot of these "male" dominated demographics - hell no. If it gives me an hour or two of a nice escape from the reality of the real world, I just love it and look forward to it. I have a very stressful job and BATB is the perfect escape for me. You don't know how I've got my fingers crossed that we get a S5, but who knows with BK running things. So you keep watching BATB because it's getting better and better with each episode. I'm totally loving S3 and it sounds like you and a lot of us on this site are enjoying it a lot too. Sorry to be so long winded.

  94. Actually i saw them just walking in their regular clothes, no bikes LOL

    ReplyDelete
  95. It's fine and thank you, i'm mad that Ycvonne Strahovski won't be the new face of 24. I loved her on 24: Live Another Day, i never saw the original show or movie but did you like her as Kate Morgan?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Yvonne was perfect as Kate Morgan. If Kiefer brings 24 back, I really wanted her to come back. That was a terrific show and quite a ride. I've seen it from the beginning to when it ended and loved every episode. I'm still waiting for it to come back. I read somewhere that Kiefer was thinking of bringing it back, but I haven't seen anything more about it. Haven't seen Yvonne in anything new either.

    ReplyDelete
  97. They want to have a whole new character, not Kate OR Bauer, a "terrorist hunter"

    ReplyDelete
  98. Awww - too bad. It's not going to be "24" without Bauer and Kate. I think Kiefer doesn't want to do it anymore. I just hope it turns out to be good. Every episode of "24" was a heart pounding ride. Maybe that's what should happen to Catherine - she should quit the force and go to work full time as an Agent for DHS. This way she doesn't have to take orders from Tess and she can pursue these strange things that have to do with mythology and sci-fi. It will leave more time for VinCat to spend with each other if she doesn't have two jobs to juggle and she can always depend on Vincent to help. Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  99. They want Bauer cameos on the show if it happens

    ReplyDelete
  100. Why have Bauer cameos when they could have Bauer - nobody is going to fill the role like Jack Bauer. I like the idea of "terrorist hunter", but who could play it as well as Kiefer? I thought they were going to do a full length movie of "24", but that hasn't happened yet either.

    ReplyDelete
  101. They actually dumped that idea just before 24: Live Another Day premiered.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Imagine dumping such a great series and not wanting to make a full length movie. They could have made some big bucks because "24" had a huge following. What's wrong with these people - they have some great series, but they don't handle them right. They seem to only favor some pretty stupid shows. You know what I'm hoping would happen (and I think I've said this before), I wish VinCat would elope and leave those meddlers (Heather, Tess and yes even JT) holding the bag. They butt into Vincent and Catherine's business too much. I'd love for Vincent and Catherine to tell them off. I guess we don't get to see Vincent's nephew Aaron, the firefighter either - he's part of Vincent's family. Another missed opportunity on behalf of the showrunner to bring him in and get him involved with Heather. So many ways to go with this series and BK is stuck on the same track.

    ReplyDelete
  103. So, JT is no longer teaching at University? He looks like he is doing full-time research at NY General??

    ReplyDelete
  104. I don't know where JT is since he tried going back to the University. It looked as though he was busy trying to find an antidote to the serum he was given. I thought he was at NY General just to help Vincent that one time. JT seems to be staying home most of the time, but now that the serum is out of his system, we'll find out where he's working.

    ReplyDelete
  105. What was your favorite Kate scene in 24: LAD?

    ReplyDelete
  106. All the episodes of "24" were terrific - I don't think there was one scene that was better than any of the previous scenes. I did love the scene where Jack and Kate were fleeing for their lives with missles raining down after them and Jack was driving like a maniac to avoid getting hit. They go into a tunnel and Jack and Kate get into another car and speed out of there which bought them some time before being discovered by the terrorists that they hopped into another vehicle. Kate looked at Jack who was driving like a wild man, but didn't lose her cool. She sat there very calmly ready to take whatever would happen. This girl had guts.
