I’m not even sure what to think about this episode and it’s hard for me to even write a review. This episode was the definition of filler. I guess they had to lower their production costs and decided to air an episode with barely any original footage. This means we missed out on something that makes this show so great, the ensemble. Sure, they were all together for the handful of original scenes, but for the most part, almost every scene was exclusively Ben/Danny/Riley.
With that being said, there was something for everyone and it was nice to revisit some of my favorite Baby Daddy moments, but I don't think a whole episode devoted to it was necessary. Have they run out of good ideas? I liked the mishaps with the wedding dress and I thought they could have done a lot more with it and even included more planning problems to give the episode more content. Pairing all these flashbacks up with a wedding dress centered episode felt weird. They could have done this at the rehearsal dinner or a party with flashbacks during each of their speeches or something. It just all felt very out of place within the context of the episode. If I wanted to watch clips of Danny/Riley or Ben/Riley I would look them up on YouTube or watch old episodes on Netflix. I think flashbacks alone would have been fine, but it was long scenes, one after the other, which felt very disjointed and out of place throughout the episode. The episode was advertised as the whole group reflects on their past relationship mistakes but instead it was so focused on the love triangle and Tucker was only shoved at the end. It could have been fun to have montages of all their failed relationships (similar to Tucker’s bit) because we know they've all had many, and then include each other prominently a few times. It just felt excessive. And I’m not just talking about Ben and Riley’s clips, but all of it.
This episode was definitely setting us up for something though by reminding us of all the love triangle’s key moments. I feel like the clips really highlighted how much Danny has always loved and cared about her, and for everyone counting, there was one more montage for Danny/Riley… meaningful? I think so. It was even set to cheesy, romantic music! There were some really great lines from Danny and Riley which had me very happy and excited. They're still so cute after all this time and all this drama. The writers know exactly how to reel me back in, and they know exactly what to say. Here’s a few of my favorite lines from this episode (I’m not including any from flashbacks because they technically aren't from this episode and there would just be wayyy too many).
“If anyone ever speaks of this they’ll be going to a wedding and a funeral.” - Danny
“I just can’t believe your mom’s getting married. Again. Before me.” - Riley
“And Me. What? I have dreams.” - Tucker
“Well you may be done, but I still have to tell my mom that Danny looks better in her dress than she does.” - Ben
“Your mom is going to be a beautiful bride.” - Riley
“Not as beautiful as you’ll be one day.” - Danny
“I knocked over the mouthwash. At least it’s something blue.” - Danny
“I love, love.” - Danny
“Me too. I just wish it loved me back.” - Riley
“But we took such perfect care of it!” - Tucker
What did you think of this episode? Did you enjoy the trip down memory lane or would you have preferred a truly new episode? What was your favorite flashback moment? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for reading and see you next week!
I've seen clip shows that, for some reason, worked a lot better than this one. I think I would have been happier with a Bottle Show (another time honored way for a show to save money in their budget.)
ReplyDeleteMelissa and Joey was a clip show, too. I guess the network wanted them.
ReplyDeleteI kinda think as well as being a recap it was Riley trying to make a decision which could be made in next episode or two.... ie Ben or Danny. Personally I'm hoping that both brothers move on but I doubt that's something the writers would do.
ReplyDeleteI think they chose to do a clip show because Melissa and Joey was a clip show.... Which made sense because that show is ending soon.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it has to do with the writers running out of ideas. Sitcoms tend to have these clip show episodes. Friends had one almost every season, and this isn't even the first clip show in Baby Daddy's history. However, I agree that they're annoying. I was looking forward to seeing it, only to find out that it is a clip show. I fast-forwarded the episode, so it only took me like 8 minutes to watch it. I was a bit disappointed.
