American Odyssey - Cancelled by NBC

Jul 1, 2015

NBC is not commenting, but I’ve learned it’s now a done deal — low-rated freshman drama American Odyssey is over. I hear the series co-creator/director/executive producer Peter Horton, for whom the globe-spanning thriller had been a passion project, personally called the cast to give them the news.

The decision comes two days after the midseason series aired its season – and now series – finale as the options on the cast expire tonight. The serialized drama starring Anna Friel never took off – launching with a 1.2 in 18-49 and 5.4 million viewers in April, holding onto half of its lead-in from the A.D.: The Bible continues. It quickly slipped under one demo ratings point and then under 0.5 ratings point in Live+same day, with the final couple of episode, including last Sunday’s closer, logging a 0.4 in 18-49. Even before NBC formally pulled the plug by letting the options on the cast expire, star Friel already had been getting interest, including an offer for the lead in the retooled CBS drama pilot Doubt.

Not surprised about this cancellation. Pulling a .4 finale was horrible.

  2. No surprises here. I think premiering in April and being placed on Sunday nights essentially meant it was dead too. I have a few more episodes to finish before the finale. For those who finished the season, does it end with any type of closure? I presume not.

  4. I gave up after a few episodes. Another show where all TPTB are corrupt and you can't win. I like a little hope in my diversions.

I checked in again in the finale and no surprises there either.

  7. Well that's not a surprise. It was a good show though and the finale certainly showed how a season 2 would have turned out.

  11. I watched the show yesterday and show is not bad at all. Final episode was a bit rush but all others were really nice. If they renewed it, 13-14 episodes would work really nice for such show.

  12. Yeah, last few scenes said everything what season 2 would be about. Colonel Stephen Glen

  14. And nobody was surprised. I myself couldn't bother even finishing the show, in spite of being so far into it (I gave up around episode 9 or 10)...
