2015 CHARACTER CUP WINNER:
SAMANTHA "ROOT" GROVES
It's been 63 polls (plus extras), but we finally have a winner. Congratulations to Samantha "Root" Groves of Person of Interest, who also got the most votes of any contestant and was the only contestant to receive over 2,000 votes in each round. This makes Root the first female to ever win the Character Cup. She joins Jack from LOST and Dean and Castiel from Supernatural in our Hall of Retired Winners. Congratulations to Person of Interest fans, Shameless fans, and all other fandoms for supporting their favorites and helping to make this a record-breaking Character Cup. I hope you join us for the Favorite Show Contest that starts Monday.
Congratulations also go to Senko, for winning our prediction contest with 40 out of 63 correct predictions. You rock! All bragging rights go to you! Other top predictors were LOST Rocks Forever and ASN1. Great job. It's been fun comparing how different the contest turned out and where people thought it would go.
In our Vehicle Contest, the winners were the Impala from Supernatural in the Continuing Shows division and the Enterprise from Star Trek from the Ended Shows division. Thanks so much to everyone who participated either through voting, predicting, or commenting. Your voting broke records (see below) while the discussions were excellent, still my favorite part of the contest. I appreciate everyone who participated in the TV Talk Topics for making my hiatus go by a little faster. It was awesome talking TV with all of you. Special thanks also goes out to those who submitted pictures for the polls. Without you we would never have been able to change pictures for each poll. You guys rock! Finally thanks as always to Andy, without whom there would be no SpoilerTV, the best TV website I have ever had the privilege to be a part of.
Thanks again for joining us and don't forget the Favorite Show Contest coming in August. Nominations start Monday and I know it will be an exciting race too. Check back at Spoiler TV to submit your nominees and of course to discuss your favorite shows. There's lots more good TV Talk to be had.

YAS, ROOT!
ReplyDeleteYay Root!
ReplyDeleteThank you for organizing this, Dahne!
https://31.media.tumblr.com/2620138549d708f2c8bcab2d3f95e46c/tumblr_nrfvlfASZJ1qb658io8_r1_400.gif https://33.media.tumblr.com/a63b35e6f45f7c9078d75296b0bfb736/tumblr_nrfvlfASZJ1qb658io7_r1_400.gif
Massive thanks Dahne for taking the time to run such an excellent competition.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot of fun reading all the TV Discussion and seeing all the fandoms promoting their shows.
You've set a high standard for next years comp.
P.S Thanks for the stats. I'm a sucker for them!
I love the stats too, thanks for putting all this together!
ReplyDeleteActual ray of sunshine.
ReplyDeleteCongrats POI fandom! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for a fun ride!
I never saw the last poll (and I don't watch either show), but I'm glad a female won. Loved the stats as well, Dahne, they're quite interesting. Can't wait for the favourite show contest, now to just get through the weekend til Tuesday (#timezonedifferences).
ReplyDeleteSeems to be the Year of Root right now.
ReplyDeleteSame character won my tournament in May.
Congrats POI fans on making a loud statement this year.
yes, LOVED the stats breakdown.
ReplyDeleteI could spend an hour reading over a break down of all the stats.
One of the reasons I do my own awards/character tourney is purely for the statistical info to read over.
Dahne, you are a machine (no pun intended). Great job.
Woo, Reid, making some nice jumps there :D! Not bad, not bad at all.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to "Person of Interest"/Root fans! It's been fun, I look forward to doing this again next year :). I like the statistics, too-I like that the male/female character balance seemed fairly close or straight even as the contest went on. And I'm not even remotely surprised the Impala would win the mini-contest for continuing series :p.
Look forward to the show competition next. Thanks again, Dahne, for running this competition.
;)
ReplyDeleteThis competition was quite a ride. I would have loved to see Mickey win this, but I'm fine with Root as well. I just hope that after this a lot of people will watch the show and that we can try again next year! =D
ReplyDeleteYay Root! And the first female Character Cup champion =), that is awesome!
ReplyDeleteShe is such a strong, kick ass female character, so I'm really glad that she is the first, hope she is the first of many more kick ass woman to win Character Cup.
Thanks again Dahne for running this =) You rock!
Thanks for doing all this Dahne! It was quite fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks for running this Dahne. Even though I've not participated as much as I wanted to, it's been fun. Love the stats too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the series comp plugs. Nominations open Monday!!!!!!!
Matt Murdock is nothing but consistent.16th seeded character ended up 15th in the actual competition :)
ReplyDeleteGreat competition Dahne, enjoyed it a lot.We all appreciate your hard work. This made tolerating this dreadful hiatus a little easier than before.Keep up the good work. Now waiting for the Best Show Cup.
Congrats to Root, and Mickey, and Peggy! I got some dissapointments in the earlier stage, because some of my favourites were cut very early for the competition. But I'm happy for the characters left in the finale!
ReplyDeleteAnd OMG, I won the challonge competition, I didn't really thought I would win :D
Thank you Dahne for organizing this and for the stats facts, I always love reading these. I can't wait for the show's competition!
Congrats on winning the prediction competition
ReplyDeleteWONDERFUL BABY !!!!! Dean is very, very happy and me tooo !!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I was hoping Job will make it further, but oh well, there's always another year.
ReplyDeleteVery happy Root won.
ReplyDeleteWhat shows have won the best series competition in years past and are they also ineligible?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2014/10/the-spoilertv-hall-of-fame-page.html
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to thank you, Dahne! You are just amazing and awesome for running this cup again! You put in a lot of work and I honestly don't think that you get enough credit :)
ReplyDeleteYAAAAAAS!!!!! Congrats Root!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Root and POI fans, a well deserved win.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dahne for all your hard work and passion you put into this competitions. Seems only yesterday we were nominating our favorite characters, I can't believe it's over already.
Interesting stats, good to see more and more people come here and participate in STV.
And.....POOR JOB!!! At the bottom of the list. Banshee fans, we have a year to make him more popular :P
Me too, although Job is from a bit of a cult show. He's one of my fav characters though.
ReplyDeleteFirst female and probably first LGBT character? :)
ReplyDeleteI'm very happy Root won. She's not my favorite POI character, but I still like her. (Favorite is Finch)
ReplyDeleteThanks Dahne for running this again, it's been fun.
Cheers for running the contest Dahne, your hard work over the last couple of weeks has been greatly appreciated and I've really enjoyed taking part in the voting and conversations :)
ReplyDeleteHe was very unlucky to be up against such tough competition in the first round :(
ReplyDeleteCongrats for coming first place in the predictions! I'm just happy I managed to finish in the top third (18th) as I was weak minded when I filled it in and put down far too many characters that I wanted to win each round rather than I thought would actually win, haha!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Root - more evidence to join the POI fandom! Thanks Dahne for your hard work and epic arrangements - more to come!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to it! How many shows will we get to nominate this year?
ReplyDeleteTwo current, two finished. Same as every year ;)
ReplyDeleteSeeing Job at the very bottom of that list is horrible. He's amazing!
ReplyDeleteI wonder who might win the favourite Show contest (just kidding, we all know that PoI will most likely take this one, too).
ReplyDeleteI am happy that Peggy made place three and fulfilled my prediction that she would end up being the most popular comic book show character.
I am not so sure if POI fandom can do it. The new regulations require identification with either Google, Facebook or Twitter account. A huge part of our fanbase is in Chine which has no access to either, which means mainland China is basically locked out. But DarkUFO is on it, trying to get the poll company to offer more sign-in options :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure the Chinese fans will make a huge difference. Over the last 4 days which included the semi-finale and final, we only had 125 people in total access the site from China, and a number of those were not related to the Character Cup. So whilst it's unfortunate that they will miss out if they don't have Twitter, Facebook or Google, in the grand scheme it's such a small % that they will not effect any of the polls.
ReplyDeleteCool info, can you tell about Russia?
ReplyDeleteWhat would you like to know?
ReplyDeletetotal access to the site
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting, Andy. Thanks also to everyone who played nice and kept this contest fun. I really appreciate it. It was great discussing with everyone.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. I'm a big fan of stats and trends too. I loved all teh great discussion in this contest.
ReplyDeleteHa! Thanks. I like breaking down the stats and looking at trends too.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm glad you like them.
ReplyDeleteI expect quite the turnout for the Favorite Show contest. It should be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI thought you'd like that Reid stat. He did very well. Thanks for being such a great conversationalist throughout the Cup. It was great talking to you. By the way, I was on the edge of my seat with the Vehicle Contest. :D Both Baby and Enterprise were in tighter races than the living characters. I loved that there was only 1 vote between Serenity and Enterprise with 45 minutes to go.
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't get to use this photo in the actual contest. I could never get it to crop right without looking a little grainy. I also hope that strong women characters continue to represent in this contest.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for participating.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you. Thanks for participating when you could.
ReplyDeleteThanks. The Favorite Show contest should be a lot of fun. Thanks for participating. My guess is that if season 2 of Daredevil comes out close to when Cup nominations come out, Matt will do even better next year.
ReplyDeleteHuzzah Senko!
ReplyDeleteDahne - Is "Original Rankings" the number of nominations received? It's too early to be thinking.
Congrats on being the big prediction winner this year. That's fantastic! I'm glad you like the stats and thanks for participating. The Favorite Show Contest will be a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteAs Banshee continues to grow on this site, I think Job's chances are even better next year. It's just a matter of getting enough nominations to begin with.
ReplyDeleteIf he gets the nominations next year, I thnk he could do fairly well given that Banshee gets more popular all the time.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on pulling up to 18th. I always make 2 brackets. One is for who I think will win and the other is for my favorites. I do poorly in both but it is fun to see the differences. Plus it makes it easier to vote sometimes.
ReplyDeleteIt was close but I'm glad Metallicar eked out her win. She is most deserving of admiration and respect.
ReplyDeleteThe Favorite Show Contest does not have a 1 and done policy so shows can win multiple times.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your support. I really appreciate it. I have your TV Talk Topic on my list of ones to definitely discuss next year. Thanks for giving it and sorry we didn't get to it this time.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Once we get started, this Cup does move quickly to the finale. I think you have an excellent chance of improving Job's ranking if he gets enough nominations next year. The show seems to be growing steadily more popular here.
ReplyDeleteI doubt he'll remain at the bottom next year, provided he gets enough nominations. I think the pictures and discussion prompted some speculation about his character and probably will get some people to check out the show.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for participating. I look forward to discussing more with you next time.
ReplyDeleteI hope so. It's a superb show and he's a superb character, and more people really need to be checking it out.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I've loved discussing with you too.
ReplyDeleteThat interesting. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNow let's do a crossover where we get Root driving the Metallicar, lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Don't forget the Favorite Show Contest next.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the classy attitude. I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! And it's totally okay *hugs*
ReplyDeleteIt would be cool to have stats on how many people from how many different countries visit the site. If it's not too much work of course.
ReplyDeleteI don't even want to know the numbers for the Eastern US. I feel the need to put on dark glasses and hide now that I realize you know that I'm basically a STV stalker. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you. I had a really great time and I really enjoyed the TV Topics this year. Great job. I know you're tired!
ReplyDeleteAgreed, it hurts to see.
ReplyDeleteBoth winner and runner up lie somewhere on the LGBT segment.
ReplyDeleteWe do this stats roundup at the end of each year
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2014/12/2014-year-end-stats-most-popular-shows.html
We'll be doing the same at the end of this year as well. It should give you a good idea of the Top 20 Countries.
In the last week we've had 12,000 views from Russia.
ReplyDeleteCool. thanks for the link. Although my county is not in the Top 20 ;)
ReplyDeleteThink of this this way.
ReplyDeleteHe came 64th out of 610.
Cool, I will be internally agonising over which four to put forward throughout the weekend, lol.
ReplyDeleteWhat country are you from?
ReplyDeleteI will probably do that next year, it's a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, I like numbers )
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure.
ReplyDeleteWhen is the best show cup?
ReplyDeleteNominations begin Monday :)
ReplyDeleteI've already decided on mine and it was actually pretty easy, lol. 24 being in the finished category made it one hell of a lot easier, because I wasn't left with three to pick from in current lol.
ReplyDeleteVery true. Every character that made it into the Cup was already a winner.
ReplyDeleteNope. Nobody else gets to drive Dean's Baby except of course Sammy and psychics who put the mind meld on him,
ReplyDeleteOriginal rankings are how the characters were placed in the brackets based on nominations and rankings polls. See can see the whole process here: http://dahne1.blogspot.com/2015/07/2015-character-cup-ranking-process.html
ReplyDeleteThanks for always being an awesome participant. You rock! I am celebrating the end by taking my two favorite toddlers to the train museum in just a bit. It's nice to get away from a computer for awhile and they will definitely keep me on my toes.
ReplyDeleteI am a bit late to the party, but thank you dahne! The competition was so much fun and brilliantly done! I am reallt excited for the show cup now!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dahne, it is appreciated. It´s fun to see the numbers. I look forward to nominating my favourite shows. :-)
ReplyDeleteRoot has a motorcycle. She don't need no car ;)
ReplyDeleteVery true.
ReplyDeletewell done interface, and thanks POI International!
ReplyDeleteAustria
ReplyDeleteThanks for the stats, it's interesting to compare from last year and see the changes.
ReplyDeleteI'll be anxiously awaiting the Show Cup! If you need any help with any part of the competition (even if it's just for finding pictures), please just let me know. I'd be happy to help :).
Thanks Dahne :) It was a lot of fun. Congrats to Root and POI also. I'm glad Mickey and Peggy came 2nd and 3rd :) Loved reading the stats and looking forward to the favourite show contest!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on winning the challenge competition! Well done :).
ReplyDeleteIndeed :).
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome-thanks for giving us such great topics to discuss! I had fun talking with you, too.
Haha, oh, wow, that's crazy. I love that even the mini-contest was a close race :D.
Don't ruin my imagination :(
ReplyDeleteI think one look at Root, and Dean would hand her the keys.
ReplyDeleteDahne, Thank you for all the effort, love and time you put into The Character Cup! Your work is highly appreciated! Already looking forward to next year ;-)
ReplyDeleteAt least House cracked the Top 20. Congrats Root! I'm still at a point in my POI catch up where I'm not a huge fan of her character yet, but I'm sure I'll love her soon.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Dahne!
No way. He'd want to hand her the keys to his motel sure, but he doesn't hand anyone the keys to Baby except Sammy. He certainly didn't hand his keys to Andrea and she looked exactly like Root.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your participation. I think the Favorite Show Contest is going to be a blast.
ReplyDeleteBradley runs the Favorite Show Contest so I'm not sure if he will need pictures or not. Thanks for all your help here.
ReplyDeleteThanks and thanks for participating. Your enthusiasm was a great encouragement. I think you'll love the Fav. Show Contest too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for participating. I geek out about the stats and last year someone wanted me to share. It's cool to see others interested in them too. The Fav. Show Contest is even bigger than this one so it is always a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteAww, thank you. I always look forward to this Cup because I can discuss TV with some great people. Thanks for participating and I'll see you next year.
ReplyDeleteHeym he jumped up 24 places, so that's awesome! It's especially true because he is on an ended show, which makes it even harder to even get in. House did well.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the POI fandom - perhaps I will grow to like Root as I get further in my catch up.
ReplyDeleteSo happy that Peggy took 3rd - amazing feat considering she only has 8 episodes under her belt. Super happy to see Reid jumped up so many places :-)
Congrts to the prediction winners. I was literally the exact middle of the pack - which was an improvement over the year before so hey, I'm going it the right direction!
Thanks Dahne for a fabulous competition! The last few weeks have just flown by thanks to all the great conversation, prediction surprises and the unexpected mini-polls. Can't wait for the Show competition and you better believe that I'll be randomly Tweeting or mentioning new talk topics as I think of them over the next year!
Question (apologies if someone already asked and I missed it in comments) - the final vote had over 55,000 votes total - is that a record for a single head to head poll in the website's history?
Thanks so much Dahne, I had a lot of fun, I am already looking forward to next year :)
ReplyDeleteI love the stats, so thanks for that too. See you in the show cup.
First, congrats to the PoI fandom you guys came to play, I'm proud because a woman took it all, I'm also happy because it's giving me a new show to catch up on, and also like to Thank Dahne for the extremely hard work that was obviously put in, compiling the stats enjoyable to the readers, looking forward to next summer, will be back for it as well, really helped with the summer tv abyss, great job!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf Root could get a man to quickly marry her with her being in a wedding dress in one episode, I'm sure she could get the keys out of Dean's hand and drive off maniacally.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen Supernatural? No judgment. Just asking. Amy Acker guest starred in the third episode, which just happened to be the one that I fell in love with Supernatural with by the way. Still there is no way in heaven, hell, earth, Purgatory, wacky alternative Canadian reality, parent-meeting time traveling past, apocalyptic future vision, TV universe nightmare, djinn-juiced happy world, or Lucifer inspired fruit bat fever dream that Dean would EVER hand over the keys to his Baby to Root. That car is Winchester blood, sweat, and soul and only a Winchester drives her. (Notable exception - being mind melded when a powerful, demon blooded psychic whammies you. And that's only once in over 200 episodes)
ReplyDeleteGlad you are going in the right direction for the prediction contest. I am totally going backwards. Thanks so much for being so much fun to discuss with. This Cup really was one surprise after another and kep me on my toes a lot with the close races. The Show Contest will be just as epic I think. Thanks for sending TV Talk suggestions my way. I love it! Hope to talk to you very soon about them.
ReplyDeleteI don't have time to search right now about the final poll numbers. I did go back to the most exciting contest we've ever had in my opinion - the Supernatural vs. Fringe Best Show finale - but that one only got ~22,000 votes
Thank you for participating. I'm glad you had fun and that you're redy for more. I can't wait for next year too. I thinkthe Show Contest is going to be just as exciting.
ReplyDeleteI was nice to have a female winner and I hope that it becomes fairly balanced in the future. Thanks you for participating and being such an encourager. I really appreciate it. My summer is flying by too and soon it will be time for the fall season. Can't wait to do it again next summer. Glad you'll be joining us.
ReplyDeleteThank you for participating.
ReplyDeleteAh, thanks for the clarification.
ReplyDeleteNo worries :-) I'm thinking the best show contest might break some records too.
ReplyDeleteno way in heaven, hell, earth, Purgatory, wacky alternative Canadian reality, parent-meeting time traveling past, apocalyptic future vision, TV universe nightmare, djinn-juiced happy world, or Lucifer inspired fruit bat fever dream
ReplyDeleteYou put that together so nicely, I need to use it as a bio somewhere.
I totaly agree !! BABY is a very important character with a big personality !!!
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think I even said how that's Root's never before mentioned sister?
ReplyDeleteI said all of this on sarcasm alone and you're taking this way too hardcore.
