Two weeks, 915 nominations, and over 65 prediction brackets later, it's time to start the 2015 Character Cup. Woo hoo! First thanks so much to everyone who helped get pictures so we could start using them this round instead of round 2. I really appreciate you guys. And now, on with the show. The goal of this contest is to pass the hiatus with great TV Talk and have a little fun so before you head straight to the polls, please take time to read over the rules.
Rules:
1. This is a Silly Internet Contest, Not the Fate of the Nations - This contest is meaningless. The results are meaningless. It will NOT change the fate of any TV show anywhere. Don't take it seriously. Have fun. Discuss a lot.
2. Focus on Characters, Not People - Anyone can vote however they want for whatever reason they want and anyone can give their opinion on a character, favorable or not. Talking negatively about a character is NOT the same as attacking their fans. Keep the conversation to the characters. If you don't like what someone says about your character, comment on what you love about them. You might get new people to try your show.
3. The Aliens Haven't Landed. There's No Conspiracy Here - I have no hidden agenda. Everything is placed in brackets based on the number of nominations and polls. If your character goes against a giant, it's not personal. Mine will too. There's also no secret underground of people cheating polls. No one gets paid for that so no one has time for that, especially since this contest means absolute squat. It's just for fun.
4. Leave Sour Grapes on the Vine - Yeah, it sucks when your favorite gets kicked off by a show you hate. Yep, the winning character will come from the most organized fandom that gets the word out the fastest. Them's the facts of life and the internet. It doesn't mean we can't still have fun. Don't dwell on past polls or vetch about life's unfairness and it will be more enjoyable.
5. It's Not 2048 and My Name's Not Dorian - I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly and let you know the approximate time each poll ends. However, I am human and occasionally do silly things like get the time zone changes wrong. Again see #3. Let me know and I'll fix it. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties.
6. Comments are the Wellspring of Hiatus Life - Most of us anxiously await the return of our favorite shows. Why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day we have a new topic. Come join us because even if you have no one to vote for in the polls, you can still discuss. While this contest is just a silly piece of internet fluff, the conversation here goes deep so jump on in.
Nuts and Bolts:
1. All polls, even the final one, will be about 24 hours long. A new poll goes up every day unless something unforeseen happens so you always know when your favorites compete.
2. Everything is head-to-head competition unless there's a tie and then both go to the next round.
3. One vote per IP per poll.
Today's TV Talk Topic:
There are a lot of awesome characters and unfortunately not all of them could get in. Below are the characters who just missed getting into the contest so it seems fair to begin our TV Talk by honoring them. Also, are there any shows you love that don't have a character representing them? This is a great time to talk about those shows that did not get a character into the Character Cup too. Who knows? Maybe you will get others to try your show so the character can get in next time.
Characters who just missed the cut-off: Jake Peralta (Brooklyn 99), Kiera Cameron (Continuum), Stella Gibson (The Fall), Mal Reynolds (Firefly), Rachel Berry (Glee), Jane Villaneuva (Jane the Virgin), Boyd Crowder (Justified), Michael Samuelle (La Femme Nikita), Tamsin (Lost Girl), Alex Vause (Orange is the New Black), Wolfgang Bogdanow and Nomi Marks (Sense8), Titus Andromedon (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), and Lagertha (Vikings).
Shows with the most nominations that did not get into the contest: Sense8, Orange is the New Black, Black Sails, Friends, Lost Girl, American Horror Story, Chicago PD, Jane the Virgin, Justified, Battlestar Galactica, Breaking Bad, Glee, The Last Ship, Brooklyn 99, Chicago Fire, Dominion, The Fall, Firefly, The Fosters, Galavant, The Good Wife, Gossip Girl, La Femme Nikita, The Middle, New Girl, Stargate SG-1, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Polls will close at approximately 1:00 pm CST on Monday.
ReplyDeletePlease make sure you read all the rules. They were read and approved by Andy, the site owner, so if you have any concerns, please take them up with him.
Also thanks so much to everyone who found pictures for this contest. Without you, we would not have pictures for this round. I know everyone appreciates your hard work to enhance this round. You rock!
Other than that, thanks for participating and have a great contest.
It's a mix of easy and hard for me today, like first rounds usually are.
ReplyDelete1. Sydney - While I have only seen a few episodes of Alias, I was impressed by how Sydney took a tragedy (her boyfriend's murder) and used it to try to combat an evil embedded into her life. Plus she's the millennium's answer to Buffy. Even if she's going to lose, she's an easy pick for me today because Root was the reason I dropped Person of Interest.
2. Liv - This one was harder because I like both characters. Liv is one of my favorite new characters. I love how her character changes with each brain she eats, but I also love how she uses her new condition to help the police solve cases. She's a very resilient character. Olivia is also resilient and resourceful, but she wasn't even close to my favorite character on Fringe. If this had been between Liv and Walter or even Liv and Alt-Olivia, my vote would be different.
3. Matt - I've only watched one episode of Daredevil and 2 episodes of The Originals, so this is pretty much a "voted my bracket" thing. I did really like the Daredevil pilot though so I look forward to watching more.
4. ??? - This is the toughest one for me yet because I don't watch Grey's Anatomy and Cookie wavers between my cheering for her and driving me absolutely insane. I'm going to need to think this one over some more.
5. Athos -Although I thought season 1 of Scandal was addicting, I never cared much for Olivia Pope and her adulterous affair with PotUS. On the other hand, I love Athos. He's taciturn but snarky, depressed but quick with a sword to defend his friends, and he always lives by his code of honor. While Porthos might have gotten the best character development this season, Athos is always a scene stealer.
6. The Doctor I really loved the 10th Doctor. David Tennant was awesome. Plus I have never seen Bates Motel, although I do have the season 1 DVD waiting for when I have the time.
7. Jane - In the battle of the TV cops, I'm going with the one that romance is not a huge part of. I like Jane's no-nonsense approach, her love for her friends and family, and the fact that she'd never be caught dead wearing heels on the job if she could help it. She doesn't like heels, period. Too hard to chase criminals that way. I think Kate Beckett is a decent character but the show got bogged down with her relationship with Castle and I dropped it. Plus the side characters were always my favorites on Castle.
8. Donna - Most people here know that I am not a fan of anti-heroes and Sherlock falls completely in that category for me. I find him too obnoxious to take. Donna, however, is one of 2 characters I liked on Suits. She was snarky, loyal, and smart. That's enough for her to get my vote today.
Woo hoo! The TV Talk Topics begin, always my favorite part of this contest. I can't wait to hear all of your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteCharacters: To my surprise, there are several characters on here that I have never seen. However 2 stick out for me. Lagertha may be the most kick butt woman on TV, and I say this knowing that the number of kick butt women has been growing steadily. (Yeah, Hollywood on that!) What makes Lagertha even more special is that she is a woman warrior in a man's world and yet her Viking husband respects her skills so much that he asks her to join a make-it-or-break-it raid with him. Here's a woman who can hold down the hearth and defend the homeland. She's an impressive character in her own right but in a historical piece like this she's a rare find. Michael Samuelle is more a nostalgic favorite for me. I came into La Femme Nikita late when it was already in re-runs in the States. Nikita quickly grabbed my attention as another kick butt female but in the end, it was Michael's story that grabbed my attention more. Just when I thought I was finally starting to understand the character, another layer was peeled back making him a mystery again.
Shows: A lot of great shows ended up splitting their nominations between several characters, which made them heavily nominated and yet not in the contest. Here's hoping they find a place next year. On the list, I plan on watching Battlestar Galactica, The Fall, and The Middle when I can. They have all moved up the to-watch list based on Pitch Your Show and other recommendations. Dominion I enjoyed last year but I missed the premiere so I need to get caught up, hopefully by the end of the week. I love live tweeting it. Stargate SG -1 was one of my family's favorite shows and someday I will introduce it to our newest generation. I hope they like it as much as we did. That leaves The Last Ship, which was my favorite new show last summer, and Galavant, my most shocking and delighted renewal. The Last Ship keeps my attention like few other shows do because the pacing is phenomenal. I also like having a show back that doesn't spend most of its time in the grey. Don't get me wrong. I like my grey area shows like The 100 too, but sometimes it's nice to have a show where you know the good guys and the bad guys and they don't mix in the middle. I'm still 2 episodes behind but it's at the top of my to-watch list. Galavant is pure fun. I laughed so much during the songs that I bought the soundtrack and I play them on loop after particularly frustrating days. King Richard was the funniest male character to come out of 2015 and I haven't even seen the new comedies.
While I could talk about those shows all day, I wanted to highlight one character and show I nominated but didn't get in. Parker from Leverage has the best character development I have ever seen and on that alone I nominated her. She's not my favorite female character, that would be Fiona Glenanne from Burn Notice, but she is next. What I first liked about Parker is that she was so capable at her job but her social skills were so off and she was so unpredictable that you never knew what she was going to say and do next. That alone can only last so long or else it gets old fast, like Sheldon Cooper who was basically the same character for 7 years with very little character development. Parker instead, under Sophie's tutelage, slowly learns how to function as part of a team until she is the natural person to take over that team. To watch her evolve from the pilot to the series finale was a great treat. Plus Parker, Eliot, and Hardison made up my favorite TV trio possibly of all time. Their snarky humor and skills that enhanced each other make Leverage one of my most missed shows. It is a procedural but the characters are so much fun. All 5 seasons are available on Netflix and it's the show that I will be spotlighting in Throwback Thursday in a couple of weeks
Today I pick Olivia Dunham, Matt Murdock and Olivia Pope.
ReplyDeleteThere were plenty characters I didn't know about, so I think the following rounds will be more interesting for me.

ReplyDeleteLiv Moore, Olivia Pope, and Derek Shepherd for me today. Thanks, Dahne, for doing this!
ReplyDeleteThere are only 2 characters I care about in the whole poll and they meet in the 1st round?!!!! Not fair! I love Sydney and I would vote for her any other time, but I can't vote against Root...
ReplyDeleteI think the Cookie vs. Derek poll is going to be very interesting. I was wondering if he would get a bump in the poll because of how it ended. It did pop him over some other characters in the nominations so we'll see.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Donna and I thoght "Well, Sherlock's gonna win it anyway" and BAM, 49x51. It's really neck and neck.
ReplyDeleteMatt,Norma & Beckett for me today.
ReplyDeleteI mean in % not votes.
ReplyDeleteOlivia took the lead vs Athos, that was the only turnover as I know, except Donna vs Sherlock tough battle, all others have have a big difference
