2015 Character Cup - Nominating Polls - Part A

Jul 7, 2015

Policy Poll  - The nominations are in and now it's time to start preparing for our contest in earnest. Since we've never done nominating polls before, we have to set some guidelines. Normally I would just choose a plan and apply it to all characters but I don't want to be accused of stacking the rankings so we're putting it to a poll. Basically every character has been put in a numbered list based on the number of nominations they received. Usually that list determines where they are placed on the bracket. However this time you choose which character represents the show, making the list more fluid. One character might be third on the list while competing against another that is fifth on the list. While in most polls whichever character got the most nominations will also win the poll, the question becomes what happens if a lower ranked character beats a higher ranked one in the nominating poll. We have 2 choices. 1. The winning character continues to be placed on the list according to how many nominations they got. I will then just delete any characters that did not win from the list and everyone will move up accordingly. 2. The winning character gets substituted into the higher character's place. This makes the rankings more about the show than an individual character. Let me know in the comments below if you would like more clarification.

Finalist Poll - Along with policy polls, we also need to pick the final characters that will get into the contest. That's the second poll. The top 3 characters in that poll will proceed to the contest while the others will not make it in this year. If both characters from Sense8 are in the top 3, the one with the most votes will get into the contest, not both. This poll will last 24 hours and you can vote for 2 characters.

Nominating Polls - The remainder of the polls today are nominating polls.  Remember this will determine which character represents a show in the contest.  Not all shows will have nominating polls but since we have many more than I expected, it will take 3 days to do them all.  Characters in the nominating polls had to meet the following criteria:

1. They had to have at least 5 nominations.
2. They had to be within 5 nominations of the most nominated character on that show unless they got over 20 nominations.
3. If 2 or more characters got over 20 votes, they went in the nominating poll regardless of the difference between them.

Nuts and Bolts - With the exception of the second poll, all are 1 vote only. Polls will close roughly 24 hours after they start. There is no option to change your vote so please choose carefully. As with all SpoilerTV polls, it is 1 vote per IP address so trying to vote multiple times will not count.

If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments.  Since this is new, I know it is bound to be confusing at first.

  1. These polls will close at 7:30 pm CST on Tuesday.

If you have questions, let me know. I know the first time doing anything is always confusing. Just a reminder that not all shows with have nominating polls so just because you don't see them, doesn't mean your character will not be in.

Once characters and brackets are finalized, we will start the prediction contest. More info will follow on that later. We will also start collecting pictures for candidates to put in the polls starting in round 2.

  2. ok it is today was starting to wonder lol

  3. So excited for this! Thank you Dahne!!

  4. Just voting for Ollie as I don't watch the other shows. Felicity is an okay character and has been since S1, but I don't know how Felicity gets so much praise as if she's the main character on Arrow, lol.

Although I'm just starting to watch Banshee at the moment. I hope I like it.

  5. I'm excited too. We should have another day of nominating polls and then one day of nominating/ranking polls before the brackets are revealed and people who want to participate in the prediction contest can start making their best guesses. My hope is to have the actual contest begin on Sunday.

  6. Banshee is starting to get a folllowing here at SpoilerTV. I hope you enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I hope so too. I've been starting to check out Banshee and Strike Back. Would be nice to expand the television that I mostly watch.

I voted for this option: "The winning character continues to be placed on the list according to how many nominations they got. I will then just delete any characters that did not win from the list and everyone will move up accordingly."

    4. N/A
    5. Vincent Keller
    6. Rick Castle
    7. Joan Watson

  9. Well, I chose Sydney Bristow and Wolfgang first, and in the nominating polls, Job (yay!) and Coulson.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Why do they list characters that are shipped against each other. Like Arrow and BatB. That's not right. Not voting

    ReplyDelete
  11. Voted for Wolfgang and Ward. Wolfgang is definitely a favourite of mine so I'm really rooting for him. Thanks for doing this Dahne, I'm looking forward to seeing which characters make it and especially looking forward to the TV talk topics :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Because those are the characters with the most nominations and thus fit the criteria to be in the nominating polls. The nominating polls are to determine which character that show's fandom wants to represent them since only 1 character can get in for each show. It makes sense that the main male lead and the main female lead would have the most nominations.

    ReplyDelete
  13. First poll: Sydney & Wolfgang
    Banshee: Job

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sidney, Ichabod, Ward and Oliver for me.

    ReplyDelete
  15. For many the nominating polls will likely be the hardest decision they make after nominating, since they are essentially choosing between two favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks for participating. I'm combining, expanding, and narrowing out TV Topics this week. I think they will offer a wealth of range for people to discuss and I can't wait to get started.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I voted for:
    1. Wolfgang and Alex Vause
    2. Skye
    3. Felicity

    7. Sherlock

    Finger crossed for Wolfie! =D
Thank you Dahne, this is going to be epic!

    Sydney Bristow - Alias
    Icabod Crane - Sleepy Hollow

  20. Jethro and Job for me. N/A to the rest. I feel a big sense of relief that we've started. This is going to be fun. JobFTW.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I absolutely love them both. I hope you enjoy them. SB is a fun filled adrenaline rush that will hit you with emotions when you least expect.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Because she is one of the main characters along with Oliver, Diggle and Laurel.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm excited too. I think it will be a fun way to pass hiatus.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ichabod Crane, Skye/Daisy, Oliver Queen, Kate Beckett and Joan Watson

    ReplyDelete
  25. That....doesn't tell me anything. Why doesn't Diggle or Laurel get acknowledged then?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I voted:
    - Keep the order.
    - Gibbs & Alex
    - Skye
    - Oliver
    - Job
    - Vincent Keller
    - Beckett
    - Sherlock

    ReplyDelete
  27. They (Laurel n Diggle) do just not on this site. It's just how it is. This site is certain characters friendly. This place actually reminds me a lot of the CW lounge when there was a CW lounge n that place was full of a certain demographics. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  28. A Banshee Poll...Yay! Voted for Job.

Voted for Sydney and Wolfgang in the first poll. I dropped all the other shows, so I did´t vote in them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oliver queen and skye!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sydney Bristow, and only voted on the Elementary poll for Sherlock - don't watch any of the other shows.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Kate Beckett and Sherlock Holmes ftw!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Missed the nomination stage (I just couldn't decide who to nominate) but I'll be here for the rest!!
Voted peralta and Gibbs for the first one as they were the only two shows I watch.
The two characters I wanted to see in the shield poll (Mae and fitz) didn't make it so went with ward.
For arrow, I'll be honest, I hated this last season. But I hated felicity less than I hated Oliver (and I liked her cameos on the flash) so I voted for her.
Don't watch any of the other shows in today's polls
Can't wait for the comp to start!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. The easy part came finally :D
For the first poll - Wolfgang (he was one of my nominations) and Alex! For AoS, I went with Grant Ward, since my other favourites didn't make it. And the rest:
    Arrow - Oliver
Banshee - Job! I really loved Siobhan, but c'mon Job is the best!
BatB - Vincent was less annoying in season 1, so him.
    Castle - n/a
    Elementary - Watson.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sydney Bristow and Phil Coulson. I can't believe Skye and Ward made it to the AoS nominations but Fitz and May didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  35. - Jake Peralta (B99) and Ichabod Crane (Sleepy Hollow) on the first one. Really wish Jake would move on although really doesn't look like it
    - I am shocked that May was not only the outright winner of the MAOS nominations but that she wasn't even in the top 3. At least I feel better for not wasting my votes on Fitz; as much as I would have loved if he got in, I think he had no shot looking at this. Anyway, it is between Skye or Ward for me. I like Coulson but not nearly as much. Voted for Skye for the amazing arc she had in Season 2, even if I think the show would go further in the competition with Coulson which is less polemic
    - I like Felicity and at times I even love her but Oliver Queen all the way
    - Nothing
    - Nothing
    - I no longer watch Castle but I still think Kate Beckett is an amazing character and I truly adore Stana Katic so I voted for her
    - Nothing

    ReplyDelete
  36. I never thought Coulson would get in before May, I am very surprised. But I think AOS is probably the fandom in which there is less consensus about favorites. I've literally seen every character's name thrown around as a favorite at one time or the other, so I guess we really shouldn't be surprised. I give you my list and I am already sure your will be radically different for instance!

    1. Fitz
    2. Skye
    3. Bobbie/ Ward/ Hunter
    6. May/ Coulson/ Simmons

    9. Mac

    ReplyDelete
  37. Voted for Sydney Bristow, Coulson, Beckett and Watson.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is true, but the good thing about two favorites facing off for the nomination is that you win even if you lose. In the Arrow, Beauty and the Beast, Castle, and Elementary polls my two favorite characters are vying for the nomination. I just had to choose which one of my two favorites that I like more, and that was relatively easy except for Arrow because I like Felicity and Oliver almost equally.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah, like I told you once I think Skye is very popular but because her dislikers are quite vocal about it (given her big role on the show), it seems like she's not as well-liked as, say, Fitz, Simmons or May. But that's obviously not the case. And even Ward, as divisive as he is (the people who like him are crazy about him, the people who don't hate his guts with a passion, and not many are in between), managed to get in...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah i always find it intriguing how some of the characters that people often have as number 1 or number 2 are disliked by so many others. As a result, if you do a vote in which you ask for a favorite you get one result and if you do a ranking of all characters you get a drastically different result.

(BTW, sorry if the conversation is repetitive then, it is hard to keep track lol)

    ReplyDelete
  41. For the remaing spots I voted for Sydney Bristow and Jake Peralta.

    AOS: Voted for Skye.

    Elementary: Voted for Joan

    ReplyDelete
  42. No, it's fine! I happily repeat things all the time, LOL.

By the way, my list would be:

    1. Fitz/May
    2. Coulson
    3. Simmons/Hunter
    4. Bobbi
    5. Mack/Skye
    6. Ward (like I've said before, my response to his character is admittedly a bit more emotional than rational, I think I would like him more if I wasn't familiar with his fanbase - well, some of it - even though it has nothing to do with the actual writing on the show)

Not ranking Lincoln yet because we barely know anything about him, he's been pretty bland and "meh" so far but I like Luke Mitchell and hope the character is developed further next season.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jane,Ichabod,Coulson,Felicity,Job,Catherine,Kate Beckett,Sherlock for me today.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yeah like I said, pretty different lists all around ahah, not unexpected. I think it is probably a testament to the show that they've managed to create such a group of characters that resonates with different people in different ways, I think it is good. I am surprised you have Fitz sharing the top spot with May, I thought she was your indisputable #1 for some reason. The Ward conversation we've had it before I believe. I really enjoy the character. Note that it is "as a character" and not "as a person"; sometimes I can't make it past this distinction but here I think it is easy because the show acknowledges the difference itself. As a character, I find him delightful and compelling to watch. Obviously if we were to do a "person" rank he would have the bottom place.

I've enjoyed what we saw of Lincoln this year and I was happy with the promotion, but like you I left him out of the ranking because I feel like I haven't seen enough yet.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I voted for:
"Keep the order based on the number of nominations the winning character received."

    1. N/A (I don't care who's going to win this poll, because I'm not a fan of one of these shows)
    2. N/A
    3. Felicity Smoak
    4. N/A
    5. N/A
    6. Kate Beckett
    7. Sherlock Holmes

Not much to vote for, but I'm very excited for the upcoming polls!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wolfgang Bogdanow! He might not be well-known but he is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wow, this is a lot more complicated than I thought, now I am certain I would be unable to organize a cup of any kind. Maths is not my friend.
As far as characters are concerned, I hope Jake Peralta stays in the race, he's awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  48. May was my indisputable fav in S1, but Fitz became so amazing in S2 that I can't choose between them. Heck, even Coulson is a very close third. I actually nominated him, not Fitz, as my AoS male character; I guess I feel like he should "represent" the show. ☺

That's a very good point you make about Ward. Where AoS succeeds with this type of character, and many shows like TVD or OUaT fail, is that they call a spade a spade. They're honest about the nature of the character and the things he's done. Making him a Hydra agent was a brilliant creative choice, but one that had major consequences and I give the writers a lot of respect for not shying away from them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sense8 deserves a bit of love!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wait...is Peggy not nominated? How is that possible?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Gibbs and Wolfgang. in others polls: Coulson, Oliver.

    ReplyDelete
  52. "Just a reminder that not all shows will have nominating polls so just because you don't see them, doesn't mean your character will not be in."

So I think she's nominated, but we have to wait to find out :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. ????....not sure I get this system....*scans the page again*....mmm....does this mean that there is already a list of nomination and those are for the "last spots"? Or is this about not having more than one character per show?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I am kind of surprised that skye gets so many votes....I would have thought that Fitz and May are the most popular characters in the show other than Coulson.

    ReplyDelete
  55. May and Fitz are definitely my 2 favourite AOS characters but I've grown to really love Skye. She would probably be my third choice. I think Chloe has done a wonderful job since the end of S1 and throughout S2 and having Skye's story become this superhero origin is really cool.

I know some dislike the focus Skye has had but you can't please everyone, for most of S1 people were complaining about not having known comic characters on the show or any of the main cast having powers. So the series gives us Skye as an established character from the comics and gives her powers and still people aren't happy.

    ReplyDelete
  56. This one is complicated because of the nominating polls. Otherwise we would finish the 4 polls needed to fill the brackets and be ready to start predicting today. Last year people were iffy about only having 1 character from a show in the contest instead of being able to have lots of characters in the contest from teh same show. The nominating polls were the compromise. We are trying it out this time around for the first time to see how people like them. I'm sure we will tweak the process again for next year. Already for next year, people will only be able to nominate 1 person for a show.

    ReplyDelete
  57. There is a list based on how many nominations each charcter got. There are 61 different shows represented on the list so the second poll is to determine what 3 other shows will have characters in the poll. All 3 will end up going against the most nominated characters, which means that they will likely only stay in it for the first round.

The nominating polls are so people feel like they have a chance to choose who will represent their favorite shows. In many cases, shows already have a character who was far more popular than others. With Agent Carter for instance, Peggy Carter got 37 of the show's 42 nominations. It wasn't even close, so she's in automatically. In Arrow though, the 2 characters were within 6 nominations of each other and both well above 20 nominations. Now last year, that would have meant that the one with the most nominations would be in. It made it a lot simpler, but last year people asked for more control over which characters got into the contest so the nominating polls were born. They allow fans to choose between a show's most popular characters to pick their champion. Most people will go with their gut. Other fandoms will go with strategy. Either way, it gives the fans of a show the final say on who will be in the Character Cup.

Since this is a new plan, we will evaluate it at the end of the contest like we did last year. If people like this system, we will probably keep it. If people do not, then we will change it up again. This contest is largely fluid because the polls are not the focus, the discussion is so we can keep tinkering with the nomination process until we have something that everyone can live with.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm glad you are excited. I am too. The nominating polls will be very hit and miss in popularity given the nature of the beast. However, when the actual contest starts, we will start the TV Talk Topics so even if you don't have a character in the polls that day, you can still participate.

    ReplyDelete
  59. For SHIELD, the issue became how spread out the nominations were. No one got a whole lot of nominations because there were 9 characters who were nominated. SHIELD suffers from a relatively large cast where everyone has a chance to shine at some time. While that makes for better TV, it also makes for split nominating and voting.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ha! Nominating is tough for this one. So glad you're joining us again.

    ReplyDelete
  61. It is a win-win situation most of the time, so I think the majority of people are happy with the nominating poll concept, even if it is confusing.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yikes! The Banshee characters are tied. That will never do. Banshee fans, please spread the word for your favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Oh my heart can't take it. I tweeted it. I love/loved them both but Job is just a force all on his own.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Job would have a tizzy if he knew he was tied with Carrie!
Then again, I guess it's better than it would be if he were tied with Sugar! XD

    ReplyDelete
  65. Wait a minute. Are Siobhan and Carrie the same character? I could have sworn I looked that up on IMDb to make sure. Face palm. Sorry about that. It doesn't change the nominating poll at all but it does mean the 2 characters were closer in nominations than I thought.

    ReplyDelete
  66. If it does end up being a tie, the winner will be the one with the most nominations because that just seems fair.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The more I saw of this character the more I loved him, he was my favourite by the end.

    ReplyDelete
  68. No, they are different characters

    ReplyDelete
  69. No they are not XD
My bad... For some reason I wrote Carrie after reading Siobian - not sure why.. I will blame it on not having coffee yet!!!! XD

    ReplyDelete
  70. I guess the April Carver nomination didn't stick huh. That stinks

    ReplyDelete
  71. Whew! I was having Daenerys / Khaleesi flashbacks there. I completely understand the still sleepy part of your morning. I'm there too.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ah, thank you. This makes sense...I guess the additional polls are a good idea because it is so easy to miss the nomination phase.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ugh!
I will never understand why some people refer to Daenerys by one of her titles like it is a proper name! Although I can easily understand why that would be confusing for a person who does not watch the series! XD

    ReplyDelete
  74. Last year if someone had asked me to choose a favourite on Arrow, I don't think I would've been able to. I loved Oliver, Diggle and Felicity equally. I still love them with all my heart, but after season 3 Oliver skyrockted to the top. Life just kept knocking him down. Granted that some of the stuff that happened to him were due to some ill advised decisions he made, but man did he break my heart every week. This season made me feel very protective of him. I guess the point of this long rant is that I chose Oliver Queen. Sorry, Felicity, you are still my baby girl.

    Other polls:
Keep the order based on the number of nominations the winning character received.
    Jane Villaneuva
    Jane Villaneuva
    Phill Coulson.
    Vincent Keller.
    Rick Castle. (Sorry Beckett)
    Sherlock Holes.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Not every show will have a nominating poll because not every show needed one. For instance, April was the only character nominated for Chasing Life so there couldn't be a nominating poll even if we wanted one. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  76. There are so many characters on Game of Thrones, I figure it has to be hard to keep them all straight when they only have 1 name people call them.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Next year people will only be able to nominate 1 person per show so the nominating polls allow those who really wanted to nominate 2 people to have a final choice in the matter. In the end, it usually changes nothing because the characters with the most nominations are usually the characters that win the polls but there are cases when it could make a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  78. You know, it will be interesting to see how well Peggy does after Agent Carter was such a surprise in the last competition. Since hers is not an ensemble show, the fanbase should stand firmly behind her.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Who did get the most nominations, out of interest? Hopefully it was Job.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think I read somewhere that we are down to around 130 named and living characters on Game of Thrones. So that's not too bad compared to the ASOIAF books where there are over 2,000 characters mentioned! XD

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'll tell you after the poll closes. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  82. I am very interested as well because I did not expect her to go far until teh episode contest surprise. Now with all the news coming out about casting, there's even more interest in the show here so hopefully that will inspire her fans to participate more.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Went for Gibbs in the finalist poll, then went with Coulson, Oliver, Job (!!!!!!!!!) and Sherlock.

Seriously, I'm gonna be really upset if Job doesn't get in. I love Siobhan but Job is just amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yeah...I thought Snafu would go out against The Flash and then it looked like it would loose against The 100. I think nobody expected fourth place for a show which was that close to cancellation.
You know, I won't bet money on her winning the whole thing, but I have the feeling that she might outlast all the other Comic book show characters.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I went with Oliver, Job and Sherlock. The vote is so close between Job and Siobhan :o

    ReplyDelete
  86. I think it's because she's one of the few character's whose moral compass was more or less on the straight and narrow compared to others on the show. She also had a massive year this season - without spoiling those on the site who are still catching up - which may be having an effect too?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yeah, agreed. Still, it's Job. Job rules all.

    ReplyDelete
  88. It's because Jorah calls her that all the time I think, it muddles things up in some people's minds, especially if they are only a more casual fan of the show. Mind you, I have seen it done as a way to troll other fans online too, to wind them up as part of bigger game they are playing :(

    ReplyDelete
  89. I have no horse in this race since I have never seen the show, but if for some reason he doesn't, there's always next year. That's my basic mantra in all of these contests.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 2,000 would be a little hard to keep straight. Hope there's Cliff's Notes. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Are you going to put me out of my Poldark misery and let us know if someone from the show got through at all? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  92. There's no way she will win the whole thing, but she maybe the last female character left standing depending on who wins the nominating polls. There are 4 females (3 of which still left to be decided in nominating polls) that could very well take her down. It will be interesting to see where the brackets fall after the initial poll results are completed.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Only 10-12 spoilers per day and I already gave those out in the second set of nominating polls. You'll have to check back tomorrow. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Lol, you're a tease!! :p (and I love ya for it ;) )

    ReplyDelete
  95. Roy was my favourite character on Arrow, and I like Merlyn a lot too.

Awesome to hear that you're going to start Banshee, I hope you like it too :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. Yeah I guess I realize that, but I hated it when Jorah did it as well! XD
It just sounds so, so odd to me without "The" or My" in front of the title....

When the show first started I loved the GOT fandom, but the last few years it's gotten more and more annoying to me. So many feuds and arguments between show lovers and book lovers. As if the two are mutually exclusive... I find it all so annoying and a bit depressing...

It was bad enough when it was just book fans who hated the most recent two books versus those that thought the books were good. Now this... Ugh!

  97. Appendices in each book, add in the official supplemental books, the fan articles, e-books, essays, and encyclopedia sites devoted to explaining the world of A Song of Ice and Fire.... And it still can get confusing at times! XD

  98. Not too may I voted for in here.
The only one I feel strongly about is Sherlock.

  99. Colton Haynes got better in the role as Roy Harper during S3 for sure. I liked his progression just as an actor.

  100. My, goodness I should have realized this was going to be hard, all my nominated couples are head to head, why why, I'm torn, went with Vincent Keller, Rick Castle, and Felicity, a shot to the heart, but for the sake of sanity they're still in it cause it's the same show, Dahne you were right cause it basically cancels out the other character, dang it!!!!!

  101. Ugh, it literally pains my soul to see Sydney losing!

  102. Yeah, that's the bad part of nominating polls. A vote for one is a vote against the other. For many people this will be the hardest part of the contest.

  103. The top 3 will advance to the contest, which is the good news. The bad news is that in her current position, Sydney will go against the #1 ranked character on the first day. Realistically, neither she nor anyone who wins this poll will be in it for long because they will be ranked at the very bottom.

  104. Oh, I thought it was only the top 2! It's a longshot, anyway, I know. It's been 9 years since the show ended so Alias is considered pretty "old" by now, but it never will be to me.

  105. I love when characters from older shows get in. To me it is a bigger tribute to those characters to even get in than it is for current characters to do well. A character from a long cancelled show who gets in obviously has staying power and continues to be a fan favorite. That says a lot.

  106. At least it should get better. Just keep telling yourself that the hardest part is almost over. :-)
