Five episodes in, ABC next week will likely have to make a renewal decision on its new drama series The Whispers, which has shown promise in the early going, especially in DVR viewing.
The network has found itself in that predicament because of how The Whispers came about. The drama was originally picked up abclogoto series in May 2014 for a midseason launch, with standard cast options until June 30 2015. That normally gives networks plenty of time to make decisions on fall and midseason series. But in the case of The Whispers, the horror-tinged drama was pushed to a summer run and premiered on June 1. I hear there has been an effort on part of ABC and producing studio ABC Studios to get a short, two-week option extension on the actors until July 15, but that doesn’t seem to be panning out, at least for now. That would make next Tuesday, the day after Episode 5 airs, the deadline to make a decision on Season 2.
I hear ABC brass have been happy with The Whispers‘ performance so far, and sources are cautiously optimistic about a potential renewal. The genre series premiered with a 1.5 adults Live+same day rating among adults 18-49 and 5.7 million viewers in the Monday 10 PM hour to become the network’s highest-rated summer scripted premiere since Rookie Blue in 2010. With a strong delayed viewing, The Whispers‘ premiere result shot up +53% in Live+3 to a 2.3, becoming the highest-rated L+3 summer debut on any network in 2 years – since CBS’ Under The Dome in 2013. While The Whispers‘ Live+same day ratings have dipped after the solid debut, they have been consistent: 1.0. 0.9, 1.0, and the portion of DVR viewing has increased. On average in the Live + 3 data, The Whispers grows 64% over L+SD in 18-49. The new drama also adds another 2.0 million total viewers, drawing an average audience of 6.6 million viewers in L3.

I really doubt that ABC is cautiously optimistic about a series that has already gone below a 1.0. This just seems like spin, which should be beyond Deadline.

ReplyDeleteWell ABC needs some summer scripted shows on their schedule and this while this is not a great performer it does OK and its their production after all so why not keep it?
ReplyDeleteNo according to wikipedia It was expected to premiere on July 24, 2014 but was pushed to spring 2015 to undergo changes so it wasnt supposed to air this summer, in fact it was pushed twice.

ReplyDeleteYeah i watched the Pilot and really liked it. I have not had time to watch the other episodes yet because i am so busy. The last time I watched TV was exactly two weeks ago. Lol! I have so much piled up for when it all calms down
ReplyDeleteI say ABC should give it a 2nd season and end it big since it will get tedious after that. Honestly, I think they could've done better to treat this as a summer horror anthology series for network TV. I think it could've found a niche like that.
ReplyDeleteI think that format doesn't matter in programming, especially summer programming where expectations are lower. The purpose of summer programming in general is to get as many viewers watching to promote their fall lineup and it shouldn't matter what format it is, as long as it is watched. Reality, sports, unscripted etc, the top performers should proceed. ABC doesn't need scripted performers, it would be nice to have them, but they need performers. Same thing with all other networks.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, there really doesn't seem any benefit to picking The Whispers as their scripted holdover. Currently it has a great lead in The Bachlorette and is getting beaten by The Island, a cheaper reality show. It's a genre show, so it won't likely syndicate well. It won't repeat well. And there's not enough of a live viewership based formed to indicate that it will be watched live if it returns. That's why I question ABC being "cautiously optimistic" as there appears to be no benefit to continuing this show.

ReplyDeleteI really hope they renew it. I've just seen the 4th episode and it had quite a "Fringe" vibe to it (in a good way). I loved the twists, the pacing was excellent, and despite the fact that it was merely the 4th episode, it felt a lot like a season finale!

ReplyDeleteI have never watched PLL and it does not look like my cup of tea but I hope you enjoy it. By the way, since you've liked AOS so much, I highly recommend you make room for Agent Carter before getting into a deep binge watch like PLL. Agent Carter is just 8 episodes so it is pretty easy and if you liked AOS you will like this too most likely. It is a great show and the lead is phenomenal.

ReplyDeleteWell in a way you're right, the creator isn't going to leave us hanging in the season finale, he said that he'll leave a window cracked for more stories but for the most part it's a conclusive first season.
