Season one ended in a bit of a cliffhanger.
Hank Steinberg: That’s an understatement. (Laughs)
Is it safe to say that the cliffhanger is resolved during the season premiere?
Steven Kane: Watching these guys get out of this mess is the fun of the season opener, and then after that ... really, it sets the tone for the whole rest of the season, because the season is really about home. Finding and making the cure turns out to have been the easy part. Getting the cure where it has to go and trying to do it in a world without civil authority or central authority, a world of panic and devastation, is a lot harder than just coming up with a cure. Season two really becomes an exploration of that part of the pandemic process, and it’s also a journey to America, because they stay on the ship, but they also travel a lot, especially through the south. There are a lot of echoes of post-Civil War America, too, where America was fractured, and we play on those themes as well as we go forward in season two.
Was it always the plan to enter season two with the cure in hand?
Steinberg: We didn’t want to have four seasons about trying to find the cure. (Laughs) When we came up with the premise of the show, we asked ourselves, “How long can we sustain the idea that they’re going to be looking for the cure?” We didn’t want to fall into the trap that some other serialized shows have, of trying to slow-play or long-play as part of the idea, and have the audience feel like they’re being made to wait too long to get into what they’ve been promised. The premise of the pilot was, “We’re gonna stay alive at sea ‘til we find the cure, and then we’re gonna go home.”
Kane: Finding the cure is really just the beginning. Then for Dr. Scott to find a way to get the cure to lots of people, for the ship and the captain to figure out how to get that cure to lots of people, that’s plenty of story to tell there.
Steinberg: Season two is going to ask, “What is home? What do we find when we go home?” The season is all about what America is when they get there, what the state of things is, and how they’re going to deal with it.

Season Finale Scores 2.1 HH Rating and 2.1 Total Viewers
Hallmark Channel’s original scripted series, When Calls the Heart, culminated a winning second season on Saturday night with the finale garnering a 2.1 HH rating and 2.1 million total viewers on a Live+3 basis. Additionally, the season 2 closer elevated Hallmark Channel to be the most watched network in the 8pm time period among HHs and total viewers.
In addition to tuning in, the show’s ardent fans, who call themselves “Hearties”, took to social media in record numbers making the finale the #1 Tweeted episodic series premiere during Saturday prime. Moreover, the episode generated the most social engagement and highest tweets (81,368) – 89% of which contained #Hearties – of any Hallmark Channel original series, movie, or special premiere in network history.
Over the course of its 8-week sophomore run, which kicked off on April 25th, the program averaged a 2.0 HH rating, as well as 1.7 households and 2 million total viewers, boosting Hallmark Channel to become the most-watched cable network on Saturday nights in the 8-9pm time period. The season’s premiere and encore telecasts combined also reached a total of 8.5 million unduplicated viewers.

How I Met Your Mother is still popular! The hit CBS sitcom has won its first International Audience Award for best comedy at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival. Interestingly, the recognition, bestowed annually at the top-rated globally drama, comedy and soap, came well over a year after the ensemble comedy ended its run on CBS, the first time the award has gone to a series that is no longer on the air. US fare extended its dominance in the audience awards categories, with NCIS repeating as most poplar drama series in the world for a second consecutive year. While crime procedurals have lost ground on American television to flashier, noisier serialized dramas, their worldwide supremacy continues. CBS crime dramas have won nine of the 10 years the award has been around with CSI (six times), NCIS (two times) and The Mentalist. Fox’s medical procedural House logged the remaining win. In comedy, HIMYM succeeds The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family, which won the last two years, following a 7-year streak for Desperate Housewives.
