Netflix has announced three principal cast members of its original series "The Crown," which is set in a post-World War II Britain, as the country rebuilds and shapes itself until Queen Elizabeth II's rule.

Claire Foy, who starred on NBC's "Crossbones" and BBC Two's "Wolf Hall," will play Queen Elizabeth II in the 10-episode series. She will be joined by former "Doctor Who" Time Lord Matt Smith as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, and "3rd Rock From the Sun's" John Lithgow as Sir Winston Churchill.

A release from Netflix about the series reads, "'The Crown' tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world -- Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street -- and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Two houses, two courts, one Crown."

This series wasn't on my radar but went right to the top of my most anticipated new series. Great cast plus period setting = awesome.

  4. What a strong cast. Just a shame that these politically-themed period pieces are almost always completely uninteresting to watch. Hopefully this will surprise me and make for a compelling watch.
