'WAGES OF SIN' REVIEW
I have so many feelings about this episode. Like seriously, I felt like the show just strapped me into one of the most emotional episodes of Salem ever. What I love about season two of this show is that it has explored so many of the characters and their humanity - even the ones that shouldn't have any left - and developed them to more fully-fleshed real-life characters. The feels in this episode were real and there is so much to talk about. I knew things would get emotional knowing Little John was kidnapped and that Mary was going to come face-to-face for the first time with John Alden but I didn't expect it to be this much of an emotionally-draining spectacle.
"Speak plainly or choke on my wrath - what have you done with my son?"
The issue of the Countess having Mary's son is addressed pretty quickly as Mary goes to check on John to wake him up, only to find the bed empty. I'm glad the Countess appeared to her straight away to tell her everything - where her son is and her intentions of what she's going to do to him - as I would have been a wreck seeing Mary search high and low for him in her worried state. I mean, even when she knew where he was, Mary was shaking. Janet Montgomery did a seriously wonderful job in this episode to show Mary's emotion and the lengths she would go through to save him. This episode solidified that Mary indeed has a warm heart despite having sold her soul to the devil. We knew she loved John Alden but the love for her son is overwhelming. I also loved how the scene between Mary and the Countess helped move the story forward and the Countess revealed to Mary of what her son was destined for. The Countess also called the big plan "The Working" so that's what the next stage of the Grand Rite is, and that Little John is the vessel for the Dark Lord, but he will need to be slaughtered for it to work. That sounds awful and the horror on Mary's face basically slaughtered my emotions. I also found it so interesting the way the Countess spoke about how much of an honour it is to have your son fill this role as she was going to do it herself, and she would have "given anything for that honour" but it wasn't meant to be. I really want to know why it didn't happen. It also shows how much better a mother Mary is compared to the Countess. The Countess is truly wicked, scaring Mary further that John is going to die whether Mary is at the Crags or not, as she will bathe him in the Hellblood or she will bathe in his blood.
My favourite parts of the episode were the scenes between Mary and Tituba. It was the confrontation we've been waiting for (as well as the Mary/John one) as we desperately needed both characters to let everything out as they both have so much building up inside of them - so much hate for each other. I felt so sorry for Tituba actually at the start when Mary was treating her horribly - "Now, for once, can you just do your job." But what Mary doesn't realise is that Tituba has been doing so much for Mary, she really has devoted her life to her so that remark cuts Tituba in half. The comment about Mary trusting Increase more than Tituba is also quite hurtful. Both have caused so much hurt on the other that it's really upsetting to me as a shipper of the Mary and Tituba friendship. The Countess really screwed things up for Tituba in a way by revealing to Mary the true purpose of John, revealing more of Tituba's secrets that she's kept from Mary, leading to the best scenes of the episode...
"Why did you deceive me for all those years?"
The confrontation. To be honest, I feel like now it's happened, both Mary and Tituba can move on from this and help each other, maybe work on building trust up again. I haven't seen a promo for the next episode (as it isn't on the website yet, damn you!) so I don't know what is going to happen next, but the scenes between Mary and Tituba were intense, to say the least. I love how calm they kind of start, both crying and I was surprised Mary didn't go for Tituba's throat sooner. But this was a very important scene for both characters. It offered so much more insight into the feelings of both characters and where they stand with one another. I feel that it also shows just how deeply they do actually care for one another as they are both devastated by the betrayals of the other. If Mary didn't care so much about her relationship with Tituba, she would have probably just dispatched of Tituba sooner, but she didn't. I loved the part where Tituba questioned their friendship when Mary said they were friends - "Was I, or was I never anything but your property?" It kind of shows just how much Tituba wanted to be more to Mary as equals, but it kind of never happened which has opened Mary's eyes. Also, when discussing selling Mary's son to the devil to give her the world, Tituba's explanation is quite understandable, as Mary really was just a child herself, but then Mary broke my heart when she said she would have still loved him as she does now. Ugh, this had me in tears at how intensely satisfying this all was. "If you just learn to harden your heart" Tituba said as her voice breaks because she is crying. It's funny how both these wicked witches are so emotional, revealing to each other the extent of their own humanity and their love that is buried beneath a wall of hatred.
"I keep asking myself how I could ever love you"
This all leads to a fight between the two which I kind of loved even though I wanted them to kiss and make up. Tituba pushes Mary to kill her then reveals John Alden is still alive. Another moment that truly blew this episode to new heights was the much-anticipated Mary and John reunion. I held my breath during this entire scene, loving every minute of it. It felt so real and raw with passion and hatred and just like Mary's and Tituba's confrontation but deeper. The line I quoted above that John says to Mary is such a harsh statement but we can understand why he would say it. He explains that she is 'the' witch that has caused so much death, and he is right. She is a despicable person for doing such bad things but we, as an audience, still love her because we get to see what the other characters don't really get to see - her struggles. What she really wants. But Mary lays it all down in this episode of what she truly wants. She doesn't want the world, she wants a heart, a heart that is capable of a happy ever after with the love of her life and their son.
"I have a son... we have a son?"
When Mary revealed to John that they had a son, I broke down. I truly broke down. He doesn't know what to say really, and later when she shows him Little John's room, it really starts to hit him. I loved that Mary relayed the story of Little John asking about his father and taking his name. It was one of the sweetest moments of the show and it seemed to persuade John into believing her. I liked that Mary explained what happened the night they were supposed to meet up to run away together, I felt that they both needed closure on that. It's also a revelation of Mary's character when she begs John to stop what she started in order to save their son. Mary would literally do anything for her child, even if he is a little crazy and demonic and extremely creepy at times, but she loves him deeply. She doesn't want the honour of welcoming the Dark Lord to the world - she just wants her son safe and sound. John asking Mary where his son was being kept was also a great moment. It showed that he did indeed want to save the son he just found out about and that the love from parents is more powerful than the evil that infects them. Both should want the other dead - Mary is a witch and John is a witch killer - but they love their son so much (and I'm sure they still love each other deeply) that they appear to overcome it just for their child.
"You'll burn in Hell, Wainwright!"
Oh God I'm tearing up so much writing this. Moving on swiftly, Cotton had a pretty big episode as the past caught up with him. I thought Hathorne would have been more of a dick at first but he was actually pretty reasonable with Cotton about the whole witch stuff Cotton was ranting about. I was shouting at the screen when Cotton started talking about what he saw at the Crags with Samuel as we all knew it was too late for Samuel to corroborate Cotton's story since he was seduced by Mary. I got pretty worried for Samuel when they started going to the Crags and we saw the dead birds, but then all was fine for him when the black pitch is nowhere to be seen. Poor Cotton is dragged away. I can understand from Hathorne's perspective if it's his job to get rid of Cotton, so at this point I think fair enough but don't you dare banish my Cotton or we will have problems, but then he mentioned to the driver of the carriage thing to make an attack look like an accident, and that he wants Cotton dead. That was when he became that demoralising dick we have all come to know and loathe. Karma will eventually bite you on the ass Hathorne, ya dick.
"Take my body, just give me back my son."
It was probably important to start the episode with the affection between Mary and Samuel. Samuel has accepted Mary for who she is and even agrees - though it pains him - to burn his work on the Plague. It broke his heart, you could tell, but he still did it. Side note, it was creepy when he burned the apple from the Grand Rite and it made the noises. Continuing on from the last episode when Sebastian witnessed Mary and Samuel in bed, we all theorised that Sebastian - being the jealous wicked witch he is - would do something to Samuel. Something bad. When he visited Mary and fixed the mirror, it was clear to see Mary's pain at this point. She begs him for the safety of her son, even going as far as saying the quote above about him taking her body. Again, it shows what Mary would do to get her son back and it's all the more heartbreaking. I loved the chatter between the two male characters, especially about the bed and how "that delight is apparently yours and yours alone." The telepathic talking between Sebastian and Mary was also wicked cool and from that moment, when Sebastian said Samuel was going to die, we knew he would succeed. Poor Samuel didn't stand a chance. I loved Samuel's enthusiasm and positivity despite the awful situations. He is so curious and optimistic and I would have loved to have seen more of this acceptance of witchcraft in order to discover more as he acts how I probably would if I was accepted into the fold. "I have so much to learn... I believe my very life has been leading to this moment." Sebastian and his false promises. I knew as soon as they reached the Crags Sebastian would push him in, and Cotton even alluded to it beforehand about him burning in Hell. I thought he'd disintegrate like lava but he sunk into it, Sebastian revealing he's the first person since Dante to enter Hell. Ugh, I feel so bad for Samuel. R.I.P.
"Having come this far, the price must be paid. I am so deeply sorry my child but it cannot be escaped or evaded. No gift without a curse, and he is the curse."
Anne Hale had a sort of minimal role in this episode as she only appeared in about two scenes and briefly at the end during the tolling of the bell, but she didn't need any extra scenes because Oh My God, her scenes were awesome and terrifying. First of all, it was fantastic to hear Xander Berkley's voice again as Magistrate Hale. I got chills. Then the show made me literally sh*t myself when the demon appeared in the mirror. It freaked me the f*ck out. I'm still shaking from it to be honest. I loved it though, and I loved her second appearance when she is practicing her talents with the help from her father from within the book. I loved the revelation that she can simply kill at a distance, and that she has power of life and death. So she can take away life, but can she also give it? Hmm. The line I quoted above too was so creepily delivered that my heart gradually dropped throughout. When she slowly turns the page to see the demon, I cowered under my covers like the scared little child I am. I freaked out when she was transported to the woods and chased by the demon. I didn't know what to expect when the demon was clawing at her clothes but I just knew I had already urinated a little. I loved how she screamed for Cotton who could sort of hear her. So close yet so far.
"Do not fear, little one. Your father and I are coming for you."
The end of the episode was complete perfection as it shows us that it's almost time for this war to truly kick off. Seeing the star in the sky was so chilling as literally everyone saw it. I thought that was cool that it went through everybody, which was probably to symbolise that this whole ordeal is going to affect every single life in Salem. Nobody is safe from what is to come, which was the perfect way to end the episode. We see that Anne is back in the attic and she looked awful, but at least she's not dead or badly mauled. We also see that Mary has tied Tituba up in John's place, as Mary watches John leave from the balcony. I love that unspoken moment between them as they agree to save their son. I also couldn't help but smile at Mary's vow to her son that she and his father are coming for him. Yes, Salem. Yes, yes, yes!
EPISODE VERDICT
Perfect episode in every single way possible. My love for 'Wages of Sin' knows no bounds. Almost everything I wanted to happen happened in this episode. The reunion between Mary and John was bewitching, the confrontation between Mary and Tituba was electrifying, and the progression of the main plot was chilling yet satisfying. I am so glad we are heading down this dark, dark path with only 4 episodes to go, showing us that Salem is not slowing down one little bit as we head towards the finale. So much was addressed and revealed as characters reached breaking point, though the only thing that still wasn't revealed was John's affliction. He looks fine so I guess the fact he isn't killing witches shows he isn't dying because of it, and I do want some answers from that but it appears we will be busy watching him and Mary team up to save Little John. I really hope Tituba will prove her loyalty to Mary by helping out, but I'm seriously not sure what to expect next with this show and that's what I love about it. Amazing episode and I cannot wait for the next one. At the same time, knowing there's only four episodes to go upsets me as this season has flown over. I'm not ready for no more Salem until next year (if the show is renewed and it bloody better be).
EPISODE AWARDS
Winner of Best Witch: Tituba |
Naughtiest Witch: Sebastian. Naughty Sebastian, condemning Samuel to Hell. Got to love his evilness though.
Best Gentleman: John Alden. He just learned of his son and puts his issues with Mary aside to help her save him. Father of the Year right there!
Best Spell: No spells were really cast during this episode, but Anne's practicing at the end was cool!
Best Line(s): "I have a son... we have a son" - John. "We do" - Mary. So much emotion going through me right now.
Most Bewitching Chemistry: This is a threesome award going to Tituba/Mary/John. The issues they all had with each other led to intense scenes.
Best Moment: From Mary's and Tituba's confrontation to John's and Mary's first seeing each other this season (discounting when John was invisible a few episodes back and he saw her).
Most Romantic Moment: Mary's and John's bonding over their son, especially when Mary was telling John about when their son asked about his father.
Creepiest Moment: When the Demon appeared in Anne's mirror. I had myself a heart attack.
Vilest Moment: Increase's maggoty head.
I seriously suggest checking out the WGN America website for Salem as it has some amazing content on it. The Writers' Wrap of 'Dead Birds' is on there with Adam Simon and it just holds so much insight in a little video of the last episode. No doubt there will be one for 'Wages of Sin' too so be sure to keep checking the website here.
What did you think of 'Wages of Sin'? Let me know your thoughts on the episode in the comments and be sure to watch the next new episode on June 7 on WGN America at 10PM!
I feel so silly for needing tissues during an episode of Salem, but it had to be done. Both emotional and terrifying, Wages of Sin was an extremely strong episode. What did you guys think of last night's Salem?
ReplyDeleteThis ep had so much in it. I just cannot except the doctor's death so easily. Not when they spent the entire season building up his character. It's just too quick and neat that he's gone that fast. I really hope Mary finds a way to bring him back at some point.
ReplyDeletePoor Anne. The price of being a witch is she has to submit to that daemon. I love all her scenes, she's really growing up.
I feel better that John knows the truth now. I hope he forgives Mary and I can't wait for him to meet his son.
I'm not sure where all this will end up, but it's an amazing ride. Great review :)
Thanks for reading :)
ReplyDeleteI think he might return when the gates to Hell open maybe? Seek revenge on Sebastian, come back changed and demented? It was pretty quick how he went. Anne really is growing up and becoming more stronger and independent, though I'm excited to see what happens next with her! I think John and Mary will make up by season's end and bond over their son. It's going to be an incredible journey to that finale, I'm sure :D
Seriously! the writers of this episode (who also wrote the best ep of Witches of East End!) know what they are doing. I absolutely loved this episode, so much drama and horror intertwined throughout. It was a thrilling ride for sure!
ReplyDeleteI loved the Mary/Tituba scenes in this episode too. I know I shouldn't but I did laugh a little at the fight, I love a good b*tch fight and the slaps were just so good. My heart seriously breaks for Tituba, all she wants is to be treated as an equal, after all she has done for Mary. I know shes lied to her and it was a big lie but Mary wouldn't have accomplished what she has, had she not done so. My heart is always with Mary and her struggles feel like the viewers' struggles I suppose for me, I feel like Mary is our guide through this show and everything she feels we feel. I just cannot express my love enough for her.
The Countess is just...gah! I can't. She's so deliciously evil I love it! Lucy Lawless is seriously just amazing, she is flawless (that kinda rhymed haha). I love her in villain roles because she has that evil smirk down so well and I seriously need her to not die this season, I feel like the show would deflate a little if she is defeated so soon unless they have another amazing villain lined up for a Season 3 (which we better be getting!). Sebastian is turning into a right little evil one, isn't he? Just when you think you haven't seen how evil he is, he goes and pushes poor Samuel literally into hell! I am dying to see where his infatuation with Mary is gonna take him, I think it'll lead to somewhere he's gonna regret and I cannot wait to see it all go down!
Anne...my favourite (I love Mary, I truly do, but Anne just is so sweet and loveable) unfortunately didn't have much to do this episode, as you said but what little she had, my my my they worked with it well didn't they? The creature/demon thing is creepy as ****. I think my heart may have stopped whenever he appeared and if I'm not mistaken, isn't he the same creature she saw in the woods last season after trying on her father's mask? Anyway, I am so invested in Anne and I hope it'll all payoff in the end with her storyline, I think she could maybe match the Countess in power at some point if she hones her skills well enough.
I'm an emotionless robot, so I wasn't quite as moved as you were, but this was a great episode.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I loved the Mary-Tituba scene and the Mary-John scene. Both confrontations were a long time coming. I loved Tituba finally voicing her own pain and sense of betrayal- I'd love for her to end up on Mary's side (and if we get a S3, maybe the writers can be nice to her and actually give her a love interest? I'm sure there's a nice witch who would appreciate Tituba) but I wouldn't trust Tituba not to try and go through with the ritual. If they stop it- since it seems like it's happening next episode or the following one- then maybe they could get Tituba back on their side, but until then? Everything that she's done so far has been for Mary, but it's also has been for their Dark Lord, so I can't trust her priorities.
The only thing I didn't get out of Mary-John was answers about his situation, but other than that, it was exactly what I wanted. Mary came clean about everything and the two will join forces to save their son and in the process might stop the ritual (someone other than me has to think about the people of Salem, a lot of them are innocent). I loved that things between them are still tense, but they'll put it aside to save their devil child. I think I can see a situation where Mary-Anne-John-Cotton all team up to try and stop the ritual from being completed and it's a team up I'd really like.
I'm not really surprised by Anne's horrible ordeal, since Mercy went through an initiation like that last season and I think we either saw Mary going through it or they hinted at it. I assume it's sealing the pact with the devil that all witches go through. I loved hearing Xander Berkley's voice and seeing Anne practicing her magic.
I kinda knew Samuel was a goner, he was 100% on board and he and Mary were happy, so there wasn't really any purpose to his character any more, but I still found the death a bit anti-climactic somehow. I did love Sebastian being a little shit and killing him, as predictable as that was. Like you, I was surprised at how reasonable Hathorne was when Cotton made his accusations, but then he set him up to die, so he went from his usual dick-self to a murderer, well done Hathorne, you're even worse than you were, if it's possible.
So do we think the ritual is next episode? I'm dying to see the promo. Do we want them to succeed or not? I thought I wanted them to succeed and bring the dark lord to earth, but now I don't want Mary and John to lose John Jr. and I kinda want the team up to work. So I'm a bit conflicted. I could still see John dying to save devil child, but I hope he doesn't, since the character still has a lot of potential.
I definitely think this was one of the best episodes of the season. It was so fast paced and covered a lot of ground both plot-wise and with character development. You're absolutely right about how powerful the scenes between Mary and Tituba/ Mary and John were. I don't know what it is, but there's just something about loving but unbalanced relationships that really gets to me. It's interesting to me that at the start of the series, John was the hero of the show and Mary was the enigmatic antagonist, but by this point it seems to have flipped, with Mary as the protagonist and John as kind of an antagonist if only because he opposes Mary. On a side note, I was kind of surprised by how fast Samuel jumped on board the witch train. It was a delightful surprise, but a surprise nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteCountess Marburg is a great villain and I can't wait to see what John and Mary have in store for her once they team up. I hope that Mary gets her son back, because seeing her as a mother added another softer dimension to her character and I wouldn't be able to stand watching her lose another person she loves.
One of my hopes for season 3 is that Cotton will become the fiery persecuting witch hunter he was in real life. His journey with his father and questioning his own sanity has been touching, but I'd like to see him really salt the earth like the promos lead us to believe he would. Overall though, season 2 has delivered on everything I hoped it would and mostly ironed out the few wrinkles of season 1 and developing and deepening even the characters I didn't care for at the beginning of the series.
WHAT.AN.EPISODE! Everything that happened was so good. The slow pace of the last one was a set up for the crazyness of this one.
ReplyDeleteLike you said, most confrontations were a long time coming. Tituba and Mary are those kind of friends that you hate with all your heart but smething draws each other and cant keep them appart for long, you know you ahve to be aware of said friend but at teh same time you want to trust them cause you believe there is hope in that friendship. I feel a little sad when Tituba was the one in the cell at the end. Poor Tituba.
John and Mary, I was expecting John to jump opn her but she knew how to elad that cionnversation and what tos ay to get to him, they both said what they felt and now they are working together for a greater good.
So long Wainwright! Finally Sebastian does something good but now i have a feeling that the Dr. will be the second one to leave hell as Dante did and now (theories time) I bet they will save Little devil and it will be our craz Dr Wainwright who si gonan come as satan himself.
the demon that Anne needs to keep happy is an scary beast. That mirror scenen scared me and elling for Cotton was really really heartbreaking and freaking Cotton couldnt hear her right, damn man! you were close to her.
And now she is really pwerfull, she can kill and give life as she wants. Go Anne Go!
The promo for next episode.

Haha yes Adam HUGE kudos to the incredible writers of this episode. They are just brilliant, and I totally agree with your assessment - so much drama and horror all incorporated to create a beautifully balanced episode.
ReplyDeleteWoohoo glad you also loved the Mary/Tituba fight, haha we shouldn't laugh but it was really good. It's very hard to put into words our love for Mary but yes, yes yes! Lucy's evil smirk has given me chills since we first watched her in Spartacus, I mean what an actress! I can imagine they'd have a season-long villain theme if the Countess is defeated by season's end, and I can imagine it being the Dark Lord that Mary is now trying to stop. Also going to be interesting to see what the hell Sebastian's deal is in the end and where they take him as he is still a big mystery to me.
I don't blame you for having Anne as your favourite (she got Best Witch in the last episode), but haha thanks for agreeing with my review about her. That creature/demon was a heartstopper for sure! He might be the same creature, I'm not entirely sure but it would be perfect if it was at it would be a great tie-in to that event in the first season, showing it's what they've always been building to. Gonna have to rewatch season 1 all over again now haha. I'm dying to see Anne truly unleash her powers again as she did in the season 1 finale but this time have total control.
Thanks for reading and leaving your thoughts Adam :D
You're not entirely a robot, I'm sure. I might have over-reacted because I do become emotional at the smallest things. I mean I was weeping at the end of the Muppets movie just because they raised enough funds in time to save the theatre. Tears of joy but still tears haha.
ReplyDeleteThat would be awesome if we had a love interest for Tituba. I don't think there has been any LGBT representation in the show yet and besides the little comment from Tituba a couple of episodes back, there hasn't really been anything else. The question of Tituba's loyalty and what she will ultimately do is one of the most interesting on the show right now, in my opinion. So complex. I feel like Tituba might end up wanting to help Mary and will do what it takes to earn her respect back - maybe Tituba will help Mary in the end and end up dying in the process which will show Mary just how much she cared for her? I can totally see her conflict in doing what she's "supposed" to do by helping complete the ritual for the Dark Lord, but we saw in this episode just how much Tituba feels for Mary. They really care for each other, I'm sure, but it's so complicated and I love it.
Yeah the only thing missing from this episode was answers to John's infliction. Mary telling John everything, even about selling their son to the devil, was brilliant because I wasn't sure she would be so honest about everything, but she was. Again, shows just how much Mary doesn't care about anything else but the safety of her son. I love this side of Mary - the maternal instinct is kicking in overtime and it makes me excited. She hasn't shown her true power lately so I hope this will be the straw that breaks the camel's back ;)
Oh yeah you're right about Anne actually. It's going to definitely be the end of her true innocence then as her soul will be sold, but it's the choices she makes that are going to be the true test. She can still be good, can't she? I mean Mary is supposed to be evil but she's shown how much she has a heart really and it's only her choices that have made her evil. Haha yeah glad we can agree on Hathorne, I thought he might have turned over a new leaf but nope. I have never wanted a character death so much in a long time.
I think the ritual is the next episode, but I've just watched the promo on the website and it appears that most of it might be set during the day - the build-up to the ritual as Mary helps John prepare to fight while seeking the help of Anne to join the battle. Then there's a part of the Countess during the nighttime crying saying "how can you turn your back on us now" which could be during the ritual so maybe something stalls it? It also has Mary finding the coffin with the Countess's original body in so she can destroy it, but will she? The last 4 episodes are going to be so intense now so much is happening and the ritual is upon us. Aahhh I'm so excited!
I kind of do want the ritual to happen, just because if it doesn't, then what? Mary, John and their son will live happily ever after? I mean the writers would have to introduce new threats and foes. And if the ritual does happen, then little John will be the vessel for the Dark Lord. I think that would be cool because then it would still be their son's body but it won't be their son anymore, it will be the Dark Lord. So that will create so many problems for Mary and John when their 'son' is walking around as the most evil creature on Earth.
Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts! Yes, totally agree that this was one of the season's best as it was very balanced in plot and character development. Unbalanced relationships are just so complex and intriguing so that might be why we love them so much as they offer different perspectives in what these characters think and feel. Great comparison between the start of the show and the role reversals between Mary and John, good catch!
ReplyDeleteI think Samuel was more in love with the idea of knowledge and what the witches know about the world that he had yet to learn, so he didn't really think about the evil stuff as we saw how conflicted he was when Cotton was dragged away because of him. Mary being a mother has been such a treat actually. I thought it might hinder her character when the season started but instead it's done the opposite and it's elevated Mary into a more complex character. It would be awful if she lost her son, but I think the ritual will work and little John will be the vessel for the Dark Lord, so Mary's son will still be around but it won't be her son anymore, which will be all the more devastating for her. That's my theory anyway.
I am so glad you have loved season 2 as much as you have as I have too, and I agree on your thoughts of the season and how it compares to season 1. I'm sure Cotton will develop more over time as all the characters have this season so we have to get a season 3 or it will absolutely crush us. Thanks again for reading my review :)
AHHHHH THANK YOU! The promo is absolutely awesome and I CANNOT wait for the next episode!
ReplyDeleteLove your analysis of the Mary/Tituba relationship, it was on point! I hope Mary realises she needs Tituba and they'll team up by season's end against the Countess. I need some Mituba love. Ooooh amazing theory about what's going to happen with the good ol' doctor. I'd love to see him come out of Hell, just to see how that ordeal has changed him and how wicked he could become. Sebastian better watch his back! Anne is going to surprise us by this finale, I just know it. She's gonna be the one to save everyone's ass with her cool powers ;)
Hmmm if they're going to Comic-Con, and that's after season 2 ends, then surely yeah, that kind of indicates there'll be a season 3 otherwise what would be the point of presenting the show at a panel? I don't want to get my hopes up just in case but that is definitely good news!
How awesome is this?!

Nah, I'm not entirely emotionless, I just like to joke that I am. I can be both sensitive and hardened, some things really get to me, others don't.
ReplyDeleteI doubt Tituba would actually get a love interest, but it would be nice if she did, because the one sided pining and devotion to Mary is not great for her character (I love the dynamic, but Tituba needs something outside of Mary) and I'd hate if the only LGBT character on the show is just pining for a woman she can never have.
I dunno, maybe Tituba would end up choosing Mary over her Dark Lord, maybe not, I don't know enough about Tituba's feelings towards the ritual/Dark Lord to be able to tell. I also love Mary's complete and utter devotion to her son, which we knew already last season- she let John get hunted down and almost killed, so she could have her son.
Oh I definitely think Anne could still be good, just like Mary, unless there's some way to force them to be bad/do bad things. But her soul might be damned to hell, who knows. I'd like her and Cotton to team up with Mary and John and work together.
The ritual is either next episode or the one after that, right? I'm trying to figure it out from the press release. It could be interesting if the Dark Lord successfully comes and it's still in the body of Little John, that could be an interesting situation for Mary and John, especially if they think they have some hope of saving their son, otherwise it would just be painful to look at him, seeing their son and knowing the boy isn't him.
Haha I understand now then, and glad to know :P
ReplyDeleteI agree with that statement actually, if the only LGBT character wants what she can't have. That needs more exploration as it's a very grey area on the show. With the news that Salem will be at Comic-Con this year, it's quite likely now that the show will get a Season 3 (shouldn't get hopes up just yet but it's more likely now) and there will be more characterisation if Tituba survives the witch war. I mean there's bound to be casualties in this witch war, right? The Countess must be a goner, and Tituba is more likely to die rather than Anne. I feel like they're just starting to truly explore Anne and she has more to offer than Tituba, so I'm predicting Tituba may die some time soon, either to save Mary and die in the process, or Mary kills her if Tituba betrays her again and sides with the Dark Lord.
I would love a huge team-up of our favourite characters as I love them all, and they kick ass. Imagine a team of Mary, John, Anne, Tituba and Cotton against the Countess, Sebastian and Mercy. I think Mercy is too far gone so she could be another casualty in this war. She's been quite underused lately.
The press release is quite hard to decipher but I could see it happening at the end of the next episode/start of episode 11. That would be very interesting to see if the dark lord uses little John as the vessel and Mary and John are powerless to help their son. So much drama! But the show can handle it as we saw in this episode so I'm excited no matter what happens!
I'm crossing my fingers for a S3. I think Tituba, if she survives, needs some independent character development, outside of Mary. Her getting a love interest would help with that, but I'd take anything at this point. I'd be ok with Mercy and Isaac dying, I'd rather keep Tituba because I like her, but yeah, Anne definitely has more to offer as a character and powerful player.
ReplyDeleteA huge team up of those 5 would be great, though first we'd need Cotton's reaction to the discovery of who the witches really are. I love Lucifer, so I'd love it if he did show up and I think the actor for John Jr. is pretty capable, so he could probably pull it off without being OTT creepy. Unless the Dark Lord gets a new vessel somehow, I don't know what the rules are for this ritual.
A love interest would definitely help her get her own storyline, definitely. I feel like I would be okay with Mercy and Isaac dying too as they have both ran their course. I do not see any use for Isaac in season 3 and I feel like I've been enjoying the show more without him dragging it down. I don't hate him or anything, I'm just sick of his uselessness. Mercy is beyond redemption to remain in Salem without Mary killing her. Like the Countess, it's either her or Mary and we all know Mary will come out the victor when all is said and done.
ReplyDeleteI think Cotton's hatred for the witches is so strong that it would only fuel his desire even more to kill them. Though I bet if he found out about Anne, he would be conflicted, for sure. We haven't really seen much of this love spell lately so I'm anticipating some kind of consequence soon. I think they'd end up finding a new vessel for the Dark Lord and he won't remain in Mary's son for too long. I do think the kid is creepy and great but I don't really like the thought of him being the big bad after Increase and the Countess - he probably wouldn't live up to them so he'd need a new, more grown-up body.
I feel bad for wishing poor Isaac's death, but I don't see the point in his character. My friend thinks he'll survive because he's married to Tituba IRL, but personally I don't think that's a guarantee. He really is useless and I don't miss him when he's gone. Mercy has a purpose right now, but by the end of the season she can leave without anyone shedding a tear.
ReplyDeleteCotton's reaction should be interesting and yeah, there's the love spell he's under as well. Hell, John is only working with them right now to save his son, after that who knows what he'll do. That's an interesting theory, I'd love the Dark Lord to bounce to a new body, maybe another stellar casting, like they did with Increase and Ingrid, someone electrifying with presence, someone formidable.
Yeah, you're probably right about Samuel being driven by a thirst for knowledge that trumps his morals or views of good and evil. He's an interesting love interest for Mary because he accepts her for who she is and is more of an equal to her than anyone else has been. He loves her, but he also loves that knowledge and mystery that she represents, so it'll be interesting to see how their relationship changes when/ if he becomes a full-fledged witch. Will he stand with her in her battles, or will he want to go off on his own and struggle against her for independence? Either way, they relationship will remain intriguing to watch.
ReplyDeleteAs for Mary's son John, you're probably right that he'll become a vessel for the Dark Lord and Mary will have to pay the price of losing her son in order to assure the ritual is completed, which will break her heart, but I think she loves the power and independence being head witch gives her more than she values any single relationship, even with her son.
I hope there'll be a season 3, and I'm fairly confident there will be, because Salem is WGN's first original show, so I doubt they'll cancel it so early on, but I suppose anything could happen.
Thank you for writing this review. I always love to hear what other people have to say about the shows I love, and I appreciate that you actually give your thoughts on the episode instead just writing a pretty much straight recap. I'd be lying if I didn't say that I enjoy how often our opinions overlap, but even when they don't, understand where you're coming from and I always enjoy reading what you have to say.
I think if Samuel gets out of Hell, he'll be so consumed with revenge for Sebastian and maybe come out a totally different character. I doubt anybody coming out of Hell would remain the same.
ReplyDeleteSeason 3 is looking very likely now actually with the show being announced to have a panel at Comic-Con. They wouldn't put them there if there was no season 3 to promote. I expect an official announcement soon.
Thanks so much for reading and your comments and sorry for the delay in replying. I much prefer to analyse and give opinions on an episode rather than just rehash what happened in a recap, I've only just started to find my writing style on this site since joining 10 months ago. I always love hearing what fans of the show like you have to say, and we have agreed on a lot. And don't worry if our opinions ever differ, I'm like you, I'd totally see where you're coming from too :)
