Rookie Blue - Uprising - Review

This week, the officers of 15 go to an understaffed women’s correctional facility to help with inmate transfers and Sam and Marlo find out that they are having a baby girl. Directed by Gregory Smith who plays Dov Epstein, it was beautifully shot and the episode had me on the edge of my seat. Andy, Gail, Nick and Juliet are separated in the beginning of the episode as a riot starts at the prison. Facing different situations, the cops have to find a way to wait it out while others are working to get them out safely. Rookie Blue is the new Black.

With the help of Traci, Dov is taking a break from the evidence room bombing corruption case to help the officers trapped in the women’s prison by finding out the truth behind inmate Jodie Robbin’s attempted murder. Andy and Juliet are stuck with injured inmate Kenzi Grant, who has a knife to Juliet’s throat and holds the both of them hostage while trying to clear her name. Nick is trapped with the other inmate, Rochelle, and we find out that she’s the one responsible for the stabbing. Before things could get really dicey at the infirmary, Tactical arrives just in time to stop the riot and save the day.

Gail, stuck in a less dangerous situation, is trapped in a cell with an inmate and reluctantly listens (and accepts) parenting tips from the older woman. She opens up about her plans to adopt Sophie from last season and they bond over parental advice and bucket lists. At the end of the episode, we see Gail’s social worker at the station and for some random reason Gail pinches the woman’s butt and manage to get away with it with a smile from the woman.

I know it’s supposed to be cute and flirty but to me it’s just wrong. Gail is a police officer and they are in the middle of a police station and isn’t that lady (what's her name? I couldn't catch it) in charge of Gail’s adoption? Isn’t it a conflict of interest? Yes, let’s assume they have been seeing each other a lot because of adoption procedures, parenting classes and stuff and maybe both women like each other. But is it okay to touch someone randomly? I know I would be mortified if I happened to pinch someone’s butt.

I adore Gail Peck, she is one of my favourite characters on the show. If the social worker turns out to be Gail’s love interest this season, I don’t see it working out for her. She and Gail might be cute together but realistically if Gail wants the adoption to go through without a hitch, a relationship with the social worker might not be a great idea. Plus, I love Gail and Holly as a couple. I’m still holding out for Holly to return, if not this season then maybe the next, if there is even a 7th season.

Oliver is sporting an eye patch because of a cornea infection thanks to stray cats. Oliver has been a bit of a comic relief this episode along with scenes between Duncan and Chloe. I hope Oliver gets to keep his eye patch on for at least one more episode. And can we talk about Duncan and Chloe? Because I don’t like what is going on, no. I don’t like them together, I’d rather see Chloe and Nick as a couple than Chloe and Duncan. Maybe a brother-sister type of relationship, but not like in a romantic way. No, please. No.

Andy is on to Juliet. The injured inmate, Kenzi Grant recognizes Juliet when she was back in Vancouver. Juliet and Kenzi met when Juliet supposedly worked undercover in Vancouver and things got messy. She fell in love with a drug dealer but managed to get herself out of the mess. Andy isn’t buying it, which is understandable. Later on we see Juliet in a car with the same man from the first episode. I’m still sticking with my theory that Juliet is from Internal Affairs. I do like the scene when Andy and Juliet bond over Nick and how Andy overshares her current situation with Sam and Marlo as a way to break the ice.

Speaking of Sam and Marlo, the soon-to-be parents are at the hospital for a baby check-up. I’m sure many of you (at least I did) panicked when we thought something was wrong with the baby. It turns out to be a false alarm and we receive the great news that it’s going to be a girl.

Sam and Marlo have a little talk about their current predicament after the check-up. Marlo has her doubts about how this is going to work, between her, Andy and Sam, and the baby. Sam reassures Marlo that he’s going to be there for both her and Andy and at the end of the episode, we see Sam continue to do some more reassuring back at home when it’s clear that Andy is still understandably struggling with the hand she’s being dealt with.

Not going to lie, I really enjoy the scenes between Sam and Marlo, especially when they are waiting for news on the scans. Ever since the introduction of Sam and Marlo’s relationship in Season 4, I’ve liked them as a couple. Don’t get me wrong, I like McSwarek too, but Sam and Marlo bring a different dynamic onto the screen. I really hope Marlo is not up to anything and they can actually have a healthy relationship for themselves and the baby.
