Rookie Blue - Uprising - Review

Reviews Rookie Blue ZHThis week, the officers of 15 go to an understaffed women’s correctional facility to help with inmate transfers and Sam and Marlo find out that they are having a baby girl. Directed by Gregory Smith who plays Dov Epstein, it was beautifully shot and the episode had me on the edge of my seat. Andy, Gail, Nick and Juliet are separated in the beginning of the episode as a riot starts at the prison. Facing different situations, the cops have to find a way to wait it out while others are working to get them out safely. Rookie Blue is the new Black.
With the help of Traci, Dov is taking a break from the evidence room bombing corruption case to help the officers trapped in the women’s prison by finding out the truth behind inmate Jodie Robbin’s attempted murder. Andy and Juliet are stuck with injured inmate Kenzi Grant, who has a knife to Juliet’s throat and holds the both of them hostage while trying to clear her name. Nick is trapped with the other inmate, Rochelle, and we find out that she’s the one responsible for the stabbing. Before things could get really dicey at the infirmary, Tactical arrives just in time to stop the riot and save the day.
Gail, stuck in a less dangerous situation, is trapped in a cell with an inmate and reluctantly listens (and accepts) parenting tips from the older woman. She opens up about her plans to adopt Sophie from last season and they bond over parental advice and bucket lists. At the end of the episode, we see Gail’s social worker at the station and for some random reason Gail pinches the woman’s butt and manage to get away with it with a smile from the woman.
I know it’s supposed to be cute and flirty but to me it’s just wrong. Gail is a police officer and they are in the middle of a police station and isn’t that lady (what's her name? I couldn't catch it) in charge of Gail’s adoption? Isn’t it a conflict of interest? Yes, let’s assume they have been seeing each other a lot because of adoption procedures, parenting classes and stuff and maybe both women like each other. But is it okay to touch someone randomly? I know I would be mortified if I happened to pinch someone’s butt.
I adore Gail Peck, she is one of my favourite characters on the show. If the social worker turns out to be Gail’s love interest this season, I don’t see it working out for her. She and Gail might be cute together but realistically if Gail wants the adoption to go through without a hitch, a relationship with the social worker might not be a great idea. Plus, I love Gail and Holly as a couple. I’m still holding out for Holly to return, if not this season then maybe the next, if there is even a 7th season.
Oliver is sporting an eye patch because of a cornea infection thanks to stray cats. Oliver has been a bit of a comic relief this episode along with scenes between Duncan and Chloe. I hope Oliver gets to keep his eye patch on for at least one more episode. And can we talk about Duncan and Chloe? Because I don’t like what is going on, no. I don’t like them together, I’d rather see Chloe and Nick as a couple than Chloe and Duncan. Maybe a brother-sister type of relationship, but not like in a romantic way. No, please. No.
Andy is on to Juliet. The injured inmate, Kenzi Grant recognizes Juliet when she was back in Vancouver. Juliet and Kenzi met when Juliet supposedly worked undercover in Vancouver and things got messy. She fell in love with a drug dealer but managed to get herself out of the mess. Andy isn’t buying it, which is understandable. Later on we see Juliet in a car with the same man from the first episode. I’m still sticking with my theory that Juliet is from Internal Affairs. I do like the scene when Andy and Juliet bond over Nick and how Andy overshares her current situation with Sam and Marlo as a way to break the ice.
Speaking of Sam and Marlo, the soon-to-be parents are at the hospital for a baby check-up. I’m sure many of you (at least I did) panicked when we thought something was wrong with the baby. It turns out to be a false alarm and we receive the great news that it’s going to be a girl.
Sam and Marlo have a little talk about their current predicament after the check-up. Marlo has her doubts about how this is going to work, between her, Andy and Sam, and the baby. Sam reassures Marlo that he’s going to be there for both her and Andy and at the end of the episode, we see Sam continue to do some more reassuring back at home when it’s clear that Andy is still understandably struggling with the hand she’s being dealt with.
Not going to lie, I really enjoy the scenes between Sam and Marlo, especially when they are waiting for news on the scans. Ever since the introduction of Sam and Marlo’s relationship in Season 4, I’ve liked them as a couple. Don’t get me wrong, I like McSwarek too, but Sam and Marlo bring a different dynamic onto the screen. I really hope Marlo is not up to anything and they can actually have a healthy relationship for themselves and the baby.
What did you think about this week’s episode? I really enjoyed it. The usual elements of case of the week and interrogations were still shown, but it was the different and refreshing premise that I really liked. Let’s talk relationships. Are you into Chloe and Duncan? What about Gail and the social worker? Do you think Sam will be able to keep up his end of the bargain? To be there for both Marlo and Andy? Comment and let me know!
IMO the whole episode seemed kind of all over the place with no real resolution.
ReplyDeleteIt's clear that the writer's tried to make most of the Viewers, who simply don't care about Marlo, feel for Sam when there's a hint of something about the baby being wrong and us rooting for everything to be okay. Didn't happen for me. In the end I just got another glimpse of Marlo trying to do what's best for herself and not taking anyone else into consideration. Plus, doesn't she think that her child having someone like Andy (open about feelings, trying to do the right thing etc. ) in it's life. Like really, she expects Sam not to tell Andy about it being okay or a girl?
When did Sam turn into a nature boy? I mean as a child. It was always implied that he grew up in the city and never saw much of anything else.
Why would Gail Need a bucket list if adopting Sophie is what she totally wants without a doubt. I always sort of viewed them as connected to some dreaded Event like end of summer, end of winter, end of a school break etc. So shouldn't she be looking forwards to create new memories once she's with Sophie?
What did Chloe do all episode? I saw her like twice. Oliver's eye-patch wasn't that interesting. And why in the world did noone call Sam to tell him his girlfriend is stuck on a riot. And then we get his lackluster reaction regarding that, like she just forgot to pick up milk?
And it is sort of a given that at some point Sam won't be able to be at two places at once.Even now it's clear that by focusing so much on this babystuff he's sort of neglecting his relationship with Andy. I mean they talk without really saying anything towards each other. They're supposed to be a unit so why would he keep it from her that Marlo doesn't want her involved? What if Marlo is suddenly weird towards Andy who has no idea why and thinks she offended the other woman?
I have this weird feeling that either Marlo or Juliette is responsible for the bombing in the evidence room. Can't stand Marlo whatever she and Sam had can't come close to what Andy and Sam have that's true love. I love what Sam said when Marlo ask him how is this suppose to work with Andy in the picture and Sam said I will be there for u and the baby but Andy can't come third aww that was so sweet is child comes first Andy come second. Anyways am not worried cuz we all know Andy and Sam will get married this season.
ReplyDeleteYou made some valid points. I really want Marlo to not have any ulterior motives, but yeah she was a little unreasonable to Sam and Andy this episode. And thanks for bringing up that Sam wasn't notified that Andy was stuck in the prison. I didn't realize it till now.
ReplyDeleteYeah someone on the show is definitely responsible for the bomb. Can't wait to find out who.
ReplyDeleteI'm bummed by rookie blue, I loved the show now it is just easy (lazy?) writting. I'm 99% sure that the bombing was ordered by Duncan's step father and Peck's brother is the one that put the bomb in the evidence room. They even bring Peck's replacement for Traci when he'll be caught. That guy with his "fairytales" stories. Juliet is obviously working to find the bad guys. Since we learn she was with a drug dealer, she's probably following evidences. She'll find who's responsible for the bombing and will close her case.
ReplyDeleteIf it turns out to be true, poor Gail (again!) so I hope she'll get Sophia. I agree with you about the social worker. Rookie blue always had "inappropriate" relationships (co-workers, boss...). I think adopting a child is hard enough and dating the person that could take her back easily is not very wise. Even though she definitely should have someone.
I agree with you about Marlo and Sam. And I hope they don't make Marlo lose the baby. That's actually the only thing (for now?) that keeps me watching.
I don't know this year they are making weird/forced relationships Duncan/Chloé, Nick/Juliet, Chris/Married wife??
On the other hand (because not everything is bad) I like Dov/Marlo but as friends, and Chloé/Nick. Even if they replace Andy/Nick's friendship with Chloé
I have to say I used to love Andy/Sam, but when Andy/Nick happened I really wanting it to see it continue. They just killed their relationship to make Andy/Sam again. Like they did with Luke. I don't see how Malo/Sam/Baby/Andy can work. I think it makes sense that Andy stay with because she chose him. But if/when the baby will arrive I don't think she'll find her place. How awkward at the maternity... I guess I have to wait and see.
I'm sure Duncan's step father is involved somehow... And you're absolutely right about lazy writing this season. Since last season, actually. I love the show, I really do, but sometimes they make it hard for me to like it. I think the baby drama is unnecessary, and right now I'm just going with the flow and lowering my expectations.
