Rookie Blue - Letting Go - Review
Jun 12, 2015
Reviews Rookie Blue ZHA bunch of storylines are set in motion during this week’s episode. The Andy/Sam/Marlo baby drama has taken a backseat to make room for other equally important character developments and storylines. The Nick centric episode shed some light on his family history and how he became an orphan when he was 12.
This is the episode which officially introduces the corruption storyline as Commissioner Santana makes his season debut. His presence in this episode feels tense, shady and somewhat uncomfortable, which sets him up perfectly as this season’s big bad. Oliver is caught off guard as the Commissioner pops by unannounced to personally inform him that his daughter Izzy, is being detained at another division for possession of drugs. The Commission is willing – too willing, in fact – to sweep this under the rug and make it go away. Throughout the episode we see Oliver struggling to make a decision, whether or not he should accept Santana’s help to pull Izzy’s record from the system. In the end, for the sake of his daughter’s future, Oliver calls Santana to take him up on his offer. That’s probably going to come back and bite Oliver in the ass.
What I want to know though, is that has Santana been keeping tabs on Oliver’s family ever since he made Staff Sergeant? Did he have someone slip the pills on Izzy or was the whole thing a coincidence? The Commissioner is obviously a busy man and it’s clear that he wants Oliver in his pocket but I cannot imagine the man dropping everything to show up at Oliver’s office at the opportunity to buy his loyalty. Something’s fishy here. I’m scared for Oliver.
The Ted McDonald case is shut down by Jarvis and this means Marlo’s job at 15 is done and Dov is back on the streets. But that does not stop Dov from reaching out to Marlo. He wants to continue the investigation without Jarvis’s or Oliver’s permission. I just hope whatever they manage to find out later in the season will not get them in trouble. They’re stepping onto a dangerous path and Marlo is pregnant, so I hope nothing bad or life threatening will happen to both of them.
It is established at the end of the episode that Dov doesn’t want to be in uniform anymore. After getting a taste of what working in Intelligence might be like, Dov’s ready for a change of scenery. I’m not at all surprised by Dov’s career decision. I’ve said it in one of the reviews last season that Dov would be a good fit in Intelligence. He’s a smart guy and is always curious and questioning things during cases. I’m very glad he’s heading in that direction this season.
One character that I wish would have a great storyline this season is Chloe. After getting shot, her storyline has been revolving around romantic relationships and sometimes being the comic relief on the show. I want to see the serious side of Chloe. Nobody can be this perky without a dark side, right? But given the shorter season I don’t think Chloe will get the chance to show us she’s more than just a bubbly wide eyed police officer. She’s still a rookie and the original rookies are the priority, screen time and storylines wise. I really hope there’s a seventh season.
Chloe is still not over her breakup with Dov, but by the end of the episode it’s clear that she’s trying to move on as she asks Duncan out for a beer. I’m still not into the whole Chloe and Duncan thing though. I hope they will just become best friends and nothing more. When they interact it seems more like friendly siblings banter to me.
What I’m surprised is the lack of McSwarek in this episode. It’s a welcome sight because it gives other characters more screen time in this short season. Sam is only present to assign roles for case of the week and Andy is on desk duty with Chloe.
Gail is making a bucket list, things she wants to do before becoming a mother. Why do I feel like the adoption is not going to be successful? Do you guys feel the same way? It’s nice to see Andy and Gail hanging out again after what happened in Season 4 with Nick. I love it when the characters hang out at the Penny when they’re not out on the streets catching bad guys. Weirdly enough, I find Duncan’s presence this week tolerable. Duncan and Gail scenes are hilarious to watch. I hope we get to see Duncan giving Gail hip hop dance lessons.
This week we learn about Nick’s past and how it is coming back to haunt him in the present. We learn that Nick’s parents died in a car accident when he was a kid and he also has a brother named Finn. On the way to work, Nick gets a call from Finn and immediately goes to visit him. It is shown that Finn is paralysed because of the accident and he tells Nick that he saw the man, Marco Brunswick, who’s responsible for the hit and run 18 years ago. Ditching work and lying to his partner of the day, Nick tracks the guy down and that’s how the revenge plot from any other TV show or movie begins.
Juliet senses something is wrong with Nick and with a little help from her fellow colleagues and digging into his past, she finds out the truth about the car accident, the brother he never mentioned and goes after him.
Nick’s revenge plot is fairly predictable. We know Nick would never kill Marco and Juliet arrives just in time to cuff him. When Finn finds out, he’s a little disappointed. I guess he wanted him dead. But during the confrontation between Nick and Marco, Marco tells him Finn was the one driving and he ran into Marco’s car that night. Despite the fact that Marco was drunk and he was speeding, technically it was Finn who caused the accident. Nick is pissed that his brother has been lying to him all these years, they fight for a bit before Nick walks away claiming he’s over it. It’s been 18 years. I guess Nick gets to walk away with closure?
At the end of the episode in a tender scene, Nick kisses Juliet and I’m sure drama will ensue in the next episode. Juliet will probably want it to be a one-time thing, that sort of scenario. And the ‘will they or won’t they’ between those two will continue through the rest of the season. This is just my theory and based on the writers’ track record, I think it’s an acceptable theory.
What did you guys think of Letting Go? Too much Nick or too little McSwarek? Thoughts on Nick and Juliet? Do you think anything bad will happen to Dov and Marlo while pursuing the investigation? How do you feel about Commissioner Santana’s return, how soon do you think he will be collecting his debt from Oliver and what would he have Oliver do? Let me know in the comments section!
this episode was made for Nick Collins fans.. I just miss a real McSwarek moment.. but i get it that they need to give a time to other characters... But this is definitely not one of my favorite episodes!
ReplyDeleteAnd Dov, i liked Dov as a street cop.. They did present him that way like that's what he always wanted.. I miss him on the street with Diaz.
And then he and Chloe.. i mean really? is he going to let her go because of one kiss? she almost died he was like he can't lose her, where is that feeling?
I do get some feeling that they are going to let someone die... to bring a little of drama, now than baby story is as good as solved.. I hope not, but...
God, I really hoped Andy would go after nick not juliet, she is so anoying. i don't like her at all. I really miss andy/nick scenes. just because they are not together anymore doesn't mean they can't be friends again. they've had such a great friendship... i hope we will see them together again.
ReplyDeleteBased on the fact that I'm simply not that interested in Nick as a character, for me, this episode was a bit boring.
ReplyDeleteI think Marlo and Dov are really stupid for following up with the corruption case on their own. Didn't they learn anything from the mess she created in S4? I don't think anyone can just write what happened with officers getting seriously injured to a civilian dying off to her being bipolar. She made the decision to stop her medication knowing what consequences could arise so it is her fault even if noone seems to hold her responsible. That's why I'm having such a hard time simply accepting her promotion (because it is a promotion, looking as Dov had to set up an interview etc.)and her being back at work. Marlo simply seems like the sort of person who got used to do whatever she wants to do without any consideration for anyone else, now that might even include her own kid. She just seems selfish to me, because she takes all those risks and makes decisions that involve other peoples lifes in a very serious way and doesn't even seem to care.
I find it weird that her being pregnant is supposed to be such a big deal and is most likely used as the reason Andy and Sam are getting further in their own relationship yet nothing happens. The bump's getting bigger every episode without any talk about what the future might look like once the kid's born. Very disappointing. The end and the marriage stuff will look totally rushed because we don't see any real development there.
I'm not a fan of Oliver's decision to take the Commissioner's offer because I could smell it from afar that he wasn't just doing him a favour. Santana seems like the Person who lets other people do the dirty work for him and he himself looks all innocent. So he's probably going to be back once the heat's on him in order for Oliver to make the case against him disappear. Or he's forcing Oliver to do something that will implicate him into the corruption case too. I get that he wants to protect his child, but at some point they have to be Held responsible for their cholces and it's not like this was Izzy's firt bad decision. Plus him using his position to get a personal gain puts him sort of in the same light as corrupt cops even if that's not his Intention.
Yeah I do like Nick as a character but this episode felt like fan service to me. I feel like Dov and Chloe would get back together eventually... They're perfect as a couple. God I hope no one dies! But it's entirely possible.
ReplyDeleteYes I miss Andy/Nick scenes too. I love their friendship. If only Andy went with Juliet to stop Nick though. I'd like to see that.
ReplyDeleteI like Nick but I think this episode is the weakest so far. It was supposed to be a Nick centric episode, but his scenes were the weakest. They wasted precious screen time on a predictable revenge plot.
ReplyDeleteWhat you said about Marlo, I've been asking myself that too. There are too many loopholes that I've concluded are from the sloppy writing. And I observed that the baby bump is getting bigger week after week. I have no idea why.
Santana is the typical dirty cop, he knew just the right buttons to push to make Oliver take the bait. I'm nervous what he'd ask Oliver to do. Probably to cover something up or look the other way when needed.
I love your theory about the Commissioner drugging Izzy. It's wicked and much more interresting like that!
ReplyDeleteNick's story came out of nowhere. I don't really recall when they say that his parents died when he was a kid. So the centric was rushed. It should have been planified. Like previous season a heart to heart scene where he talks about his childhood where we learned that he is an orphan.
They forced again Nick/Juliet, she was a pissed because he lied but she is her partner since like 5seconds. I think Andy or even ChloƩ should have go instead of her. Andy said she cared about him and find Juliet shady but she let her handle the situation? Makes no sense to me.
At least it was a episode that was not just about McSwarek. But this episode only served to make Nick/Juliet a thing.
I feel like Dov' will leave this season and will not return if there's a next one... That would explain why he's not getting back with ChloƩ
Thanks for the review. I definitely prefer those episodes where they focus on the other characters more, so I liked that this one gave us more about Nick's story. I didn't see it as fan-service, at all...more like something way overdue. I also loved the brief dance scene with Duncan and Peck and I'm actually glad that they're trying to make his character more tolerable. I'm not sure what to make of Nick and Juliet....the relationship came out of the blue (like most relationships on Rookie Blue) and as much as I like Nick, it's just hard to really get invested in these two...at least not yet.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I haven't been crazy about the direction of the show, and that's mainly because the other characters (outside of Andy) don't get the kind of cohesive plot they deserve. I also think that the writers rely too heavily on the McSwarek relationship to carry the plot, which has ultimately led to a somewhat stagnant show (good if you're a McSwarek fan,...but not-so-good if you aren't that interested in them). And while they do focus on the other characters, they always tend to get these inconsistent storylines that make no sense for the characters. Dov and Gayle are the perfect example of this. Two great characters, with crappy inconsistent plots, that change dramatically from season to season. Even though they're my favorite characters, it really is difficult to get invested in any of their stories. I think the actor playing Dov is one of the strongest of the "rookies", but his talent gets wasted all the time, and I miss the times when we used to see him interacting with characters that he had the most chemistry with (like Oliver or Gayle). The Dov/Chloe relationship was completely random and I'm glad it's over, and I don't think that Dov and Marlo teaming up professionally really works either, which is surprising, because I love both characters. I think they did a good job developing the Traci/Steve relationship, but I found it odd that they were suddenly back together this season, when they seemed to be on a "break" last season. It just seems like lazy writing.
Bring back mccollins , I loved Andy and nick together
ReplyDeleteI mean, it's got to be more than just a coincidence right? How convenient is it for the Commissioner to pop up right out of the blue just to help Oliver? That man is all kinds of shady.
ReplyDeleteIt might not be fan service, but something is missing though. Maybe it felt rushed? I know the writer wanna give us some Nick backstory but it didn't feel right. And I agree with you about inconsistent storylines. I love Dov and Gail too, along with Oliver. If given enough screen time and a decent storyline, those characters would definitely get to shine and live up to the potential.
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe to say that Dov and Marlo working together would be a disaster. They don't know who/what they're dealing with and it could get them in serious danger. But that's where the drama comes in, I guess. I love Traci and Steve's relationship, but they didn't show how the couple got back together or how they resolved their issues and I was a little disappointed by that when I watched the premiere.
All signs point to lazy writing. I've lost count of how many times I've saw those two words when I go on the internet to read about what people think of this season. I love the show but sometimes I wish they could've done better.
Same here. To me, that relationship was a step in the right direction for both characters, At this point, I'm not too optimistic about it happening, but you never know...
ReplyDeleteI like Nick so much, he is amazingly gorgeous, sweet, funny, smart, friendly, a great cop, he's a sweetie, but I just can't find the character interesting, it's so weird. I think it's probably the way the character is written and I don't know know how to explain it, because, even though I like him very much, I find him boring. I wish the writers could make him more interesting to watch, but, to me, the Juliet and the family thing didn't do the trick... At least, not yet.
ReplyDeleteAnother one that I can't find interesting for the life of me is Marlo. Juliet also.
On another front, I really hope we haven't seen the end of Dov and Chloe and that they get back together in the future.
Regarding the Gail storylines, IMHO, they have been all over the place for quite some time, and I just hate all of it.
I don't know, it seems that they are trying too hard to make Duncan likeable by being the comic relief this season, but I just don't like him at all and I really hope that he doesn't end up with Chloe.
The next episode seems nice, since I'll get to see one of my favorite couple of the show in "action": Steve and Traci.
Even though, pretty much all of the storylines come out of the blue and are not handled in a way that feels natural, I still really love the show.
WIth my comment about the bump getting bigget and bigger each Episode without anything being resolved was that Sam/Andy and even M seem to sort of take it lightly that there's going to be a tiny human that's going to count on them to have their stuff figured out once it's born. But time goes on an on and noone seems to care about actually making a step into the direction of the blended/non-traditional family they will be.
ReplyDeleteSo seeing that it Looks like the writers might not spend any time on that because the blended family thing isn't going to happen. However they might achieve that.
