Rookie Blue - Home Run - Review

I hope you guys remembered Rookie Blue now airs on Wednesdays, starting this week. If not, this post will still be here when you've watched it on Thursday. The Peck siblings team up when a drive-by shooting interrupts a community outreach baseball game, Andy and Sam spend the weekend at Oliver’s cabin and Noelle is finally back.

A lot happened in this episode. Gregory Smith directed the episode, so we know it’s going to be a good one. Let’s start with Gail’s adoption. Charlotte Sullivan is amazing in this episode. Gail is nervous. The social worker is back at 15 to talk to Steve as a part of the adoption process. When Gail is being asked if she’s done any community service involving kids, Steve and Traci jump into the conversation to help Gail. Conveniently there is a baseball game organized by cops for at risk youths that day and Gail takes credit for it, telling the social worker she’s the one organizing it. The social worker is impressed.

When the baseball game is in full swing, a drive-by shooting interrupts the game and a couple of kids get hurt. Dov goes after the SUV and manage to get a partial plate which turns out belonged to Boz Shepherd, a gang leader whom Steve has been trying to arrest for months. Steve is leading the investigation and teaming up with Gail to make sure Boz is the one responsible. His alibi checked out at first, but Michie Brewer, one of the witnesses at the game tells the police that Boz was the one who pulled the trigger. We all know when the suspect is easily caught, chances are it’s not going to be that person. Witnesses lie all the time on TV.

Steve is ready to take Boz down for good, but something is not right. Gail continues the investigation behind Steve’s back although she knows how upset he is going to be. In the end, the shooter was Michie’s brother. When Gail returns to 15, the siblings have a little quarrel about not having each other's backs, leaving Gail almost in tears.

Then we have a heart-warming scene when Sophie visits Gail at the station. I’m really warming up to the adoption storyline, but I don’t want to get my hopes up because I have a feeling Gail is not going to get Sophie at the end of the season.

I’ve always hoped for more Peck siblings interaction since the last season. This episode showed me the dynamic between the two characters. Even though they are siblings, they are not that close and they are not always on the same page. Steve is the cop who would do anything to solve a case and Gail is the cop who tries to do things by the book. The more I think about it, the more I suspect Steve is the dirty cop at 15. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is the one who put the bomb in the evidence room. Steve is definitely capable of it.

Here is where it gets interesting. Andy is getting more suspicious of Juliet when she sees her getting into a car with the same man from previous episodes. She tells Sam about her suspicions and Sam reveals that he knew something fishy was going on during the Ted McDonald case, so he called someone he could trust at IA. It is revealed at the end of the episode that Noelle is the one leading the corruption investigation and Juliet (I knew it!!!) is sent from IA to find the dirty cop. I always thought Noelle had been on the longest maternity leave, I didn't know she transferred to IA.

Juliet knows a lot. About Chris’s cocaine addiction and his affair with Jarvis’s wife. About Duncan having stepfather issues. But Noelle isn’t buying it that one of those guys is the dirty cop, which I find amusing, like how she brushes off Chris being the guy. Puppy Chris Diaz is capable of sleeping with his boss’s wife but can’t possibly be the one who bombed the evidence room. I’m glad Noelle is the one in charge since she knows the guys at 15 well.

Noelle is not impressed, until Juliet explains about how there were people who had access to the evidence room using their key cards. And there is a name that pops up as suspicious, who entered the room 20 minutes before the bomb exploded. Oliver Shaw.

Now, I think it’s safe to say that Oliver is innocent. If it is that easy to find the one responsible, Dov and Marlo would have made that connection the minute they started sniffing around. I think Commissioner Santana knows IA is onto him, that someone, Juliet, is investigating around 15 and he had someone frame Oliver before IA closed in on him. And I think that someone is Steve.

Let’s talk about McSwarek. I know fans must be rejoicing because Sam finally proposed! The journey to Oliver’s cabin wasn’t as smooth as Sam had planned, but they got there anyway. Kind of fitting, don’t you think? Their relationship has been a rollercoaster ride, but they manage to survive the ups and downs and come out on the other side stronger and steadier than ever. Sure, they have a lot to face but at least now they will face it together, as Mr and Mrs Swarek.

This season has definitely found its footing since episode 4. Week after week the episodes get even better and better and now it feels like it is constantly moving towards a direction. The past couple of episodes reminded me why I love the show so much and how glad am I that I stuck around through Season 5. We are halfway through this season. My only hope is that the show continues in this pace, with great character developments and plot twists. And also for Chris to have a decent storyline before the show ends.
