Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. ABC opened this first week in June on a winning household overnight note care of two hours of summer mainstay “The Bachelorette” (#1 for the night: 4.8 rating/8 share from 8-10 p.m.) and the debut of new scripted drama “The Whispers” (#2: 3.9/ 7). While “The Whispers” did trail an encore of “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS (#1: 4.3/ 7) by nine percent, comparably this opener was 26 percent above the season-premiere of year-ago time period occupant “Mistresses” (#3: 3.1/ 5 on 6/02/14). The overnight retention for “The Whispers” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Bachelorette” (4.7/ 8) was respectable at 83 percent. And there was only a seven percent drop in household rating at 10:30 p.m. (4.1 to 3.8).
Considering the 3.1 overnight rating for “Mistresses” one year earlier translated into 4.66 million viewers and a 1.2 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data), this could result in about a 1.5 rating in the demo for “The Whispers.” And this will clearly beat the aforementioned encore of “NCIS: Los Angeles” and week two of NBC Bear Grylls reality/competition “The Island” (#3: 2.2/ 4).
While a 2.2/ 4 in the household overnights is nothing to boast about for “The Island,” this was flat from the week-ago debut (which translated into a 1.2 rating/ 4 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). But part of that consistency stemmed from the stronger lead-in support from “American Ninja Warrior,” which grew week to week by 35 percent in the overnights with a 4.2/ 7 from 8-10 p.m. (#2). And the 3.5/ 6 one week earlier already resulted in a 1.8/ 6 in adults 18-49. With that in mind, expect “American Ninja Warrior” to crack a 2-rating in the demo.
In season-premiere news, two hours of “So You Think You Can Dance” returned on Fox with a 3.3/ 5 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 17 percent below the year-ago season-opener (4.0/ 6 on 5/28/14), which is the now the lowest return overnight performance for the veteran dance competition (which now includes Paula Abdul and Jason derulo as two of the judges). Comparably, expect about a 1.3 rating in adults 18-49 for “So You Think You Can Dance” (versus a 1.6 last year).
Elsewhere, CBS populated the evening with repeats of “2 Broke Girls” (#3: 3.7/ 6), “Mike & Molly” (#3: 3.9/ 6), “Scorpion” (#3: 3.9/ 6) and aforementioned “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 4.3/ 7). And corporate cousin The CW aired encore telecasts of dramas “The Originals” (#5: 0.5/ 1), which is moving into the Thursday 9 p.m. hour (out of parent “The Vampire Diaries”) next fall, and “Jane the Virgin” (#5: 0.4/ 1). While upcoming Monday 8 p.m. CW occupant “My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is perfectly compatible into “Jane the Virgin” (and one of the more promising new network shows from a quality standpoint), don’t expect too much from the traditional ratings.

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Hoping The Whispers skewed young.
ReplyDeleteGreat for the Whispers, Bachelorette, and Ninja Warrior. Good for SYTYCD. Horrible for The Island which is being wasted with the Ninja Warrior lead-in. It really should be pulled for a scripted option that may have a future in season.
ReplyDeleteNice rise for American Ninja Warrior. This show has a track record of rising, so it will be interesting to see when it cracks a 2.0. NBC has to be pleased here. The Island is just hanging on to the lead in. If Running Wild does better here, that's the Bear Grylls project NBC will choose for next year. They don't need two.
ReplyDeleteOuch at So You Think You Can Dance. FOX went out and got Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo and it resulted in a 17% drop. That's not good. You never want to spend more for less. Not a good start for the veteran FOX reality series as it'll probably be in the 1.2/1.3 range.
The Whispers did OK in HHs, it will be interesting to see how young it skews.

ReplyDeleteThe real question is how low can Crazy Ex Girlfriend rate and still get renewed on CW. While this may be something that select critics like, the audience is not going to understand it. It's way too niche and cutesy for its own good.

ReplyDeleteWhen I look at NBC's profile, the surprise is American Ninja Warrior. This show is growing each year. Maybe it's the sports element as it's more of a sporting event than reality show.
ReplyDeleteSadly, they don't. Which was poor scheduling as NBC could collapse again midseason with nothing on the bench left. They will have to continue the underperforming/low ratings for another 4 episodes.

ReplyDeleteI am usually very much against moving summer players into the regular season as I feel it very rarely works but back in February I thought NBC could have maybe aired it Thursdays at 8 as lead-in for The Blacklist. It would have more than doubled The Slap and give The Blacklist some sort of lead-in. They also have very similar skews gender and age wise. They are probably better off dominating Mondays in the summer though but still, for such a big investment that the blacklist was, maybe it could have been worth it.

That's a really good scheduling suggestion. It would have done better than The Slap on Thursdays. I'm guessing that since NBC shares the show with Esquire and they tend to program heavily in the summer, that is probably the main catalyst for keeping American Ninja Warrior in the summer.
ReplyDeleteIf so, I disagree but it's a matter of interpretation, then it only strengthens my original point that NBC needs to move on from Bear. There is no reward for the, reported, cost. A 1.2, which is its ceiling, is not nearly enough to be serviceable.

ReplyDeleteWhich would be Greenblatt's dream. Between I Can Do That doing well first night out and American Ninja Warrior's year to year growth, he is further encouraged to put more variety/sports on NBC. Like all networks, if viewers watch it, he'll give it to them.
ReplyDeleteIf Little Big Shots and Best Time Ever somehow manages to work, I'd expect a radically different direction for NBC (even more than we are seeing now). Oversaturation would be a concern, and that's where expanding what this category can be comes into play.
I wouldn't be surprised if it premiers around 0,3-0,4. I mean overall it depends on how they promote it and how the finale product will look like. I mean they still just have a half hour pilot. Overall I think this was a decision made out of the sudden.
ReplyDeleteThey should've moved iZombie to Mondays for a 13-16 ep run and air CrExGf after during midseason, before the voice starts and other shows loose steam. Containment to air instead of iZombie on Tuesdays, IMO.
I don't think it will be renewed especially if it does bad. CW has Jane and Reign as CBS shows and there is always BatB. Next show they could invest in a quality show that deserves to be picked up.
I'd imagine if a 1.2 was enough to renew Running Wild for a second season, any "reported cost" is overexaggerated.
ReplyDeleteBesides, like Hollywood Game Night, the "talent" on the show is just fulfilling their NBC appearance agreements for their project. It's all contractual. It's like putting them on the Today Show for an appearance.
I can't see NPH doing any good, especially after he bombed at the Oscars. Plus, it's not exactly getting a good time slot considering The Voice is fading fast and there's no guarantee Heartbreaker can pull in good numbers. Not to mention incompatibility.

ReplyDeleteIt's tough to judge Best Time Ever because no one really knows the format. It could be fun or it could be an hour of sheer torture. I think that it'll get sampled, much like The Jay Leno Show. But after that, who knows. One thing that I would suggest is to have great segments that doesn't rely on only him.
ReplyDeleteI also think there is legitimately something about certain shows simply being more appealing in the summer due to the themes and all. Big Brother is one of them and Ninja Warrior also seems like one of those to me so I think it could have taken an abnormal hit on the move to the winter and spring. Still, I very much doubt it would have been below 1.5 or so which would be amazing for the slot for NBC. But I am still not sure it would have been worth the risk since I dislike the idea on principle so much so I never talked about it that much anyway.

ReplyDeleteMost would decline for the simple principle that as we get further into the summer, available viewership is less.
ReplyDeleteWhat is odd though is that we found out this year and years before that moving a successful summer show to the fall or midseason does not really improve its chances of being a hit there. It will respond like it would in summer. Which to me suggests that summer shows get branded summer shows early on and that's their true value.
The CW is at the point where they can't be too picky, so I can see it get 0.3s and still renewed for maybe a summer run. That's assuming the network itself is renewed.

The Island held up ok - nothing too impressive there. Very nice performance for The Bachelorette as well. And CBS reran well across the board. So You Think You Can Dance is only around because FOX is in such a dire state.

ReplyDeleteI think that FOX keeps trying So You Think You Can Dance? because they want their own version of Dancing with the Stars or America's Got Talent and they think that if they find the right combination of judges, it will work.

I think it has more to do with them needing something to air. Other than Bones and Animation, their shows are lousy repeaters so they can't use CBS strategy of going heavy on repeats (and even CBS itself has been decreasing them). This year they only add 5Th Grader, Wayward Pines and Masterchef - three nights to cover all 4 weekdays (8 hours). So they need more reality cheap stuff to cover the rest, hence the green-lights of Boom and Bullseye, and the continued use of SYTYCD (which has the added benefit of filling in 2 hours at once).

ReplyDeleteNice quick overview. I enjoyed reading it. A DC network would be really neat. And Ur conception could work for the network. Fridays they could use to show old DC movies or shows and behind the scenes from movies and cast interviews.
ReplyDeleteThere is potential for sure. But here comes the big BUT! DC is already limiting their shows with character usage cause of their movies and that could be a breaking point in further development. I think most of CW's shows could find a 2nd home aka AbcF, Syfy and MTV if the network doesn't move along. At this point I don't think that CW will burn out, I predict they will announce in January that a new 5(max 10) year contract will be signed.
What would air Tuesdays at 9 during the winter though?
