Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this final Thursday in June, which included an 8-9 p.m. airing of part two of the season-premiere of summer favorite “Big Brother.” “Big Brother,” featuring the second set of eight houseguests competing this season (16 in total), scored a 4.0 rating/7 share in the household overnights. While that did trail an 8-9 p.m. edition of NBC’s competing “Dateline” (#1: 4.6/ 8) by 13 percent in the overnights, it is a lock for solid dominance in all the key young adult demographics and was on par with the year-ago telecast (which aired from from 9-10 p.m. on 6/26/14).
Comparably, this same overnight performance for “Big Brother” in the Wednesday 8 p.m. hour this week translated into 6.91 million viewers and a 2.1 rating/8 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. In other words, “Big Brother” is alive and well (and an immediate addiction). Next week, “Big Brother” moves back into the Thursday 9 p.m. hour (out of repeats of “The Big Bang Theory” and “Mom”).
Airing out of “Big Brother” was the two-hour season-premiere of scripted drama “Under the Dome” at a depressed 3.7/ 7 in the household overnights from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, this was 37 percent below the 5.9/10 for the year-ago opener (on Monday, June 30 at 10 p.m.). And that 5.9 overnight rating was already down by 36 percent from the series premiere on June 24, 2013 (9.2/15, also in the Monday 10 p.m. hour). While “Under the Dome” only dipped by five percent in the household overnights from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Big Brother” (3.9/ 7), retention in the key demo groups is certain to slip considerably. Stay tuned.
In series-premiere results, Fox game show “Boom!” was left at the starting gate with a distant fourth-place 1.6/ 3 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was 52 percent below “Hell’s Kitchen” on the year-ago evening (3.3/ 6 on 6/26/14). But lead-out “Wayward Pines” perked up to a third-place 2.5/ 4 from 9-10 p.m., which was 56 percent ahead of “Boom!” While certainly not a hit in the traditional sense, “Wayward Pines” does seem to have a cult following.
In week two news, drama “The Astronaut Wives Club” on ABC dropped to a 3.3/ 6 from 8-9 p.m., which was 21 percent below the 4.2/ 8 on the week-ago debut. And that 4.2 rating in the overnights translated into 5.51 million viewers and a 1.1 rating/5 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. That said, look for only about a 0.9 in the demo for “The Astronaut Wives Club” last night.
Next on sluggish the alphabet net was summer drama “Mistresses” at a depressed 2.6/ 5 (#2) from 9-10 p.m., which was down by 16 percent from the 3.1/ 6 for the two-hour season-premiere one week earlier. And perennial summer ABC occupant “Rookie Blue” kicked-off its new season with a 2.8/ 5 (#2) at 10 p.m., which was 26 percent below the 3.8/ 7 in the overnights for its two-hour year-ago season-opener (on 6/19/14).
Elsewhere, NBC drama “Aquarius” did not earn its second season renewal stripes with a 2.0/ 4 at 9 p.m., which was a series low. And it led into an also series-low 1.1/ 2 (#3) for just canceled “Hannibal,” which did deserve to be axed.
The CW capped off the night with struggling “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 0.8/ 1), which also should not be returning next season, and a repeat of “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 0.4/ 1). All in all, traditional ratings for the broadcast networks this summer are not too swift.

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Understatement of the century. "Elsewhere, NBC drama “Aquarius” did not earn its second season renewal stripes with a 2.0/ 4 at 9 p.m., which was a series low." (per Berman's early analysis). Not mentioned: Aquarius' performance was bested by repeat airings of reality television shows AGT and ANW.

ReplyDeleteI don't even watch BATB or Aquarius and I know saying this is pointless but I so wish Marc would keep is annoying as hell opinions to himself, or separate them at least.
Okay, I don't understand. Hannibal's fandom basically blew up with the news of the cancelation. People organized live tweeting on Twitter and Tumblr, many people joined in, made it trending. It loooked like a lot of people were coming back to watch live. So, what is this? I still haven't let it sink in, but I probably should get used to the idea that this is indeed the last of Hannibal.

ReplyDeleteAs for Boom, I'm not surprised it was DOA out of the gate. Walden/Newman keeps trying these "fun" game shows like Bullseye and Boom! and they are not resonating at all. They need a completely new direction for their reality shows and summer slate in particular because they are not doing well. Even once reliable So You Think You Can Dance hit the expected 0.9 mark.
Most social media campaigns are effective in gaining short span attention to fill white space on news outlets, etc. but, usually,have very little (if any) immediate positive results in ratings or long term effects.
ReplyDeleteAs for Hannibal's renewal chances: it's problem is that it is in a genre space where every available home has a similar project on roster or in development. Those projects are their priority, especially since they would not completely own Hannibal. This was said as much in the Amazon letter as they want to be involved in all projects from day one.

ReplyDeleteProbably. Not surprising at the large drop year to year though as social media was flooded with comments that they weren't returning to the show. It appears that it rang true in the ratings.

ReplyDeleteAnd that's what I typically glance over when reading TVMediaInsights as they tend to use stagnant opinion as fact.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, Aquarius did not deserve a renewal is a great example of a stagnant opinion masquerading as a fact as early on the opinion was taken that Aquarius would under no circumstance get a renewal. If we are going into the traditional live ratings sense, yes, he has a point and a decent argument. However, he completely discounted the real reason it was renewed, online revenue which is a segment that NBC is tapping into more. People watched it online and onDemand, advertisers were funneled through that way, upscale index of the audience skewed the ad rates, money was made to make Aquarius turn a profit, and it is now returning. It's very simple. It did "deserve" a renewal, it just wasn't the answer that he probably liked as it went against what he thought would happen. But this happens a lot as I read analysis like this from industry insiders frequently. Deadline is recently very guilty of PR articles (I already brought that up.)
Under the Dome looks okay. The episode was good though.

ReplyDeleteI thought Under the Dome would actually grow from BB in HH and then just skew older when the 18-49 came. Instead it only got a 3.7, a series low, so the demo might be really low.
Aquarius retention out of Dateline is really low.
Too bad!! Beauty and the Beast is getting stronger! It sure as heck tops some of those other ridiculous shows!! #BATB

ReplyDeleteWell none of those revenue sources allow Marc Berman to report their numbers before anyone else, so what good are they to him? TV and all media viewing are changing and making Berman less relevant. Plus once he gets an idea in his head about whether a show "deserves" to be renewed, he won't let it go.

ReplyDeleteEven if a fanbase is loud, even if a fanbase is strong you ALWAYS have to remind yourself that this fanbase is scrambled ALL OVER THE GLOBE.
ReplyDeleteTo NBC only US ratings matter, so you pretty much have to cross 60% of the fandom off your list. Added to that of the remaining 40% only 15% will own a Nielsen box.
It's always kind of enraging to hear people consider a fan campaign to be more relevant than it is. It shows support and it shows that there is interest but it can't undo a decision based on millions upon millions of bucks.
People can cry, people can shout but violent fan campaigns never saved a show.

ReplyDeleteFunny thing is Walden and Newman, they so called genius of broad programming are still riding Reilly's late success (Gotham, Empire, even Wayward Pines mediocre ratings are better than Bullseye, 5th Grader and Boom).
ReplyDeleteAnd their only chance to change it is Scream Queens, since FOX schedule is atrocious, if Empire is hit by a sophomore slump and they fail to develop any timeslot hit out of it, FOX scripted department will be worse than NBC's.

ReplyDeleteABC did terribly. Glad to see Wayward Pines at 1.2 despite Boom! being lower than Bones - but actually not that bad for a cheap game show on Fox summer, it tied So You Think You Can Dance and it's certainly way cheaper.
Big Brother did amazingly well, kuddos!
It's not about undoing a decision. This should've proved that Hannibal fans are watching and the show is worth picking up (for another network/carrier). Obviously, that didn't happen.

ReplyDeleteThere is no such thing as mini series, only limited count of episodes; if a show is sucessful it'll be renewed no matter what the networks says.
Examples: UTD, The Bibled (moved to NBC), Aquarius just recently, among many others
Any thing "CAN" be renewed. It "CAN" be cancelled too.

Besides, unless Zoo breaks out (which I hope for), I think this will probably still be the summer's highest rated scripted show from all the networks - which does say more about the poor state of the it all than Dome itself, but still.

ReplyDeleteRemember that Elementary has the biggest syndication package of all time backing it up. UTD may be backed up by Amazon, but it is not nearly as safe as the Elementary package.
ReplyDeleteI do agree this is not a disaster, but it is not promising either. If it doesn't fall dramatically it should be renewed, but it is certainly disappointing.
I'm not, they've been promoting the hell out of it on ABC and ABC Family. I haven't seen much for the other too. Regardless, though numbers are very low, I would have expected at least Mistresses to hold in the 0.8-0.9 range.

ReplyDeleteOh, I wasn't arguing about which show was more profitable, of course, just saying that CBS is keeping Elementary there without needing to. They could have moved it to the weekends and tried something else on the slot. They tolerate the ratings there and they don't have to. So I think they are fine with Dome as well. The problem is if it falls too much from the premiere, as it did last year. I will hope it won't happen.

ReplyDelete#BATB is one of my favorite shows on TV and I am loving season 3. We are watching the 3rd season and the actors and crew are filming season 4 as we speak. So to all the #BATB fandoms out there Congratulations! enjoy S3 and S4 Fortunately the show has huge ratings internationally and staying solid in US and Mark Pedowitch has already stated publicly that the show is profitable and going no where. I doubt the show will get a S5 but I think the fans are happy with 4 seasons. Never heard of this Marc Early guy or know anything about his rating and have no intention of finding out. The show is on CW every Thursday night and I for one will be tuning in for SE and S4. I feel bad for the fans of other cancelled series and its unfortunate when new shows get cancelled. I think in the next few years ratings will be a thing of the past because people are NOT tuning in for new shows any more and like myself wait until it has 2 or 3 seasons before committing to it on Netflix. I think most of us have been disappointed when a show is cancelled and left in limbo. I think we should all respect each others likes and dislikes and it would be a boring place if everyone had the same likes and dislikes.
