Ratings Breakdown:
The 2015 U.S. Golf Championship led Fox to victory on this third Sunday in June, with a 6.2 rating/12 share in the household overnights from 7-10:30 p.m.
In series-premiere news, reality/competition “BattleBots” on ABC opened with a modest 3.0/ 5 in the 9 p.m. hour, which was 43 percent below the 8:30 p.m. portion of the debut of lead-in “Celebrity Family Feud” (5.3/10). Overall, “Celebrity Family Feud” was on the map with a solid 5.3/10 (#2) from 8-9 p.m., which was a hefty 61 percent above the debut of failed singing competition “Rising Star” on the year-ago evening (3.3/ 5 on 6/22/14). “BattleBots,” meanwhile, was 20 percent above year-ago time period occupant “Wipeout” (2.5/ 4 on 6/22/14).
A 10 p.m. encore telecast of ABC’s “Castle” dropped to a 1.8/ 3 (#3), which was still 12 percent above the 1.6/ 3 for competing “American Odyssey” on NBC. And a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” opened the night for ABC with a 2.3/ 5 (#3) from 7-8 p.m. Comparably, aforementioned “Celebrity Family Feud” built from the “AFHV” encore by 130 percent.
Also on NBC last night were two episodes of “Dateline” (7 p.m.: #4: 2.2/ 4; 8 p.m.: #3, 2.3/ 4) into another lackluster performance for an original installment of “A.D. The Bible Continues” (#3: 2.4/ 4 at 10 p.m.). And CBS capped off the night with encore telecasts of “60 Minutes” (#2: 4.5/ 9), “Madam Secretary” (#3: 2.8/ 5), “The Good Wife” (#4: 2.0/ 4) and “CSI” (#2, 2.7/ 5), which will officially conclude with a two-hour telecast with original stars William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger on Sunday, Sept. 27.

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteCelebrity Family Feud opened well but it would have been very surprising if it flopped.
ReplyDeleteDecent start to Celebrity Family Feud, but it'll probably skew very old. BattleBots tanked though, as those ratings are way below expectations. Just like Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, BattleBots was a revival that no one was asking for.
ReplyDeleteIt will just add more fuel to the idea that the only thing viewers are willing to watch is well established reality franchises. Everyone knows Family Feud, so there wasn't hesitation to watch it in the summer.

ReplyDeleteI'm more intrigued by HBO's ratings for its 2 new shows and True Detective. Going to be interesting to see if TD keeps its good ratings from S1 or if the new story and new cast effects it in anyway.

ReplyDeleteAlso where are the ratings for Friday? I know its summer but it seems reporting by various sites is really getting slow for ratings. I'm intrigued by the Sy Fy shows especially Killjoys debut.

ReplyDeleteI just did a bit of searching and it seems like its been delayed to 2016, with people also wondering what will air in the Fall with the Leftovers. I had forgotten just how many HBO shows ended last year (True Blood, Newsroom, Boardwalk). They have gaps.

ReplyDeleteBut Friday broadcast ratings don't get post cause from scripted shows it's only the Messengers which did an 0,3 this Friday. But the broadcast numbers will be included in the final numbers.
ReplyDeleteTogetherness aired with Girls and Looking, a very low rated Sunday night for HBO. They really need more dramas which tend to do better for them.
ReplyDeleteLooking at what upcoming shows they have, they a couple of mini-series 'Show Me A Hero' which starts in August and will be finished by the end of Sept. 'Codes of Conduct' which is 6 parts I guess could air in the Fall. 'Crime' which has been in development for a while but I've heard nothing about in ages. Plus a load of new comedies which only got picked up this year so I doubt they would be ready.
Yes I like the sound of it as well and would likely try it out! Winter is not a bad time for me though. A lot of my shows are on hiatus or actually over (Homeland, The Affair, American Horror Story), so I don't mind it coming by then. Fall is too crowded for me although spring is by far the worse.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the recent analysis seems to be a sliding scale bias based on what the, said, individual enjoys watching (or doesn't). Many times, for example, NBC is praised for the same demo as a FOX or ABC show which is disastrous.
ReplyDeleteAh that's true, thanks. Yeah from the looks of it, it looks like they will be stalling with those mini series but at some point they will probably need a permanent fixture there. The Leftovers did okay actually when it was on (way better than I thought a nice show like that one would be able to do) and had a nice spike for the finale but I am not sure it can be their fall anchor. Then again, Broadwalk Empire was always modest and they were seemingly content on having it with that role.
ReplyDeleteThere were expectations for BattleBots? And here I thought it was just such obvious cheap summer filler crap that I was barely convinced it wasn't a total joke.
ReplyDeleteNot really sure I get your point or the pertinence to what I was asking but in general, it makes sense to judge the networks with different standards. NBC is a much weaker network scripted wise than ABC for instance. Their top dramas (Chicago Fire, Blacklist) gather ratings that are usually only on par with ABC's 5th drama. And of course their comedies gather ratings that are often lower then repeats of ABC comedies. So it makes sense to judge them with different standards, if that was what you were trying to argue against.

ReplyDeleteI'll clarify... it's a simple, general statement ( not directed to any individual) to the trend recently in the ratings thread that instead of analysis of the actual results, bias and agenda seem to be introduced to be combative or unintentionally contradictory. As for comparing in different standards, that only works if it is based on a standardized comparing scale, which is what I am noticing is increasingly absent. Just an observation.

ReplyDeleteIt pulled a 3.0/5 in HHs. That's a low premiere, even in summer. Unless we are expecting it to skew young, we're likely looking at a 1.1ish premire, again low for summer. And that's a premiere, so ratings will likely fall in the coming weeks (but since I don't want to get into forecasting, we'll leave that alone). TVMediaInsights labeled it as "modest" without ratings based on HHs and I think that's putting it midly. You get a rhythm seeing ratings for how things shake out that all of the information doesn't have to be displayed yet to know if it did well or not (or performed at expectations or under it).
ReplyDeleteAs for bias, that's just a tangent for provoking when none is warranted, so I'll skip it. It's off topic. As for expectations, every network has expectations. This wasn't a burnoff, this was a revival that was highly publicized as ABC thought that people were still interested in it. From the initial data, they weren't, hence my comment.
Billions sounds good and I'll probably watch it. Definitely not excited for it though.

ReplyDeleteAs for the second, it just got a super good 1.9, so it was definitely a successful premiere, hence my comment about you lacking the information to talk earlier being correct.
Those are amazing results for both ABC shows.

ReplyDeleteYes, BattleBots luckily skewed young with a 40% 18 to 49 skew. If it holds for two hours, it's more promising. If it did the traditional 20% skew, you'd be looking at more 1.1ish, which is what I and likely TVMediaInsights predicted.
ReplyDeleteThat, in itself, is a problem though. But the bad news about this is that this won't really propel them to try out more scripted stuff in the summer. I mean why would they? Way more expensive and get way lower ratings.

ReplyDeleteI think it's best if ABC tries a 50-50, or a 60-40 ratio of scripted and unscripted programming, oversaturation is never a good thing. I'd love to see a summer filled with scripted programming, but it seems its best to have a little bit of both, unscripted show can easily fail as well, we've seen that happen countless times, so I think the safest approach is to have a bit of both and look out for shows that could eventually work

They kind of have a balanced schedule right now in terms of unscripted-scripted-repeats. However, and going for your argument, I think the big difference is that when an unscripted show fails, the financial loss is substantially lower than when a scripted show does not make it.

ReplyDeleteYou kind of mentioned a viewpoint that I've held for a while, it doesn't make sense to program scripted in the summer unless they perform much higher than the typical unscripted show and if that happens, why place it in the summer? They need all the help they can get during the regular season.
ReplyDeleteNetworks would love to have scripted programming in the summer, but the safest and best play is to keep it unscripted, deal with the lower viewership levels, and use the unscripted franchises to launch their promising and more expensive scripted material.
I thought the first episode was great but never watched any firther after the ratingd for the premiere came in.

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know the bar for a renewal on WGN America? I'd imagine that if they wanted to keep it going to say that they have original programming, nothing is stopping them as they are lower tier subscription based. But the ratings have been really low for Salem which indicates that perhaps this isn't the direction WGN America should be going in.

ReplyDeleteI think it was an unrelated jab towards someone else masked as "ratings discussion/analysis." Hence, my earlier comment about other "factors" unnecessarily entering the equation. I can confirm though that no one, here, accused a specific person of bias, so I am equally puzzled.
