The Liars are kidnapped by A and Ezra and Caleb try to locate them. Andrew listens in on Veronica Hastings' phone conversation to Melissa, having previously hinted to Aria that the world was better off without Mona. The Liars are placed inside a dollhouse with exact replicas of their bedrooms and cameras watching them. Peter and Veronica Hastings go to Toby, Ezra and Caleb and tell them they know about A, who find out from Alison. Mona is alive and kept in the dollhouse, having pretended to be Alison, she shows the girls the faults with the system. Spencer tells the girls A's name - Charles. Charles forces the girls to recreate their Prom. Caleb helps the police find the van, which is found at the old Campbell Farm but nobody is there. Tanner sees on the monitors inside of the girls trapped. The girls trick Charles for a moment while they try to escape. During the fiasco, Spencer watches a video with Jessica DiLaurentis and two blonde-haired boys giving baby Alison a kiss.
'GAME ON, CHARLES' REVIEW
Oh wow. By some miracle, Pretty Little Liars has managed to find a way to reboot in a way that makes the show pretty exciting again. By reboot I mean they've opened up so many possibilities that the show can go down now as we head deeper into the penultimate season. It's a hard feat for a show that started to go downhill before heading into a whopping sixth season, but Pretty Little Liars has done the impossible. I just hope it's sustainable throughout the next 9 episodes. On to my review:
I was wondering what the first scene Janel Parrish was talking about when she said it would be the most shocking and we'd see something from the finale in a different angle without thinking about it. She was right as I wasn't expecting there to be another girl trapped in the dollhouse, let alone Sara Harvey who went missing two years before! Poor girl, she would have been forced to play Alison for 2 whole years before Mona came along. With Mona put in the hole before the real Alison would make her debut at the dollhouse, no doubt that's what Charles made Sara do when Mona showed up which explains why Sara looked so wild. I thought she was Bethany Young at first because we saw that photo of the actress on Instagram but I realised later on that it was Sara. I'm really glad the premiere began just moments before the finale ended with the girls running out of the dollhouse and into the area with the big fence as it was a great moment to end last season and a great moment to start this one.
"You may be a dude, but you're still a bitch!"
One of the things I was anticipating before season six started was "how is Charles going to react to the girls' betrayal?" Well that was answered pretty quickly as he locks them out in the freezing cold - thunder and lightning and torrential rain. It was an awful punishment. It's also weird how Spencer would say Charles felt like a pen-pal from when they were little. Charles has to be someone close to them for Spencer to think that and must have something to do with their childhood. Anyway it was a great scene to have the girls huddle close together during all this and contemplate how long it takes to die from starvation. They're outside for 2 nights before Charles lets them back in. My crazy paranoid mind thought Mona was in on it when Charles smoke-bombed the place and Mona just stood their screaming before Charles grabbed hold of her. It seemed fishy to me but that theory was debunked by episode's end.
And just how creepy was it when the girls were lying like bodies in the morgue? That was so messed up and for a second I was like "nooo" but Spencer thinking that the whole purpose of it was to make them look dead so their families wouldn't look for them chilled me to the bone. I wish we saw the families and what they were going through during the three weeks the girls were gone. They still might do that in flashbacks, or they'll tell the girls what happened while they were away. It was a little funny when Mona came in with the trolley as it reminded me of Harry Potter on the Hogwarts Express - "anything off the trolley dears?" - and Mona was acting weirder than usual. Turns out she paid a visit to the hole, which is something even I wouldn't want to experience. This season has already elevated the darkness that was present in the end of season 5 and cranked it right up to ultimate.
IS ANDREW REALLY A?
The time jump of three weeks is perfect. It allows enough time for us to ask questions about what happened during that time, and it wasn't too long of a jump to take away from the girls' current situation. I'm glad we got to see Alison in this role she had in this episode as she tried to find the girls and worked with the police (and against them) to do whatever it takes the locate the girls. My feelings for Alison weren't the best last season overall but she appears to be turning over a new leaf and has realised how much the girls mean to her. I was taken back by how insistent the police and media were of Andrew being the main suspect. I'm not sure he is. His journal article was messed up, to say the least, but there's no way he's Charles or Uber A. The reveal will be a surprise to us so they wouldn't reveal it to be Andrew this early in the season and we won't find out until episode 10. It does make me wonder what Andrew has been up to and where he is now.
The When a Stranger Calls moment in Alison's house was good and it was better to know that the whole thing was set up by Alison, Ezra, Caleb and Toby to throw the police off their scent. It was clever of them to use the "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" song to make them go to Campbell Farm while Alison had planted hints in her emotional plea to Andrew about where she wants to meet him. I didn't get those hints myself until she revealed it and I can't be the only one, right? It wasn't the most obvious but when she did say "lost in the woods" my paranoid mind overworked again and thought Alison knew where the girls were anyway and was maybe in on it. I know, I'm just as crazy as the people in Rosewood. My bad. Anyway I didn't think it would be so easy for Alison to trick Andrew, but it definitely worked which I liked actually because the pacing was quite fast in this episode.
When we go back to the girls and they see each other for the first time in weeks as they'd been locked up in their rooms (or taken to other places too I'd imagine), I was really shaking myself. Watching the girls and seeing how emotionally battered they were was quite heartbreaking. It was good too because it opens up so many questions about what happened and it makes me that much more interested in seeing where season six goes. I also love how Charles sort of time-warped them by making them look like their former selves, especially Aria's pink highlights. The scene worked so well as most of it was emphasised by what wasn't said, adding a whole new layer on a messed up situation. The arrival of Alison was an exciting prospect and I would have loved to have seen what Alison would have been like in the dollhouse. It added a new layer of terror too when we realise that Charles won't need Mona anymore. It was so sad when Mona was in the hole and Charles came and she was begging with him. Janel has solidified herself as a genuinely great actress in this episode.
THE GIRLS ARE SAVED!
From the moment Alison got back in her car and was instructed to drive, I knew this premiere would end with awesomeness. I honestly didn't think Alison's plan would work but it ended up working out too well. I thought when Caleb and Ezra followed Alison into the woods that they would give it away and ruin any chance of saving the girls, but the Liars timed the fire so brilliantly that it ended up saving them. I loved Spencer taking the girls into Charles' room of memories and then started to torch the place. Game on, Charles! Love that. Literally their timing could not have been more perfect as Caleb, Ezra and Alison heard the alarm and saw the smoke, leading to the much-anticipated reunions of the Liars with their loved ones. I honestly thought the girls would be trapped in the dollhouse for much longer as I. Marlene King suggested, but I'm guessing what she meant was that the ramifications of the dollhouse storyline will last a while. This means PTSD I am sure as the girls will not recover from their ordeal that easy!
EPISODE VERDICT
A stellar premiere. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt it was a better premiere than the last two seasons. Season six is off to a terrific start already and it makes me so excited to watch more. I'm a little worried too though because usually premieres end up being bigger than the follow-up episodes can handle, but with so many new questions buzzing around and the prospect of the dollhouse-saga having huge ramifications, my worry kind of melts away. This episode was filled with great moments - both terrifying and satisfying - and showed the girls really start to take control and fight back. Let's see what the future brings for our pretty little liars.
As a sort-of-related note, I haven't stopped listening to Natasha Bedingfield's song "Unwritten" since the season five finale. Just love it.
EPISODE AWARDS
Prettiest Little Liar: Alison DiLaurentis. She didn't win this award at all last season and I would have given this to Spencer as she was brilliant in the dollhouse in furthering the girls to freedom, but Alison went out of her way to help the girls.
Most Macho Male: It's a tie with Ezra and Caleb, both joined at the hip in this episode to save the girls.
Biggest Asshole: Andrew. Even though we don't physically see him in this episode, what he wrote about the girls in his journal was messed up!
Favourite Episode Pairing: Caleb and Ezra.
Best Line: "You may be a dude, but you're still a bitch." - Hanna to Charles.
Funniest Line: "Is there anything you can recognise? A smell?" - Mona. "She's not Jenna." - Emily.
Best Moment: The girls set the room alight with Charles' memories in. Wicked move.
Saddest Moment: The girls getting out after three weeks and seeing each other for the first time, shaking.
Creepiest Moment: Aria and Spencer read a note from Mona, saying "He's Going to Kill Me - M" and we see Mona in the hole.
Biggest Question Mark Award: What the hell did Charles do to the girls in those three weeks?
Biggest ReveAl: Sara Harvey has been the replacement Alison for the last 2 years since she went missing - which is crAzy!
A's Mysteries
WHO IS CHARLES?
We got some more tidbit information about Charles in this episode, though not an awful lot that we will crack the case straight away. Spencer mentioned how familiar Charles felt, like they were pen-pals from when they were little. That's an odd thing to come up with but it must have some meaning that Charles is closer to the girls than we think and possibly rooted to their childhood.
WERE THERE TWO A'S IN THE DOLLHOUSE?
There was one behind the glass in the room of memories and one in the control room watching between Alison and the girls. I thought it was just a mannequin behind the glass but he had to be the one to turn the sprinklers on right because the next moment he was gone.
What did you think of the season six premiere, 'Game On, Charles'? Let me know your thoughts on the episode in the comments and be sure to watch the next new episode on June 9 on ABC Family!
Was it one of the best premieres Pretty Little Liars has ever had? I loved it and I hope you guys join me for the rollercoaster ride that will be the penultimate season of the show.
ReplyDeleteIn a nutshell-I loved every moment of it.Old PLL is back and i couldn't be happier :-)
ReplyDeleteA great episode and an even better review ;)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the rest of this season.
It was by far the best premiere. So intriguing and interesting. Can't wait for more!
ReplyDeleteI kinda gave up on the show mid-way through season 4 but have been kinda-sorta keeping tabs on it. Thanks for this review though, it does make me want to catch up because it sounds like a great premiere. Maybe in a few weeks I will start the series over from the pilot and just watch straight through, by then the first half of season 6 should be over. Hopefully it can recapture a little bit of the magic for me. (Although if the show realllly wants to win me back over they'll have one more Ravenswood episode goddammit!)
ReplyDeleteYes! So happy to share those thoughts with someone else. I am so relieved too because I was starting to miss this show. Roll on season six!
ReplyDeleteAww thanks! I'll be here all season ;) This season is gonna be awesome!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought - out of all the premieres, it's been the one that's really made me want to see more. So many awesome things have been set up going forward. Really looking forward to more :D Thanks for commenting!
ReplyDeleteNo problem :)
ReplyDeleteRavenswood was beyond horrible IMO.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't blame you for giving up on PLL as I was seriously considering it about early season 5 myself, then I got the reviewing gig for it on here when someone left and I thought "why not". So glad I did because the end of season 5 turned the show around and now season 6 promises to be so good. Let me know if you do decide to catch up as I'd love to know your thoughts on the series so far :D
ReplyDeleteI unfortunately have to agree. I did not like it and I really wanted to :(
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that I kept watching. I watched the first few episode of season 5 and considered to stop watching but I'm glad I didn't.
ReplyDeleteOMG the episode was the fu*king best, completly amazing, best of the series for me. Loved every minute of it. I loved how they all got closer to Mona, like holding her hand or risking their "lives" in a way to save her and all. Destroying A´s soul room was a perfect plan and kind of a payback, they were smart for once in a very very long time. Ali did a fantastic job trying to save the girls risking to be captured by A, but she kinda owed it to the girls. The Big reveal wasn´t a reveal bc everyone knew Charles was a dylarentis, but it´s good that the girls know now. Gonna miss the dollhouse, it was creepy and very intriguing and perfect hehe Very intrigued to find out what A did to them in those 3 weeks and beautiful Spoby scene at the end, it´s the ship I like the most in the series. Best line for me is Spencer´s: Game on, Charles. So, A only wanted Sarah for her to pretend to be Ali for him or what? Can´t wait to figure out all the A answers this season, can´t wait!!! Great review BTW
ReplyDeleteI agree.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe i watched all 10 episodes hoping it would magically improve. It didn't,the show became worse as it progressed.
ReplyDeleteGlad it wasn't just me then. I did find season four to be okay but then season 5 started and I was like "where is this show even going?" but season 6 has started off with a purpose, a goal, so it's made me re-excited in the show again :D
ReplyDeleteThe finale was alright but wasn't worth the 10 hours of my life I put into the show. It just felt so wrong to be in the world of PLL by making it far too ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteSpoby is my fav ship too,i adore them.I also want to know what exactly happened in those 3 weeks!
ReplyDeleteThe idea of the dollhouse gave the show a fresh start and bought the show back to its glory days.
ReplyDeleteIf I could choose 10 more episodes of RW or an actual resolution to PLL I'd choose RW. The last two or three eps in particular were GREAT.
ReplyDeleteMy only issue with the show was the actual series did not portray the town as being as weird as they did on PLL (for instance, the town gathering at the angel in the graveyard).
Plus the way they wrote it was MUCH better. PLL's approach, start the mystery, just keep piling on more questions, give an answer, then reveal the answer was just a red herring. Ravenswood set up the central mystery and gave you solid clues and answers along the way, every episode you learned a little bit more about what was going on, and while that naturally led to occasional new questions they were a lot better about answering them fairly quickly.
I almost gave up during Episode 15-19 of Season 5.
ReplyDeleteI loved episodes 9 and 10 so much.
ReplyDeleteIt´s just that anything related to Spencer, I love. She´s the BEST hehe
ReplyDeleteI expect ABC Family will have another shot at producing another Pretty Little Liars spin-off before the end of season 7.
ReplyDeleteYay thanks for reading and commenting! I've missed our PLL chats :D Aww at the end when Spencer was hugging Mona before Toby came, I was so touched. Ali really did owe it to the girls but it restores my faith in her to see her actually risk her life to do that. I hope all the girls are better and stronger than ever now, more united against A.
ReplyDeleteR.I.P. Dollhouse. You were great while you lasted :( Yeah Charles just wanted Sarah to be Ali until Mona came along and then the real Alison. Sick and twisted!
Totally my favourite too!
ReplyDeleteABCF is actually moving away from PLL type of shows.First step towards that were Chasing Life,Now Stitchers.
ReplyDeleteHaleb is my fav ship but Spoby is 2nd. They started to slip last season with the whole police stuff and never getting to see each other and stuff but after this premiere, I think they're going to go back on track which I cannot wait to see :D
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, the Dollhouse reinvigorated the show which was very much needed after an overall dry fifth season. Couldn't have said it better myself :)
ReplyDeleteIt got really slow in the middle of 5A and 5B, like the eps you mentioned, then picked up again before the mid-season finale and season finale. I hope season 6 will be more consistent.
ReplyDeleteI actually loved that they established that the supernatural exists in the universe of PLL but doesn't really factor into the actual mythology of the show. I know it bothered some people because they were worried the supernatural would start playing into the A story but I never interpreted it as that at all. More like, ghosts COULD exist in our world and maybe one of your neighbors is experiencing it, doesn't mean it factors into YOUR life story. So few shows have done that, they either exist in a world where the supernatural does not exist or the supernatural factors heavily into the story.
ReplyDeleteAnd I looove Chasing Life. Gonna check out Stitchers.
ReplyDeleteSo Ravenswood was more to play with the idea of that hinted supernatural feel of PLL, as I do have to admit, sometimes PLL does flirt with that line between the natural and supernatural. I still wanted better characters in Ravenswood as I didn't end up feeling connected to them.
ReplyDeleteHow to make an entrance.
ReplyDeleteThe only supernatural thing in the world of PLL is the fact that most of the times, A disappears into the thin air haha
ReplyDeleteThese two are not my cup of tea but i makes me happy see both are getting good reviews.
ReplyDeleteI do want ABC Family to do well, so me too. As long as they can produce quality programming and get a good critical reaction from then, then that's always good. I hope PLL won't be their last true hit show.
ReplyDeleteHahaha that's actually very true. Like how the hell?!
ReplyDeleteActually the showrunner has confirmed Haleb will get affected the most this season,Spoby will trade some rough waters due to this dollhouse PTSD phenomemon. Thanks Charles.Grrrr!!
ReplyDeleteShe is,isn't she?I love her!
ReplyDeleteThe rough waters are needed to make the relationship interesting haha
ReplyDeleteEven Caleb didn't seem the likeable person he is in PLL. I felt there was too many cheap scares and been-there-done-that ghost chills that PLL has also done to death (having the girls alone in a dark room and a noise sounds for instance) and no characterisation. I've already forgotten all their names except Miranda, and it was cool how she died in the premiere, but still didn't end up caring for any of them.
ReplyDeleteI know.No drama,no show-Right?LOL!
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree, it will make for a very interesting season with the whole ramifications of the dollhouse having a ripple effect on the girls' relationships. I'm sure they'll overcome everything by the end of the show and live happily ever after :P
ReplyDeleteLOVE that! Haha cannot WAIT for this! I can't tell you how overjoyed I am that Mona is alive after all. I don't care if the show jumped the shark, I just wanted her not dead.
ReplyDeleteCaleb is really a great person & Perfect hubby material.I'm a guy & i'm actually jealous of Hannah. That girl is so lucky!LOL!
ReplyDeleteI actually hate all this resurrection twists off late, especially on CW shows but in this case,i didn't mind.Mona is awesome, she's too good to stay dead for good!
ReplyDeleteHehe talking about my Delena experience, so I recommend it to any ship, it´s my opinion :P
ReplyDeleteSpencer>Aria>Emily>Hanna or Spencer>Aria>Hanna>Emily, depends on the episode/season, for me
ReplyDeleteYeah I share the same feelings. I am sick to death of Vampire Diaries resurrecting basically every character over and over, totally takes away from any impact that the deaths have in the show. I then start to wish they would just die and stay dead and I don't want to have to do that as I end up feeling horrible about myself. But yes, CW shows need to learn to keep their characters dead. Mona is literally my only exception.
ReplyDeleteHey,we share love for many ships together baring Delena. So,we're good.
ReplyDeleteSometimes Aria can end up being my least favourite as her storylines usually depend on her and Ezra, but I quite liked her independence late last season so I've really started liking her more. It's so awful putting a character last when all of them are great, but yes Spencer definitely first!
ReplyDeleteSpencer>Hanna>Aria>Emily.
ReplyDeleteI don´t mind it at all when the resurrections fit into the world they´ve created on the show and fits the story, all TVD resurrections are well explained and executed
ReplyDeleteHaha she really is! He's literally the ideal guy. Not perfect but that's what makes him so realistic and even more appealing.
ReplyDeleteAnother Resurrection i didn't mind-Enzo of TVD.I know everyone hates him but i love him.Always have.
ReplyDeleteI binge-watched the first 4 seasons last year and then I was too bored watching season 5 that I just watched the episodes whenever so this is the first time I'm reading your reviews of it :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in the minority though because I thought the episode was fairly boring, I still enjoyed it more than most S5 episodes though. It was certainly darker but they skipped over a lot of the dark parts was what I didn't like. I hope we see it in flashbacks or something. I'm still looking forward to the rest of the season especially the emotional aftermath of what the girls went through, and of course, answers!
And the actress, Troian, totally delivers. Final eps of S3 and S4, she totally rocks with her performances, wow
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, it's totally believable on Vampire Diaries, but when someone dies and then come back and dies and comes back, I stop caring. I don't want to stop caring but when they die I don't feel anything anymore. I just end up wanting them to stay dead. I loved Bonnie first few seasons but when she died first time, I was devastated, then she came back and I was like that's good, but then she stayed on the other side didn't she and now she's back and I'm like ugh!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen all of season 6 yet but I have heard about what's happened and stuff. I'm not sure how to feel about him actually. He's been great to hate, I love hating him, but he might have improved in season 6 so now I don't know what to feel. I'd better catch up.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! And in this episode, when she saw the girls starting to break down over the news that their families might be giving up hope - the look she gives them and her need to fix the situation and her broken voice - just perfect acting!
ReplyDeleteI want to know what happened in the 3 weeks that were unaccounted for.
ReplyDeleteThanks for deciding to check out my PLL review! Hope you come back for more, even if you didn't enjoy the episode as much as other people did, I love and respect all opinions.
ReplyDeleteI think the parts they skipped will definitely be revealed to us. The girls are going to suffer hard from PTSD. It's gonna make the show so complex and they're gonna have to rely on acting and characterisation to pull this big storyline off. It's the Summer of Answers so we will definitely be getting answers ;)
In the case of TVD, I don´t mind them bc I think they fit so well the story, it´s not that they bring the characters back for any reason, there´s always a consecuence and a meaning, with Bonnie for example, she "died" in 2x18 to make Klaus believe she was dead and take advantage of it, she died in 4x22 to bring Jeremy back, she "came back" in 5x07 but being the anchor and with that they could prevent it from collapsing, she "died" in 5x22 and bc of a reason I think, but I´m not going to tell bc u haven´t seen S6 yet haha
ReplyDeleteIt's what's going to keep people coming back for the rest of season 6, I'm sure ;)
ReplyDeleteHasn't the term "season of answers" been used for every season after season 2 because it feels like it has.
ReplyDeleteSame, if they don't show flashbacks for that I think they'll definitely talk about it, either way the acting will need to be very good for those scenes and I hope it is.
ReplyDeleteI think those missing pieces will be revealed throughput the first 10 episodes.
ReplyDeleteHaha keep some mystery to S6 ;) I might just be over-reacting because I haven't watched the show since the S6 premiere and that was after S5 which I didn't like so I need to give the show a chance. The deaths and resurrections do have a point in VD, I would like them to tone it back a bit as the shock factor has totally gone now.
ReplyDeleteThe girls are going to have to bring their A game for this!
ReplyDeleteThat´s your opinion and I respect it, but hey, TVD is my favourite show of all time and I´ll defend anything about it till the end of times hahaha
ReplyDeleteHaha not exactly, at least not as explicitly as this season. We've always been told we'll get some answers - I mean the season 4 finale was called A is for Answers but we will get the answer of who Charles is in the first 10 episodes and other mysteries that we need solving. Plus this is the penultimate season, answers are bound to be given to us now ;)
ReplyDeleteYou'll definitely get shocked during 6.21 & 6.22-It's pretty brutal.
ReplyDeleteHaha I respect that too. I love your passion for the show. If you knew how obsessed I was back in the S1-S2 days, I think you'd love me haha.
ReplyDeleteHow do you think the show will end?
ReplyDeleteAnd heart-breaking, still not over it, I never will
ReplyDeleteI heard there's a wedding but that's about all I've heard. I don't even know how Nina Dobrev leaves! I'm avoiding that spoiler for sure.
ReplyDeleteI heard a rumor that Aria was going to be pregnant with Ezra's baby.
ReplyDeleteOne wedding.A couple of major deaths. One couple moving out of town for good.
ReplyDeleteS2 was pure epicness, nothing will top that. For me it goes 2>6>4>3>5>1
ReplyDeleteThat's such a tough question. I think the show will end with the girls finding out who Uber A is but by this time, their lives are forever changed by what's already happened and they'll be haunted by A for the rest of their lives (not literally, just mentally and emotionally) even if they do get their happy endings. Nobody human could get over what these girls have gone through.
ReplyDeleteOh I'll definitely be back :) The acting for me has been up and down on the show, I think Troian is the only one who's acting I've always liked, so I hope it's an up this season for all of them.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLol 'A game' ;)
ReplyDeleteGosh that's a big one. Don't know how credible that rumour is but I guess it could happen, don't know if I want it to though. Pregnancy is not something I want for my Liars.
ReplyDeletehahaha I don´t support that at all either
ReplyDeleteThey'll all definitely have to deliver on this and Troian is for sure the most capable, I totally agree. I think the others are too if they really try and I'm sure they will. Gotta have faith in our Liars :D
ReplyDeleteHaha I saw the opportunity for a pun and I took it :P
ReplyDeleteI agree too.Troian is the best among the, for sure.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ibtimes.co.uk/pretty-little-liars-season-6-aria-pregnant-ezras-baby-spencer-toby-may-unmask-charles-1497235. Here's the link (It's not the best source).
ReplyDeleteI think she must have more experience than the others, maybe? I only really knew Ashley Benson from Eastwick beforehand and Lucy Hale from Wizards of Waverly Place. Shay Mitchell was totally new to me when I started the show, as were Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish. Janel was fantastic in this episode though when she was screaming from within the well.
ReplyDeleteFor series finale,i'll accept it,Before that,no way in hell/heaven/earth.
ReplyDeleteI like the "episode awards" part of your review. Nice edition! I 100% agree with you on the best line, made me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteI like that Spencer will be the first to see Charles unmasked - she deserves it. She's done so much to find out who he is. Other than that it just seems like speculation for the baby, but who knows?
ReplyDeleteAwesome episode !! Loved every second of it.
ReplyDeleteSPOILER BELOW READ AT OWN RISK
In what episode is the 4 year time jump suppose to happen in ?
Yeah we can have a 10 year time jump at the very end to see how the lives of the girls has went since the A fiasco is over. But I don't want to see the girls become mothers before then.
ReplyDeleteIf they did do a pregnancy, I'd rather they did that as a flash forward on the final episode of the show.
ReplyDeleteI love it when shows end with big time jumps so that we can see how the characters end up
ReplyDeleteI actually knew absolutely nothing about these cast before PLL.Spencer & Emily won me over from Day one.Hannah is a bit naive for me.I never got Aria's appeal in the first place.
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks so much! When I took over writing for PLL on this site for 5B, I tried to think of a way of interacting with the commenters more and the awards has been good. If you can think of any more categories to include, let me know ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it might be the mid-season finale, when they unmask Charles, but I'm not entirely sure. I'll see if I can find out for you :)
ReplyDeleteFor S6B, after ep 10
ReplyDeleteLater on in season 6.
ReplyDeleteI cannot stress how much I loved Eastwick. So, so much and I still watch that show to this day, the most heart-breaking cancellation ever! Why!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWill do :)
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more.An unplanned pregnancy is the last thing they want.
ReplyDeleteSame! It's a feature I want to see more of so I know my fav characters have ended up alright :)
ReplyDeleteIt tastes bitter in my mouth thinking about it actually, but wouldn't surprise me if the show went that route.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gavin.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etonline.com/tv/165520_exclusive_pretty_little_liars_new_time_jump_looks_wedding_gowns_more_fashion_secrets/. Here's some information about the time jump.
ReplyDeleteI hope not.Only a few show can handle these type of Arc,PLL is not among them. It'll kill the show.
ReplyDeleteI wanted Susan´s future to be revealed (DH) and Buffy´s (with Spike) hehe We deserved those character´s endings IMO Those are the ones I wanted the most
ReplyDeleteAria changing diapers, screaming babies - definitely not. Just how distracting would that be from the main storyline.
ReplyDeleteI needed Susan's ending too.
ReplyDeleteAww I hated how Susan ended up without Mike after all that trouble to get him throughout the show. Always going to be sad about that :(
ReplyDeleteBesides, if A´s still around, Aria wouldn´t be able to keep her pregnancy,
ReplyDeleteshe´d loose it with all the stress A puts her through :P
I still don't understand the reason they killed Paul 4 episodes before series finale.WTF?!?
ReplyDeleteThat's a horrible fate for any woman.I hope this is just a rumor.
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of Episode 11.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that!
ReplyDeleteMost Disappointing aspect of the episode. You can add that too.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteNo problem :)
ReplyDeleteThe best actresses IMO are Troian and Janel
ReplyDeleteIt is Spring 2012 on the show now right ?
ReplyDeleteHow about most suspicious moment. A moment in the episode where someone does something weird and not sure on the reason why.
ReplyDeleteWe're in agreement :P
ReplyDeleteThe entire show is shady. What would you pick from?LOL!
ReplyDeleteGood idea!
ReplyDeleteGood point. However, there'll probably be one scene which topples the others.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!
ReplyDeleteHahaha truth!
ReplyDeleteThat´s so rare between us haha
ReplyDeleteTrue, I'll be sure to add it as I'm usually paranoid about every little thing the characters do or say. I'll most likely be able to pick the most shadiest thing
ReplyDeleteTotally, the both were phenomenal in this episode. Janel's begging with Charles in the well and screaming - chills!
ReplyDeleteSo true.Especially when it comes to TVD.We are both obsessed about it but for completely different reasons.Mysterious ways how one's mind work,my friend!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your reviews in general.I was expecting to see you in the Devious Maids premiere review and found someone else.Bummer :(
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I actually very much enjoyed this episode. It was one of my favourite episodes of the show in a LONG time (other than the Season 5 finale of course). I'm so intrigued by what happened to the girls during the time they were locked in their rooms and I cannot wait to find out exactly what it was.
ReplyDeleteI definitely enjoyed this more than last season's premiere so I think Season 6 is off to a great start! I'm with you on seeing what the families of the girls went through during the time they were missing too, I'd love to see that!
Great review once again Gavin! :)
That was a tragic scene indeed.I felt so bad for her! Charles is a mean SoB!
ReplyDeleteI've got another one. Character we feel the most sympathy for.
ReplyDeleteDo you know Gavin ?
ReplyDeleteI would've done some reviews for TV shows myself but I'm 15 and live in the UK so it's more difficult because US shows come out so much later in the UK.
ReplyDeleteHey sorry, rushing around trying to get ready for tonight, it's an end of term party and I've been so preoccupied with this review and the awesome comments that I forgot I need to wash haha. But yes, you're right, it's about March 2012 when Alison got arrested in 5x15 so I'm guessing the show is now in April/May 2012 with the 3 weeks jump in the 6x01 premiere. The 4 year jump this season will take us to 2016 so when the show comes back in January 2016, it will be right on time :D
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam! I am so glad you enjoyed it as I know how much you were starting to waver on your feelings towards the show. Season 6 is gonna be awesome, I can feel it in my waters! I'm sure we will get to see everything we've missed in the time the girls were in the dollhouse. Going to make a very interesting 6A.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I literally got up at 5am this morning to write the review as I live in the UK and I had so much to do today and I still have so much to do that I wouldn't have had time to write this review otherwise, not until tomorrow which I didn't want to do as that makes me feel late. Within 24 hours after an episode airs is ideal for me to write a review. Sorry about Devious Maids, the reviewer is deaf and so can't watch the screener we got for the premiere as it didn't have subtitles so I wrote the preview and will continue to do so if we get more screeners for the show, but it's unlikely we will get them. Keeping my fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteTotally!
ReplyDeleteJust posted my review Of Devious Maids premiere in the advance preview section.Let me know what you think of my POV.
ReplyDeleteI live in the UK too so it's hard for me but I typically get my reviews posted within 24 hours of the episode airing in the US. I'm sure you would manage it fine :) Got up at 5am to write this one and scheduled it to post at 7pm for when I finished work. Such a long day and it hasn't even ended yet :(
ReplyDeleteI'll have a look now, thanks for doing that!
ReplyDeleteI never break my promise!
ReplyDeleteWell done for putting a lot of effort into this review. It is by far the best one I've read for an episode of a TV Show.
ReplyDeleteAww thanks very much, that's very appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThanks for confirming.
ReplyDeleteSo Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily are 17 and Alison is 16 right ?
Aria's birthday is July 22, 1994 { 17 }
Alison's birthday is June 23, 1995 { 16 }
Hanna's birthday is March 6, 1995 { 17 }
Spencer's birthday is June 12, 1994 { 17 }
Emily's birthday is November 19, 1994 { 17 }
I look forward to reading your next review.
ReplyDeleteThat looks right yeah! They should be graduating very soon! Such cool info isn't it.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to talk more PLL with the next episode. If it isn't too much trouble, it would always be much appreciative if you sent in feedback to the site. Andy loves compliments about his staff to know they're doing their jobs ;) No worries if not :) You can tweet the site or use the submit a scoop form :)
ReplyDeleteI would go as far to say one of the BEST episodes of the series
ReplyDeleteI liked the premiere but the rest was awful
ReplyDeleteNow, that's how you do a season premier! It was filled with so many good moments from start to finish, especially that last reunion scene. That was really sad.
ReplyDeleteI hope we see some flashbacks of what Charles did to the girls in the dollhouse. It looked like he made them go back to their old selves, considering the clothes they were wearing. I loved the liars burning Charles's things, Ali working with the guys, and that Sara twist.
That shot of the liars lying in the morgue was scary! Charles has no chill!
And we all know that Andrew is not A, but he might be working with A. It really looked like there were two people in hoddies , but maybe it was just tricky editing.
I'll send some feedback to the site about how good your reviews are.
ReplyDeleteOk first. I need to know all about those previews that you gonna write about Shadowhunters.
ReplyDeleteSecond. This really was an awesome start. Tho i keep saying i would've liked for the show to go darker on Big A (Charles) but they still can do it with Uber A right?, you know Uber A killing Charles after he gets his family back cause noone will betray him. I just want someone dead for real, someone who is not Mona xD.
Charles punishing the girls was good and for sure Sarah was the one that undressed them cause apparently her role tehre was to do as A says but at teh same time i still woner why he took her? I guess we will know in the upcoming weeks.
The Andrew thing is so pointless, we know better than to jump into conclusions this fast, yeah he was shady but i am sure he has nothing to do with it.
Now i need PTSD, i need flashbacks, i need someoen dying. GIVE IT TO ME!
Great review and dont forget to let me now about those previews or i will cut you if you dont xD.
MY FAVORITE SERIES PAIRING! SPENCER AND TOBY!!!! SO HEART BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!
ReplyDeleteGreat coverage Gavin. Really on point. I loved everytbing in the ep, but the Ali-zra-leb team up was priceless. So well set up.
ReplyDeleteThe look in the girls eyes after 3 weeks was heartbreaking, it made me tear up. I also agree Mona was perfect in her role and Janel delivered like never before.
The only thing I know about Charles is that he and Jason are not identical everything else is possible.
Loved the Sara twist and it will be interesting if she'll give us the finale clue to who Charles really is.
Me too
ReplyDelete"Feel the rain on your skin...."
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it was a good premiere indeed. Hopefully, the writers build it up from there.
Charles "time-warped" them? I was wondering why they looked all new, geez this guy's insane
ReplyDeleteI think the problem with Ravenswood is that it could have probably worked better as its own show without any connection with any other show. Not a spin-off whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteAND that it was a supernatural show on ABC Family and they don't last: Kyle XY, The Nine Lives of Chloe King
ReplyDelete"What the hell did Charles do to the girls in those three weeks?"
ReplyDeleteThey were made to take the Milgram experiment, we can briefly see it during the episode 2 promo.

A user on reddit transcribed as much as we can see of the 2 diary pages btw if your curious:
First page:
"It's people like them, people like Aria with her aloof, doe eyes, and Spencer, that smug over achieving know nothing know it all, and Hanna and Emily that are the root cause of all that is bad in this world. They like games? Well so do I. I fantasize about watching them scream, about watching what it takes to make them turn on each other. It's not that I hate them, I don't. They aren't evil. They just play everyone like they're game pieces. Like pawns. I'm no pawn, and they can't play me."
Second page:
Once you know what someone cares about [it's] easy to beat them, to separate them. Just [like] chess. I lure each one and I isolate each [of] them, and knock them off the board. I [am] grateful that Mona so unwittingly [...] play me, because now all the pieces are [...] chess pieces, all mine. And when I [...] and I will, that's checkmate for [...].
When I think about what [...] sometimes I have doubt they [...] not a bad person and I [...] that what I am after is [...] justice in the universe [...] unwilling to provide it [...] any longer and where weaker and [...] I'd dragged them [...]
Kyle Xy was more sci-fi, and until Stitchers came this week, KXY was the net's sole serious venture in that genre, unless we count Three Moons Over Milford and The Middleman.
ReplyDeleteThat's brutal and I'm sure that's not all Charles did to them. Poor girls. I can totally see Hanna breaking over this - I'm not saying she's the weakest, she's just more fragile than the others.
ReplyDeleteThose journal entries are interesting and I honestly would have never pegged Andrew to be such a cruel person in his own mind. What he says is so demonic. I'm actually quite scared of him now and what he will do. Thanks for sharing those though!
Charles has to be insane to explain why he's doing this. Insane and obsessed. I mean I loved the whole throwback to the original Liars' look but it's extreme. Way, way extreme to be rationalised.
ReplyDelete"No one else can feel it for you, only you can let it in!"
ReplyDeleteI've rewatched that bit loads haha. I'm hoping the writers can build on it too. Brilliant start anyway.
Yay thanks for reading Spindae2 and sharing your own thoughts! This is going to be a hard episode to rewatch as that 3 week separation reunion was quite heartbreaking. Brutal. But yeah you have a point about Sara, she should have some answers and hopefully she isn't too broken to share them.
ReplyDeleteHaha Spoby is great and it's going to be a tough ride for both of them this season but they can pull through it! They have to be endgame.
ReplyDeleteQuite a statement, and I don't think I would entirely disagree.
ReplyDeleteHaha if we get screeners from ABCFamily for Shadowhunters, I'll get to watch them and write an advance preview for the episodes. I'm really hoping we do! (P.S. Don't cut me or I won't be able to write them haha)
ReplyDeleteHaha I can totally understand your hunger for death on this show. It feels like it doesn't really stick. I think the last proper death was Jessica DiLaurentis and Shauna (Shana?). There's still time for Charles to go really dark as well, I mean the girls did destroy his room of memories. He's going to want revenge. But I think Uber A will be the darkest most twisted one yet. They're going to be saving the best 'til last. I could see Uber A killing Charles.
Andrew has nothing to do with A, that we can be sure, but he's still a bit of a psychopath. Have you read what he wrote in his journals? He says some pretty horrific stuff in regards to the girls. We are going to have to keep an eye out for him. Thanks for reading Ron!
I generally agree with the reddit theory that Andrew is probably dead. His body will probably turn up in a few episodes and the police will close the case, the liars however know better. But without police protection...they're more vulnerable for Charles to strike again (this time leading to the unmasking).
ReplyDeleteI believe all the girls are going to go through various phases of PTSD. Emily had a gun in the promo which is very out of character for her. Plus the Maddie Ziegler BTS images seem to suggest that Spencer will be sent to a mental institution (Radley perhaps if it reopens).
Also with the 2 A's, I'm certain their were 2. One was probably the Black Widow (the one at the computer) while the other was Charles (Watching them through the glass, he then turned the sprinkler on to save his memories).
Thanks for reading Daniel Bass! Very relieved you enjoyed the premiere as much as I did.
ReplyDeleteAndrew is basically a psychopath, but he's definitely not A, or Charles. I mean I guess they could make him Charles if they wanted to go that route but we all know that's too predictable. We will have to keep an eye on Andrew because of the things he wrote in his journal - so awful!
Could have been tricky editing, or it could be that Uber A was watching the girls while Charles pulled the strings.
Andrew could be dead? I guess that would be a huge development, for sure, though was he not the one Tanner saw in the video of the journalist outside Ali's house before she addressed them and got the partial plate from the van?
ReplyDeleteThe PTSD stages will be interesting to see, though I have no idea why they haven't gone through PTSD seasons ago because they have been through so, so much! The police are going to have to watch them 24/7 to keep them safe but then again, if they can lose 4 girls in police custody while being transported by men with guns, I doubt they would even help. But at least Tanner will be on the girls' side now instead of working against them, which is probably bad news for her and won't live very long.
So do we have Black Widow, Charles and Uber A still to unmask?
Aw thanks very much, that's very appreciated. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, it was end of term and I went to a party. Unfortunately nothing very PLL-esque happened so it was pretty boring :P
ReplyDeleteOne person's trash is another person's treasure, or so my mother told me :P
ReplyDeleteI kind of picture them all sort of condemned to Rosewood and never ever leaving because they never ever can. It's quite depressing but I don't see the girls ever really escaping what they've been through.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, I mean it would give Aria a very emotional storyline if something like that happened (and yeah with all that A puts them through she would definitely lose it) and provide more depth but I'd rather not.
ReplyDeleteProbably so he could be among the ghosts in the ghost gallery at the end of the show. They couldn't/wouldn't get Edie back for it and they'd want as many familiar faces in it as they could.
ReplyDeleteI liked how Miranda died, that was a neat twist.
ReplyDeleteWe aren't sure if that person in the video was Andrew. Someone was looking back over previous episodes and the same person in the same costume was seen previously from behind talking to Melissa. So I've seen some suspect that it was Wren (played by a body double) or possibly Charles (and Melissa knows the truth).
ReplyDeleteBlack Widow and Uber A are suspected to be the same person. IMK has started mentioning both a Big A and an Uber A but has previously said that Black Widow is endgame.
A theory I liked was that the diary was written by and planted by Uber A. So Mona, Charles and even the liars are all the chess pieces referenced in the diary. Uber A wants Alison and is playing and manipulating everyone (even his/her own A team) to get her.
Also you might like this:
http://xjennax13.tumblr.com/post/118220195154/timeline-of-important-events-in-real-rosewood
A user figured out the timeline for the show. November 2011 had 7 weeks...haha
I have never heard of Three Moons Over Milford and The Middleman. Are they from the old days of ABC Family?
ReplyDeleteSo you'd rather not know who the Uber A is and why they have tormented these girls? It's literally driving me insane that I don't already know this.
ReplyDeleteYeah the town didn't seem as mysteriously weird on Ravenswood as it did in PLL when the girls would venture there. PLL's approach to writing mysteries is very tedious but we have to admit, it gets the job done of making people talk about it and come back for more (until they get so sick of it which is totally understandable). Maybe 10 more episodes of Ravenswood would have benefitted the show a great deal. They had a lot more they could have done, but I don't think I would have watched any more because I just didn't feel connected to the characters and I need that in a show.
Yeah it can't be confirmed it was definitely Andrew and the lead led to nowhere. Wren has to be involved somehow, he just has to be, and I wanted Melissa to be totally honest with Spencer. If she is hiding more (and she most definitely is) then I can't ever see Spencer letting that one go.
ReplyDeleteYeah I thought Charles is Big A (as he was the Big A Reveal) and then there's Uber A. I don't want a 3rd person to unmask though, I feel like 2 is enough, but the idea of Black Widow makes me shiver but in a pretty good way.
Thanks so much for sharing that! I'm going to have to read it all when I get a minute but this is so amazing. Kudos on whoever wrote that. So the show is in June 2012 now so they should be having their last weeks at school right? I cannot tell you how much I am thankful for this post! Haha 7 weeks in November, hey it isn't the strangest thing to happen on the show :P
Christopher DeBono shared this amazing timeline link further up. Someone on Tumblr has made a very detailed and amazing real-time Rosewood sequence of events thing. The show is now in June 2012. http://xjennax13.tumblr.com/post/118220195154/timeline-of-important-events-in-real-rosewood
ReplyDeleteU know I always enjoy Ur reviews, sadly I wasn't picked this year to join Ur writers team, but maybe next year. ^^
ReplyDeleteThe flashbacks to those 3 weeks will be really tough and honestly I look forward to them cause Hanna and Spencer can really tap into a dark place and deliver master class.
I honestly don't think that Sara was randomly picked from Charles, there has to be a story behind that as well. Can't wait to find out.
Yeah they've confirmed that 6A takes place over a 3 week period and will involve graduation. Based on the tweets and stuff it looks like Prom is in episode 9 so Graduation must take place in the unmasking episode (6.10).
ReplyDeleteWren being involved is the only way the whole A thing makes sense. Too much involves medical stuff, money, Radley and mental issues. All of which have ties to Wren. Plus he was randomly at Alison's funeral in the pilot when he hadn't met her...
Also some people on reddit starting going over early episodes and noticed that we may have seen 'Sara Harvey' before. Since Uber A seems to be manipulating Charles and was probably manipulating Mona (as A), they were probably manipulating 'Sara' too. Eg here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST4UzsSp5_I
Sara could potentially be the one who stole stuff from the girls houses.
Yep. They were part of the first generation of ABC Family shows that aired when the network just transitioned to its now-recent "A New Kind of Family" branding. Kyle XY, and Wildfire were among that first set.
ReplyDeleteIf you remember Liam's crazy stalker in Season 5 of 90210, she was the lead girl in The MIddleman. That show has a huge cult following, even up til now.
Oh God, if Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield plays during their prom, they're going to break down on the spot if this PTSD storyline isn't fully resolved then. Prom is going to be so hard for the girls now Charles has ruined it for them.
ReplyDeleteI remember that part from the premiere so well!! That theory offers a whole new amazing take on that and it makes total sense. Charles definitely had Sara playing Alison like he then made Mona play her, so it's interesting to think Charles would let Sara out of wherever he had her captive at the time (presumably the dollhouse was made then since the room she was in had the counting-down-the-days tally on the walls). He must have cracked her very early on to do his bidding.
Could the someone else not just be Uber A? And oh yeah, the Red Coats. I hope that's addressed as the Red Coats seem to have been forgotten on the show.
Ahh I see. I've just looked both of them up on Wikipedia and both sound really interesting. May see if I can find the episodes for them and give them a watch. I have so much to watch haha. And I do remember Liam's crazy stalker from 90210, she was also in Trophy Wife which I loved and I know her from Parks and Recreation too. I'm a fan of Natalie Morales, she's awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat Natasha Bedingfield song still brings back old memories...of those Pantene commercials that is. :))
ReplyDeleteIMK has mentioned that the identity of the Red Coats will be revealed this season, so it looks like it is coming. Which potentially fits into the whole Sara thing. The Liars end up unmasking both Charles and Sara, along with the police finding the dollhouse which puts a big dent into Big A's plans. Leading to them taking a break for a few years (the time jump) before trying again.
ReplyDeleteThe PTSD storyline is running till at least episode 5 because that's when Maddie Ziegler is introduced. Spencer's in some kind of mental institution (Radley?) so she seems to be having a breakdown.
With the dollhouse I saw some theorize that Charles hit Alison during 'that night' and intended to take her to the dollhouse. But when Jessica stopped him he took Sara instead. That also fits in with IMK mentioning that A has been planning the dollhouse for much longer then we think (so before the events of 'That Night' he had it ready to go).
The way it's been implied the 'someone else' is almost like a liaison with Uber A. Mona mentioned that no one see's or talks to the one in charge, they just get orders from someone else. I assume that if it's Sara then she's not a proper member of the A team. She's just a broken doll obeying orders without knowing what she's doing. Effectively she's just the voice so A doesn't have to talk.
THAT'S IT! I mean I knew the song from before those commercials but I was racking my brain trying to think of where I had heard the song before and that's it! Found one on YouTube too for old times sake haha:
