Great finale. Unexpected twist with the implications of the tie. I think next season is going to open with Tom Jane as President and Selina being his reluctant VP. Though she made it clear at the end of the episode that she would resent going back to that position, I think desperation is going to force her to accept it.
That was an unexpected twist! Having a tie and the possibility of Tom James as President next season. I didn't realise a tie was even possible, how ridiculous is that! Really great episode though, like Amy being there for Selina and Selina's full out meltdown and then her resolve to go to the rally.
I'm not US election expert but this is my understanding from the episode - because its a tie between Selina and O'Brien it is up to congress to vote on who should be President. But Congress also gets to vote on who should be Vice President - Tom James or whoever O'Brien's running mate is.
If Congress is tied on who the President should be then the Vice-President becomes the President instead. Hence Tom James could end up President.
It is completely silly and very rarely happens, I think it happened once in like 1800 or something.
Perfect show is perfect! Loved it! A solid ending to a solid season! (I've been shocked to be reading in various reviews and sites how the season has been uneven... have we been watching the same show?)
My only complaint: Not enough Mike and not enough Dan! Though they both got their moments: - Mike vs The Carpet - Dan vs the Exit Poll guy - Dan feeling left out (aaaaaaawwwww... he does care! My heart broke a bit there...)
Ben "elections-are-my-cocaine-It-used-to-be-cocaine-and-elections" and Kent always stellar.
MVP as usual: Amy. Being off her game because she's not with Selina when she should be (I had a feeling she couldn't not be there when she's basically built her career around this moment... and I was glad she went). Singing in the car. The Amy/Selina hug. "Ma'am up!"
Some nice Sue moments. She's been a bit underused this season I've felt, but she was great yesterday! I hope her eventually conceding politics are not boring meant she actually decides to stay.
Gary... Devastated Gary over the concession. Trying to hold Selina up by the ass Gary. Microphone snatching Gary... Just pick your Gary being awesome!
Catherine was also great!
Bill and him mentioning prison every other second was funny.
A bit light on the Jonah and Richard, but that's okay.
Karen: Ugh! Can't believe she got mentioned by name but Dan didn't :(
Tom overplaying his hand a bit there... getting a bit full of himself now that the presidency was a tangible option for him... This is gonna be iiiiiiinteresting...
And Selina, #everylittlethingshedoesistragic... Man! Always a treat to watch the queen in action. No matter how fucked up the situation gets.
I liked that even thought the actual election results are up in the air, there was resolution of the built up we had throughout the season. And I like how it sets up the rest of the show.
From a storytelling perspective I don't want Selina to revert to the VP role, because I think that's a regression the show doesn't need. However exploring the statistically implausible loophole that could put her back in the position and the looming threat of it possibly happening is interesting. I think they need to just keep Tom James around as her VP and have their power struggle be the main focus from now on. Either way Armando Iannucci did a great job with finishing off his story and leaving the slate clean enough for the new crew to come in and see what they can do.
If I'm being completely honest, I'm a bit weary for next season, but I choose to stay optimistic. I just hope the show doesn't change too much.
I think it would be such a regression from a narrative standpoint if she goes back to being VP. I do appreciate having the threat of her possibly falling back into that role, but I wouldn't like it if that is in fact what happens. She think she is too proud to take the job even if it is offered to her. So if it does happen I wouldn't really buy it.
The show IMO has grown out of it's need to have Selina in the VEEP position. There is conflict to be had by her being POTUS and having a constant power struggle with her more popular and more capable VP Tom James, thus keeping the title of the show relative to the plot.
great ending with an unexpected twist that leaves us with a bit of a cliffhanger.... and it will be interesting to see the outcome when the show returns.... I guess that the likely would be that Tom James wins the backdoor presidency, and Selina reverts back to being Veep (hence the title), but I agree that it would feel too much of a regression of the show to do so, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Solid season that wasn't the strongest, but still manages to deliver
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteI really liked it, but I'm a bit confused as to how can Tom end up being president, I didn't understand that part. Someone explain please?

Oh, thanks! So the election storyline isn't over yet unless they do a time jump! I hope this means more Hugh Laurie!
