Laurence Fishburne really does deserve more love. His scenes with his wife and everyone else were great. But hands down the best were Chilton and Mason.
Bella, Bella, Bella :'( Excuse me while I go cry myself in a corner forever. Gina Torres and Laurence Fishburne both brought their A game tonight, as always. Such sublime performances all the while breaking everyone's hearts. Fun fact: The actors are actually married in real life! Makes their moments together onscreen even more emotional. Brilliant.
Whoa, change much, Alana. Bright colors, definition, and hardness to show her transition from the empathetic muted friend to the revengeful angel of near death.
Loved the insight it gave into a llll the character's psychology going forward. Especially Alana. And lol Chilton trying (and somewhat succeeding) in manipulating everyone.
Brilliant episode. The Jack Bella scenes were heartbreaking, and I loved seeing all these characters back again. All damaged by Hannibal in some way, and really intriguing to watch. Also, Anderson did a phenomenal job as Mason Verger.

For those who have seen this "brilliant" episode try and get it around your head(s) that this "masterful series" was "canceled" due to a lack of ratings..................by popular consensus I apparently don't know what "great" TV is (Dracula, Alphas, The Bridge, Stalker, and now Hannibal). This episode was "near perfect", IMHO. 4 THE CANCELED SERIES HANNIBAL, I will remain Nobody!!! QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: Margot Verger to Alana QUOTE: "If my brother offers you chocolate................politely refuse."
"He was my friend and I wanted to run away with him".
I will miss this show terribly, seriously.
I'm absolutely loving the Jack we seem to be getting this season.
Season 1/2 Jack was a bit of a stubborn hard-ass, and at times he got slightly annoying, but he's like a completely different person this season and I honestly love it.
He's more resolute and human, and I can actually see Jack pulling Will up from the hole he's digging himself into. Everyone else seems focused on getting revenge, he's the only one thinking about what that would mean for Will.
I really don't like Will this season. After all that's Hannibal done to you and you're still siding with him?! Will's inner Abigail is showing and I wasn't too fond of her either. I appreciate and understand the deep connection Will has with Hannibal but c'mon, who else can really catch Hannibal because I don't trust Alana, Verger, Chilton or anyone getting the job done before getting killed.
A more somber episode, but still really beautiful.
-Nice way to keep the fireflies/ firefly man-glass shattering sounds relevant with a tie back to Alana's fall!! -Love the unveiling of Mason's mask and Chiltin's denture (a nice wink to FD too!) LOL to: "face to face" - Nice to have Will be honest about his emotions to Jack, but I also think besides just wanting to run away with him, it would also have been a way for them all to have gone unscathed. -Interesting to see Alana briefly paralleled to Mason via wheelchair, but the cane also intrigues me, because of my [probably never to be seen] Robert Lecter theory... -Having Bella die now (and Jack be the executioner), is a good choice, especially if they were going to introduce an African American Starling next season, as opposed to saving this for her story's end. It also makes his choice to find Hannibal, a bit more subtly ironic. -A lot of Mason's lines to Alana were straight out of the Hannibal film, but talking to Clarice instead (and if we notice, Alana's hair is much darker--nearly black like Abigail, Margot, and potentially play to "Starling".) -A lot of black and white motifs again (like Bella and white dresses), but also instead of using more red, the episode seemed to use orange a bit. I particularly liked the contrast with Alana's dark hair with her coat through. Kind of a dash of something 'pop' with something very macabre, including her low keyed attitude (very similar to Bedelia, I might add) -Interesting how Chiltin made the rounds, but everyone turned him down. Also like the parallels with him and 'Dead Memory Abigail', both being "optimists". -And wonder if "Bella's" death was publicized at all, because if not, then someone had to tell Hannibal...I don't recall seeing a post mark or address on the envelope either (but I should really go look at screen caps)...so that might be something to chew on.
I think given the source material, especially Red Dragon, which is coming up, I think there probably isn't any going back (at least not for a long long time). Even when heis wrestling arguments/coversing with [dead] Abigail, it's becoming clearer that even though he forgives him, he seems to know that it's not the same as accepting him and that maybe he has a different definition to who he thinks he is now
. I am not saying it's a straight line or Will Graham's feelings have completely washed away, but given that Hannibal's definition of forgiveness is to eat him (seemingly going back to Gideon flashback where it's not cannibalism, if I he doesn't consider one his equal), that Will Graham has been demoted in his mind and there are just only a few options to be had IMO...
I think he is just trying to figure out if he really made a mistake or not. I think he wants to convince himself that he truly knows Hannibal, but I think the fact is, he only saw a glimpse of who he is. Abigail of his memory palace is really not the Abigail of the real world in the sense that she is the one rooting for Hannibal and is exuberantly confident in her arguments. There is no fear there--a very big difference from the Abigail viewers knew. Will is the one that has been telling her that she is wrong in her line of thinking, even though he comes to forgive him (but I think there is a difference between forgiveness and acceptance). He does the same to Chiyoh as well--so I think it's not as simple as him siding with Hannibal. It's more about coming to terms with the truth about himself and rediscovering who he is and/or who he wants to be out of spite. For Will Graham, it may be about redemption of himself and finding a way to try and move on...
I so agree with you and I had not thought of this myself but it would have set the stage so much better for this to have been the first episode. It was beautifully done.
I don't think Will's even necessarily about revenge. He still thinks Hannibal is in a twisted way is his friend. But Jack is definitely in the best place psychology. Alana is probably the worst. Which makes a lot of sense, unlike the former she only saw the facade until it was too late, as opposed to Will who bonded with Hannibal's true self and Jack who saw the facade but never became emotionally close to Hannibal or blind to the truth. That and he was never manipulated by him in the way they were.
Nah establishing Hannibal's situation, mindset and plan was necessary. As was establishing Will's in episode 2 and where and how he will find Hannibal.
I think that Will's not seeking revenge, also. Just a way to make peace with a person very close to him (maybe the closest). Too bad that Hannibal is who he is. In other worlds, in other dimensions...
Damn Nice to see Alana and Margot again. This show needs to be picked or has it already been picked up because going to comic con with a dead show sure does not make any sense
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
"He was my friend and I wanted to run away with him."
ReplyDeleteThank you for confirming that I understood season 2 Will!
KEEP CALLING NETFLIX GUYS!!! THIS SHOW MUST BE PICKED UP FOR SEASON 4
Laurence Fishburne really does deserve more love. His scenes with his wife and everyone else were great. But hands down the best were Chilton and Mason.
ReplyDeleteIt's a damn shame and an absolute tragedy this show was canceled.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode. Not one wasted moment.

ReplyDeleteApparently contractually it can't happen. That being said contracts can be broken.

I think he still would but he can't.
ReplyDeleteHe will do what he has to do (I think) but some part of him desires to go with Hannibal.
I appreciate his honesty, though.
