HOLY SHIT, - maybe the "BEST EPISODE" of the series! - on "raining army of the dead"! - the "GIANT" it! - that battle was one of the "BEST BATTLES EVER"! 4 A GAME OF KINGDOMS, I am trying to stay Nobody, but it's not easy after this episode!!!
That ending was not only the best moment of the season (so far) but probably one of the best moments of the series. The Whitewalkers are truly the biggest threat to the kingdom.
I really enjoyed Dany's meeting with Tyrion! From the first discussion on Jorah to the later discussions on ruling I enjoyed every scene with her tonight! A first for me. Tyrion is already showing his value. Let's hope she listens and learns!
I have little doubt now thanks to Sam's inspirational speech... Ollie will be the one saying "For the Watch" in the finale! Ugh!
Sansa finally learns that her younger brothers yet live! That should mean something to her even if Theon's tortured existence as Ramsay's pet means little or nothing to her. Hmm.. Will she write a pink letter next week?

Hardhome...Wow! - Everybody hates the fucking Thenns! XD - Glad Wun Wun lived! I thought for a few moments D&D may kill him off in Hardhome. Maybe his future will play out like the books after all.... - I will go on record saying I am not a fan of the Evil Dead like zombies in the white Walker army, but despite that I really enjoyed the battle at Hardhome! - Seeing the White Walkers in deatil was interesting... They did not have ice armor, but they did seem to havean almost supernatural sound when they moved. - Their weapons shatter just about anything... Anything but Valyrian Steel. Glad to have Thrones back on track! This was only the second "Awesome" episode of the season for me I think...

I did find it a bit odd to see Bridget Hjort Sorensen as the Wildling elder woman (Val-lite?) after just seeing her as the Kommasiar in Pitch Perfect 2! I kept waiting for her to break out in song! XD
What an amazing episode? I hope Jon lives. Please stop killing Starks. I can not wait until Mommy Stark returns. I do not trust the men of the nights watch... It is good that Sansa knows her brothers are alive. I want more episodes per season.
You are right - it was more like Army of Darkness - until those bony kids jumped on the poor lady leader and started munching on her. I was sorry she was killed ( to rise again) because I thought she was really good in the role but the second she and the kids looked so sad parting at the water's edge I knew she was not going to survive.
My Goodness!!! Daenarys and Tyrion finally meeting, topped by the White Walker invasion, easily top 5 of the series. Why is this not their special episode 9, I wonder how they are going to top it next week!
Alright! That's what I am talking about! Beautiful episode. Very nicely executed and the cinematography also seemed at Thrones top notches.
-One Night in Braavos and the world's your oyster...(Arya looked so pretty and calmly confident) - Tyrion talking to Dany was amazing! with the Tyrion/Dany banter, Sansa learning that she may not be the only Stark left, and of course the epic battle against the dead. easily the best ep of the season and one of the best of the series thus far for me....
Not sure why my original comment disappeared, but...
Awesome episode... WOW!
I enjoyed every Dany scene a lot (a first for me). Tyrionbeing there certainly helped raise the quality of the scenes. He has already proven has value... Let's hope she listens and learns!

Hardhome... WOW! - First off I need to be on record for hating the Evil Dead looking zombie raiders! Ugh! - Second, I still loved the battle overall! Arguably the best action scene of the series! - I may have hated the zombies, but I did like the White Walkers! Best episode of the season and only episode 8! I wonder what will happen in the next two episodes ... *Makes Monty Burns greed hand motion with fingers* Excellent....
Definitely the best battle sequence this show has ever produced. I loved how it was grounded in the conflict for the wildlings between the wheel of history and survival in the future, and that made the subsequent battle even more effective. What a thrilling final fifteen minutes that was.
Also, Tyrion and Dany together are awesome.
A review: http://polarbearstv.com/2015/05/31/game-of-thrones-hardhome-review-5x08/
Those final 15 minutes were just pure awesomeness. Holy fuck, that battle sequence was definitely up there with the battle on the Wall last season. No other show does action sequences like Game of Thrones does. My eyes were glued to the screen. And Jon fucking Snow!! Such a badass tonight. My jaw collectively dropped and my mouth screamed at that final moment when the Night's King raised up his arms to resurrect all the dead Wildling's to become White Walkers. So long, Karsi! :( I was already starting to like you.
Tyrion and Dany chatting and ultimately him being her adviser was everything I ever wanted in my entire life. Two of my favorite characters interacting with each other is just incredible.
Cersei deserved everything she got tonight and just seeing her struggle being in prison was so damn satisfying haha. She's really not going to confess to anything she's done and it's just great seeing her suffer.
After an extremely lackluster season thus far (save a couple episodes and a few scenes), this episode strolls along and gives us one of the best episodes the show has ever done! We're finally getting more interactions between different people: Dany/Tyrion (finally!) was brilliant and well done and I could watch an hour of these 2 just talking, and Sansa/Theon where Theon finally got to tell Sansa that Bran/Rickon are still alive.
I've never been the biggest fan of Jon or the Wall story, but this episode, jeez! Phenomenal. From the tension with the Free Folk and the Crows, only to be disrupted by the White Walkers and their crazy army. When the Night's King raised his arms and the dead rose again filling his fallen ranks, I remembered that this is the real enemy. All the conspiring for the throne is interesting, and the characters interactions are great, but it all pales in what actually matters when compared to a giant army of the dead that will invade the south and only grow in numbers!
I'll never stop watching this show, but this season has bored me and made my interest waver. But this episode brought all the awesomeness back! Hope it continues in the final 2 episodes.
I'm waiting for someone to make a Night's King "Mic Drop" meme out of a screencap..
They just killed dozens if not hundreds of undead to barely escape only to have Ser Chillalot raise his arms and raise the dead.along with them. Serious mic drop moment.
I was getting a bit bored last couple of episodes, but this one had my jaw on the floor.
- Dany & Tyrion seem honest an leveled out to each other, you can see there's a mutual respect growing there. - Sansa stuff was a bit boring, they dragged out Reek's truth about the Starks too much in my opinion, could've been done episodes earlier, but I think because they're ahead of the book there (so i've heard, havent read them) they're being slow on purpose. - Arya's storyline this season still bores me, tonight being no exception. - I was rooting for that Giant, let's hope he can swim, or at least make it onto one of the ships without sinking it. - oh look, a new badass wildling woman, I think I'm going to like her... aw wait she's dead.
best episode of the last 2 seasons by far, haven't been this amazed by an episode since the red wedding. and to think next week is supposed to be the big one :D
I am lost for words here. OK taking a deep breath. That was an incredible episode of Game of Thrones, of TV in general. It is everything that S5 had been lacking so far and everything I love about the show.
+ Dany and Tyrion, I have been anxiously awaiting their scenes since they met last week. It was everything I wanted. Tyrion is a good adviser and Dany is powerful but needs that advice. I like that they both saw this and came to an alliance
+ Oh Jorah you are a love sick puppy, only actually sick with greyscale and less a puppy and more a wild dog about to be unleashed.
+ Olly Olly Olly, well they are certainly setting THAT event up. Damn.
+ OK so book 5 'A Dance With Dragons' is a bit of slog to get through, sorry but it is. Yet the best storyline is Jon's. It is the first time since the early books/seasons that I started caring for the character again. So I am really happy with Jon's story this season, he was always in the role as fantasy hero but his ability to command and fight and earn the trust of his enemies are what makes him worthy of that hero role.
+ Which brings me onto those final 20 minutes. There has been many battles in GOT but this was my favourite. Castle Black last year may have been longer but it was at night and sometimes hard to see what was happening. There is none of that during Hardhome. In the snow you can see the wildings, Night Watch and White Walkers battle and its terrifying and it is stunning and I feel like for the first time you really can see the threat from beyond the Wall.
Dany talks about breaking the wheel, about becoming leader of Westeros but if it wasn't clear before then it certainly is now. Claiming the Iron Throne is one big fool's quest. It is winning the war against the undead that truly matters. Jon realises this, Stannis to a certain extent does but the other great houses and would be rulers don't yet. But they will, oh yes they will and it may be too late when they do.
Best episode of the season for sure. Loved the ending sequence with the White Walkers which instantly becomes one of the finest battle sequences on the series and the scenes with Tyrion and Dany were awesome. Great episode! Hopefully things will only get better from here.
Great episode! The leaks weren't 100% accurate which means Tormund didn't die and I am glad for that. Everything else happened..A very important moment for Jon's true identity and destiny..At least, that's how I'll consider it..The tale of the last hero of the North with his dragonsteel slaying the enemy. Who needs dragons when you have a bad*** sword xD.
His sword is made from Valarian steel. Which only the oldest houses still have 1 or 2 swords from. Remember Ned Starks sword that Tywin Lannister reforged into a new sword for Jamie (which he gave to Brienne if I am correct)? Same stuff. Valarian steel is somthing the old ones could make, much and much better then normal steel as we saw in this episode again :)
I have no idea why there are people who voted awful this episode..Even I who's very hard to please and always find something to complain about, liked it..I even didn't mind seeing Dany on screen this time xD..Sure, that quote about breaking the wheel, is as stupid as she is, but with Tyrion's help, the scenes were bearable..As long as she takes that little screen time and the majority of the episode takes place in the North where the most important stuff happen, just like it happened on this episode, I don't see why should anyone not like it...Something tells me, you're not gonna like it the next seasons a lot..The North is the heart of the story..It's where the mythology of the series is important and where all the major events supposed to take place.
I don't understand why you're telling this to me...I know...I just mentioned the legend of the last hero who had a dragonsteel sword (Valyrian steel) during the long night..And by true sword, I was referring to Blackfyre. The sword of Kings.
Didn't know the nickname was dragonsteel so I got the impression that you were serious about it being a magical sword. Just wanted to clear that up, which was apparently not needed. What is the story behind Blackfyre, can't remember hearing about it before.
oh xD..But it is a magic sword, forged in the fires of Valyria with spells and god knows what else.
Blackfyre was one of the swords the Targs brought with them from Valyria. It was the sword of Aegon of conqueror which used to be passed from King to King, until it was given to first blackfyre bastard if I recall..It is considered to be lost.
Longclaw was forged before the doom of Valyria, if that's what you're saying. It is not a lost art according to the books and there are people who can forge Valyrian steels. But except the fact they are missing the material to do so (the reason Tywin was looking all his life to buy a Valyrian sword and melted Ice in order to make his), like I said, I seriously doubt what would the result be exactly. There's no way to forge an exact Valyrian or at least original sword nowadays..I believe dragon fire and other stuff like spells were used as well. How could anyone knows these things when the doom happened more than 300 years ago.
There are lots of little differences, especially since one can argue we in some cases are in uncharted territory on both fronts (the film and the novels) and because there are already some differences between the novels and books, including event history order as next season may bring the other Greyjoy plot into the series, as the new casting calls may suggest.
I also think that "transformation" via magic is thematic. In the Ice Dragon a little girl named Adara was born in the winter and was different. She had blue-ish skin and did not show much emotion. She could stay outside and play in the snow longer than other children until one day she became friends with the rare Ice Dragon. The story continues to where she starts to slowly feel and asks the Ice Dragon to help her save her family, as a consequence the Ice Dragon dies and becomes a "lake" and the girl becomes like normal girl as spring finally arrives.
I believe this is what might be happening to Dany as well, that she may not have a cooler head until her one dragon dies. Additionally we have seen something like this with the Unsullied. When they were "freed" they become more "human", could have feelings, be more vulnerable and became less of a force than they were.
I think Arya is also in a transformation mode of becoming 'not Arya"--her rage is disappearing for what the Faceless Men deem as 'a greater good' for the God of Death.
It's also for this reason that I believe that Sansa will become Lady Stoneheart, instead of her mother. They brought up Thoros of Myr's name a few episodes ago and showed us the Stone Men...plus Melessandra is also on her way to Winterfell and she knows of Thoros power...(Sansa's story is an example of how it did NOT go in the books, as ADWD had a theme of "impostors" which seems to be eliminated in this version thus far)
The White walkers in this scene show show a more "human" element by showing Jon they care about what Jon did, which was killing one that might have been a high ranking fighter of sorts. They made a point to show us they have a "purpose" and are not mindless in their efforts.
My theory about the series the whole time has been that this is about what the First Men did to the Children of the Forest (metaphor for man destroys nature and ultimately themselves). A Karmatic Cycle to change the season (or the Government system), in order to get man to a 'better place'...
All I asked if Jon was hit, because it looked like he was --and if so, he might have a connection to them or things that reside in Winter in a way he didn't before. If not no big deal. I just don't have time to rewatch it.
"How could anyone knows these things when the doom happened more than 300 years ago, and there were no dragons for close or more (don't recall right now) than 100 years."
Have a vision of the past, be reincarnated, or have read about how in a book :p
I always thought running Walkers (that sounds like an oxymoron) were lame. I can forgive this show for doing them, though, since they're not just zombies but ~magical~ zombies!
Very True, I'm just saying there are ways were it could come back into play. Being a greenseer for instance could lead one to materials needed, should they exist somewhere...
you are right :D..Everything is possible in theory. But they don't need to use (if the can't find) Valyrian steel. The children used dragonglass and from what we know Stannis was supposed to order someone to mine (dragonstone or Storm's end don't remember xD) for it before it was captured. In the books, there's only one or two mentions about Dragonsteel and the others. One is from Sam to Jon who's read it in a book. It hasn't been tested yet, and it wouldn't be a very convenient solution. But I am sure it'll come into play at some point. There are at least a handful of those swords out there somewhere. There is also the legend of the last hero, which I firmly believe it's another cultural interpretation about AA/TPTWP, wielding such a sword during the Long night.
That was an incredible episode. Hands down best episode of the season and one of the best of the series. There wasn't one scene or moment that I didn't love.
Dany and Tyrion together? Awesome. Finally he has someone who will listen to him. I feel like they could be a very powerful team.
I couldn't help but relish in Cersei's suffering. She's gotten away with far too much for far too long. She finally knows how it feels. And she's the idiot who gave that religious zealot so much power.
Sansa learning that Theon didn't kill her brothers...definitely felt like that gave her a renewed sense of strength and determination to get herself out of the terrible situation she's in. I hope she does.
The battle at Hardhome it was everything I could have hoped for and more. It makes the zombie apocalypse look tame on Walking Dead (though I still like the Walking Dead). Damn that awesome. I couldn't decide what moment I liked more...all the wights jumping off the cliff in drones, no care in the world, then getting up and attacking or the king resurrecting all the dead wildlings/night's watchmen to join his army. Terrifying. I can't wait for the next confrontation with them. And now they know valerian steel also kills white walkers because I'm pretty sure they lost a lot of the dragon glass in that hut.
I have to ask, why did you hate the zombies? I love the White Walkers and can't wait to see them again! I was wondering if Jon would survive the battle...
They are not at all how I pictured them from reading the books or how the TV viewers were introduced to them in Season 1.They went from lumbering, but hard to kill mindless wights to Harryhausenesque speedsters that remind me more of The Evil Dead than GRRM's wights.
Don't get me wrong,... I loved the battle, but I just do not like how D&D portray either the wights or the Others/ White Walkers. They made the wights more deadly and the White Walkers less deadly than they should be.
You have a good point here. I haven't read the books yet, I think I'll wait until the series is over.
Vanity Fair, I'm not sure about it, posted an article talking about a theory that Dany is probably going to be the Westeros "only hope" because if the dragon glass, valyrian (dragon?) steel can kill the White Walkers, maybe the Dragon Fire can kill them too? Anyway, I just a theory that I read, so pardon me if I'm not making any sense!
With so much time between books (as much as 5 or 6 years sometimes) fans come up with a lot of theories! xD
Dany going to Westeros is almost a sure thing. In the books there is an expression/ prophecy "The Dragon has three heads" so a lot of people are expecting all 3 dragons to be ridden by people. Depending on who you ask you get 3 different people as riders... A lot of fun theories and debates!
Like all theories there are nonbelievers as well. Some think that by the time Dany reaches Westeros she will not even have all 3 dragons. Who knows...
Holly mother of episodes. Those final 15 minutes were crazy. Question: Was the Sword made of DrangonGlass or WTH happened there?. What is Bran's role in all of this, we havnt seen him this season but theyw ere outside the wall and end up on that three with that elder, so WTH? Danni and ehr quest for teh Iron throne will get her kill. She should trust Tyrion.
My theory is that the 7 kingdoms will be united under the Starks and Targaryens. For them to survive the White Walkers they will need the dragons and the stark wolves and the abilities that come with that connection.
Considering the downfall of house Stark that seems like a very satisfying ending.
That's true, I try not to read too much, but sometimes I just can't resist. I've heard about this one, my guess is Dany will be riding one, Jon the other and the third one ??? .
Well, she's having a hard time with her rebels teenagers dragons, not sure what to expect about it...
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteThey just killed dozens if not hundreds of undead to barely escape only to have Ser Chillalot raise his arms and raise the dead.along with them. Serious mic drop moment.
That'd be a good one. I saw this just as a picture over on the reddit page.

O_O
ReplyDeleteok that was awesome.
The son of the dragon doesn't need dragon glass.
ReplyDeleteI am lost for words here. OK taking a deep breath. That was an incredible episode of Game of Thrones, of TV in general. It is everything that S5 had been lacking so far and everything I love about the show.
ReplyDelete+ Dany and Tyrion, I have been anxiously awaiting their scenes since they met last week.
Jon wasn't hit in the books. So he also wasn't in the series. The Knight's king recognized him as his enemy.
ReplyDeleteBest episode of the season for sure. Loved the ending sequence with the White Walkers which instantly becomes one of the finest battle sequences on the series and the scenes with Tyrion and Dany were awesome. Great episode! Hopefully things will only get better from here.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode!
ReplyDeleteSo. Is everyone who felt this season was slow and boring and wouldnt amount to anything feeling pretty stupid right about now??
ReplyDeleteAnd people make such a big deal about The Walking Dead,Pfff! They have nothing on The White Walkers!!!
ReplyDeleteSo THAT's where all the CGI budget went.
ReplyDeleteHis sword is made from Valarian steel.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why there are people who voted awful this episode..Even I who's very hard to please and always find something to complain about, liked it..I even didn't mind seeing Dany on screen this time xD..Sure, that quote about breaking the wheel, is as stupid as she is, but with Tyrion's help, the scenes were bearable..As long as she takes that little screen time and the majority of the episode takes place in the North where the most important stuff happen, just like it happened on this episode, I don't see why should anyone not like it...Something tells me, you're not gonna like it the next seasons a lot..The North is the heart of the story..It's where the mythology of the series is important and where all the major events supposed to take place.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why you're telling this to me...I know...I just mentioned the legend of the last hero who had a dragonsteel sword (Valyrian steel) during the long night..And by true sword, I was referring to Blackfyre. The sword of Kings.
ReplyDeleteThat. Was. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteDidn't know the nickname was dragonsteel so I got the impression that you were serious about it being a magical sword. Just wanted to clear that up, which was apparently not needed.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the story behind Blackfyre, can't remember hearing about it before.
oh xD..But it is a magic sword, forged in the fires of Valyria with spells and god knows what else.
ReplyDeleteBlackfyre was one of the swords the Targs brought with them from Valyria. It was the sword of Aegon of conqueror which used to be passed from King to King, until it was given to first blackfyre bastard if I recall..It is considered to be lost.
I would not say it was ever boring, but I would still consider it a very transitional season for the show as a whole.
ReplyDeleteHasn't the art of making Valyrian steel been lost through the ages? ;)
ReplyDeleteTy for the info, would be interesting if Blackfyre came into play before the end.
ReplyDeleteNot ''no one'', ''someone else''. ;)
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of little differences, especially since one can argue we in some cases are in uncharted territory on both fronts (the film and the novels) and because there are already some differences between the novels and books, including event history order as next season may bring the other Greyjoy plot into the series, as the new casting calls may suggest.
ReplyDeleteI also think that "transformation" via magic is thematic.
ReplyDeleteHave a vision of the past, be reincarnated, or have read about how in a book :p
I always thought running Walkers (that sounds like an oxymoron) were lame. I can forgive this show for doing them, though, since they're not just zombies but ~magical~ zombies!
ReplyDeleteThey would still miss the material to forge a Valyrian sword...Right on they can re-forge an actual actual, not create one from scratch.
ReplyDeleteAnd I doubt the children know anything about that. Don't forget they never worked any kind of metal.
I really hope you are right about Bran making a surprise appearance xD.
Only 2 episodes left, i wonder if that's all the fighting we're gonna get.
ReplyDeleteVery True, I'm just saying there are ways were it could come back into play. Being a greenseer for instance could lead one to materials needed, should they exist somewhere...
ReplyDeleteyou are right :D..Everything is possible in theory.
ReplyDeleteGunk,Gunk! ;)
ReplyDeleteThat was an incredible episode. Hands down best episode of the season and one of the best of the series. There wasn't one scene or moment that I didn't love.
ReplyDeleteDany and Tyrion together?
Kinda figure as much, there was too much emphasis on "valerian steel"
ReplyDeleteWe were too ........ so much so that we reached it immediately !
ReplyDeleteWinter is no longer Coming ................
ReplyDeleteWinter Is HERE
FINALLY, Game of Thrones is back!
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to be leave that 1% voted poor, what the heck were they watching because this was the best episodes of the season.
ReplyDeleteYes! I don't know if my heart can handle another ep like this
ReplyDeleteI have to ask, why did you hate the zombies? I love the White Walkers and can't wait to see them again! I was wondering if Jon would survive the battle...
ReplyDeleteThey are not at all how I pictured them from reading the books or how the TV viewers were introduced to them in Season 1.They went from lumbering, but hard to kill mindless wights to Harryhausenesque speedsters that remind me more of The Evil Dead than GRRM's wights.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong,...
I loved the battle, but I just do not like how D&D portray either the wights or the Others/ White Walkers. They made the wights more deadly and the White Walkers less deadly than they should be.
You have a good point here. I haven't read the books yet, I think I'll wait until the series is over.
ReplyDeleteVanity Fair, I'm not sure about it, posted an article talking about a theory that Dany is probably going to be the Westeros "only hope" because if the dragon glass, valyrian (dragon?) steel can kill the White Walkers, maybe the Dragon Fire can kill them too? Anyway, I just a theory that I read, so pardon me if I'm not making any sense!
You make perfect sense. :)
ReplyDeleteWith so much time between books (as much as 5 or 6 years sometimes) fans come up with a lot of theories!
ReplyDeleteDanni and ehr quest for teh Iron throne will get her kill. She should trust Tyrion.
lol - I say keep'me coming !
ReplyDelete♡'d it !!
My theory is that the 7 kingdoms will be united under the Starks and Targaryens. For them to survive the White Walkers they will need the dragons and the stark wolves and the abilities that come with that connection.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the downfall of house Stark that seems like a very satisfying ending.
Very cool scene. And .... You spelled it correctly. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd nobody back home is going to believe it until its too late!
ReplyDeleteThat's true, I try not to read too much, but sometimes I just can't resist. I've heard about this one, my guess is Dany will be riding one, Jon the other and the third one ??? .
ReplyDeleteWell, she's having a hard time with her rebels teenagers dragons, not sure what to expect about it...
The wolves can do something about the White Walkers too? That would be great!
ReplyDelete
