Pitch Your Show - Summer, Part E (Stargate - Younger)

20 Jun 2015

It's that time. We've come to the final segment of this, the first summer edition of Pitch Your Show. I want to thank everyone who nominated the 87 shows represented here. Your nominations were passionate, interesting, and persuasive. I had great fun reading them and was inspired to add several shows to my to-watch list. Again I wish we could have put all nominations in the articles. If you'd like to read them all, please click on the link to the spreadsheet below. I'd also like to thank everyone who commented on the posts. It's been fun sharing a love of TV and some great discussion with you. This is my favorite thing about SpoilerTV. We may like different shows and we may come at TV differently, but we can still have a fun, respectful, in-depth conversation. It's a blessing to find that on the internet and I appreciate you all. As we end this article until next year, I hope you have found some good new shows to watch. Let me know how your summer TV viewing is going and as always, happy viewing.

Shameless plug - On June 28th or 29th, look out for nominations to open in the Character Cup. That's the annual contest I run for SpoilerTV and if you liked the discussion here, you will love it. Not only do you get to show your love for your favorite characters, but every day we have a different TV Talk Topic to inspire conversation. If you have a topic you'd love to discuss during the contest, either put it in the comments below or e-mail me at dahne@spoilertv.com I can't wait for the contest and the discussion to start.

Stargate:

***Nominated by SGU - My favourite sci-fi franchise of all time, Stargate is spread across 3 series (plus an animated series) named Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. The 3 shows all add up to 17 seasons (354 episodes) and 2 TV movies. Stargate SG-1 (10 seasons and 2 movies) and Stargate Atlantis (5 seasons) are similar in tone and format. Both are lighthearted, procedural and have a wonderful cast with some of my favourite comedic moments from any show, especially from Richard Dean Anderson! Although neither got the ending that was planned, both have a proper ending with full closure. Stargate Universe (2 seasons), my favourite of the 3, was more of a space opera along the lines of Battlestar Galactica, much more serialized and character driven than its predecessors. It too had an excellent cast that included Robert Carlyle who people may know now from Once Upon a Time. It also had some of the most beautiful visuals I've seen from any show and truly thought provoking stories. Stargate Universe did not get a proper ending and ends with a cliffhanger, although in my opinion, a very satisfying one.

State of Affairs:

***Nominated by Preston Pagel - Many people say that Katherin Heigl is the downfall of this show but I feel that she is what makes the show great as the lead character. The show also has a great plot and the writers do a great job wring the script for the show.

***Nominated by Dahne – State of Affairs had its ups and downs but it didn’t deserve the hate it got because of the lead actress. I found it to be interesting with good twists and some excellent acting. The interaction between Charlie and PotUS was fantastic. The secondary characters got some good story lines as well, even though I wish Syd and Mo had been used more.

Supernatural:

***Nominated by Karishma Kher - It teaches one never to give up, that no matter how big a problem appears to be, there is always a way out. It also redefines the term 'family'. It teaches one that family does not necessarily mean blood related. On the contrary blood relations are just the beginning and that the term family has a much larger and deeper meaning as depicted in the show. Moreover it covers all the popular genres: action, comedy, humour, tragedy, drama and suspense. Watching Jensen and Jared is just a marvelous feast for the eyes. What more could one ask for????

***Nominated by Carlynn - It is a story about angels and demons fighting with the human race right in the middle of it. It starts out with a family helping the world survive by taking on the problems that come. The show starts out slow but picks up with new stories every week. They are on break right now but will start the 11th season in the fall. Besides the main actors are great in the show and off showing to "Always Keep Fighting" in whatever you do in life.

***Nominated by Lori - How many of us love to watch family at its best and worst? Hmmm, ALL OF US! How many of us love to watch heroes who are not only genuine and emotional, but also hard, tender, ambivalent and way too invested when necessary? Hmmm, ALL OF US! How many of us love to have a hero that we can relate to and put on a pedestal at the same time? ALL OF US! Well have I got the show for you! Supernatural stars two brothers who would and have died for each other, gone to hell for each other and saved the world more than once. Throw in angels, demons, Satan, The King of Hell and God’s scribe and you have a show that has something for everyone! You will gasp, cry, laugh, cover your eyes, root for the heroes and at times the bad guys, and at the end of the hour you will be exhausted, exhilarated, sad yet hopeful, glad yet weepy. And to top it all off…four of the most attractive and sexy actors you will ever see. Yes all this one hour a week every Wednesday on the CW and 4 hours a day every Mon - Fri on TNT. If that is still not enough…Netflix and DVD! Trust me; it’s more than well worth your time. P.S. keep refreshments and lots of tissues handy. You will need them! :)

Surface:

***Nominated by Freda - I wish more people had watched this when it was first on. It is an older series about multiple people discovering a giant ocean monster. It has a Lost-like mystery to it. Lake Bell plays a young marine biologist single mom. She does a great job. Carter Jenkins and Jay R. Ferguson also act in this series. Jenkins also does a good job; Ferguson was OK. The series’ main characters are mostly split up until their stories converge at the very end. However, this doesn't take away from the series and the characters‘ convergence is believable and awesome. The series does suffer from some plot holes and poor dialogue. The ending is a cross between a cliff hanger and series ending (think Heroes). All that said, this was the best sci-fi show of 2005/6 season. Similar shows: Invasion, Threshold, Godzilla.

Switched at Birth:

***Nominated by Nancy - Great show for hearing people and especially for deaf people.

The Twilight Zone:

***Nominated by Angela (edited for length) - I could go with the simple fact that this show is a classic, but it's so much more than that. The writing was inventive and creative. For those who like a good, strong twist in their stories, this series was chock full of those. They dealt with topics that were supernatural or sci-fi in nature, but which still managed to deal with real-world issues, remaining relevant and sending a strong message. Even now, the topics the show covered (war, racism, sexism, mob mentality, government, abuse of power, etc.) are still quite relevant. Also the show has been referenced and parodied numerous times, and remains influential to so many current shows. I imagine if you were to ask people who work for supernatural/sci-fi/fantasy series running now, they'd acknowledge this show was an influence. The stories were also always suspenseful and creepy as well. Be it a story of a woman having a dream about being led to a morgue, a woman seeing a hitchhiker constantly follow her on a road trip, an alien invasion intending to "help" humanity or a man seeing a monster on the wing of a plane, the show always did a great job of telling spooky stories surrounding age-old fears, allowing viewers' imaginations to go wild and consider sleeping with their lights on. The acting was always top-notch as well. It's such a thrill to see some of the best actors and actresses of the 20th century show up here, sometimes more than once, even! Often times this show was among their first appearances on TV, so it's great to see them before they were famous. The show had a strong stable of writers too. Charles Beaumont, a notable writer, worked on the show, and of course, the show's host, Rod Serling, was a key writer. These men and the other writers clearly had a strong love of words, of imagery. They wrote in an intelligent manner and treated their audience like smart viewers.

Speaking of Serling, he was the perfect host. He had a clear vision of what he wanted it to be, had a commanding presence, and knew how to draw people in week in and week out. It should be noted this is an anthology series so there's obviously no season-long story arcs, and while actors may appear multiple times, they play different people each time, so for those who don't like standalone story series, this might not work for you. The show can also be quite preachy with its messages. VERY preachy. It's got a liberal bent so those who aren't as liberal may be turned off. Even those who are might be turned away from the preachiness, but if you chalk the preachiness up to Serling's passion for using TV to inform and entertain as well as seeing the series as a chance for him to air his frustrations with the country at that time, it makes sense and is more understandable. Some of the latter seasons can be a little more hit-and-miss too in terms of quality. The fourth season had hour-long episodes and while many actually, it's clear the half hour format was ultimately a better way to go. And yes, it is filmed entirely in black and white but this actually serves the show quite well. It adds to the creepiness and otherworldly nature of the stories and the show's premise. If those issues are all the criticism, though, that should be a sign of how great this show is. For people who want to check out shows from before their time, those nostalgic for shows from their younger years, or people who love sci-fi programming, you really can't go wrong with "The Twilight Zone". It's worth your time and attention.

Under the Dome:

***Nominated by Sophia - It is a really interesting show. You will grow to love the show just like I did and anyone else who started watching it from the beginning.

Unforgettable:

***Nominated by Mel G - After being cancelled, then revived, then cancelled and finally picked up by another channel, Unforgettable has returned. It's an awesome crime show with a main character that has a photographic memory. Even though we see shows like this sometimes, it stands out and appeals to a lot of people.

The Vampire Diaries:

***Nominated by Okeke Nwabueze – This show has cool storylines, supernatural drama, action, suspense, romance, and the unbreakable bond between the Salvatore brothers and Elena Gilbert.

***Nominated by Jon - - The first three seasons are quite good and TVD's villains are pretty much always great. Season 6 was good, too.
- The doppelganger thing is so interesting in the first 2 seasons with Nina Dobrev doing an awesome job of portraying both Elena and her ancestor Katherine.
- The second and third seasons see the arrival of the Originals in Mystic Falls. If you're familar TVD's spin-off The Originals, TVD could offer some more info about these characters.
- Good-looking cast! This is the CW after all.
- Some really good flashbacks with great costumes!
- Great use of songs. I've discovered many songs thanks to this show.

VEEP:

***Nominated by Folie-lex - While one might think that just because the show takes place in DC it's about American politics, that couldn't be more far from the truth. I think the writers and cast have explained it best when they said it's not about the politics or ideals at all. This is a show about political behaviour. It's about the people who are ambitious and crazy enough to get into politics and the means & machinations they need to maneuver themselves through to get the job done...while striking their own egos in the process of course. It's a smart and intelligent comedy, with interesting and incredibly flawed characters which you just can't help but love anyway (and in the hands of a less competent cast they would be so unlikeable). Also they spew such well crafted insults that might compare to the Shakespearean language, which is always a perk.

Veronica Mars:

***Nominated by Freda - This series is about a young high school girl trying to solve her best friend's murder. It was the first series I marathoned. My roommate and I would go to school and work in the day. Then we would come home and watch it all night. It is filled with snarky dialogue, lovable characters and thrilling suspense. The final third season dropped the ball in quality because it couldn't decide on a main big bad, but the first season was one of the most well done seasons ever IMHO. Fans of this series loved it so much that after ten years of it being off the air, they paid for a movie through the largest Kickstarter ever at the time. This probably tells you more about the series than I ever possibly could.  Trailer

Wayward Pines:

***Nominated by Arbios - It's creepy.

***Nominated by SGU - This being one of the first shows of the summer, I went into it not expecting much, just something to pass the time until more shows started. It turned out to be such a unique show filled with mystery and twists that you will never see coming, and I mean that. It has so many truly jaw dropping moments, especially episode 5 when we finally get some answers. Matt Dillon is great in the lead role and it has some great, but creepy, characters too. Overall it's a great, twisty, and suspenseful show with its fair share of creepy moments.

White Collar:

***Nominated by Freda - Why watch White Collar? Well, I could tell you about the very good looking leads, the fun thefts scenes, the exciting and sneaky catch the bad guy scenes, or the snappy dialogue, but instead I am going to talk about the amazing characters. Peter Burke is an FBI agent who believes not only in second chances (and 3rd and 4th...) but also in people. He honestly tries to do the right (and legal) thing. He is one of the only characters on TV to have a happy, healthy and stable marriage. He caught the famous art thief Neal Caffrey. Neal Caffrey, loosely based on Frank Abagnale, is probably the best con man and art thief in their world. He believes in love and would go to the end of the world for his friends. Neal is working off his debt to society by helping Peter Burke solve art crimes. Mozzie is Neal's partner in crime, who didn't meet a conspiracy he didn't like, and might be one of the smartest criminals in NYC. Together they create an amazing show that will have you so wrapped up in the craziness you can't help but sit on the edge of your seat. One downside to White Collar is that like The Mentalist, it gets old that Neal Caffrey can solve every problem. The FBI is sometimes viewed as inept and they hardly ever wear gloves.

You're the Worst:

***Nominated by Luana - There's something about antisocial people who hate everything but somehow love each other that I just love. It's really funny and plays a lot with love for hatred. It’s definitely worth a try.

Younger:

***Nominated by Luana - This comedy is really charming, though everything with Sutton Foster in it is. The way she delivers the funny lines just makes them hilarious. The characters are funny and you care for what happens to them. It only has half-hour episodes so, why not give the pilot 20 minutes to interest you?

***Nominated by Dahne - Younger is one of the few new comedies I liked this year, based on a 40-something woman pretending to be in her 20's in order to get a job in the publishing world after her divorce. Along the way she falls for a young tattoo artist and makes friends with an up and coming publishing exec while staying with an old friend in Brooklyn. Even better than the laughs were the intergenerational bonds between women on this show. They are not stabbing each other in the back to get ahead or wasted in some pointless love triangle. Instead they are supporting each other and creating strong relationships. It's a refreshing look at females in comedy and as an almost 43 year old, I appreciate the age humor.

  2. Thanks. I look forward to this article because I always get to hear about shows I missed and it's fun to see fans' passion about their show. Thanks for letting us do this.

  3. Nice pitch for Younger. I love that show, Sutton Foster is great. The whole cast does a great job. Such a fun show to watch.

  4. I'm really surprised noone wrote a pitch for Unreal. That show has really grown on me, Shiri Appleby is freaking hilarious. The whole cast really brings it in this show. I hate reality tv and this show shows why. Every major character on this show has a purpose, which I like. I don't like when shows have useless characters taking up screentime. The show is deffiantly not for everyone, with the content and what not. But it is for sure to give you a laugh.

  6. Thank you for doing this Dahne it was a lot of fun. There are quite a few shows today that I watch/watched:

Stargate - This was so difficult to pitch since there's just so much material to talk about, I think I had a lot of nonsense in there which Dahne thankfully took out! If you think you're interested in it but the length is putting you off it's the kind of show you can dip in and out of.

Supernatural - I don't watch this anymore but I used to really enjoy it, it's definitely a show that should appeal to a lot of people and have something for everyone.

Under the Dome - For all the hate this show gets I still enjoy it. It's a nice 'switch off your brain' show which I really need in the middle of these dark and serious shows I watch. It has a lot of mystery to it and twists that keep me entertained.

The Vampire Diaries - I'll admit to skipping season 4 and 5 of this show but I really enjoyed the rest of it! It has a lot of characters I love and some great storylines. For me it really redeemed itself in season 6.

Veep - I only started this show recently but loved it, I'm currently on season 2, it's so much funnier than I expected it to be.

Wayward Pines - My pitch is already up there, I hope people check it out.

I added Bates Motel and Perception to my watchlist thanks this :) I'm watching season 1 of Bates Motel atm and I watched the pilot for Perception earlier and enjoyed it.

I'm looking forward to the Character Cup and especially the TV Talk Topics :)

  7. I was surprised to enjoy that show as much as I did.

  8. When the nominations closed, only one episode of UnReal had aired. I'm glad you are liking it. I tried the pilot and it wasn't for me. I did like Odd Mom Out though which feels like a fictional parody of the Real Housewives franchise.

  9. I hadn't even heard of it until a screener came to SpoilerTV. Since no one else wanted it, I got to write the previews and I was soon hooked. It's a different kind of comedy and I grew to really enjoy all the characters. Well except Thad. He's still a douche.

  10. Nope, I didn't edit your Stargate nomination outside of the formatting, small word changes, spelling, and grammar stuff I do with all of them. This is all you and I think you did a great job.

Thanks for doing the Wayward Pines pitch. I really appreciate it. Glad you found a couple of new shows to watch and I'm really delighted that you liked the pilot of Perception. Thanks for all your discussion. I can't wait to continue chatting over the TV Talk Topics too.

  11. Oh, for some reason I thought I wrote a load of randomness, in that case it didn't turn out as bad as I thought, I'll take that bit out of the comment.

No problem on the Wayward Pines pitch, it was one I was thinking of pitching originally so I was glad to do it :)

  12. I wish I had watched Un-real before the nominations because I would have definitely nominated it. It wasn't really on my radar, but I happened to catch one episode by accident and it is now one of my favorite new shows. Interesting characters, great acting. And this is the kind of show that will appeal (for different reasons) to viewers, regardless of whether or not they like or dislike reality shows.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Also within these letters: Trophy Wife. Watch it. Please.

  14. I binge-watched "Younger" last week and really enjoyed it. It has a lot of hilarious moments and I love the relationship between the lead female characters. I agree with your comment about the lack of backstabbing among the women being a major plus. The show is set in a competitive workplace environment, and I'm just glad that the writers avoided going that route.

    ReplyDelete
  15. First of all, thank you Dahne and all the people who submitted their favorite shows, it's been fun reading all of your pitches, and now I have a lot of new shows to watch (although I shouldn't be thanking you for that last part :P)

Oh Stargate, my favorite franchise ever, I think I saw every episode of SG-1 and Atlantis at least 4 or 5 times, and I never get tired of them.

Veronica Mars, like Freda said, the fact that a movie was made paid by the fans after years of being off the air, tells you how good the show was.

And Supernatural, I used to love you, now I'm used to you, honestly, it should have ended a few seasons ago, but I keep coming back to it, I think if it weren't for the characters and the actors who played them, SPN would have ended long ago. The first 5 seasons are the best, the 4th being my favorite.

White Collar is already on my list. I heard it's really good.

I started watching Aquarius last night, saw 3 episodes, so far so good. The Last Ship is next.

  18. We finally crossed the finish line! Thanks so much for doing this Dahne :-)

None to add from this group as most of these I have already watched or tried already - so just a few thoughts to add...

Stargate: SG-1 is my favorite show. Ever. It is the only show to date that I faithfully watched live every week during the entirety of it's run. I know 10 seasons sounds daunting but the world building alone is worth the investment. Of course, Richard Dean Anderson's snark is definitely a bonus! I own all the seasons on DVD (Atlantis too) as well as all the movies (the original and the two SG-1 movies) and will randomly watch a season - it's a ton of fun to see guest/recurring actors show up that are in some of my favorite shows today!

Supernatural - I used to love this show and have been to several cons. Unfortunately, the Carver years have not impressed me so it is now regulated to the "binge when I have time" pile but the first five seasons are phenomenal. There are a few episodes in the first few seasons that still freak me out even though I've seen it a dozen times!

Veronica Mars - if you like iZombie, you will like VM. Great cast, tight storytelling (well, at least in S1/S2) and snark aplenty.

White Collar: I found this show because of STV (one of the competitions I think) and have been watching it over the last three months. I am now almost half way thru S4 and I am still in love with it. I love the characters, the heart and the snappy dialogue. Freda is right, sometimes I'd like Peter to figure it out before Neal more often than what has been written and the gloves thing sticks out every now and then but for the most part, the relationship development far outweighs these minor drawbacks.

Well, can't wait to start the weekend and dive into some new shows. New shows added because of this series of articles include:

    Aquarius
    Banshee
    BSG
    Black Mirror
    Chosen
    Chicago Fire
    Chicago PD
    Crossing Lines
    Fringe
    Grace & Frankie
    In The Flesh
    The Last Ship
    Masters of Sex
    The Musketeers
    Perception
    Sense8

  20. In January, I came up with a parody pitch for a show called 20ish on another site. The show details a 40-something year old man who has kids and suffered from a recent divorce. He moves to New York City where he pretends he is in his 20s again in order to get back "on the market", if you will.

Wow. Maybe I'll have to watch Younger and see if my idea is actually funny! Seems similar in premise, at least (well, flipped genders).

    ReplyDelete
  21. Absolutely 100% percent, a million times YES for White Collar. I could not pitch a better show. (I mean, I could've pitched my favourite show, House, but it's not like it's an unpopular show.) White Collar has something for everyone and it was an amazing ride that would only be made better by getting a movie set in Paris.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Check out White Collar! (I seem to recall you like Suits. They're kind of similar, but I like White Collar even better. Amazing show, I think you'd enjoy it.)

    ReplyDelete
  23. White Collar is AMAZING!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Season 4 of White Collar is a tricky one. I do enjoy elements of the overall story-arc, and most of the procedural cases. But sometimes I felt like they could do more with it. Same goes for Season 5, even more so. But i don't want to spoil anything. It's still such a fantastic show.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was hoping when they learned they cheated on each other that they would break up. Oh well. There's always next season.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I hope you nominate it next summer. I'm already anticipating all the new shows to put on my to-watch list.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Trophy Wife would have been an excellent show to pitch. I still can't hear I Saw the Sign without breaking out laughing. That Christmas special was so nutty and so fun.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, another Younger fan! This show really surprised me with how much I liked it since I was unsure about the premise. That ending to the second episode of Wayward Pines had my jaw on the ground in shock. I'm behind because I've been so busy but I hope to catch up by next weekend. I hear it's even more shocking later.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And that one didn't even feature those awesome kids too much--that really was an awesome episode. And that episode repeated well on a Wednesday around Christmas time. Thanks ABC!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for adding so much to the conversation. Stargate was my last family show, one that the whole family watched together. Now my brother is married and has kids so there's not time for the whole family to come together on a weekly basis. Veronica Mars I found through the Best Show competition around the time I started here at SpoilerTV. It was fantastic and part of the reason why I like this time of year so much. I always find new shows to watch through the competitions and things like this.

Supernatural for me was at its best before the writers' strike killed the momentum of the outstanding 3rd season. It never quite recovered after that but it was still my favorite show through season 7. With Jeremy taking over and creating that disastrous season 8, I now think of this as Supernatural 2.0. It's a shadow of its former glory but at least this season I could watch it on a weekly basis. I couldn't say that about seasons 8 and 9.

So glad youa re going to try White Collar and The Last Ship. White Collar was a special favorite of mine and Mozzie is one of my very favorite characters. The Last Ship is a thrill ride with really only one bad episode. The 2-hour premiere this Sunday is amazingly movie like.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I tried White Collar before but I never got through pilot, it didn't seem like something I'd enjoy. Maybe I'll give it another go sometime though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Fair enough.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So glad you found so many shows to add to your binge list. I think you will really like aspects of Fringe like the Bishop family moments and I hope you enjoy The Last Ship so we can chat about it.

SG-1 is one of my favorite TV memories because it was the last of the shows that my family watched together. It was a Friday night tradition. As for Supernatural, watching the early seasons is like coming home to me. I know them so well that I can quote the lines with the actors so they are like comfort food to me. I will never forgive Carver for ruining my 7 year love affair with the Winchester brother saga.

  34. This is the one I am most excited about getting caught up on. It's first after the Graceland preview and Teen Wolf marathon.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ha! You should really check it out because that's pretty much what this is. The first season just ended but you can probably still catch it on the TV Land website.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hope you write pitches for Psych and Suits next year. I have caught the odd episode of Psych here and there but never the whole thing. It's another one I plan to watch sooner than later. I even bought a few seasons on DVD when they were on sale.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My favorite was Diane. That mock fight she and Kate had while the kids watched was one of the best physical comedy things I've seen. I also miss live tweeting the episodes because the cast often joined in and they were hilarious then too.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, that was an awesome scene. I can't pick a favorite (or even least favorite) character. So many sweet, quotable moments too in every episode. Reminds me of The Middle and Modern Family, not a show about a trophy wife. Wish the show runners or ABC spoke up and gave it a better, simpler name. They do realize that two of their biggest comedy hits in the past 15 years have ordinary names, no?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Cool, maybe I will. And if it turns out to be really funny, then I'll pitch 20ish as its lead-out or eventual replacement. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  40. I was too. I figured that's how it would play out, I was sadly mistaken. But like you said there's always next season.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks for putting this all together. It was lots of fun, I enjoyed being able to ramble on about shows I love, and now I have a whole new list of shows to get into. Woo!
I look forward to the character cup. That should be very entertaining :D.

  42. Psych is one of the few shows where it NEVER disappointed me. Not one season was off, not even a little bit. The finale as well is extremely satisfying. All we need now is the movie. I will definitely pitch it next time.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Dahne, thanks so much that you did all this. It was great waking up every morning and having something to read. Hopefully, we do this more often

    ReplyDelete
  44. Awesome list. Not actually seen too many of these. Stargate Atlantis is my favourite Stargate though, but SG1 and Universe are pretty good as well. Didn't like State of Affairs, loved Supernatural (apart from S6/S7 with a few exceptions and am working my way few Season 8 which is better so far), seen a few episodes of Under the Dome (need to catchup), Didn't like The Vampire Diaries (The Originals is far superior), Need to watch Veep/Veronica Mars (the movie was pretty cool, and the show has the added benefit of POI's Elias), Wayward Pines is excellent and White Collar has been on my Netflix queue for ages but not yet been watched.

Not too familiar with the others.

  45. I'm a big fan of tvd. The first three seasons were awesome . Season 4 was a little boring , and I prefer to forget season 5. The last season was pretty good though and I'm looking forward to watching season 7.
I miss White Collar so much! Neal Caffrey is a great character and his bromance with Peter Burke was wonderful. They had trust issues but in the end they would anything for each other. My favourite season is the second one.

  46. Dhane awesome work for collecting all these pitches. I ll look into them today, maybe I ll find something good for me. Will there be another edition maybe for Winter? I am so mad I have missed this.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks for doing this Dahne! It was awesome to read these pitches and I have found various shows that seem interesting to me. As far as today's list goes:

State of Affairs is one I never finished. I still have last four episodes unwatched, but I'm not sure I will ever finish it. Knowing that it ends on a cliffhanger and seeing as this show wasn't that great to begin with, I think I'll just leave it at that.
Wayward Pines is one I soon intend to start.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am so glad that you enjoyed this and that you found several shows to try. I had fun talking TV too.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It was an unfortunate title. If I didn't try to watch every pilot, I probably would have skipped this one and missed out.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Don't forget you heard about Younger here when you get famous. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. For me, the bromance between Gus and Shawn is what makes me interested in Psych. Plus of course Tim Omundsson, who is a delight in everything he does. I really want to marathon Galavant again before the season is over.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Funny, because if I watched the pilot I would have skipped it. Even though I followed ratings I really didn't give a second thought to this one, until all the commenters got really excited when it got its back 9 (and they thought it was only done because they were going to try it behind Modern Family). So by then, I watched episodes 2-6 on ABC.com, because the pilot wasn't there. The teenage girl alone would be enough for me to not watch, but thankfully she was recast and Warren was more like a Sue on The Middle than the you-know-what he was in the pilot.

There is actually a script out there for an original pilot, but the script was redone to the point where very little of the material made the actual pilot. I personally preferred that script way more than the one they aired.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am so glad you enjoyed it and thanks for all your discussion. It's been awesome chatting about TV with you. Typically I do this in midseason for low-rated shows that need more viewers so expect something around December/January.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Keith Mars is an excellent reason to watch Veronica Mars. Theirs is still one of the best father-daughter relationships I have ever seen on TV. He quickly became my favorite character. Thanks for adding The Thick of It. I had never heard of it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was so hooked after watching the first two episodes, that I stayed up last night and watched episodes 3-6, and yes, it gets even more shocking! I hope you get to catch up on the season, because it really is a terrific show. BTW, I don't know how you find the time to come up with all of these great synopses for so many shows, but we really do appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Peter and Neal are one of my favorite TV bromances too. I love how they each became a little more like each other in the end. It wasn't a one-way thing, but they both grew from each other. I also adore how well the portrayed Peter and Elizabeth's marriage. The pitch is dead right in saying that theirs is one of the few healthy and stable marriages on TV. It was a pleasure to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm glad you found us. Let me know if you are interested in watching any of the shows pitched. I love to hear what people find interesting. I always do a mid-season version of Pitch Your Show, which is usually around December or January. That one is specifically focused on low-rated shows that are currently airing. This was the first time I tried a summer version where any show is game. Since people seemed to like it, we'll likely do it next year as well.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Glad you found some good shows to try and thanks for being a part of the awesome discussion. If you decide you want to know how State of Affairs ends, let me know and I'll spoil it. I too plan on getting to Wayward Pines soon. The first 2 episodes already have me hooked.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It's not me. These are what the people who nominated them said. That's one of the best things about this article for me. I get a much more well-rounded view of shows because I get to see them from many different perspectives. I love how certain people will highlight one thing but others will highlight something else. I only nominate when I think a show's review is going to be too short to get a bigger picture.

Thanks for letting me know about Wayward Pines. I'm looking even more forward to watching it. Currently I need to watch Rizzoli & Isles, Graceland, and Teen Wolf to get some articles done. Next stop though will be Wayward Pines.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I liked the pilot enough for it to be on my radar, but it's really because I give new shows 3 episodes to win me that I stuck with it. I actually had a hard time with the recast and that was a big strike against it for me. It felt like they didn't have a grip on their own show. Eventually I got okay with it but it still irks me anytime I see the pilot clips. Warren bugged me throughout, not because of the acting, but because of the inconsistancy wiht his character. There is no way I would ever believe that Diane would have a stupid kid so sometimes they portrayed him as smart and sometimes as totally brain dead. I do wish that they would have come up with a better plan because he felt like the plot device character to me, the one who was portrayed as whatever the script wanted him to be that week. I'm actually one of the few viewers that didn't prefer the kids, although in general I liked them well enough too.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Haha. I'll thank you personally when 20ish wins its Emmy lol

    ReplyDelete
  62. Well I think that's why the cast change was so important, to have Diane actually have a smart daughter. I think overall the acting was really good considering a good half of them had littke to no background on a comedy show before.

    ReplyDelete
  63. The only thing about season 4 that is not sitting well with me so far is how much Peter risked to protect Neal at the end of S3 and beginning of S4 and Neal still continues to do stupid shit. I get that he's a con and will always be a con but so far in S4, the friendship that was built in the first three season seems to be more one sided than before. The episode I watched last nights seems to be turning that around a bit so I hope they stay that course.

I heard that White Collar has a satisfying ending so I'm looking forward to seeing how it all ends up (I know we haven't heard the last of Kramer) - season 6 posts on Netflix (US) over the Fourth of July and since I have a long weekend for the holiday, I will probably finish the series :-)

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'll likely finish White Collar over the 4th of July weekend so I need another finished show to take its place in the rotation and right now, I can't decide between Fringe and BSG. Knowing me, I'll probably start both!

I loved the Stargate movie but I gave SG-1 a chance only because of Richard Dean Anderson (he's a MN boy so I gotta show the love for my home state). The bickering between his character and Michael Shanks' Daniel is some of the best comedy in a drama I've seen in my TV life. And Christopher Judge's Teal'c was like an early, male version of Ziva - kick ass but clueless with American/Earth customs :-) I miss that show - it saddens me that nothing from this franchise is on the air right now!

I blame Gamble for damaging my love affair with SPN but ya, Carver destroyed it. The only ting that keeps it in the "binge pile" is my respect for Jared and Jensen. Perhaps one day I'll do a complete series rewatch and I'll be able to appreciate the later seasons more (like 10 years from now when the whole "absence make the heart grow fonder" thing could potentially kick in).

    ReplyDelete
  65. Awesome! Yeah, personally I prefer S4 to S5, and the finale was satisfying to some degree. I'm still kind of in denial that it's over, and I desperately require a movie of some sort! :D

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with you a trillion percent. Shawn and Gus are my favourite relationship on that show, and by far are the most important. I love Shawn and Juliet too, and certain others like Shawn and Lassie and of course Shawn and Henry, and even some rare ones like Lassie and Vick and Henry and Vick (I'm an extreme multishipper on this show). And yes, Timmy O is an absolute delight on Psych and even more so on Galavant. I will definitely marathon Season 1 before Season 2 airs.

  68. Thanks for running this Dahne and posting the 5 epic articles this year. That was a lot of shows!

Today seconding two comedies Veep - which truly is the funniest show on TV, brutal and hilarious and makes you think about politics in a whole new light. Also You're The Worst - the anti Rom-Com well Rom-Com! The main couple defy the expectations of the genre and even though they are terrible people you end up falling in love with them by the end of S1.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thank you Dahne for your work !!! I love all seasons of SUPERNATURAL that is amazing and wonderful !!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I've already read how it ends. Nick dies, Charlie quits and kills Omar Fattah. In the final scene she hears a missile or something like that. That's about it right?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Stargate SG-1, SGA minus Universe as it was completely crappy. Supernatural prior to crappy Carver era. Same with White Collar minus NBC muck up and Veronica Mars. Unforgettable is pointless as all it is a woman who doesn't forget. Dome is too much Lost part deux. Vampire Diaries initials says it all VD. As for younger it's funny but not in the way intended because it's just plain sad and the reason why tv viewership is down in the last decade.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Great job as always Dahne Thanks for your hard work, some shows I already watch and I'm very much open for trying a lot more on the list, and for the upcoming competitions looking forward to them, I was thinking of something for the Tv topic, I was curious do you think this could be open for discussion, what network tv show would thrive better on cable? A show that could get away with so much more without network censors, would it be something that could be discussed indepth?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Before I post my usual never-ending comment with overall thoughts on today's shows, I would like to once again thank Dahne for doing this. This was an amazing thing for me, all phases of it! Submissions, reading, actually picking up shows (I am halfway through The Last Ship now!), commenting, discussing! So much comes from this! Thanks a lot, I really love this! And thanks to everyone who was kind about my submissions (sorry about the overload of them!!) and to everyone who submitted pitches as a whole!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Okay, on to the final batch of shows:
    - Stargate does sound interesting, especially the Atlantis version which SGU says to be less procedural but I don't really have the time right now to commit to such a long show. I will try to keep this in mind if I am ever looking for a long term thing because it sounds right up my alley and definitely the BSG comparison is bait to draw me in eheh:P
    - State of Affairs is one of those that I was interested in watching before it came out but which I never did because of the ratings. I appreciate the pitches you've done though and I think I would still like the show even as a one season wonder but I just don't think I will realistically ever put it above the others on my to watch list for it to ever make it. Too bad it didn't work out though, I would have liked it to succeed.
    - Because of this site, this site alone, and all the people on this site that have over the years tried to convince me to watch Supernatural, three years ago I did something which I normally don't do which was to give such a long running show a chance. Dahne was actually one of the main proponents to make it happen for me. I like it. I am not blown away by it and it feels like one of those shows in which not being part of the fandom takes a bit away from the experience. But I really like both actors and I love their relationship, so that is a huge drawn. But because this is such a long running thing, I've adopted a very weird thing with this show. For the past 3 years, each Christmas I've been binge watching one season lol. I've finished Season 3 this past Christmas. This obviously means I won't ever be fully caught up so maybe at some point I put a rush on it and try to speed it up but I actually enjoy watching this over Christmas in the winter, binge-style, so I am not sure I want to give that up. It is a weird thing for sure but it is working for me, so well!
    - Freda, congrats for that Surface pitch! I had never heard of that show but it sounds really awesome and any time Lost is mentioned on a comment is a good thing to me. It sounds right up my alley. Not really sure I can conceivably add it to my watch list and it falls into that whole "1 season wonder cancelled show" thing that makes it hard for me to prioratize it, but who knows! Too bad such a promising show (in concept at least) was canceled.
    - The pitch for The Twilight Zone is excellently done! Again, I don't really think I can add such a long finished show to my list at this point, and I am not really sure about the whole "old" aspect of it all, but maybe at some point I give it a try. This sounded really interesting!
    - I personally really enjoy Under the Dome. It gets so much hate but I find it highly entertaining. Sure enough the mid portion of Season 2 was weak but it got way better towards the end and I found the last bunch of episodes really good! It is a great show to watch in the summer and I recommend it as such.
    - Veep is the comedy I most want to watch this summer so I will certainly get it done now that I am done with Black-ish!
    - Wayard Pines is so creepy and mysterious and I LOVE it! I really wasn't expecting to enjoy it this much but it is amazing! Highly recommended to everyone! And hey, it's summer, so people don't really have that much on!
    -

    ReplyDelete
  75. I agree entirely with what you've said about Under the Dome! And about Stargate, indeed what you said resonated with me, but the length is indeed off putting to me. I am not really sure dipping in and out would work with me though. I do that with Supernatural (See my comment above) but that's an isolated case for me. So I really don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Really glad about Aquarius, like I told you somewhere else ;) I have been watching The Last Ship per recommendations from here and I am loving it!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I am happy with a lot of what has been added to your list, I am very glad! I hope you enjoy them!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I think you will really enjoy it Dahne!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Suits is awesome, such an underrated show. But it's hard to write a proper pitch for it. I will consider doing it for the next time we one one of these!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I am watching Veep very soon! It is next for me comedy wise!

    ReplyDelete
  81. The answer to your topic clearly would be Aquarius for me, without a shadow of hesitation!

    ReplyDelete
  82. If it helps you could try Stargate Atlantis first. It's less than half the length of Stargate SG-1 and still pretty procedural. It's more serialised than SG-1 for sure but mainly multi-episode arcs or storylines stretched out over multiple seasons that are only brought up once or twice a season. It also explains everything you'd need to know in the pilot really well.

Universe is almost entirely serialised and is nothing like the other 2 shows but you could jump into that first if you wanted to, it also explains everything you'd need to know in the pilot.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Thanks for the clarifications. Universe sounds more like my cup of tea for the serialization component. I watch some procedurals on my weekly rotation, but binge watch a procedural is something that really doesn't appeal to me much. We'll see what I'll do. I will let you know if I ever get around to them!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Lol, I knew the BSG comparison would get you interested! That comparison can really only be made for Stargate Universe though, the other 2 shows are more of a cross between Eureka (technology and laws of physics run amok) and Star Trek (space battles, aliens and new planets).

I can't believe you only watch one season of SPN a year! My brain just wouldn't allow me to do that. I spent most of my Summer in 2013 (wow can't believe it was that long ago) binge watching seasons 1-8, only to drop it in season 9 :/ I wasn't expecting to enjoy Pines like I am either, it was such a surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  85. It is a very odd case what I have with Supernatural indeed. I can't really explain why it has been working but the truth is that it has.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Good to hear! I have The Last Ship ready to go, once I finish Aquarius!

    ReplyDelete
  87. I think I would be able to pitch it. Still extremely disappointed with Season 4, and Season 5 sounds even more hellish.

    ReplyDelete
  88. That is a good one, the intensity of that show and of course the subject matter, that was an era that I loved, even if we dealt with psycho's like Manson I agree if that was a cable show, imagine where they could really take it, Thanks for your reply:)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Thanks :-)

I've already started Crossing Lines, Graceland (added after reading Dahne's comments on it - I must have missed it in the original pitch) and Fringe.

I like Crossing Lines and Graceland but not something I can binge watch. More like an episode or two a week. But Fringe...I'm so hooked it's ridiculous. I love the characters but every scene with the cow is my favorite!

I was going to start BSG but only the original series is on Netflix so I need to do some investigating. But until then...MORE FRINGE!

    ReplyDelete
  90. I want to say that you should try to hurry up on BSG but Fringe is so good that I can't argue with that. Where are you right now? Just so that you know, Season 1, while not bad, is widely considered the weakest by the majority of the fans. When you get to the late portion of Season 2 and then to the ASTONISHING Season 3 you will get your mind blown, seriously, be ready. Anna Torv will rock your world.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I could find BSG on any of my existing streaming services so I may have to put that on hold for now - I find it annoying that Netflix has the original but not the reboot. Not even the miniseries.

I watched the first four episodes of S1 last night and as soon as I'm done with dinner I'm hoping to get at least another three in before bed!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Wow if you are only in the early portion of Season 1, which was the weakest for me, and you are already so hooked you are in something great. You will get blown away with what is to come. Let me know how is it going for you! I am really interested

    ReplyDelete
  93. And now that I finally got the final segment I can properly say: Thanks so much Dahne for doing this and for all your hard work.

Also thanks everyone who pitched their shows! Lovely reads all around!

    Now! On to the list...

Stargate is such a big universe, it feels like a huge commitment to get into it... but because even out of context I have really enjoyed the stray episodes that I've caught here and there, at some point I do want to give it a proper shot.

The prominent excellent feedback I hear with respect to Younger have really sold me on this show, so it's definitely earned a spot on my list. Plus I'll watch Debbie Mazzar in anything (I know she's not the lead, okay...? But as I said: anything!)! And the rest of the cast is pretty solid too...

You're The Worst is THE best!!! This is what real epic love stories are made of!

Wayward Pines was such a pleasant surprise! I'm glad it got some love. Super creepy, beautifully made, interesting story... A great summer show!

Always happy to see Veronica Mars, White Collar and SPN get some love.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Yeah, it's a shame not a lot of episodes had aired when this was running. I'd definitely happily recommend UnReal. It's a very interesting, fun and (good) campy little show!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I've been meaning to! I swear I have!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Forget soon: watch it NOW!
(I say this because I know we kinda like a lot of the same stuff, and I freakin' LOVE Veep! In case my pitch didn't make that clear enough...)

    ReplyDelete
  97. *nods vigorously*

Clearly I agree with you about VEEP... ;P

But I'm also 100% with you over You're the Worst. And I was totally swept away by it, when I was least expecting it, if I'm being completely honest here.
When the synopsis came out during development and it was something like "a comedy about two horrible & dysfunctional people who try to make a relationship work", I remember thinking "That doesn't sound like fun at all."
And then for some reason I watched the pilot, mostly out of morbid curiosity I guess, only to find out that this show was so amazing! Honest... and genuine... and funny...
And you know what I figured out? The synopsis lied. They aren't horrible people... They are just real people...
You call it the anti-Rom-Com Rom-Com. And that's a pretty spot on description. But if someone asked me, I'd refer to it as "what Rom-coms would look like if they tried to be at all realistic." I honestly can't stress how great a show it is!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yeah I remember being disinterested when You're The Worst premiered but after a few episodes aired I was curious about the reviews and so gave it chance and was so surprised by how much I fell in love with Jimmy and Gretchen. I think having a sympathetic character in Edgar really helps as well. But really I was rooting for Jimmy and Gretchen so much at the end. I'm not usually a fan of Rom-Coms,but this charmed me so much.

    ReplyDelete
  99. It really is the next comedy i will be watching i promise! You have convinced me!
