Pitch Your Show - Summer Edition - Nominations Now Closed

Jun 8, 2015

***Nominations are now closed.  Since there were so many shows nominated (woo hoo), this will now be a series of articles starting tomorrow.  Thanks to everyone who nominated!

Update (6/10) - I just want to remind everyone that this article will NOT save your favorite cancelled show.  The Powers That Be will never know it exists.  Instead of campaigning to save your show, please simply tell us why we might love it too.  I know it hurts to say goodbye to a favorite but sometimes sharing the love with others can help.

Update (6/9/15) - We now have over 200 nominations (woo hoo) with about half of them for Forever.

Update (6/8/15) - Thanks to everyone who has participated so far.  We have almost 60 shows nominated.  I love all the variety so keep nominating away.  Nominations close June 12.

For the past 2 years, I've run a special article over the midseason hiatus called Pitch Your Low Rated Show. The idea was for fans to encourage other TV fanatics to try new shows that were struggling with ratings while their favorite shows were taking a break. It proved pretty popular but I kept getting 2 requests. Many people wanted to nominate shows that have already been cancelled and some asked for it to be in summer instead since they have more time to try new shows then. Viola! The summer edition of Pitch Your Show was born. This time the show can have ended and ratings don't matter so brush off the cobwebs of your favorite TV series and help a fan out. Do you know a show that's just perfect for marathoning? Have you come across one that needs a cult following? How about a recurring show that will be airing in fall that people should get caught up on now so they can join the current season?

The whole idea behind Pitch Your Show is for people to find new shows to check out while waiting for the fall season to start. All you have to do is nominate your show with the following form and tell us why we should be watching it. The most persuasive pitches will go into the article that will be posted in a couple of weeks. (I make sure that all nominated shows are represented but if a show gets too many responses, then I put the best arguments for why to watch it in the actual article.) A link will be provided in the article so all nominations and comments can be read.

Rules:

1. You must put your name, the show, and why people should watch the show. You do NOT have to know where it is airing but it helps get more people to watch it if they know where to look. (Hint - sometimes it is easier to type your reason in a word processing program and then cut and paste it into the form, especially if it is a long response.)

2. Only scripted shows (network or cable, still airing or not). No reality TV.

3. You can submit as many shows as you wish but this is not a popularity contest so there is no need to nominate a show multiple times with the same comment. I will take the most thoughtful comments for each show nominated.

4. The purpose is to persuade others to watch your show. Saying "IT'S THE BEST SHOW EVER!!!" over and over again won't help. In fact, triple exclamations and having all letters capitalized will probably work against you. Same goes for hashtags. Instead focus on why someone who doesn't watch the show should take their precious time to try it. Enthusiasm is only good when backed by details and thoughtful discourse. If you can provide multiple reasons to watch, like good characters and great action, that is even better.

5. Nominations will remain open until June 12.

Any questions? Please leave them in the comments section below and don't forget to tell us what shows you nominated!

  1. and like every year my first thought was: "my own show?" and was about to write a plot for my OWN show :P

    ReplyDelete
  2. So what shows do you think people should try?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Please do. I have no power to make it a reality but I'd love to hear your pitch. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  4. Now that would be a really interesting poll!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I have a pitch for you ;) -->
Man or woman is suddenly extremely lucky in life.

He rises constantly in his social and work hierarchy. He is constantly getting more power, money, fame and love then he thought was possible.
But then he notices cracks in the facade, strange things happening around him. Was this just luck? Is he being manipulated on a huge scale?

The show would be about the main character slowly discovering who is doing this and why. He would need an interesting back ground and probably a career in politics or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  6. A bit like the Truman Show?
    Love your idea :D

    ReplyDelete
  7. lol
don't worry, I won't annoy you with my ideas :P
Since I'm shooting my first feature next week and have my first animated show out since a few days I'm good creatively anyway ;)

  8. I wrote some incoherent gibberish down for TO, couldn't think of another show I would feel comfortable endorsing these days.

I wanted to do Arrow but I'm still incredibly bitter about the season and don't feel like I want people to fall into the same trap I did. The Flash is fun and all but not really a must-watch while other shows (Constantine, Forever) are roads that eventually end

  9. Ha, never seen it, but no. I was more thinking along the lines of some conspiracy to blackmail or influence him somehow.

  10. My Recommendation for this summer-Daredevil(Netflix-13 episodes) Status-Renewed for 2nd season.
    Reasons-
1.Amazing acting from the entire cast-Especially Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock & Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin.Everyone brought their A game here.
2.Outstanding action sequences & production values.
3.Every episode gets better than the the preceding one.It will satisfy both type of fans-Comic nerds & non-comic book fans.
4.Dark,Gritty & Realistic tone compared to the MCU shows.
5.Unpredictable twists, the writers are absolutely fearless. The first time we feel for both the hero & the villain equally.
6.Fantastic use of flashback sequences to enrich the narrative even more rather than becoming a distraction or sore sticking point.

  11. mh, I love this. You should really get behind and write a script :D

some tips for the start: break your script into 120 parts with the length of two-three pages. Sort all your scenes under locations (i.E "Office", "lobby") instead of strict numbers :D

  12. I'll nominate a few, but first and foremost, The 100:
It is one of the most morally complex TV shows on the air. The characters are well defined, and developed. Some evolve from mild stereotypes to fully fleshed out characters that feel like real people. The plot is intriguing, full of surprises, and it can be both inspiring and bleak depending on what the writers aim to do. It is by far the most groundbreaking show of The CW and it is on par with the quality of cable shows such as Game of Thrones and similars.

  13. I would always be careful with being too enthusiastic about a show when pitching it, always list the positives and the negative aspects of a show. Otherwise the reader will feel like the pitch is biased and automatically avoids it.

I can only speak from experience: the reason I had a hard time getting into the 100 was because EVERYONE here was telling me how breathtaking this show is that at a certain point I felt that the show was worse than it actually is.
It's a solid show but it took me quite a while to get over all the "yay" sayers being preachy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. The thing is, it's very hard for me to be critical about The 100 because I don't find anything I don't like on the show. There are just minor complaints, but not worth to be mention.

The 100 is a show that is essentially taylor made for me; it's easier for me to say why I love it than to point out flaws. And while your point is completely reasonable and people should be able to point out the flaws of the shows, The 100 is one of the few shows in which I have to work hard in order to find something to complain about.

What those complaints would be? Mostly that season 1 had a few kinks to work out with some episodes (episodes 2 and 8 especifically), but as a whole I found it pretty outstanding. And season 2 just blew my mind with every episode.

With almost every other show I can easily point their flaws (some of my favorites, OUAT, Revenge and The Flash have easy flaws to point), but with this one (as well with GoT and Daredevil) I just have a hard time doing so.

That being said, I think you make an excellent point. I would like to know what issues you see on The 100 :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree.The 100 & Daredevil are pretty flawless IMO too.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks for the praise, but to be honest, I don't see myself writing a 360 page script ^_^ Why 120 parts btw?

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's something that's very unprecedented with me. Even my favorite show of all time (Fringe) has flaws that are pretty easy to spot, but with The 100, GoT and Daredevil is just next to impossible for me... I mean, I can, but those issues look so small in the big spectacle of the shows that I just won't care about them

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well, your're right to some degree. It happened to me with Breaking Bad. I binge-watched the show, all 5 seasons, and I really liked it, it's unique, but I don't feel it's "THE BEST SHOW EVER" like so many people does. I think that the experience of watching some shows weekly, chating with other fans between episodes, reading theories and so on, can make you enjoy and love it more. Besides the fact that not every show is for everyone. Personal taste is a huge deal when choosing shows.

It took me 4 episodes to get into The 100, but once I did, I couldn't stop (I binge-watched the first season too) and became addicted to it, something that rarely happens to me.

The Walking Dead is an extremely popular show, and I couldn't even finish the first episode. And have no desire to watch it, so yeah, not for everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  19. TWD-I enjoyed the 1st two seasons immensely.Season 3 was average.Season 4 was painful to watch.Just stuck on Episode 5 of Season 5.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Underrated shows people should defenitely try: The 100, Agent Carter, Galavant (which I realize, may not be for everyone, but it is worth the try), Orphan Black, The Affair, Halt and Catch Fire.

Solid rated shows in need of more buzz: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fresh off the Boat and The Middle.

High rated and/or popular shows that are still worth watching: Game of Thrones, Daredevil, Orange is the New Black

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yet it still has very good ratings, right?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am obsessed about TVD but that show has so many flaws that i wouldn't recommend that myself.LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Very good? It's the highest rated show on television.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You just killed me with that XD. That has to be one of the weirdest TV relationships I've read about, being obsessed but you wouldn't recommend it to yourself. It'd be interesting to study!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have a hard time endorsing shows too but mostly because everybody likes different things. I feel like I need a caveat saying certain shows are must watches for certain types of TV viewers. From what I hear, you aren't alone with Arrow. I'm not even going to bother watching season 3 this summer like I planned because what I heard is exactly where I didn't want it to go.

Forever is currently the most nominated show so it is covered. I'm surprised The Flash hasn't been nominated yet but we're only in the first hour so I expect that to be remedied soon.

    ReplyDelete
  26. With TWD "good ratings" is an understatement

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can predict every twist 5 episodes in advance now but i still can't stop watching.Weird indeed!I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I adore Galavant and I wish more people got into it, but you're right. It isn't for everyone. The 100 and Agent Carter are solid shows too. I was thrilled that all 3 were renewed, especially with their iffy ratings. I have Halt and Catch Fire on my to-watch list this summer. Now for more time in the day.

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL Sorry, I don't know the numbers, I only knew it's doing great.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sounds very intriguing. Shadowy conspiracies (if the plot doesn't drag) tend to be a favorite. It could also take on a sci-fi twist pretty easily if a studio wanted to go that way with it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Something different from the usual-
    The Americans,Banshee,Better Call Saul,Bates Motel,True Detective,House of Cards.Outlander,Masters of Sex,Penny Dreadful & Salem.

    ReplyDelete
  32. TWD Season 1 was good, 2a was bad, 2b was good, 3a and b were good, 4a was good, 4b was disappointing, and 5 and b were great. 5 is my favorite season.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Americans and Bates Motel continue to be on my to-watch list but I never seem to get to them. My to-watch list is becoming a thing of beauty in its enormity.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great list besides Salem.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Please watch The Americans as soon as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's numbers are going through the roof. It's increasing with each season.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Halt and Catch Fire's first season is pretty addictive, but it has evident flaws; Joe is far too mysterious to be relatable at first which is a hard sell for a protagonist, and what the show attempts to do becomes clear late into the first season. And yet those first episodes were somewhat magical because I didn't know what Joe was up to and where the show was headed, but I can understand how it can be frustrating for some people.

The season 2 premiere, however, sets the show in a pretty straightforward path that allows for a lot of narrative momentum and it puts the characters on very interesting positions, shifting their dynamics and making for some moments that are truly riviting. It looks like season 2 will be way better than season 1, but one can't tell just from a premiere alone, but the signs are very positive

    ReplyDelete
  38. I get that, I used to be the same but at some point I had to make myself aware of everything having flaws, even the things I personally enjoy.

Generally, people don't want to read positive, almost cheery news. It's in our nature to seek flaws to even evaluate if something is eligable. If you hear too many positive voices your mind will automatically switch to "the fanbase is biased", wich isn't wrong since we all are in some way incredibly influenced by the things we love.

My biggest flaw with the 100 is the fact that it takes itself dead serious, so serious that it leaves no room for interpretation. The sad thing is that it doesn't work with various actors, some are just, blatantly put, bad actors that attempt to portray scenes in a straight tone but just come off as stale.
And when I mean dead serious I'm not forgetting Monty and Jasper being kind of quirky at times, no, they're part of the problem. Their quirks are essentially written in to create fan-attatchment to these characters (quirky= automatically beloved, it's a cheap writing move but it works, so I can't complain) however their jokes aren't self-reflective or break the fourth wall. Their entire comedic induedos consist of pretty flat jokes, not enough to lighten the show up to compensate for bad performances.
Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't where he is today because he's a good actor, the complete opposite is the case. He's horrible but the scripts he gets and the way he delivers his lines is self reflective and comedic enough to create a good balance between his style and the products tone. I know people will disagree with me because...I always get that when talking about good looking actors: Devon Bostick and Bob Morely are so bad I generally cringe in all their scenes, whenever they open their mouths I feel the need to pull a gun to my head. I'm sorry but these two really have no place in this business. I get why Bostick keeps getting parts though (his mom is a casting director) but I'm not sure how Morely even got close to a leading part. I understand if you disagree, I often get that when criticizing generally well liked actors (Jennifer Lawrence being the most popular on my sh*tlist).

I'm glad that the 100 is going into season 3 now, the fact that a sci-fi show manages to survive these days is impressive but the sad part is that the show is only good. And the heavy hype is going to turn people off

    ReplyDelete
  39. I will finish it soon.Everyone says Season 5 is very good.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Daredevil is at teh top of my to-watch list this summer. I have watched the pilot but nothing else. I'm a little nervous going in with high expectations though because so many people are raving about it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Daredevil has its flaws, but they're really hard to notice when binge watching.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm still confused why you're not watching TO, the plots aren't convoluted, the writing is fairly good and no triangles. It might have it's horrible moments (aka. Hayley) but is otherwise a pretty strong show compared to its mothership

    ReplyDelete
  43. Devon Bostick and Bob Morely are so bad I generally cringe in all their
scenes, whenever they open their mouths I feel the need to pull a gun to
    my head. WHATTTTTTTTTTT??

    ReplyDelete
  44. If I weren't sure that The 100 was going to be so well represented, it would be the show I pitched too. Season 1, once I got to episode 5, was outstanding and then to have season 2 top it...wow. It left me speechless many times.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Shows are that are amazing, but they need more viewers. Hannibal, The Americans, The Leftovers.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Exactly. The positive things outweigh the minor flaws pretty heavily.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Even though some show may covince some watch a new show.....I won't be convince easily for any of breaking bad, the walking dead, game of throne.......

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree and Daredevil is my favorite new show this year.

    ReplyDelete
  49. As much as I loved season 1 the simple fact that it did put in villain of the week episodes (he deals with a differen baddie each episode, the russians, Madame Gao and Nobo leading up to Wesley and the Kingpin) did take out a lot of potential out of the thing.

And while the characterization of Matt and Kingpin was made with perfection other characters suffered severely. Despite getting a bit of backstory on most mains a few (most notably Ben, Wesley and to a certain point Foggy) felt flat wich stuck out even more since Matt had fantastic writing behind him.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't like Klaus at all,in fact i hate him with all my heart, even more than Tyler-If that's even possible. That should be reason enough to stop watching.

    ReplyDelete
  51. to get to two hours, you generally should count 2 pages =1 minute of screentime

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wouldn't call it villain of the week, all of them were involved with Kingpin.

    ReplyDelete
  53. From what I remember Monty and Jasper had virtually zero comedic scenes in season 2, as for the acting that's all a matter of opinion. There are actors I consider horrible that most consider amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Given the cancellation the fanbase is in full force, so obviously Forever is running, same happened with BatB and Reign last year if I remember correctly.

The Flash is doing fine ratings wise so the fandom isn't rushing to its aid. You can expect lower rated shows to show up first here ^^

    ReplyDelete
  55. This is how i felt-Episode 1 was decent.Episode 2 was mediocre.Episode 3 was above average.Episode 4-9 were exceptional.Episode 10 was very good.Episode 11 & 12 were good.Episode 13 was a fitting finale.
    Now,dive in without fear.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I loved all of the episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Did you like Klaus on TVD? Becuase I liked him on TVD but Klaus and Hayley are 2 main reasons I dropped TO.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Salem is highly niche show.I didn't like it but all my friends love it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I know a lot of people who hate it.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I hate him more than anyone else. But his siblings are just too good to ignore.
Plus: the writing for him isn't bad, it's just that he's a d*ck

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm shocked that you deem Bob Morley as a bad actor whereas I think of him as one of the biggest breakout actors of 2014. You may laugh at me, but I think he has played Bellamy in an oustanding manner during season 1. This season his role was less prominent since the focus was mainly on Clarke, but I think he did an amazing job portraying how conflicted he is, specially late on season 1.

Honestly, I like that The 100 is dead serious. This is not a Buffy kind of show were campy elements would work, if The 100 tried to be funny it wouldn't truly work (case on point: episode 8, where everybody got high. The worst episode of the show IMO). I think in order to truly be taken seriously the show has to be serious, because it wants to ask questions about humanity and moral: what do we do to survive? Where is the line between good and bad? What is self defense and what is cruelty? Those are very strong themes and they can only work on a show that takes itself serious.

For campy fun stuff I watch OUAT and The Flash, but when I want a rivitting drama about the human condition, I think The 100 excells. I'm constantly surprised by the strenght of the script and the acting (I think the worst actor of The 100 still does a decent job) and it keeps itself surprising.

I honestly can't look the show through your lens: I just can't picture Bob Morley or Devon Bostick as bad actors, I just can't... Devon is at worst passable for me.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree here.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Pretty divided opinion about it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree. If something is too positive, I tend to be extra skeptical. The 100, like all shows, is not for everyone. How far did you get? For me the show didn't really kick into gear until episode 5 and I still think that is the best episode of the show. There are a few episodes that aren't all that great. Killer gorilla episode? That one was a hard to take. There is also some shipping issues but even as a staunch anti-shipper, they handle it pretty well. Some characters are poorly developed at first too but again they tend to either die or improve quickly. For me, I would say that the biggest flaw of The 100 is that it gets pretty bleak pretty fast and there are times (like the season 2 finale) when it feels like the characters choose a particular course simply for the shock value. Very little of what happens feels gratuitous to me, but when it does, it sticks out big time and ends up sticking in my throat. I'm no fan of the finale. I felt like it was out-of-character simply to cause the main character the most despair possible, but for me, it was a stellar season all around.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Devon Bostick I kinda can understand, but Bob Morley? I'm shocked

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm with you on Breaking Bad. I liked it, at most points but I didn't love it. If I missed an episode it didn't bother me.
I love the characters on The Walking Dead more than I like the show itself at times. It has episodes that I just have to roll my eyes to get through and then it'll throw out a perfect episode that reminds of why I liked it to begin with.

There are a lot of popular shows people love to talk about here, that I just don't like. That's what makes it fun to come here though. We all have different tastes.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I categorized my love.LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh Hayley, written soley because some CW execs liked Phoebe...

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hayley is beyond annoying for me.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Kevin pulled for her.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I nominated Chicago PD! It's one of my favorite shows on tv right now!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I liked him just fine on TVD but TO destroyed his character completely IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I agree, Rebekah kept me watching that show when Klaus was destroyed and Hayley was just being Hayley, then she left and I did too.

    ReplyDelete
  73. season 2 episode 1, I couldn't bring myself to watch one more scene featuring Bellamy having his "I have to poop" expression...well it's actually the only one he uses. An actor needs range, he clearly hasn't got any

    ReplyDelete
  74. Has anyone else seen Les Revenants?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Claire needed more screen time.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Great idea. I submitted a nomination for Bob's Burgers. It is consistently on lists of best series to binge-watch, and is more critically loved than Family Guy and The Simpsons.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Rebekah will always be a guest star for eternity,Kol is never coming back coz Julie hates Nate,Finn was never interesting to begin with and Elijah will crawl back to that D-Bag Brother of his no matter what at the end of the day.I'm sick of it.The parents have died twice now.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I didn't really care for her, but she is a series regular in season 2.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Great news for me.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Exactly?BOB?Seriously Mac?

    ReplyDelete
  81. on Bob Morelys acting:

there's an old saying in acting: if you're cold then use it but don't freeze.
Morely does exactly that, his pitch, his expression and body language freeze up in a manner that is barely acceptable to me, there needs to be emoitonal variety in your acting, he doesen't even switch between two simply emotional stages, he switches 180° instead of slowly building up this emotion. He is, in my opinion, horrible. I could writte a 300 word essay on what he's doing wrong but I knew beforehand how the general opinion on him is here so I don't expect to change anyones opinion.

    let's agree to disagree here

    ReplyDelete
  82. There is zero humor on a regular basis in The 100. You are completely right about that. I tend to like quirky characters, but I can't stand Jasper. I also think that season 1 did a poor job sometimes of character continuity with Jasper being the prime example. It felt like he got more screentime simply because he was a beloved character and not because it made sense for the plot. Who would give someone that freaked out a gun and then have the whole outcome of a senstive plan hinge around him? It made no logical sense.

I disagree about Morely though and I say this as a The 100 fan who thinks his character is too overpraised by the fandom. Still I have zero complaints about his acting and it sure isn't because of his looks. I am way too old for someone that young to interest me in that way. (By the way, I disagree about Jennifer Lawrence as well, but I think we already had that conversation.)

    ReplyDelete
  83. she already was in season 1, that didn't stop her to only sign on for 5 episodes -,-
I like Rosario but she didn't seem too hot on staying on the show

    ReplyDelete
  84. Have you seem her interviews? She's more excited than the rest of the cast combined.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Lol I didn't watch any of season 2 but there was so much talk of body swapping I got so confused just reading about it.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Absolutely but it's Karen and Vanessa who have been given zero background. We saw Karen evolve from something we have no connection to as we are only given hints to her past.

Vanessa is a blank page to me, I don't know where her undying devotion to Fisk comes from, what her psychic state is.

    ReplyDelete
  87. This time i agree fully.

    ReplyDelete
  88. well, why did she sign on for only 5 episodes then and left her involvement for future seasons up in the air?

We barely know what actors actually thing, they could say one thing and mean the opposite. The better the actor, the more convincing the lie

    ReplyDelete
  89. I really do like Bellamy, or the idea of where they're taking Bellamy, but this is so right. The actor has a lot of growing/maturing to do. He has his moments though. I was really impressed with him in the final episodes.
My biggest issue with the show is Dahne's. I don't like the shock value scenes that have not one thing to do with the story they're telling. My other issue is the cast. They are very good at character development but they spend do much time on certain characters, others get left to twiddle their thumbs.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Her contract allows her to appear in all of the franchises-Daredevil,Jessica,Iron Fist,Luke Cage & The Defenders. So,episode no.each series were reduced.

    ReplyDelete
  91. The parents died twice? Ha! The magic of supernatural shows.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Don't even get me started on that Body swapping SL.it was painful,my friend!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Havent seen Leftovers or Bloodline and I have a high level of interest to check out both. It is cool to draw more attention to Bloodline but it might be getting more viewers than the other three shows on your list, we have no way of knowing since Netflix does not release that info.

    ReplyDelete
  94. The first paragraph I agree on entirely, fanservice is a real thing that is good to some degree but at times the plot demands consitency with previously established character details and this show is keeping it rather off balanced.

About Morely and Lawrence. I'm picky. I'm VERY picky when it comes to actors. Part of the reason I'm taking acting and screen writing is because I feel the need to understand a performance, to see how the mechanics work.
And Morely just ticks me the wrong way. Lawrence has a certain lack of understanding for most of her characters and tends to go full Shatner on us. Morely probably gets his character, I have no complaints about that at least but I find issues in his portrayal of various basic characteristics.

I admit I'm totally snobbed out in that aspect, I just can't help myself

    ReplyDelete
  95. I believe Bloodline is getting more viewers than the other 3, but you just don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  96. That does make sense but I'll believe it when I see her show up in the opening titles of JJ and Luke Cage. Jessica Jones is coming out in 2015 right?

    ReplyDelete
  97. once on TVD and then on TO, consider both to be essentially different shows

    ReplyDelete
  98. I think the fandom experience can make or break some shows. There are some shows I am still with simply because of the fandom (looking at you Grimm). I could not get into The Walking Dead either. I forced myself to finish all of season one but at the end of it, all I could think was "Boy was that boring." Too much walk in The Walking Dead for me. It swung between dull and gross with nothing in between for me. I haven't started Breaking Bad for the very same reason. Much of what people consider "The Best TV" to me ends up being sleep inducing.

    ReplyDelete
  99. That's exactly why I like having this in summer now too. For every 10 shows that people tell me I absolutely have to try, I find 1 that I really like. It restores my faith in TV to find that one and know that I could have missed a gem if it weren't for the SpoilerTV community.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I remember being a....less kind kid when she first showed up on TVD. Back then I was the only guy watching TVD and I made all my girlfrieds swear to never talk about our late night TVD watching sessions, the first words I uttered about Phoebes portrayal were "Who did she bang to get this job". I'm still waiting for the answer

    ReplyDelete
  101. good, I'm anxiously awaiting my next fix.

Let's hope JJ switches its tone like other Marvel properties tend to do

    ReplyDelete
  102. Ah, that makes sense then. I laugh because I can't count the number of times the Winchesters and company have died on Supernatural and yet are still alive and kicking for the next season. For a show where the main character once emphatically declared, "What's dead should stay dead," the show clearly didn't take its own advice.

    ReplyDelete
  103. TWD has me in its first season but I grew tired of it myself during season 2. It just turned into something absolutely boring that felt absolutely redundant.

Plus: I like GoT, however it's VASTLY overrated

    ReplyDelete
  104. Thank god, I'm not the only one :P

Many shows like to pull in a shock for the final scene to keep people watching I guess, it's the wrong approach to TV though, weekly entertainment should leave the viewer dissapointed

    ReplyDelete
  105. My poor shafted Kane. One of the best characters on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  106. You should've seen her acting in Stalker in one episode as a guest star.I almost fainted. That's how bad she was.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Fingers crossed.

    ReplyDelete
  108. SPN is one of these shows I don't know why I'm still watching. It's not....good anymore. It's not bad either. But I still can't stop watching, I don't even think about stopping. It's almost like water at this point....essential for my survival :P

The only point I was genuinely pissed at a death that apparently was going to stick was Cas in season 7.

    ReplyDelete
  109. So they're still under-utilizing Henry Ian Cusik?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Agreed. I knew that Forever would have a lot of recommendations, in part because a portion of the fandom still believes that it could be picked up somewhere else. They are a fandom on a mission. I personally loved Forever so I have enjoyed reading people's recommendations of it. I wholeheartedly agree on what they are saying about the Henry and Abe relationship. I too recommend the show.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Yes. Kane and even though Octavia had a wonderful arc last season, there wasn't enough of her, or Raven IMO. Way too much Jasper for me.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Yes and they are and Paige Turco too. She actually had a few scenes I wouldn't have been afraid to submit for an Emmy but in those same episodes were shipping woes so that's all most people talked about. She and Kane both are completely underrated and underused.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I agree on Bobs Burgers, it's not animation gold like Drawn Together and Brickleberry (at this point I need to say this: f**k you Comedy Central for cancelling both) but it's a comedy you can safely watch with your younger brother and giggle while watching.

Oh that episode with the nudist beach ^^

    ReplyDelete
  114. Neither but I've heard good things about both, I just don't have the time -,-

    ReplyDelete
  115. I haven't watched Bloodline yet (I don't even know what it's about) but the other three shows are so damn good, especially The Americans.

    ReplyDelete
  116. you're in good company. All three shows are okay but nothing as amazing as people claim them to be

    ReplyDelete
  117. Netiher will I so that's one of the reasons why I love this approach. Instead of having a few (in my opinion, snobby) critics tell people what they should watch, here we have the whole community with all its various opinions pitch in. It offers up a much more varied list and there tends to be something for everyone. I find at least 1-2 shows each year I want to try out. No one's convincing me to try Arrow again either, but I bet someone here reads a nomination of it and decides it's right up their alley.

    ReplyDelete
  118. That's why I love it here. I found Banshee/Strike Back and a few others here that I likely would never have thought to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I'll definitely be nominating Penny Dreadful, The 100 and Sense8. I might throw in 12 Monkeys and The Last Ship too if I have the patience for it. I'll just write some short things in the comments about them.

Penny Dreadful: This is a slow show, a very slow show, so if you're not a fan of that it isn't for you. I don't mind slow shows though and for me everything else about the show totally makes up for it. The acting is fantastic, the story telling is brilliant, the cinematography is superb and I love the music as well. It's very dark and can be graphic at times but I love that, the darker the better for me. It's also very character driven which is another thing I look for in shows.

Sense8: I know this just came out but I adored it. Before going into it you need to treat it like a 12 hour movie rather than a series. The first few episodes are the introduction, then there are a couple of build-up episodes and then the rest focuses on the main story and are much more action-based. Everything good I could say about this is exactly the same stuff I said about Penny Dreadful, great acting, great stories and it's all seamlessly put together. It was filmed in several different locations as well so it looks fantastic. It does have a large cast but I don't mind that and imo it's necessary for the story it's telling. Like Penny Dreadful, it's also very character driven, even more than Penny Dreadful in fact, but it does have far more action than PD, and it's action sequences are fantastic as well. Very Matrix-y but with a Sense8 twist!

The 100: One thing you need to be aware of before starting this, beware of the fandom! It has it's crazy, rude, shipper side but also has this other side that discusses and analyses the show in detail, I was actually kind of surprised to see such passionate discussions. About the show itself, it's another dark one, nowhere near as dark as PD but still dark. I love all the acting and the show itself looks great, it's one of the things that constantly surprised me about the show. Most people will say you need to give it a few episodes but I was hooked right from the beginning and in my opinion the quality has stayed very high throughout the show.

12 Monkeys: This was one of the surprises for me, I really wasn't expecting much from it at all but it turned out to be excellent. The cast was perfect and it's all woven together brilliantly (it's time travel so this is key!). I found the rules of time travel the show set up to be believable as well (as far as time travel can be of course!). It had some great twists and very intriguing mysteries. I loved all the characters as well.

The Last Ship: The lightest show of the bunch, it's easy to follow and doesn't require too much engaging of the brain! It's full of cliches and explosions (what do you expect from Michael Bay). The cast is what really makes this one shine, they all have great chemistry right from the start and their acting is brilliant. I found the story very entertaining as well, this is the most action packed of the bunch, it's just constantly more action and more drama from start to finish.

So this wasn't as short as I had intended, oops :P

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'm kind of hoping for Hannibal to end in season 4 with the incarceration of Dr. Lecter to create some connection to the movies. I would hate for the show to be apprubtly cancelled and end on an open end.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Thanks for nominating. We don't usually get a big animation component in these so I'm glad you did. It's good to have a great variety.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I think GoT is way overrated. Outlander. I could go on.
@dahne I see another TV topic :) I don't think there is a way to do it without a few people becoming offended and defensive though. We're very protective of our shows.

    ReplyDelete
  123. You dont have to write a 360 page script to write a pilot for a TV show. Mac is also not correct with his post below...every screenwriting book will tell you generally speaking, 1 page= 1 minute of screentime. Maybe Mac is talking about trying to storyboard more episodes beyond the first episode or something with his

    ReplyDelete
  124. As long as it leaves time for Paige to show up on POI I could care less (sorry 100 but POI comes first)

    ReplyDelete
  125. since stv refuses to cover animated shows the fan flocks won't run in this sites doors

    ReplyDelete
  126. The 100, Agent Carter, Daredevil and Galavant I already watch, I love the first three! Orphan Black, GOT, OITNB and the comedies are all shows I've tried but didn't like. The rest I can tell just from the trailers that they're not for me.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I have like a million friends trying to convice me to watch The Walking Dead but I honestly don't see the appeal.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Outlander is essentially one of these cheap $1 novels you get at airports

GoT...well....I only watch for the production values, the writing is absolutely sh*tty. The pace reminds me of super-slow motion

    ReplyDelete
  129. I've tried Black Mirror but I didn't like a thing about it. I think that's a minority opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Long is good as always! It provides more to discuss. I knew you were going to nominate Penny Dreadful. I didn't know you were watching Sense8 though. I am nervous to review it (should have done it today but I put it off to get this organized) because I'm not sure how much nudity, sex, violence, and language it has. What's your take on it? You know I'm not into gratuitous so if it's too much I will skip it. I like the concept but Netflix is iffy for me.

The 100 - Ha! I think most shows' fandoms should come with warning labels these days. I do love how in-depth The 100 discussions can go. I never get to participate because I refuse to read other people's comments until I write my own review and by that time conversation has usually worn down. However, I do like going back and reading some people's comments. Sometimes I even see the show in a whole new light.

The Last Ship was my favorite new show last year. For me it was the constant drama and action. Even the episode where they were dropping because of thirst was surprisingly intense. I highly recommend The Last Ship as a great summer show too. I just started the rewatch and am ranking the episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I'm sure many animated fans watch other things that SpoilerTV does cover. There's a good chance that others will follow suit here.

    ReplyDelete
  132. lol

when I call Bob Morely a bad actor I say that with the belief that he can get better. With Phoebe I have no such thought. She is truly terrible, I don't even think she cares much about that.
And I say that with the upmost respect for her, she's doing what she's getting paid to do. No need to be good if she keeps getting booked.

I won't watch her episode, not even if Jigsaw forces me to. In fact...I'd prefer suffering through all traps from Saw 1-7 instead of watching that episode.

The reason she's tolerable on TO is because Gillies carries her, why do you think she's paired up with his character? Because their relationship makes sense? Nope, because he's the only guy that somewhat knows how to stem another actors work

    ReplyDelete
  133. Keep your expectations at a minimum, It's good but it does have it's moments that are either OTT or dull. It's not all the sunshine and rainbows fans are making it out to be but it's good and it's worth watching. I've watched several of the episodes twice.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I agree that sometimes you like/love the characters more than the show, Supernatural is a great example for me. I still watch it because the characters are still compelling in some way, and the actors charisma play a big part in that, but the stories are dull most of the time, I think I find 5 or 6 episodes to be good out of 23. Still, I'll watch it till the end, can't help myself.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I kept submitting Brickleberry news but it never got through :(

    http://37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_max5pcqHAI1qz8x31o1_500.gif

    ReplyDelete
  136. I know for most of the people who have seen love it.

    ReplyDelete
  137. It's right below Vikings in my to-watch list if the new summer shows suck, I will finally get to it. I've seen the first 3-4 episodes. I just didn't have time after that.

    ReplyDelete
  138. It's safe for now.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Did you nominate Brickleberry? I've never even heard of it. Of course, I don't generally watch animation so that might be why.

    ReplyDelete
  140. The problem with some of the fandom/shipper stuff, they talk about "their version" of the show instead of the actual show. For example, Chasing Life becomes endless debates about which guy April should be with. The love triangle is part of the show and even a big part of it, but it ends up being 90% of the conversation and takes away from all of the other interesting aspects of the show. I thought Chasing Life was about a 24 year old women living and dealing with cancer but the shippers make it sound like its a show about which guy the main character is going to end up with.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Banshee was a BIG surprise for me. When I read the initial synopsis, plus the name of the show, I thought it was stupid, don't know why, just did. But I read so many good things here on STV, that I gave it a shot and now it's one of my favorites. One more to pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  142. That is the core problem I have with shipping. It takes over everything and all the conversation I am interested in gets drowned out. It's a shame because many shows, even ones with the dreaded love triangle and shipping wars, have a lot of great discussion possibilities.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I'm talking about a movie script here. At least that's how I pen my scripts to later use them as a cross reference for planning shooting.

It kinda helps me to organize my scenes based on locations and sequences already in the writing phase. Since I usually get stuck with location booking that's a blessing

It works for me, won't change my wheel ;) (that said the only 40 minute long pilot I've ever written and shot was only 58 pages long and didn't make it through at crackle.com)

    ReplyDelete
  144. Linda really makes the show for me. You should check out the pilot presentation if you haven't already; same script, but budget was so small that the animation was atrocious.

One of my favorites was the Science Fair episode. That cliffhanger...

    ReplyDelete
  145. is it? I'm not following ratings during summer.

Good to hear, everything that does Dr. Lecter justice is on my good side. I recently rewatched 'Hannibal Rising'....now that movie was bad

    ReplyDelete
  146. I come here for the ratings and shows like this. Come to think of it, I don't think any of the shows I watch are covered. But I understand, since most people are more into dramas than I am.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I heard that the Joe character got seriously overhauled for season 2 because many people had the same complaint. It sounds like the changes they made have had a positive reception. I'm very interested in the time period so that's what first caught my attention. I watched I think the first 3 episodes but the summer lineup last year kicked my butt and I had to drop a lot. I'm hoping this summer to not be so overwhelemed and to be able to get a nice chunk off my to-watch list, like this show.

    ReplyDelete
  148. where can I find last year pitch your show?

    ReplyDelete
  149. I've seen it and in fact I liked the animation there, after doing my own animated series I know how hard it is to do a show on your own :/

compare the animation styles, the Bobs Burgers one is clearly better animated (plus probably had less budget and yet is impressive for the hand drawn animation)

    ReplyDelete
  151. Thanks for the reality check. You know my issues with comic book shows so I already figured that I wouldn't like it as much as everyone else but I am looking forward to watching it, unlike SHIELD which feels more like a chore I need to get to.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Can't, it's been cancelled for a while now ^^
Also it's really a show that falls into a certain niche of comedy (more the Daniel Tosh and Anthony Jeselnik line of comedy)

    ReplyDelete
  153. Yeah but IMO animated shows deserve a part here as well. I mean, BoJack Horseman is great and quality wise on par with House of Cards IMO

    ReplyDelete
  154. As far as I'm concerned, Octavia could lead the spin-off and I would be ecstatic. She will never get the screentime I believe she deserves. I love how well-rounded her character is and she steals every scene she in for me. I wholeheartedly concur about Jasper, who is an entire basket of socks on his own.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I'm so addicted to it. I just love it. Then Amazon Prime added it and I re-watched all of S1 last week.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I've given up hope for AoS, ever since it has become more enjoyable to watch :P

    ReplyDelete
  157. Very sadly they are. The one good point is they haven't killed him off yet and considering that I like him and they kill all my favorite characters, that in itself is worth celebrating. Kane has become the voice of reason for all characters but since most of the characters are not interested in reason, he gets shafted.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Agreed. She was marvelous in most of her scenes but there was always something else that took the point for discussion. She's woefully underrated here.

    ReplyDelete
  159. If they had made Zoe a main character and ditched Root somewhere off screen, I would still be wathcing Person of Interest. As it is, it goes farther down my to-watch list every season.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Turco and Cusik are too big to be killed off

    ReplyDelete
  161. It got a 0.7 with the Season 3 Premiere and that matches their series low. However, the show is in summer which means low expectations, is really cheap to produce because of an international co-production, and it has critical acclaim. NBC already knew ratings were going to be low so it makes absolute no sense to pull it off the air. Even if cancelled after the season, Hannibal would be instantly renewed by Amazon.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Nope. I thoroughly expect them both to be killed off sooner rather than later. They have no real role in the overlying drama right now and could easily be the next big death.

    ReplyDelete
  163. I like Root...
well, I like every POI character except Shaw though

    ReplyDelete
  164. We really do need Raven from the Ark back. I do love Wick. I love snarky, fun characters but I don't need the love story to come with him. If they could make it not a priority between the two, just a backstory, I'd be ok. I just need Raven back and Octavia to just be her awesome self. Another unpopular opinion, but these two are so far above Clarke for me, it's not funny.
I really wish Jasper had died in the pilot like he was supposed to. Miller is more interesting. I actually hated him in S1 for smart mouthing Octavia but loved him in S2. Especially when he and his dad hugged.

    ReplyDelete
  165. so it's not safe, it's standing on one leg :/

    ReplyDelete
  166. The only show I felt good about writing was Chasing Life. And while it got its 2nd season it still needs some help.. plus its a good watch. Hope I was convincing. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  167. I'll be preaching Penny Dreadful till the end of time!

Sense8 certainly has it's fair share of nudity, a little light on the language side and as for violence I'm not sure how to describe it, it has 1 or 2 scenes that might give it a warning before the episode if it were on broadcast TV but it isn't that heavy on violence either. Nudity is pretty much the only thing it's heavy on but a lot of it is woven into the story, either as an individual character's story or to show us the new connection they have with each other and it's effects and it's strength. Either way though imo I think the stories being told would make enduring anything you dislike worth it.

I usually go back and read some discussions about The 100 for the same reason, it sometime's gives me a whole new perspective. I'm almost ashamed to say I got behind on The 100 in the second half of S2 and missed all the discussions.

I'm looking forward to The Last Ship returning soon, hopefully it keeps it's momentum from last season.

  170. I never thought I would stop watching Supernatual on a weekly basis but Jeremy Carver killed it for me in season 8. If I weren't reviewing and podcasting on it, I would have stopped midway through. I watched season 9 over the summer in a one week marathon and thought it was mostly meh. Dean the Demon caught my attention though so I watched the season 10 premiere that week and enjoyed it for the first time since season 7. I think this season was a whole lot better than anything season 8-9 and I got back into watching weekly. It will never be what it was in the first 3 seasons but at least it doesn't actively make me angry to watch it anymore. As for Cas, we'll have to agree to disagree because I think all the angel junk should have ended in Swan Song when he was popped like a balloon.

  172. Well, I do love action shows, so I'll trust you and will check it out. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  173. I get that but I'm at a point I absolutely loathe Sam, so I need a second-main that I care for, that spot is now filled by cas to me

    ReplyDelete
  174. Yeah, I hesitate to pick a topic that is inherently negative for the Topic of the Day. I'm already pushing it by having one day dedicated to the sophomore slump. It's kind of like how I always refused to do a "Who's your favorite Winchester?" poll when I was running SPN polls each week in the summer. No good could come of it. For the record, my answer would be Baby. In 10 seasons, she never ticked me off. Can't say that about any of the other characters, even extended family like Bobby.

    ReplyDelete
  175. boyd and raylan had an interesting relationship.but i was a wee bit disappointed with the series finale.

    ReplyDelete
  176. now lets hope new showrunners don't screw it up.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Funny you should bring it up: I just binge-watched BoJack Horseman on Thursday. Good show, isn't it? Gotta admit, my favorite part is when they show scenes from "Horsin' Around". Have you seen the Christmas special?

I'm sure you noticed that Kristen Schaal voices Sarah Lynn on the show, as well as Louise on Bob's Burgers and Carol on The Last Man On Earth.

    ReplyDelete
  178. I actually didn't notice, speaks for her range as an actress and voice actress :D

    ReplyDelete
  179. Sometimes I wish I had watched Breaking Bad with the rest, maybe I would think differently about it than I do now.

    ReplyDelete
  180. the originals is getting there too, but for different reasons. I still like it and all, bit I know TO is a bad show.

    ReplyDelete
  181. I think Sam was the most improved character this season. At least Carver stopped throwing him under the bus. In fact that is one of the reasons why I really liked this season comparatively.

    ReplyDelete
  182. I felt the opposite since s7. Sam always was pushed up to be "the chosen one"...

    ReplyDelete
  183. I'd like to see the romance between Wick and Raven be in the background too. What I'd really like to see is Raven and Abby working together again. I think they made a great team and that's the Raven I love. Octavia is my favorite character so I agree that they need to keep letting her be a kick butt warrior. She fascinates me. You're not alone in your thinking about Clarke. I agree. We're way in the minority but I think that Clarke is the Bellamy of this season in that while she's a good character, she's a bit overrated in the fandom. There are several characters I would place above her, including Lexa.

I didn't remember that Jasper was supposed to die in the pilot. Argh! It's like Sera Gamble saving Cas again. He and Murphy are the only two characters who grate on my nerves every time, and at least Murphy was supposed to grate for awhile there. I hate this sudden redemption without earning it thing they have going on with him. Oh and Jaha is on my very last nerve.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Ha! Maybe that's what I should do then. I loathe Skye so she's my biggest obstacle to actually enjoying the show. I do adore those 3 minutes without her in every episode though.

    ReplyDelete
  185. I felt that more in the first 5 seasons than now. One thing I really liked was how Dean got the mytharc this season, allowing Sam to be the most supportive one. It was a nice flip.

    ReplyDelete
  186. You can absolutely nominate cancelled shows. In fact, I encourage it. I plan on nominating a few shows that have been cancelled for awhile. We're in summer rules now so any show (not reality TV) is fair game for nominations. The ones at midseason are only for shows currently airing.

    ReplyDelete
  187. I'll go into Sense8 cautiously optimistic then. Thanks.

  191. never read the books either, I liked how different from the norm it is whenit comes to magic. But it's probably a niche type show though.

  193. Glad to know I won't be lost then. It's one of the shows whose premise caught my attention the most this summer season.

  194. yeh, the continuity errors alone in supernatural were driving me nuts. But I stuck it out when Dean turned demon, even if it was predictable, but then I ditched for good after it was cured so soon.

  196. I was sad that Demon Dean was cured so quickly. He was a lot of fun and it was great seeing a Winchester have a good time for once, even if it was with the King of Hell.

  197. Oh yes. I remember JR and the other writers just enthusing over the actor. They said they couldn't let him die. Whatever. That spear was supposed to kill him. I think it changed after the pilot was filmed and screened. Then when they got the order to series, they added him.

  198. Darn. I love The 100 but it does have a way of spotlighting the characters I don't care for and killing off the ones I do. I wish they would reverse it. Actually I hope now that Bellamy and Clarke have both had their real growth seasons they will make this one Octavia's.
