SHOWTIME® PICKS UP SEASON THREE OF THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED HIT DRAMA PENNY DREADFUL

Season Three to Begin Production in Dublin, Ireland This Fall

NEW YORK, NY – June 16, 2015 – SHOWTIME has renewed the critically-acclaimed, BAFTA Award-winning drama series PENNY DREADFUL for a third season, it was announced today by David Nevins, President, Showtime Networks Inc. A co-production with Sky Atlantic, PENNY DREADFUL will once again shoot on location in Dublin, Ireland for a nine episode order to debut in 2016. The second season of PENNY DREADFUL, currently airing on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME, will air its season finale on Sunday, July 5.

“John Logan’s brilliant writing and this amazingly talented ensemble continue to draw a passionate, global fan base into the meticulously crafted world of PENNY DREADFUL,” said Nevins. “Together with our wonderful partners at Sky Atlantic, we’re excited to see what new haunts John and his team have in store for season three.”

“PENNY DREADFUL is the perfect fit for Sky Atlantic; truly international in scale and ambition but with a raft of British talent at its core, and filmed in the Republic of Ireland.” said Zai Bennett, Director of Sky Atlantic. “I’m thrilled to have the series returning to the channel, and to once again be partnering with John Logan and continuing to work with our good friends at SHOWTIME.”

PENNY DREADFUL’s second season has found Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) forming a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and the Creature (Rory Kinnear) are all waging battles of their own. Two-time Tony® Award winner Patti LuPone appeared as a special guest star, a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past. 2. YAY!!! I was getting a bit worried with the ratings it was getting the past couple weeks so this is definitely a huge relief. This season has been incredible and even better than the already awesome S1. I really hope they get some recognition this year, especially the sublime Eva Green.

  3. If it makes you feel better there was never any doubt about it getting renewed. Based off last season it does very well in L+7 which is what Showtime look at and it's a co-production with Sky.

  4. Ahhh yes it does make me feel a lot better knowing that it was always going to get renewed for S3 since Showtime doesn't just look at Live+SD ratings. Thanks SGU!

  5. S1 was 8 episodes, S2 is 10 episodes and S3 will be 9 episodes? Showtime episode orders are weird.

  6. Cool. Not my favorite show, but I enjoy it.

  7. 9 episodes? I wonder if they already have the story planned well in advance and are able to tell Showtime the ideal number of episodes, cos 8,10,9 is a strange pattern.

  8. Yay! Very happy for this news. :)

  9. Yes! Penny Dreadful is amazing!

  10. YIPPEEEE!!!!

But the strange order of 9 episodes bugs me. First season was understandably 8 episodes with the count being increased to 10 in S2. I expected the same to continue.

Now I just need Salem renewal so my perfect duo can last.

  12. Anything goes in the UK when it comes to the number of episodes per season of a TV show, and Penny Dreadful is a UK co-production. Same with Episodes that Showtime also renewed for 9 episodes. Than there is the John Logan factor and the fact he writes all of the episodes.

  13. Congrats to Penny Dreadful! I love this season so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. One guy, John Logan, writes the entire series, and the guy also wrote the new James Bond film. Maybe he only wants to do 9 episodes for season 3. I kind of dig the writer potentially having creative freedom to do as many episodes as they want per season instead of having to do 10 episodes.

  15. I prefer that system rather than having the writers have to stretch or shorten their stories to fit the episode count.

    YEEEES!!!

  17. I do know that sometimes in the UK, it is also a financial consideration and the writer might have wanted to do 10 episodes for example and is forced to do 8 episodes because that is the budget for the series. The writer of Broadchurch supposedly wanted 10 episodes for season 1.

  18. Oh my god, YES! I don't need to worry as much now! One of my favourite shows is SAFE!

  19. YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!! I am so happy! Now The Whispers needs to get renewed

  20. Hit drama? This proves that any ratings can qualify as a "hit" drama.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hell Yes!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Showtime really doesn't have any shows that rate besides Ray Donovan and Homeland. So after those two, it's pretty much up to what Showtime likes.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Totally awesome, albeit with the ratings and critical acclaim unsurprising. Especially with under-vast performance of Ray Donovan, and other shows, given additional seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree, anyone trying to claim that Penny Dreadful's renewal was in jeopardy is either a bitter fan of a fellow roster show that was cancelled or unaware of it being a co-production. Or both.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ah!! I know that he writes all the episodes but I didn't know about his involvement in the new James Bond film. I was just afraid that Showtime was cutting down because of low ratings but maybe this is just like what happened to episode count of upcoming S4 of Banshee (reduced to 8 from usual 10) - busy show runners who feel that the story they want to tell is best told in less than 10 episodes..

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yay! So glad! This show is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  27. normally id say I want more eps, but then we might get filler crap that 15-22 ep shows run into often.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think I should now give this show a shot...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I know that some people on this site fixate over ratings, but there are other parameters defining being hit.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Especially for channels like Showtime or HBO. Showtime claims at least 70% of the audience for their shows are delayed viewers that timeshift. The overnight ratings literally only tell 30% or less of story when it comes to viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am thrilled but shocked that the writer/creator John Logan has time to do it , given his busy upcoming slate. It must have love child status for him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's how I feel inside!!! Hopefully next Season will be the Wolf arc.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yay! So happy about this,

    ReplyDelete
  34. This season has a 100% rating so far on Rotten Tomatoes. So, yes. It's a critical hit with middling numbers. Not everything; especially a genre show, need to have the best ratings to be called a hit.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yaaaaayyyy! This season is great and I'm sure the third one will be awesome too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

    ReplyDelete
  37. One of my favorite shows. Great news!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hopefully Lily will make it to season three.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Fuck yeah. It's damn near impossible to hold a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You nailed it. He spent ten years developing the show. It's his baby.

Great news. It actually never even crossed my mind it could be canceled.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Must be nice for him to see his baby turn out so beautiful .

    ReplyDelete
  43. actually Penny is a ratings success for them also . Variety wrote this with its renewal : "'Dreadful' has been a multiplatform success story for Showtime, with a
good portion of its audience coming through VOD and streaming
    platforms."
