SHOWTIME® PICKS UP SEASON THREE OF THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED HIT DRAMA PENNY DREADFUL
Season Three to Begin Production in Dublin, Ireland This Fall
NEW YORK, NY – June 16, 2015 – SHOWTIME has renewed the critically-acclaimed, BAFTA Award-winning drama series PENNY DREADFUL for a third season, it was announced today by David Nevins, President, Showtime Networks Inc. Created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar® nominee John Logan, PENNY DREADFUL stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green. A co-production with Sky Atlantic, PENNY DREADFUL will once again shoot on location in Dublin, Ireland for a nine episode order to debut in 2016. The second season of PENNY DREADFUL, currently airing on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME, will air its season finale on Sunday, July 5.

PENNY DREADFUL’s second season has found Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) forming a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and the Creature (Rory Kinnear) are all waging battles of their own. Two-time Tony® Award winner Patti LuPone appeared as a special guest star, a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past. Helen McCrory returned as Evelyn Poole, the seductive spiritualist who poses a unique threat to our protagonists, along with Simon Russell Beale, who is back as eccentric Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle. Additional guest stars include Douglas Hodge as a Scotland Yard investigator and Sarah Greene as Poole’s powerful daughter, Hecate. ReplyDeleteYAY!!! I was getting a bit worried with the ratings it was getting the past couple weeks so this is definitely a huge relief. This season has been incredible and even better than the already awesome S1. I really hope they get some recognition this year, especially the sublime Eva Green.
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel better there was never any doubt about it getting renewed. Based off last season it does very well in L+7 which is what Showtime look at and it's a co-production with Sky.

ReplyDeleteBut the strange order of 9 episodes bugs me. First season was understandably 8 episodes with the count being increased to 10 in S2. I expected the same to continue.

Anything goes in the UK when it comes to the number of episodes per season of a TV show, and Penny Dreadful is a UK co-production. Same with Episodes that Showtime also renewed for 9 episodes. Than there is the John Logan factor and the fact he writes all of the episodes.

ReplyDeleteOne guy, John Logan, writes the entire series, and the guy also wrote the new James Bond film. Maybe he only wants to do 9 episodes for season 3. I kind of dig the writer potentially having creative freedom to do as many episodes as they want per season instead of having to do 10 episodes.

ReplyDeleteI do know that sometimes in the UK, it is also a financial consideration and the writer might have wanted to do 10 episodes for example and is forced to do 8 episodes because that is the budget for the series. The writer of Broadchurch supposedly wanted 10 episodes for season 1.

ReplyDeleteAh!! I know that he writes all the episodes but I didn't know about his involvement in the new James Bond film. I was just afraid that Showtime was cutting down because of low ratings but maybe this is just like what happened to episode count of upcoming S4 of Banshee (reduced to 8 from usual 10) - busy show runners who feel that the story they want to tell is best told in less than 10 episodes..

ReplyDeleteI know that some people on this site fixate over ratings, but there are other parameters defining being hit.
ReplyDeleteEspecially for channels like Showtime or HBO. Showtime claims at least 70% of the audience for their shows are delayed viewers that timeshift. The overnight ratings literally only tell 30% or less of story when it comes to viewers.

ReplyDeleteThis season has a 100% rating so far on Rotten Tomatoes. So, yes. It's a critical hit with middling numbers. Not everything; especially a genre show, need to have the best ratings to be called a hit.
