Dorian Grey throws a ball and everyone is invited. I could leave the preview with that sentence and its implication alone would give you the idea as to the goings-on in this latest Penny Dreadful episode. For the most part “Glorious Horrors” moved a bit slowly for me with the main action building up to the scenes at the ball. But those scenes were the jewel of the episode. Having everyone in one room together… well I won’t spoil too much, but watching the body language, subtext, and interactions between certain party goers was a treat.
Sir Malcolm and his team continue to lose footing in this war against the witches. They are chipping away at our protagonists bit by bit and watching it happen will cause you to brim with anticipation. I really would like Evelyn Poole’s back story now, as well as that of the weird sisters. The desire to know the method behind the malice is driving me crazy.
Ethan Chandler gets a fair amount of play in this episode. No back story yet, but I feel we are close and seeing his role in “Glorious Horrors” deepens my interest in the sharpshooter. The idea of being different, of being a “freak” is prevalent in this episode and our various sets of players reflect or deal with the idea of being outside the norm in a more forward way than they have in the past. It’s a bit more spelled out than the subtlety we’ve seen, the implication that our band of misfits is spate from the sphere of humanity.
The scenes at the ball are some of my favorite in Penny Dreadful. Again, I have to stress the interactions between characters is what makes “Glorious Horrors” fun to watch, though the visuals help as well. Without giving anything away, the sumptuousness of the ball and the end of the episode are sure to leave impressions. And the music! Some of the best pieces we’ve heard in Penny Dreadful history are in those ball scenes.
I can’t confidently call this episode slow, but for the most part the scenes at Dorian Grey’s ball are the best and most interesting parts by a long shot. The episode sets the stage for horrors, both glorious and otherwise, to come. The plot is being set in motion now for the season two finale and it will be interesting to see how the show reaches its final conflict.

ReplyDeleteWith all my respects , one thing is explain your point of view about the episode, but another is don´t say nothing. I don´t understand nothing in this review. You are not saying nothing clear, any hint of nothing.

ReplyDeleteI am interested if Ethan is at the ball. From the promos I've seen it looks like he's at home with Sembene minding his own business... transforming, or whatever. I'm curious about his change, of course, but I would also like to see him at the ball with the whole gang. Does anybody know?
ReplyDeleteHmm...I found this episode to drag a bit. I think it is because my interest in Dorian Grey is zero and for some reason I'm not really feeling for Brona and Frankenstein - maybe they don't have good chemistry together, maybe it's just me? Brona and Ethan, for example, had great chemistry, but yeah, I'm not getting that same reaction for Brona and her resurrector.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, on another note I have a feeling this all bit with Ethan is building to next season, which will be an Ethan centric season, focusing on the world of werewolves and Apaches. We'll probably see Ethan's father himself coming down personally to bring him home, it'll be interesting to see who they cast for it if they do bring his character into the show.
I shall be waltzing to my TV Sunday night in anticipation.

ReplyDeleteI purposely don't watch the preview because I've found in the past it colors my perception of the episode before I watch it and review it. If I go in expecting certain things it changes how I enjoy and view the episode, so I stay spoiler free online and got rid of tumblr because of it. I went in blind to the ball, not knowing who would be there and who wouldn't and was pleasantly surprised and wanted to preserve that for the viewers.
ReplyDeleteI think he'll be there, there was a spoiler from TV Guide saying the show had created 3 original waltzes for S2, one for all the characters, one for the creature, and one for Ethan & Vanessa, so yes, I think he'll be there =)

ReplyDeleteI think that Dorian is gonna to recognize her. But he kept once her identity in secret in the theatre, remember? in S1. Maybe he won´t say anything and she did not remember. I am not pretty sure about it. And Ethan...oh well he´s very in love with Vanessa, in fact she´s KO by her. I don´t know if he would take vendetta against Victor, or how he will notice that Brona is alive. But she´s not his brona. She is keeping something strange. And she will have some with Dorian i´m prettty sure. A kind of rare friendship, not love or sex this time, but much more twisted...
ReplyDeleteWell actually i did not feel any chemistry between Brona and Ethan, was so bored...he was with her by sorry...whom he likes is Vanessa. Ethan couldn´t lie to anybody. He loved Brona but when she died, he almost did not remember her he just has eyes for all the Vanessa´s stuffs, safety, his if for her. Ah if the writers would give us something of Ethanessa, we would be in the heaven. Ah well the chemistry between Victor and Brona is there, is strange, is almost stained of an innocence few seen in freaks as they´re. But who is starting to tired me is Caliban, he is being very heaven with his decadent poetry stalking Brona to love him and Victor too. I think the writers should search for him a true love interested and stop that and work over it. I like Lavinia for him, i hope he´s not gonna to hurt her or something rare, because the poor Caliban brings the ruin always.

ReplyDeleteWell PD in my humble opinion is like a prism, has so faces differents,...and the writers know Rationing well the terrifying, spiritual, sexual and even domestic part in each episode. I´m waiting for Dorian´s ball, as you said when all its own interesting interactions. I know that there lives all the important part in this episode. And the Verbis Diablo is very important for me too.
I like the way that the writers are follow for show us something major. All is a major plan, since the beginning of the times...i think PD is really a battle between God vs The Devil. But the God´s plan is much more subtle than the Devil´s. He is aparently in silence, but i know don´t. He has his own weapons and is using them already. The key is in Ethanessa´s union. Well just a thought. Neither a question.
I had forgotten about the theatre! It would be interesting to see the friendship between Brona (or Lily) and Dorian. I think Brona will recover her memories eventually but he'll be so in love with Victor that she'll stay with him (at least that's what I hope).

Yeah they´re exactly my thoughts respect Ethanessa (Ethan+Vanessa) in my opinion he likes her since he met her, he was so dazzled...in the bar while she was speaking to him about his true personality...and well, actually Vanessa Ives the most beautiful woman in England haha. So the poor Ethan is passing by nn hell, i think he in any moment could feel Vanessa up....we need see that.
ReplyDeleteAnd respect Dorian and Brona, thought she loves Victor, i felt a twisted frienship or maybe said, connection. Brona and Dorian even could have a date out of their houses for speak. Maybe Dorian will represent for Brona the freedom of live so tight to Victor & Caliban, and she has curiosity about the new world who she is knowing. She is a newborn after all. Dorian could show her part of it. without any type of dark desire. Because Dorian loves Angelique. But he is harmless and he could interact good with Brona. Actually i preffer Dorian than Caliban. I hate the conversations forced of Caliban and Brona, he just is lieying her for get her love?
Come on! Will be much better her interaction with Dorian. He made to her a favour in the past and could keep his identity in silence too. Or maybe if both remember the past, could to be thinking in Ethan & Vanessa, in how recover them? This show is so twisted...look at me what pernicious ideas...lol haha.
