Orphan Black - Insolvent Phantom of Tomorrow - Review: "Kendall Malone"
14 Jun 2015
Orphan Black Reviews ROWow ! What an amazing penultimate episode Orphan Black offered us last night on BBC America, with "Insolvent Phantom of Tomorrow". It was absolutely thrilling, we finally got to meet the Castor original, who turned out to be the Leda original too and Mrs S’s mother… It took me some time to process it, I think I froze for 2 minutes after the episodes ended. Crazy shit.
"Insolvent Phantom of Tomorrow" was a spectacular episode, full of revelations and twists. We have been so lucky this season on Orphan Black, since the season premieres, we’ve been learning more about the Leda / Castor origins and now we have met their original. We also finally got to know who the Leda mole was and it was a little heartbreaking but understandable. And actually, it turned out it wasn’t that bad since Sarah got her hands on the Castor original before Castor ! And so, as Gracie turned out to be the mole, Shay was actually innocent (really ?) and Delphine might have got herself into a a big problem while Helena resolved a drug dealing problem in her typical way (amazing sestra !).
Mrs S, Sarah and Felix traveled back home last night on "Insolvent Phantom of Tomorrow"and it felt really great to watch them back there. Mrs S was so much fun and it was a real pleasure to finally learn more about her, her past and who she used to be, even before having Sarah and Felix as her own. Mrs S recontacted her former network and met with Terry. He revealed that the number Rachel translated was actually a prisoner ID, so he would be able to locate the Castor original ! It was surprised it’d go so fast but of course, something was up.
Mrs S musical sequence was one of the best on Orphan Black, I had no idea Maria Doyle Kennedy could sing like that, and combined with poor Terry getting beaten up by Ferdinand it was absolutely perfect. I was really delighted to see James Frain back as Ferdinand. Still, I thought he’d be more present in the episode; so I was a bit disappointed but I'm so looking forward his part next week in the season finale.
Terry found something about the Castor original but he only revealed it to Mrs S who totally changed her mind about everything. Suddenly, she didn’t want to get Sarah and Felix involved. She wanted to get home as soon as possible. She was clearly afraid.
Of course, Sarah wouldn’t let this go so easily and picked up Terry’s phone. It was typical of Sarah and I loved her character for that, she is always so determined. She was so close to the truth she couldn’t just let go and let S handle it. So, she followed Terry’s track and found the Castor original ! I was so scared when Sarah got into his apartment. I was afraid he could jump on her at any moment and hurt her. And it was what happened but it turned out the supposed Castor original was an old lady ? WTF ? And then Mrs S came in and called her “mother”... Wow, Orphan Black writers just blew my mind in that very moment.
Mrs S’s mother, Kendall Malone, turned out to have two cell lines, because she swallowed her twin brother in their mother’s womb. Wow wow wow Mrs S could not execute her plan and kill the Castor original, as it was also the Leda original. She is probably Cosima and the sisters only help against their sickness. Holy Shit. That was so powerful and so surprising.
Orphan Black really pulled a thrilling string with the identity of the Castor original. I’ve never thought it could be also Leda original and Mrs S mother. I still need time to adjust because it’s so big. In a weird way, Sarah (and her sisters) are related to Mrs S… I can’t wait to the aftermaths and how it will affect their relationships. The season finale sounds even more exciting now. But at least now, we can have hope for Cosima.... But, Coady might want to get Kendall Malone first, as her son Rudy was getting sicker, failing one of the brain test. With Ferdinand in London too and Rachel finishing working on the book for Castor, Mrs S and Sarah better hurry and get back to Cosima and Dyad. I have a feeling it won’t be so easy to travel with the Original.
Back at Dyad, Cosima went to seek Delphine’s help as she started to suspect Shay was actually a mole for Castor. She read her file, learnt she was military and started to connect the dots, with Scott’s help. Shay knew about the book, she knew about Sarah and she could have told Rudy Cosima was sick again. Everything pointed toward her.
But the best part of Cosima and Delphine’s scene was when finally Cosima started to trust Delphine again, telling her about Sarah’s whereabouts in London. It was time she recongized she could trust Delphine despite her position at Dyad and her relationship with Topsite. She was the only one who could help and protect her.
Delphine wasted no time and visited Shay. I freaking loved Delphine being so dark and cold with Shay. It was really good and fun. It was a whole new Delphine, so protective of her girl. She was willing to go very far to get Shay’s confession. Of course, she kept denying as she wasn’t the mole, it was Gracie who told Castor about the book. Cosima tried to prevent Delphine from doing something irrevocable to Shay, but I think it might have been a little too late. Delphine hadn’t started anything against but Shay. Sill, Delphine told her about Castor and was very threatening. Shay could start to be suspicious and asked questions about who Cosima really is.
There was something definitely off about Shay actually, IMO, even if she wasn’t the mole, she could still be Castor or something else. I could totally see her connected to the psychic/cantina waitress from Mexico.
So, Gracie finally reveled herself. She was actually quite weird around the Hendrix house, hugging Helena and leaving with a big bag for a doctor appointment. I knew something was up still I’ve never guessed she was the mole. Castor reached out to her, using her love for Mark to get info on Leda. At least, Gracie was nice enough to apologize calling Cosima.
I’m not that angry at Gracie for selling the sisters to Castor, she did it out of love for Mark, not because she hates them. She just wanted to be with the one person she loves in the world. And actually, it wasn’t that bad since Castor hadn’t found the original first. I really hope Mark and her can be happy, after he gets cured.
Finally, Helena and Donnie continued to spend more time together and to bond in "Insolvent Phantom of Tomorrow". Donnie was badly injured from his fight with Jason but he wanted to keep Allison out of the loop. But, things got worst when Pouchy sent his man to get the pills back, so Jason wasn’t vouching for the Hendrix anymore, Pouchy had no interest in working with them. Oops, that would be hard to hide from Allison even if she was busy all day making deliveries.
Helena and Donnie were so fun together. It’s such a great pairing the writers have pulled there, they’re amazing together. Helena was very nice with Donnie, healing him but when she learnt her babies were taken by Pouchy’s guy, she wasn't fooling around anymore. Helena was on her new path, less violent and more regular, to prepare herself to be a mother. But being a mother also means protect your children and it’s exactly what Helena did.
Donnie was hilarious in his scene with Pouchy and his cousin. He is always trying his best to be cool and all, and he keeps on failing miserably. Helena came to help him, first pretending to be Allison. It was hilarious to watch Helena’s face with Allison’s smile, and that hat….
I absolutely loved that scene, but the best part was when Pouchy’s cousin started to threaten Allie’s daughter, after making it clear to Donnie and Allison that they will work for Pouchy from now on. Helena totally changed, and came back to her former path : violence and murder. No one should threaten Helena and her sisters babies. I’m glad she got ride of Pouchy, I can’t wait to see the consequences with Jason and Allison but at least now they have a lot of money ! Great news.
"Insolvent Phantom of Tomorrow" was an excellent episode, exactly what I expected from Orphan Black penultimate episode. It set things in motion for the season finale, which promises us to be the best season finale of the show yet.
Sarah has the Castor original, she just needs to keep her and get her to Dyad, but Castor are after them and quite close (as Felix watched someone coming to Kendall’s house) while at Dyad, Delphine and Cosima will have to deal with Shay and Ferdinand ! I just can’t wait for next Saturday !
What did you think of "Insolvent Phantom of Tomorrow" ? How shocked were you by the ending ? What do you think will happen now the original is known ? Hit the comments !
Clones notes :
- Helena dancing and making soaps. I love that girl. That was a bloody episode !
- “Thank you for saving my babies” So cute
- No Rachel, no Krsytal ! I missed them !
- Now Ferdinand has something against Delphine, as she has something against him. That would be interesting to see what it will play out in the season finale and we might finally get to see Topsite ?! Also, do you think Ferdinand will ask to see Rachel ?
- Donnie speaking Portuguese, I just love that man.

I like that Sarah and her mum are really related. They have so much in common. Now we know that's not just because Sarah was raised by Mrs. S. but has something to do with the genes too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for getting the review up so quickly, Romain!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic penultimate episode. It was difficult to choose over Dark Delphine, but Helena definitely stole the show - 'you threaten babies?' Brilliant! Plus her clone swapping with Alison was hilarious. I chuckled when the goon looked through the peep hole and saw her smiling face. I wonder what ramifications this incident is going to have for the Hendrix clan though. I'm not so sure you can knock off a drug kingpin and get away with it.
Evelyne Brochu is definitely my second favourite actor on Orphan Black. She's seriously brilliant when playing up Delphine's dark side. I would have spilled all my secrets to her in a heartbeat if I were Shay. Great actor, great character. I can't wait to see her face off with Ferdinand next week. Ferdinand was a scary character, but my money is on Delphine to take him down.
It's such a shame it's the season finale already.
Great review for a geat episode!
ReplyDeleteThe reveal about the Original was so shocking I had to watch the last five minutes of the episode again!
So Mrs. S kind of raised (part of) her own mother (as in Sarah) without knowing it? I'm not sure I believe this would happen by coincidence.
And she shares 50% of the clones' DNA which makes her as important for their health as Kira?
As Sarah is the only one who knows that Siobhan is genetically (like) her dauther, she will hopefully stay more or less safe as I don't expect the Original to live much longer on the show...
Thanks for this review !
ReplyDeleteWhat a twist ! I really did not expect to see S's mum in London. So, if I get it right, Kendall Malone has two genomes in her cells : Leda's and Castor's ? God, that's even more complex than my biology class.
Also loved Donnie's and Helena's scenes, Helena is definitely my favorite clone.
I really enjoy the new Delphine, such a badass.
I can't believe next week will be the last episode of the season. It happened so fast, as always.
Oh and I heard something on the internet about a reboot of the show for next season due to Tatiana Maslany's busy schedule. Has anyone heard about it too ?
"A pistola está vazia" Sonice to hear a good old portuguese joke!
ReplyDeleteNice review and it seems we've got an amazing season ahead!
GREAT REVIEW. always great. LOVED so much of the episode... really every episode. But I was letdown by the major twist, & I'm upset that I don't like it & don't really even know why.. I find it very cool that there is only one Castor/Leda original, but I just don't like that it is S's mum. Granted one of my favorite things about the episode was learning more about S. But her mum.. really?! Maybe I'll feel differently once things play out in the finale with now the obvious conflict that lies there. I mean even that final scene with S struggling was so lovely, so I'm sure it's going to be great.. I guess I just kind of hate when big twists in any show often turn out to be how everyone is related maybe? Which seems weird considering the premise of this show, but I don't know. Either way I still loved the episode. Highlights: DELPHINE!!!!! obviously. Gracie's betrayal stung, but also a good little twist. Just because it turns out Sarah did get to the original first doesn't mean Gracie's choice is null and void. And it's obvious there isn't exactly a happy ending for Gracie & Mark with Coady still running things. I was also surprised Mark seemed okay with involving her in the first place. Helena & Donnie were probably my favorite again this episode. So much I can say about Helena. I mean sure she can be enjoyable because of how bat shit crazy she can become with the flip of a switch, but just like Donnie telling her she's family, the switch in Helena wasn't truly flipped until Pouchy threatened Alison's kids and I just love that. Love her! Great stuff. Everything that happened this week will have HUGE ramifications for the finale so I'm excited regardless of how undecided I am at the moment.
ReplyDelete"Topsite"
ReplyDeleteTopside.
Yes that twist will change a lot Sarah (and her other sisters) relationships with Mrs S. Can't wait to see the season finale !
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome :)
ReplyDeleteHelena was awesome, I think she can get away with everything :D
Evelyn Brochu was cearly at the top of her game on that episode, can't wait her showdown with Ferdinand. I hope she kills him :)
Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI think I rewatched it the end about 4/5 times just to be sure I fully understood what the hell happened !!I haven't thought about Mrs genome who could help Kira too, great though. I'm not sure Kendall will survive the season finale :/
You're welome :)
ReplyDeleteYeah she has two cell lines, appartently she ate her twi brother in the womb. It's rare but it happens (I think it was shown on Grey Anatomy ^^)
Helena can be a wonderful and awesome clone and yet sometimes she can make questionable choice. I can't really pick a favorite clone they're all so different and interesting
I had a little rpoblem at first with the original being S mother. But due to the importance of motherhood and the mother figure in OB mythology, I went along with it. It's great drama and ina way, it what makes Sarah special.
ReplyDeleteAs for Gracie & Mark, to me, it didn't seem like Mark was proud and happy of what he had done. Castor probably forced his hands, just like it forced Gracie.
The season finale is going to be legendary ! I said it :)
For me this still is a little bit confunsing... As far as I understand the biological relationships between the clones, the Original and Mrs. S:
ReplyDeleteThe LEDA and CASTOR clones share 100% of Kendalls DNA (XX and XY), although it was altered: the health problems do not seem to run in the "natural" family, Siobhan and her mother. And all the clones have a different eye color than Mrs. S's mum, but I am not sure about genetics when 2 genetic lines are split and separated from one individual ("darker" genes are usually dominant so maybe that's why they have hazel eyes?).
Genetically Mrs. S is like an offspring from LEDA so she shares 50% of their DNA and that would make her a half-sister to Kira?
How much DNA of the CASTOR boys is in Siobhan I can not really tell. They have 100% from Kendall (XY) but as she is a woman she would only have XX genome from her mother? I do not know enough about genetics to be sure on this...
I don't hear something about a reboot. What should that mean? Orphan Black without Tatiana Maslany or with less Tatiana Maslany is unthinkable. Orphan Black IS Tatiana Maslany.
ReplyDeleteGracie ....WAS ....the mole .....

I gotta say the EP was a little bit all over the place (literally and figuratively xD) so the narrative didn't feel as tight as 3x08 ... also it covered a LOT of "Core Mystery" elements in a VERY short amount of time so i guess thats why it felt a little bit rushed ...
The "Castor Original" reveal: ...Liked the totally-mindblowingly-out-there-but-totally-scientifically-possible outcome ...did not like the whole "It's all in the family" dynamic ...also Sarah must be the luckiest person ever ... she seems to find stuff people spend DECADES looking for ..in like 3 days xD
Delphine ...oh my new fave fictional Crazy Scientist/Boss ass bitch/Problematic Fave... Gurl ... U have NO CHILL ....All it took was Cosima trusting her (FINALLY!) and admitting she was (KINDA) right about Shay being ..well... SHAY D. (couldn't help it ..#sorrynotsorry xD) for Delphine to go all Vito Cormierone on her ...also the whole boarding school story felt extremely personal (Could it be Delphine was actually talking 'bout herself!? ... :( ) ...Luckily Cosima called her right in time ..cause Crazy-Torturer-Delphine is not on my list of thing I wanna see on OB ...also props to Shay for keeping it sassy and calling her out on her crazy razor-boot shenanigans xD
Helena was EVERYTHING xD ....every single scene was pure gold (even HELENA managed to be a better Alison than Cosima hahaha)..and her new dynamic with Donnie is the funniest BROTP this show has ever done (Sorry Felix/Alison) also Donnie treating her like family was a very nice "awww" moment too...
Ferdinand was ultra creepy (as expected) and now he saw Sarah in London the power dynamics at DYAD will surely be affected ...Next ep will def be interesting at DYAD ..All in all a good EP that moves things along ...And now.. time to prepare for that Season Finale (and all the CRAZY twists that will probably come with it).
Twist on the grandfather paradox, start taking bets on who says "I'm my own granddaughter!" c.f Alison in season 1, "I'm not even a real person." :)
ReplyDeleteSo did I get it right? The embryo S' mother absorbed in the womb is the Castor original (cool rare medical condition they included there), and we know Castor and Leda are twins.
ReplyDeleteSo, is S' mother herself the Leda donor or does she have a sister?
Because if she is indeed the donor for Leda, then this brings on a weird plot hole. How did Mrs S not recognize Sarah, as she was growing up, looking identical as her mother? Or was that genetically altered? Because I'm sure she would've recognized the similarity then. Even more, shouldn't S' mother have immediately recognized Sarah as.. herself, just younger?
Sarah herself states that she probably is Leda, too. So.. I'm not sure what to think here.
Hey Romain, are we getting an advanced preview for the season finale?
ReplyDeleteSorry for this late reply.
ReplyDeleteI read that in this website : http://www.bustle.com/articles/88595-orphan-black-creator-says-no-one-is-safe-leading-into-season-3-finale-more-spoilers
I have to agree with you on that point : Orphan Black IS Tatiana Maslany.
