  • 15th July - Concept Art
In this concept art for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, you can see all your favorites: Drax, Groot, Yondu, Star-Lord, Rocket, Nebula, and Gamora. But wait! Who’s that alien lady with the antennae?

The answer is a brand-new character named Mantis, an acquaintance of the Guardians played by actress Pom Klementieff (Spike Lee’s Oldboy). “She has never really experienced social interaction,” says executive producer Jonathan Schwartz. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”

Mantis may not be the only new character, according to Schwartz, who says audiences will be treated to a very different Groot from the stoic man-tree of the original 2014 film. “He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot,” Schwartz says. “He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”

  • 25th April 2016 - Nathan Fillion To Cameo As Wonder Man
Fan favorite Firefly star Nathan Fillion is Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

In the Marvel Comics Universe, Simon Williams is a former members of the Masters of Evil, and brother of villain the Grim Reaper, who reformed and joined the Avengers. Williams eventually retired from the Avengers to pursue an acting career. He was later dragged back into the Avengers’ active roster, despite becoming a pacifist, as a member of the Avengers Unity Division. He paid the ultimate price while defending the Earth from the Apocalypse Twins.

Photos surfaced online (via Jonathan Hunter) recently that show Fillion’s face on several mock movie posters surrounding a theater in Cartersville, Ga. The theater’s marquee reveals the theater is hosting a Simon Williams movie festival. The posters range in tone from romantic comedy Oh, Rebecca, to a Conan-esque poster for a movie about Conan-esque Marvel Comics character Arkon, and a Steve Jobs style poster for a biopic about Tony Stark, all starring Williams.

  • 17th February 2016 - Production Begins - Press Release

Marvel Studios has begun principal photography at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, on Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” which is slated to hit U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017. The production will shoot at Atlanta’s Pinewood Studios.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is written and directed by James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Slither”). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (“Jurassic World,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (“Spectre,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”) as Drax; Vin Diesel (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Furious 7”) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (“Joy,” “American Sniper”) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Jumper”) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Big Short”) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Gilmore Girls”) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (“Oldboy”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby,” “Everest”), Chris Sullivan (“The Knick,” “The Drop”) and Kurt Russell (“The Hateful Eight,” “Furious 7”).

Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is produced by Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Nik Korda and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

Director James Gunn’s creative team also includes director of photography Henry Braham (“The Legend of Tarzan,” “The Golden Compass”); production designer Scott Chambliss (“Star Trek,” “Tomorrowland”); editors Fred Raskin (“The Hateful Eight,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Craig Wood (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”); three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”); Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Chris Townsend (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3”); stunt coordinator Tommy Harper (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ); co-producer / first assistant director Lars Winther (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”); and six-time Oscar® nominee, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (“Captain America: Civil War,” “The Avengers”).

The original “Guardians of the Galaxy” was a hit with critics and audiences alike, earning over $770 million at the worldwide box-office, and holds the record as the most successful debut film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition, the film’s soundtrack went platinum and was nominated for a Grammy®.

Based on the Marvel comic characters first published in 1969, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ” continues the lineage of epic big-screen adventures chronicled in “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Ant-Man,” and the upcoming release schedule, which includes “Captain America: Civil War” on May 6, 2016; “Doctor Strange,” November 4, 2016; “Spider-Man,” July 7, 2017; and “Thor: Ragnarok” on November 3, 2017.

Marvel Studios continued its unprecedented success in 2015 with the release of “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” At the time of release, the film recorded the second biggest opening weekend of all time with a $191.3 million box office. It has also been the #1 release in every country where it has opened and has grossed over $1.4 billion in global box office. The studio also successfully launched another franchise with “Ant-Man,” starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly. The film opened #1 at the box office on July 17 and went on to gross more than $519 million at the worldwide box office. The film propelled the Marvel brands’ #1 domestic box-office opening streak to a record-breaking 12 consecutive films.

  • 30th December 2015 - Thanos Not Expected to Appear
We don't know when we'll see the Marvel Cinematic Universe's big bad Thanos next but it won't come in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, advised, "I wouldn't look too hard in [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2] for Thanos." We were going to, seeing as Thanos made his first non-post-credits scene appearance in the first Guardians.

Sure, we'll have to wait, but it sounds like it will be worth it. Fans have criticized Thanos for sitting around in his floating throne somewhere in the galaxy without doing anything himself, but Feige says that won't be the case next time. Remember, he grabbed himself an Infinity Gauntlet by the time Avengers: Age of Ultron's credits were through. "The next time we see Thanos he will not be messing around. It will be, 'Oh, that's why they've been teasing this villain for five years,'" Feige explained while speaking to Empire magazine.

Marvel has not officially offered Russell the coveted part yet, nor has Russell read the script, but meetings are expected to take place soon.

  • 29th October 2015 - Pom Klementieff Cast in a Mystery Role
Marvel conducted a wide search for its mystery part, which called for an Asian actress, doing several rounds of chemistry reads.

Relative unknown Pom Klementieff has nabbed one of the new key roles in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

The role is a big break for Klementieff, who has mostly worked in France. She did, however, appear in Spike Lee’s recent remake of Japanese thriller Oldboy in a role that demanded physicality and martial arts. Oldboy was her entrée into American and English-language movies.

  • 26th August 2015 - Vin Diesel Returning
Answering fan questions on Facebook, James Gunn confirmed that Vin Diesel will be back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as everyone’s favorite space tree.

It’s not exactly clear what Groot will look like in Vol. 2, as when we last saw the enormous humanoid tree, he was reduced to a tiny (dancing) sprout. Diesel recorded countless versions of Groot’s signature phrase (“I am Groot”) for the original, even saying his lines in French, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portugese, and Mandarin.
