The actor, who played Dr. Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), will appear in director Paul Feig's upcoming installment of the franchise, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Murray has long been resistant to star in a third Ghostbusters. He told David Letterman earlier this year that his hesitancy stems from Ghostbusters II not having been as well-received as the first one.

Feig's film, which is currently shooting, stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth. It hits theaters on July 22, 2016.

Ghostbusters hits theater on July 22, 2016.

  • 27th January 2015 - All Female Cast Chosen
Melissa McCarthy, who was already in talks for one of the leads, has signed on for the Paul Feig-directed reboot, and Sony is now negotiating with Kristen Wiig as well as Saturday Night Live players Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Negotiations are ongoing, but the quartet are expected to sign on as the specter-seeking, poltergeist-punishing, phantom-phollowing foursome in the reboot, which is eyeing a summer shoot in New York.

McCarthy and Wiig have worked with Feig before, both breaking out in the director’s Bridesmaids.

  2. is there any word on Bill Murray, Dan Acroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver or Rick Morranis doing a cameo?

  3. Aykroyd* Moranis* And god I wish!!! I still hate the idea of this being an all female cast, but if Bill or any of the originals came back, i'd watch. But if i remember correctly i think they declined once Harold died. = (

  4. so I'm not the only one...thank god. I was fearing that I was sexist or anything but the idea of gender swapping just irritates me. Especially since McCarthy irritates me beyond belief recently, she crossed the line from being a comedian to becoming a one dimensional fat joke (to me). I like Wiig and I'm totally on board with Chris Hemsworth turning the "hot secretary" stereotype around.
But there's something that irks me about the idea of completely gender swapping the characters.

I heard that Murray kinda blocked production for a while and enraged his former castmates and that THAT was the actual reason 3 didn't get made before Ramis passed.

Sorry about the names, but come on...Aykroyd is a weird name to memorize :P

while speaking about Ramis: I recently rewatched "Year One" (his last movie) and it actually seemed better now than when I initially watched it. Some pretty well nuanced jokes in there (when you ignore the dull Jack Black comedy moments). Worth a rewatch :)

  5. No you're not the only one. I absolutely hate big changes when it comes to something/someone iI've grown up watching and loving. Especially gender swapping. Just Noooo. I mean hell, let's make a female TMNT movie then. Smmfh. Just no. I like the cast, I'm just against the movie as they have changed my lovable characters into women. So I won't bother.

I remember that. Bill blocking production. You're right about that. Now that you reminded me that was the reason. And the correction On spelling, I can't help it, just run with it. = p and Hell to the no!! I wouldn't rewatch that movie again if you paid me.

  6. Odds of SNL doing something Ghostbusters related this season is like 350% guaranteed by now.

  7. This truly looks like a parody.

  9. Overall I have no problem with this movie existing, like the cast seems solid but my biggest issue is I find Paul Feig's movies painfully unfunny and so if Ghostbusters is anything like them I won't be watching.
