  • 2nd October 2015 - Jeremy Irons & Brendan Gleeson Join Cast
Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson are joining the cast of Assassin’s Creed starring opposite Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard for director Justin Kurzel, New Regency and UbiSoft Motion Pictures; Fox is distributing. The live-action film is an adaptation of the wildly popular Ubisoft video game. Irons plays Cotillard’s father. Gleeson plays Fassbender’s father. This is one heck of a lineup as the production companies are very smartly reaching beyond the already established Assassin’s Creed brand and have put together a high-quality cast.

Thanks to Sissi for the heads up.

Meet Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch in Assassin’s Creed.

Before hardcore Assassin's Creed gamers start scratching their heads (and filling up the comments) about how exactly Callum Lynch fits into the game world, we can tell you that Fassbender’s character was created specifically for the film. (The movie isn’t retelling any of the existing games, but rather introducing new characters into the same world.)

Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.

  • 24th June 2015 - Ariane Labed Joins Cast

Ariane Labed, the Greek-born French actress who made such a stirring impression in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Cannes fave The Lobster, has boarded the cast of Assassin’s Creed. The Justin Kurzel-directed New Tegency live-action adaptation of the Ubisoft video game stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. This would be the highest profile role yet for the 31 year old actress who already has a clutch of awards under her belt for her fearless work. She won the Best Actress award in Venice in 2010 for her performance in Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg. She also won the Locarno Best Actress award last year for her work in Lucia Borleteau’s Fidelio, Alice’s Odyssey.

Labed will play the role that Alicia Vikander was circling at one point. The Danish actress could not get the dates to fit with her other commitments- namely her role in the upcoming Jason Bourne instalment for Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass. The Assasssin’s Creed producers have moved quickly to lock down one of Europe’s most exciting and versatile actresses in Labed.

  • 9th July 2012 - Michael Fassbender Starring In And Co-producing Film

When he's not playing a cold, conniving artificial man, Michael Fassbender is sharpening his hidden blade (and his hidden check book). Not because he's way into hidden knives (he isn't, as far as we know), but because he'll be playing the starring role in an upcoming Assassin's Creed film adaptation, says Variety.

Fassbender's company DMC Film is co-producing the film as well, teaming up with Ubisoft Motion Pictures. It's unclear which part of the game's canon will form the basis of the film, if any. Variety says the "plot revolves around a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts," which sounds like a game revolving around Desmond to us. It also sounds like the basic root of the entire game franchise, so ... do with that what you will.

The new deal with Fassbender's DMC Film helps to put Ubi's previous Sony talks to bed. Talks last November apparently fizzled, though Ubi is still open to "re-discuss" things "once the production package is finalized." Ubisoft Motion Pictures will hire the project's director and writer before getting involved with any third parties – a response to the lackluster reception Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time got at the box office, which Ubi apparently attributes (at least in part) to a lack of creative control over its own property.

  • 16th May 2011 - Film In Development
Ezio Auditore, Sam Fisher and The Ghosts are about to go Hollywood. This weekend, Ubisoft Motion Pictures confirmed plans to break into the movie biz with 3D films based on the Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell franchises.

The movies are the first projects to be green lit by Ubisoft's newly formed film and TV branch in Paris. They are being developed with consultation from Ubisoft's gaming wing in an effort to stay true to their video game roots.

  1. Ok, so we ARE following Desmond's story. I'm curious who the assasins are..?

New ones or some from the games?

  2. I am not sure if I am happy with the cast. Fassbender and Cotillard? Well I will have to wait and see

  3. not impressed. Fassbender is too old for Desmond and too white to Altair, which I would rather like to see, but guess they are going to just skip up to Ezio or a general flash through all of them. but that might not fly if they want to milk it for a 3 pic deal.

    either way, meh, so far.

  4. I just hope fassbender is not play Desmond.

  5. I'm not sure about not wanting him to play Desmond. He's a fine actor, sure, physically he doesn't fit any relative of Desmond (Haytham or Edward maybe) but I'd rather have him as Desmond instead of some unrelatable actor.

Video game based movies usually have horrible casting decisions. The only good ones were Shawn Roberts as Wesker, Angeline Jolie as Lara Croft and Kevin Durand as Barry.

  6. I was hoping for them to do a movie treating the sci-fi aspect as a mystery until the very end. Like the movie ending with an eden artifact being revealed and the subject waking up in an animus leaving it on a cliffhanger. Plus they could have used a different bloodline of assassins, in a new era with a new assassin.

That said: I'd totally love to see Altair in movie form, despite liking the first game the least I loved the atmosphere it had so much. The Ezio trilogy sure had the better story and better protagonist but the crusade-era is so under-developed that I'd love to see more

But I'm pretty sure that the movie will follow the era and timeframe the 2016 release of AC is using.

  7. people always seem to discount Altair for some reason. I found Ezio tedious but not as much as AC3, couldn't get through that game but did like Haytham.

do you mean a future game or Unity/Rouge?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I agree with that, I shall not speak of Prince Of Persia, eesh, and those are kind of a low bar (actor/movie) wise, though I do like Durand in general.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I thought they were loosely basing the film on the game but not using any of the original characters. That's what I read on imdb anyway.

  10. I liked the movie and Gyllenhals performance in it but I agree that the casting choices were odd, essentially everyone in this movie was white. That being said the prince in the games was also oddly white. So I don't really blame them.

Well, the Resident Evil movies are still hugely successfull at the box office so I wouldn't set the bar that low, they're dumb sci-fi/zombie flicks. If you embrace them for what they are they're fun.

  11. Well, Altair wasn't fleshed out, he was a fairly bland character. Unlike Ezio who was a cocky prick. I guess Altair has a lot of story left to tell.

Well, it took me a while to get used to AC3 and while I wasn't too fond of Connor I did like the supporting characters. Haytham was a great antagonist (and the "I am your father" thing was awesome) and Achilles the best kind of Yoda one could want. Plus the world was just gorgeous.

A new one, Rogue/Unity came out last year with Syndicate coming out this year. Since Ubisoft seems to be releasing a new AC title each year (wich I don't mind as they still are pretty fantastic story and gameplay wise) we can assume that 2016 will also see the release of a game parallel with the movie.

  12. Not really possible to tell a story in the AC world without using any of the characters and organizations.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I really liked the first RE and I do like how as they progressed it was basically a uwe boll "were going for this shit, bigger and more ridiculous" mentality.

    ReplyDelete
  14. forgot about Syndicate, which is probably telling on how a bit burnt I am on the series, and some of the worlds just don't thrill me.

Revolutionary America, meh, but the Industrial Revolution may be a bit better but interesting/odd they are placing at the tail end of the second revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I get that, some games just don't thrill others after a while. To me the AC series is still as exciting as it was when the first one came out.

I liked the idea of the revolution being essentially as Templar vs. Assassin clash.

Unity had a neat story as well

    ReplyDelete
  16. yeah, 18th/19th century politics/history bore the shit out of me.

    skipped Unity

and its not the dynamics of the game, its the locations, they are just a big snooze. though I did thoroughly enjoy the seafaring in Black Flag.

  17. no the website said they would use the Templars but not desmond and altair

  18. As a fan of the game I series, I have 0 expectations from the movie. Ubisoft has been destroying the franchise for some time now with yearly releases and stuff, but AC has got an interesting story to say. I just hope it won't be in one movie. 2 hours is not much to see Altair and Ezio's adventures or perhaps it'll be more focused on present day and the protagonist not necessarily experiencing any of the memories other than gathering info and skills.

  19. As a non-gamer I have zero expectations fot this...

  21. As a gamer, and a fan, I'm excited and very scared at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't mind yearly releases as long as the product maintains its quality and that it does without a doubt. Unity had flaws but was actually pretty fantastic if you look beyond the bugs. Rogue was great thanks to an amazing storyline. Black Flag offered more variety than any game in the past few years and while certainly flawed AC3 was still pretty impressive.

The only AC title I actually dislike because it didn't add anything and was just milking was Revelations wich had an okay storyline but was essentially a recycled AC Brotherhood.

Comparing the AC series to CoD, wich also gets yearly releases, is pretty telling as the Assassin's Creed series actually is hellbent on delivering variety.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yearly releases isn't the problem itself, or the quality that's not as high as it should had been. I was talking about their practices in general. Not gonna get into it but this is a company that tries to milk a very interesting universe they created in every way possible. The movie for which I have no expectations like I said it's just the latest attempt to cash into it. Bottom line, I have been with the series almost since day and this is a company I try to give as little money as possible anymore. Not as bad as cod because it actually has an interesting universe/lore/story, well, most of the times anyway xD. Excluding 3 and black flag which was beyond fun but had very little to do with a traditional assassins creed game. Also, I know many people who don't appreciate that kind of gameplay and see it as meaningless and for the sake of filling up a world with repetitive activities.

Not gonna get into Unity which I haven't played yet. For that mistake, they have paid the price. Or rogue which may has an interesting story but nothing really new to offer. A shortest, re-skinned version of 4. Could had been even worse considering they almost simultaneously released 2 games for different consoles, but yeah, that says something about them.
