'ODD COUPLES' REVIEW
So we have moved on from the Savi drama of the premiere episodes and transitioned into some sort of normality in regards to the ladies. This was a good enough episode that had some interesting plot developments and scenes, especially in regards to April who I found to be my favourite of the episode. Firstly though, it was pretty cool to see Toni in this episode after her drama with Savi in season 2, and she seemed very friendly with April when first greeting her which threw me off a little. My mouth kinda dropped to the floor when the insurance woman visited April and told her she owed $200,000 because of her husband's fake death, despite him being dead now. That is a hell of a lot of money and it really pushed April to the breaking point, and I don't blame her. I continued to like her dynamic with Marc and we got a little more backstory with him being 3 months sober, which was interesting, but nothing really romantic between the pair just yet. For now, they seem to be firmly in the friend zone, helping one another out in their times of need. I could do without the Lucy drama at the minute if I'm honest - she's just annoying me now. I can get where she's coming from but I'm hoping this whole thing will be resolved very soon. I just feel very sympathetic towards April.
I felt super sorry for Karen when she was in hospital about to get the procedure done. It made me feel so nauseous watching it, I can't imagine how scared Karen would have been. Even though Alec is a bit of a douche, I have to say I enjoy his scenes with Karen. They bounce off each other pretty well, even if what Alec says is degrading to Karen - she can hold her own against him. Even though the girls, in the last episode, promised to be together always, it felt like Karen was by herself again, which I know was unavoidable but I always see her as lonely. And despite Joss stealing the show in the premiere, she didn't blow me away in this episode. I do really like her scenes with Calista and their friendship is getting interesting to watch, but seeing Joss become a model for a day to help Calista out was far from exciting. I loved their scene in the bathroom though and it was nice to see Joss on that stage as she looked so gorgeous, but in terms of scope, this was a very filler storyline for Joss.
Calista, on the other hand, really needed this episode to build upon her characterisation I think. We learn a lot more about her and that she isn't just a rich woman with very little care of the people around her. She's very much human and I liked her talk with Joss in the end about how intense she becomes when she really likes people. I was hoping for a big first meeting between Calista and the others, but instead we only got a brief hello-and-goodbye with Karen. I guess that's good in a way because they're making her incorporation into the show more natural than anything else. I do want more scenes of her with the others though, but I am happy with how she has been with Joss. I probably could have done without Harry's storyline with Niko too, and I thought that, with Joss seeing them together, there'd be a rift, but with Calista's wise help, Joss didn't go down that route. I was expecting her to, but she surprised me. Calista is turning out to be a very big help to Joss.
On another more interesting note, was Calista really going to smother that man at the start of the episode? Does she have psychotic tendencies? I wasn't sure what to expect there but it does provide some mystery about Calista. I hope this isn't forgotten about and could potentially be a big storyline. All in all, this was a pretty good episode and they're making the transition as smooth as possible with Calista and it's paying off. I feel like they need to do more with Joss now her sister being gone storyline is over, and her relationship with Harry isn't the most interesting thing on the show right now. I really enjoyed Karen and Alec in this episode, and even April and Marc - I actually love these new potential romances. I'm looking forward to seeing if anything materialises between these budding couples - and by the looks of the promo of the next episode, Karen may be getting more than she bargained for!

How are you guys adjusting to Mistresses? Enjoy last night's episode? Let me know your thoughts :)
ReplyDeleteNice review Gavin. I really enjoyed the episode. All the individual stories we got were nicely delivered and made this an entertaining hour of television.
ReplyDeleteReading your review and with the preview in mind, I've got to the idea that Karen will get pregnant during the upcoming hook up. She needs someone for her and think they will go that route.
April was so amazing this week, her moments with Toni were so funny. I was surprised with Toni being that open but that is Toni. She does all she can to overplay the awkwardness and create a false bond with someone to feel accepted.
I loved Calista and the progression of her story this week. Calista was a great choice casting wise and the writing is spot on. Her and Joss have a great chemistry, I would've enjoyed to see how it would look if Savi was there. The bathroom scene was the best of the episode, my heart broke when that model called out Calista. She needs to cut off that cheating Ahole asap.
Thanks Spindae2! Oooh, very interesting idea about Karen. Could you imagine if that happened? Wow! I think it would be awesome to watch how she deals with that! I agree completely with your assessment of Toni, I think I'd like to see more of her if I'm honest. And yes, Calista was perfectly cast. That bathroom scene - love! Thanks so much for reading and leaving your thoughts :D
ReplyDeleteI love April and Marc chemistry my favorite storyline this season
ReplyDeleteMe too, April is starting to become my fav now, her storyline is my favourite at the minute :)
ReplyDeleteNothing to thank me for! ^_^. I enjoy our reading and commenting.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I think they are pushing a bit towards Karen getting pregnant. She is a bit of the spoiled looner and making space for a baby will be a selfless move and I'm quite intrigued how she'll handle that it would be certainly hilarious. The only bad thing with last nights numbers renewal seems unlikely.
It would be nice to see Toni get a couple of nore appearances, she is funny and has a sexy accent. ;-)
I am loving this eason , it's so different without Sabi cause one and two were all about ehr and what happened to her and now we see more of the other girls tho the main focus is Joss, i like how they go for one story to the other and then all the girls talking. How all their separate stories fit together it's so good.
ReplyDeleteGreat review Gavin. I thougth youw ent going to review this show.
I am really worried about Mistresses's future now. If ratings get worse, I don't see us getting a 4th season :( Boo!
ReplyDeleteI will be heartbroken if they'll cancel the show. I hope they can rebounce a bit and give us one more scandalous summer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for leaving your thoughts Ron! I reviewed the last few episodes of season 2 when I joined SpoilerTV in August last year, and did the advance preview of the premiere so I'm starting regular reviews this season with this episode :)
ReplyDeleteWell, the title of 3.05 tells me Karen, Dr Adams and Vivian will indeed have a threesome. This has trouble written all over it. Karen is a psychologist for God's sakes, she should know better than foll for a married man again...or will it be woman in the end to shake things up a lil bit?
ReplyDeleteGavin, thank for the great review. I really love this season...probably more than prior ones, because so far, all of the stories are interesting....especially the April and Karen storylines which no longer feel like fillers. I was skeptical about Jennifer Esposito taking Alyssa Milano's place, but so far, I really like the dynamic between her and Joss. I was hoping that she'd become one of the group, but I have this sneaking suspicion that her story will take a dark turn, but I'm really hoping I'm wrong. No matter how you explain it, I still think that checking out Harry behind Joss' back was really creepy, almost like "single white female" or Leighton Meester in "The Roommate" creepy, especially wtih the scene with her almost smothering her husband..although maybe she just wanted to interrupt the snoring.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the April and dynamic being fun to watch. Poor April has a history of dating guys who don't deserve her, but Mark is a likable character who shows a lot of potential for good character development. Also, I'll be curious to see what happens if he starts working in Harry's restaurant. I actually like Harry's character, so I don't mind the restaurant scenes (minus Niko, though). However, I agree 100% about the Lucy story being annoying. I hope that chapter concludes pretty soon.
The Karen storyline is another classic Karen story. I feel terrible for her, because now that she's stopped practicing and broke up with her partner (I forgot his name), I think there's a big void that she's trying desperately to fill...and probably not in the best ways. I keep I can't see how this story with the married couple can end well. In summary....another great episode. I can't wait 'till next week!
Let's keep positive then ;)
ReplyDelete3.05 episode's name is very... on the nose haha. It certainly does suggest that. Karen does so much stuff that makes you think she's supposed to know better haha but she's learning that it's very easy to find herself in her patient's position when she gives into her scandalous desires. It's why I like her so much :P Karen could certainly explore a bit.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jordana! I have to agree - the storylines are far more interesting than, say, last season. I mean, I did love the start of Savi's story with her choice between Dom and Harry and the guy who crashed into her seemingly following her. But in terms of the other characters at this point in season 2 - totally forgettable. Now? It feels more shared and I like that. I had your same concerns for Jennifer Esposito but it just showed me that I have to give things a chance before judging before I see them. I agree with every word! The smothering thing could come back as she does seem pretty dark deep down, and the whole checking Harry out was a little too much for her to do when she had basically just met Joss.
ReplyDeleteSo looking forward to next week, hope you will be there to join me :D
