Killjoys - The Sugar Point Run - Advanced Preview

Killjoys, “The Sugar Point Run,” was written by Jeremy Boxen and directed by Chris Grismer. Boxen, who is also co-exec producing, should also be familiar from Lost Girl. Grismer also directed the first episode, so there’s a nice continuity already in the look and feel of the show. This second episode picks up right from the first, but there’s a great re-cap to start off. It’s another fast paced episode, with some great action.

In case you missed the first episode, the re-cap reminds us that D’Avin (Luke Macfarlane) had to have done something in order to have had a warrant placed on him in the first place. For his own part, D’Avin is curious about Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen). D’Avin points out to John (Aaron Ashmore) that someone put a lot of time into training her. D’Avin wonders that John isn’t more curious to know who. We are also reminded that the mysterious man from Dutch’s past has given her a red box, and in the past, that has always meant that she will have a duty to perform.

Not surprisingly, the episode revolves around a warrant. In this instance though, the company gives Dutch no choice but the take the warrant – it’s usually the reclamation agent’s prerogative whether they do or not. We learn more about the political state of the Quad and Westerly in particular. The group must go to the Sugar Point of the title in order to carry out the warrant. In many ways the episode felt a bit like Escape From New York to me.

Our group of killjoys end up between a rock and a hard place and then have to split up in order to complete their mission, with D’Avin and Dutch teaming up again. We see some new weapons. Dutch manages to impress D’Avin in a tight situation, and Dutch makes D’Avin an offer. Dutch also goes looking for answers.

Once again, the episode moves along pretty well, with some nice one-liners thrown in to break the tension. We get to see a little more character development as well. I liked that there weren’t a lot of flashy special effects so that the ones they do use are good.

Here are a few quotes – as always, they are in no particular order and I’ll leave it up to you to figure out who is speaking!

“Yeah. Well, I know what end’s pointy.”
“Asses in both hands – we’re coming in hard.”
“Copy that. No buying love.”
“You stuck your head in the wrong door.”
“Enjoy your night boys. I’ve got some business to square.”
“Warrant served by a neutral party helps keep things clean.”
“I think I’m about to do something crazy.”
“This is Westerly. Low is the standard.”

Don’t forget to tune in to the Killjoys on Friday, June 26 at 9/8c on Syfy!

  1. Does it get graphic? GoT level? Please say no.

  2. It's on Syfy. It's never going to get that graphic...

  3. Examples: : Lost Girl, Bitten and Dominion, they're all graphic right?

  4. Isn't there nudity JUST like the HBOs?

  5. Unlikely. There might be scenes where people are naked but you wont see anything. I think Swearing might be the limit here guys.

  6. "Swearing" but not f-bombs right? You mean just on Killjoys right? Because Bitten DID show that guy's butt right?

  7. Ivan: Whilst that's nudity yes, we are talking Cinemax style here right? I think you might see the backs of people but not the front.. if that makes it easier. And most likely we will see a 'f--k' or 'shit' style of language being used. Which would make sense, they seem to be showing a lot of lower class areas and they are tracking people who generally arnt pleasant types . It would make sense for the language in the show to be more base.

and an f-bomb is Swearing. It would be great if like BSG they made up their own swear words.

  8. Yeah that's what i meant HBO/Starz style, ooh space words i like that! But wouldn't there have to be aliens to have alien language? I mean if you have humans it would sound weird if they originate it. How did it originate it on BSG Did an alien first say or was it a human?

  9. Frak was a colonial word (originally created for the original BSG many many years ago to get around the inability to swear on camera. ) Its obviously a derivation of the word 'f-ck'. or 'shit'. I believe the first person to ever use it was the original Male Starbuck.

It only sounds weird if you dont know what its really meaning. Everytime a person says Frak you know why they are using it because of the situation.

  10. No, its just a made up word :). Its a human society set in another star system. You need to give them at least something that differences them from Earthlings :)

  11. oh, you meant just that, but i've never seen any thing excplicit done on any syfy shows, so I've never considered it that way.

  12. True that LOL, speaking of Star Systems do you think in the future that it could actually be possible to have civilization out in the galaxy or are we just the only life in the entire universe? Strange i know but i've been think about ever since i started seeing Dark Matter LOL.

  13. Well yeah that too but the language as well.

  14. Your sense of "graphic" is more rigid than the FCC's I think. S*** but never F*** - so technically no real swearing. No frontal nudity, so no nudity. Backsides just don't count according to the censors.

  16. Okay i handle the S word, i see Continuum after all LOL, so does that mean butts are possible? Continuum did it once and i hated it.

  17. So wait you dont mind lots of violence on TV but any naked stuff is bad? Confused.

  18. Im Australian. My knowledge of swear words is second only to a British Soccer Hooligan

  19. Clearly, we should be friends - I'm pretty sure that I was a pirate in a former life... now just a curser connoisseur....

  20. I expect a love scene at some point, so always possible.

  21. I DO mind violence, i could barely handle Daredevil actually.

Hey Lisa! I saw you used to do reviews for 'Revolution' over at NBC. I have to say, I am probably the biggest fan. Did you read the comic book ending? It would be great if you did a review for them!
