We're going to try something new for some select shows during the summer and try opening up the polls and comments as the episode starts airing so you can discuss the show as it unfolds.

ReplyDeleteThe most visually stunning thing on TV. Mesmerizing but I still found myself missing Will . Their location shooting in Florence last December was well displayed.

ReplyDeleteLoved that we got more insight into the mysterious Hannibal/Bedelia relationship. Mads and Gillian continue to be deliciously beautiful in their roles and tonight was no exception. We also got some very important flashbacks! So happy that Zachary Quinto is playing Bedelia's dead patient after all. Can't wait to find out more about his story and what truly happened that Bedelia did the unthinkable and kill him in episode 10. Also, there was something so artistic about Hannibal and Abel eating each and every limb of Mr. Gideon. Soon enough, he won't be able to eat himself and dinner is all ruined. "I'm just fascinated to know how you'll feel when all of this happens to you" Me too. Should be very exciting.
Well Anthony certainly didn't last long enough did he? And who wouldn't love a threesome with Bedelia and Hannibal? That would be something special. But in all honesty, that's what you get for being a smartass towards our Hannibal Lecter. I did love their interactions though. They were great. And poor Bedelia. She was so close to escaping Florence but Hannibal stopped her right then and there. I loved that we got to learn more about her character and clearly see what was going through her head while she's in Florence when she dipped her head in the bathtub. That alone tells us a whole lot. Anyone want to play Observe or Participate?
I'm so anxious to see Will get back into the action next week! Here comes Mr. Graham's wrath.

ReplyDeleteThis episode is by far one of the top 5 episodes that has aired this year and overall, the series is completely overdue for critical attention.
And Will"s dogs. I still miss Beverly but a lot of good that's going to do her.

I tend to not read too much of Hannibal's synopsis/press releases incase they reveal too much (I'm looking at you press release for Yakimono that spoiled Miriam Lass' still being alive). Based from the S3 trailer, he's probably looking for forgiveness/closure with Hannibal then.

Okay someone correct me if I am wrong in my thinking of the timeline and Bedelia's thought process.
Here goes:
Bedelia first ran off in S2 when she was sure that Hannibal would come after her and he did in fact come after her. Only he was too late. The we see tonight that Bedelia returned to her home - maybe she thought that the FBI would be successful. Only now, she finds Hannibal in her shower washing away the blood that had gotten on him during that bloodbath that was the end of S2. I believe, immediately after this is their escape to Europe. Then to France where Hannibal meets
Now the questions arise: Is Bedelia a hostage of Hannibal? Why did Bedelia run away with Hannibal? Was it due to some instinct of self preservation? Maybe she was sure that at that moment, if she hadn't gone with him, he would have killed her right then and there. Living with Hannibal - is it the way for her to survive? From the expressions on her face throughout the episode, it seemed to me that Bedelia was not okay at all with Hannibal's extra curricular activities. While sitting at the station, waiting for the train, we can clearly see her turn towards the camera and show her face fully - is this Bedelia's way of silently screaming for help?
During the lecture, Hannibal indirectly threatened Bedelia when he talked about betrayal and its consequences. Was it the tipping point that made her run from there or was it the appearance of the man from Paris at the lecture and the possible threat of exposure should he open his mouth? My thinking is that it was bit of both.
Thoughts?
Edit: I will see this episode again later tonight (early morning here) with subtitles. Sometimes, Mads is difficult understand and English is not my native language.
Captivating premiere as "Hannibal" always delivers and leaves you wanting more with their premiere episodes! Gillian Anderson stole the show with a grade "A" performance tonight, which is saying something since she shared this episode with Madds (no need to highlight how great a actor he is). Abel put it right in front of Hannibal that it will be his hubris (arrogant believe in his genius intellect) that will prove his downfall. Even Bedelia has warn him of this in her own way, but Hannibal just refuses to see it. Bedelia is being "blackmailed" by Hannibal who knows she murdered her patient (the one he sent to her...........suspicious), which is why she can't just run away is how it appears to me. Anyone seeing it differently? So glad Hannibal is back on, if I had to pick 3 series and only 3 series to watch from now 'til "kingdom come":

Hannibal is "blackmailing" Bedelia with the death/murder of her patient, but I suspect it's not as "clear cut" and simply as it appears. Nobody 4 NOW!!!

ReplyDeleteSome incredibly beautiful imagery, adored all of the cooking sequences as well as the opening scene. Actually I loved probably every shot of the episode, felt a lot more colorful than the previous seasons.

For me that is what the episode was like. It was beautiful to watch, but there was a lack of substance behind what we were viewing, except for Dr. Gideon.
Bedelia was so closed off compared to how we have seen her, that all of the beauty was kind of lost on her fear and loathing. However I did find it really amusing that she was the cause of Mr. Dimmond finding Hannibal/the truth about Dr. Fell, but it again feels flat and ambiguous, since the flashback of their former patient,was only in the after math of events and that we didn't get to see a lively Quinto interact with either of them.
Obviously a lot of shout outs to the source material.
Hannibal Rising: The motor Bike, France, and the copper bathtub (Oh Bedelia, could be a bad sign)
Hannibal: Dr. Fell, Dante lectures, and an allegorical tableau in the Piazza, Bedelia juxtapose Clarice.
So thinking about why Bedelia did this at all, is still a mystery, but as for Hannibal, I have to assume that he sent her patient after her in order to bond with her, because she must have unlocked secrets he was guarding about his past, his sister, ect. It's the only thing that makes any sense...Obviously Bedelia's line also points out the Faustian element, in which will most likely lead Hannibal to place he really doesn't want to go...
He cooked his legs last season,. He woke up and his legs were cut off,. Then they did a flash back last night to that time.

ReplyDeleteThe show hasn't given that much thought to justice, although Will states at one point killing someone would feel righteous. Justice is part of the ordering of society, while the show seems more concerned with individual notions like revenge.

ReplyDeleteIf you read the novels, then you understand that it's not really about any one kind of justice, but what one can or cannot accept (social inclusion/social exclusion via belief systems). The Hannibal novel's themes are specifically about love, retribution, and corruption (even in law enforcement) this season will barrow some of Hannibal's novels themes (episodes 1-7 are Hannibal and Hannibal Rising mashup, which both feature revenge stories and episode 8-13 will be Red Dragon arc, which is were some justice may be served for a time...)

It's visually just not like the films, because he is using the novel Hannibal and Hannibal Rising as his pallet, rather than Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs.

Will's equivalent to a spiritual experience (knowing himself/being at peace) is wading in a quite stream. Much of his extrapolations, especially when he was behind bars, featured "dripping", being soaked, and drowning, a metaphor for loosing control and being taken over, which might metaphysically bridge to the accumulation of the seasons ending, a blood bath in which Hannibal baptises himeself in the rain...

Water is often thought to be associated with consciousness or subconsciousness. Something that absorbs and reflects truths of the unknown.

ReplyDeleteHe uses the material, but he uses it like a "mashup DJ". He gives characters dialogue from other characters, Harris' prose & even a prologue Harris wrote about himself. Changing the context of such things changes their meaning. The show has made itself its own distinctive thing (it's one of the loosest adaptations I can think of off the top of my head), and we are clearly getting Fuller's vision making use of Harris material.

This is more a reply to your spoilertv article: Fuller has stated in an interview that he never actually finished Hannibal Rising (though that could have changed since then). He's also given his reasons for changing the Margot character (and I also think someone a bit more like the novel's Margot could have made a fine Judy, although unfortunately it appears we won't get that).

Yes. That's not not true, but Will is still is said to have a spectrum of autism disorder in the TV show (see the Pilot episode), but in the show, and the film, and the novel Will is never "officially diagnosed" (so there is freedom here to go beyond), Additionally "time in reverse" comes from Stephen Hawking analogy from his work A Brief History of Time, that Hannibal both in the show and in the novel (Hannibal) are known to be a fans of, because this is THE reasoning about what Hannibal wants Starling for...
ReplyDelete.So Fuller added the already known idea or concept from the novel onto Will Graham's ability to make a point about why Hannibal would have ever been attracted to Will Graham, something Red Dragon alludes to, but NEVER explains and give us a better there line to what should be Hannibal's motives with Clarice Starling.
So again yes, it's not exact some liberties are taken, but the things he is using are things from the novels contextualized--it's not coming from out of thin air, he is just personifying them to make us more aware to them and solidify Harris work in a way that no one has ever seen VISUALLY.
Are you a Game of Thrones fan? I'm sure those who have read the novels, also see "more" than those who do not, because they have the INSIGHT to pick up on things being built and rearrange, that non readers can not see as well. It's the same for Hannibal and how Fuller has gone about representing it. There is more meat here
