Devious Maids - Awakenings - Review: "I Didn't Expect That"

Devious Maids ReviewsPlease note: English is not my first language.
Well, hello guys. I'm back! Many thanks to Gavin Hetherington who did the advance preview. I had to restrain myself from reading it since the year long wait was weighing on me. When I finally watched the season premiere, I thought: Okay. And then went to sleep. Some scenes were a standout for me and most of them didn't. I don't say I didn't enjoy it but it felt like a normal season episode for me than a season premiere. There has to be jaw-dropping moments. OMG moments, moments that makes you scream words. We've seen from Desperate Housewives that those disaster-episodes can be better. There was so much aftershocks after every episode. I hoped that it would seep into this show and that Marc Cherry would have a hand in this. Unfortunately, it gets (sorta) resolved in the first 5 minutes. Yes. Just. 5. Minutes. Be with me as I delve deeper into this episode to tell you why I liked some scenes and some I don't.
Who did Tyler shoot?
There were two people injured and one dead. That dead person is Pablo. Rosie was in coma for four months cause she got shot in her stomach. At first I thought this was the best outcome for me, but as I watched on, it might be the worst outcome.
I'll start with Zoila. Why Zoila? Because she got the biggest aftershock of those four ladies. She is still pregnant. Yay. Except it is from Pablo. You probably remember from my latest review that I hate Pablo. He was such a slimey character. While he was that to the adults in his life, he never was for Valentina. He was a great father to her. And now, this child will have no biological father when he/she is born. At first this scene felt like a comedy but quickly turned into a drama. Everybody noticed she got a little fat and thought of grieve-eating due to Pablo's death. Zoila has accepted that Pablo is gone and had just a little regret about how they left things. Genevieve has gotten Pablo's kidney. One of the good outcome of this. Because of that, Genevieve craves margarita's. Zoila comments she can't take it cause she's pregnant. Genevieve is ecstatic. That's it, until she gets a look from Zoila that Pablo might be the father. They quickly buy a test. Really? Is that how it goes in America? Is there even a pregnancy test-seller on the street? One day test and a call? Oh man, so many courtroom hearings could be settled with this. Alright, on with the story. Zoila has to yank some hairs from Javier to get the paternity tested. This was such a funny scene. And hello Javier! Is it just me, or does he seem a little bit thinner than before? Something is off about him. But he is still yummy. A while later, we get a call and it confirms that Pablo is the father. Zoila can't help it and cries. Judy Reyes was such a standout in this scene. You could tell from her eyes that she had such hopes for the future with Javier and that it might crumble. She resolves to tell Javier but as we know, Javier is so happy to be a father. She can't bring the words over her lips: You. Are. Not. The. Father. God, I hope Javier is really a knight in shining armor for Zoila and pulls through after he hears the truth. Zoila, tell him as soon as possible! Do it while you're still preggers. Then you can make an excuse about not knowing the date of conceivement or something like that.
Grade: A+ (I didn't enjoy Zoila in despair, but the acting and story was good in here)
Rosie. She was in coma for four months. When she asked if she still could go the honeymoon, the other ladies leaned in and told her it was four months. I thought they were gonna tell that she is paralyzed from the stomach. That would make a good storyline, since she then couldn't work as a maid anymore. Instead of this, we get a story where Spence is forced to work in the softcore porn industry for money, since he now cares for Miguel. Rosie forgives him. That's it. No bigger aftershock or so. Meh.
Grade: E- (Really, I did expect a lot more)
Marisol has a new book released. A tell-all about her going undercover and it is such a hit. So much that she is friends with Evelyn Powell now. Really??? 4 or 5 months ago, you, Evelyn, hated her cause she was with Nicholas and Dahlia was your friend. Now it's all swept under the rug like it's nothing. Anyway, the show got a little meta with Evelyn saying that the public enjoy her being a villain. The other three ladies commented that she has changed in the last few months and has to do something meaningful instead of just shopping. This get resolved in the same episode. Meh. If the writers made Marisol like that, at least own to it for at least a few episodes. Make it about surpressing her bad life or something like that. Escape her life by shopping. Shopping thief or whatever. Now she's just vain for apparently no reason.
Grade: E-
The Powells has been a standout in this episode. The writers know we love Evelyn being this. The Powells marriage has been going good since they got the answer they needed to hear. Barrett Powell wasn't killed due to Evelyn but due to Nicholas. Since then, it has been good. Except in bed. Things have been a little limp. Ha. The therapist say it's because they used to fight and that fueled their desire. Now it's all too lovey-dovey and that makes it 1 plus 1 is two. At the book party, Adrian meets a dominatrix and that makes him horny. Evelyn still won't have it. I immediately thought of Bree Van De Kamp. Oh, how I miss her. She, like Bree, will come around in the next few episodes. You bet.
Grade: B+
Valentina isn't dead. Thank god. But i felt that the chemistry is a little bit gone. I'm still #TeamRemy, but oh man, he is so overprotective of Valentina since the shooting. We learn it's all because of he ducked during the shooting and didn't protect her. Valentina said she doesn't need that. And she looks pretty good for someone who just lost her father. I know it's been four months. But come on. Now I don't mind they're recurring characters now.
Grade: F
The Stappords returned with an adopted child. She is really creepy. She poked some dagger at the book party and she bled. Looking on, she gets an idea. Did she kill someone? Was that limb in the Powell garden from her father? Or someone else at the party? We got a new maid too! Hello Santana, sorry, Bianca! I thought she couldn't shed Santana, but so far she does a good job. She is Marisol 2.0. Sorta. She gets to discover this season new mystery. And it looks pretty enticing.
Grade: C (Their scenes was much shorter than the others. If they had more, the grade would have gone up)
Carmen. Again the worst storyline of the week. Sebastien is and will be still a cheater. I think. He even gave her a house he doesn't rent!! The only thing that I enjoyed from him is his body. That's it.
Grade: I'm not gonna even grade this.
Overall grade: D-. Not so good, almost forgettable. I will amount this from every episode to grade the whole season.

Notes:
- Best storyline of the episode: Zoila's pregnancy and the worst goes to... Need I to say it?
- Best snappy oneliner: Evelyn: Things have been limp. This had me in stitches.
- I'm a little done with Remy, so my hunk of the week is Javier. Hope he pulls through. He must. #TeamJavier
- After writing this review, I'm feeling more disappointed with this episode. Where there I could write a lot more about the last episodes. I couldn't even muster the need to write more about the scenes that I didn't like. You can ask me for opinions and I will comment back in the comments section.
- With that said, I hope the next episode will be better and that this season mystery will get to the forefront.

I,for one,loved it.
ReplyDeleteDuring the shooting in the beginning,i noticed Remy ducking and i found that very odd.Imagine my surprise when they addressed that part-Brilliant detailing. The mystery setup was intriguing, can't wait to find out more.Evelyn stole the episode for me.Rebecca Wisocky was born to play this role.I'm Team javier too but i'm pretty sure he will dump him the instant the truth comes out and it will, very soon in the worst way possible. It always does.
The only things i didn't like were Rosie & Marisol's arc. Both felt odd & rushed and with no reason.
I didn't notice Remy ducking. Good eye. For the rest, you have the same opinion as me. What did you think of Bianca and this season mystery?
ReplyDeleteBianca-Need to see more episodes to say anything about her.For now, she's okay.
ReplyDeleteThe Mystery-It's realted to Taylor & Michael's Adopted child or so they announced.Something fishy is going on here. That girl was so creepy.Michael gave some Henchmen money to get some work done(Murder, perhaps) during Marisol's book-signing party. That person murdered the perp and put it underground in Evelyn's Garden.Unfortunately the dog dug it up-something was sticking out perhaps to draw the dog's attention.Plus did you notice that little girl deliberately cut her fingers to show she was bleeding. That was shady too.Plus that ending-So much blood.Taylor was looking like s**t when Bianca stumbled into her. What went down in that room?
So many questions-I hope we get some answers starting from episode 2.
It was my pleasure Rama! Thanks for letting me :) And awesome review, we shared a lot of the same thoughts :)
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that some of the scenes (Spence and the softcore movies for example) are setup for fun stuff later in the season. I have to agree with your about Remy and Valentina. While I like that t Remy is *NOT* just one of those rich boys trying to nail the maid; he really cares. I agree with you. These two have no chemistry anymore. I don't really think the actors ever did...from my perspective as a viewer...but since they finished the 'can they get together' story in season one....the couple hasn't interested me. But that's okay, because Remy's mother, Genevieve is hysterical.
ReplyDeleteGreat review. Thanks for sharing.
I think for once, they have to dial back their own drama. Just be there in each other presence and take a step back. Sometimes it helps being in the background then in the forefront.
ReplyDeleteGood theory! I almost forgot that henchman.
ReplyDeleteThanks.I always notice these small details for some weird reason, this is why i can predict most o the twists off late on television.Hints are always dropped in the episode itself, you just have to find it.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I need to turn off my mind and just watch. If I'm gonna analyze every scene of every show that I'm watching, I would go insane, lol.
