Whatever it takes...Degrassi: Next Class coming to Netflix and Family...

HALIFAX, June 9, 2015 /CNW/ - DHX Media Ltd. ("DHX" or the "Company") (TSX: DHX.A, DHX.B), a key player internationally in the creation of content for families and children, today announced Degrassi: Next Class, a new series in the critically acclaimed Degrassi franchise, will premiere on Netflix in early 2016. The deal will see Netflix become the worldwide home for Degrassi: Next Class, excluding Canada, Australia and France, where the series will appear on Netflix at later dates. The series will be shot at DHX Media's studio in Toronto, Canada.
Keeping true to the spirit of the Degrassi franchise, which generations have known and loved since 1980, Degrassi: Next Class is a pull-no-punches dramatic series that tackles the real-life issues of high school students. Telling the stories of "Generation Z," the series focuses on a group of teens as they begin their journey into adulthood. Pushing their own limits and testing the bonds of family and friends, the students each find their own way to deal with a range of issues: from homophobia, racism, substance abuse and violence to burgeoning sexuality, body issues, heartbreak and the complications of dating in the social media age. The series strives to entertain its post-millennial audience while always reinforcing its core principle: You are not alone.

Really? Netflix saves Degrassi (which I didn't even realize was still airing up until it was announced as 'cancelled' the other day) but doesn't save Constantine or Forever?

Supposedly Netflix has been interested in getting a Teen Drama for a while which is probably why they went with Degrassi over things like Constantine or Forever. I believe it gets a bunch of tax exemptions too so it's probably really cheap to produce.

I didn't even hear about this show until it was cancelled. Great for Netflix though.
ReplyDeleteI think this is more the case of Epitome having struck a deal with Netflix ahead of whatever contract renewal talks it was scheduled to have with Bell Media to keep the show running.
ReplyDeleteI guess Netflix figured a way to work out the financials that is too sweet for Epitome to pass up. In any case, it's not like Degrassi has had a steady home since it's humble CBC beginnings (CBC, CTV, MuchMusic, MTV Canada).
Stephen Stohn said on Twitter that they will eventually, but not right away as to avoid confusion between new and old episodes.

ReplyDeleteNot gonna lie as a Canadian I have never seen Degrassi.
ReplyDeleteForever won't be cheap since it's filmed in New York (and they Netflix doesn't appear to have much interest in procedurals) and they already have a ton of Marvel superhero stuff so they wouldn't want a cancelled DC property.

ReplyDeletelol I'm pretty sure I stopped watching around season 3 or 4, not too long after Ashley had become goth.
ReplyDeleteFor a teen drama I tend to think it's pretty good. It has times when it delves into shipper mess but when they do episodes dealing with issues or that are meant to strike a nerve...they do it amazingly well. ('Time Stands Still' and 'My Body Is A Cage' in particular still hit me today)

ReplyDeleteI think it's because the new episodes are going to be airing on Family in Canada. That's what it says in the tweet at the top anyway. They're probably going to be added after Family finishes airing them.
ReplyDeleteI feel that way too. They've been rehasing stories for years. How many things can happen to the same teenagers in such a short period of time? I hope there's some creative changes once Netflix takes over.

ReplyDeleteGay men, bisexual women, lesbians, jocks, punks....you name it and Degrassi has just churned up the most stereotypical people I've ever seen in any TV series. Well, The New Normal did a pretty good job of having stereotypes as well, but Degrassi is the OG of it all. But....the shinning light is that it is on Netflix, so maybe there will be this creative jump that will make this new series/reboot feel actually original.

ReplyDeleteIt mostly is (pretty much a soap opera or a shipper drama). The only thing that really keeps me coming back to it are the heavy hitting episodes. When they do them, they tend to do them really really well.
ReplyDeleteThe shooting episode in season 4 is probably the most known (for a number of episodes a kid was bullied harshly till he finally reached breaking point and snapped in Part 1. In Part 2 he brought one of his parents guns to school to shoot the bullies but it ended up delving even darker. In particular focusing on how far someone can be pushed.)

ReplyDeleteI truly think that they're writing Oliver as brooding is because Amell couldn't pull the classic Oliver off
Dude they wrote Oliver this way (not just because the series was inspired by Nolan Batman) but because that's how a guy with the experiences that Oliver's had would act after returning home. Emotionally numb and shutoff. And because taking inspiration from Green Arrow Year One. That's still a bullshit claim to me, since Amell's only showed more layers and expressions and emotions through Oliver throughout the series as he's become more human and will keep doing so until he becomes like the comic book Green Arrow (which he will in four, kinda the whole point of 1-3 to get Queen to become a hero and embrace humanity again). Hell even the different versions of Oliver thoughtout the series are vastly different in terms of vocal pitch and body language alone. Guy's good at this. And I'm pumped for that.

ReplyDeleteDegrassi has a long history of cast turnovers, with the original cast becoming adults when the TNG kids came in. So yeah, no need to rewatch past episodes to follow the new show. It will retain some kids from before, but it will be just another one of its turnovers. :)
