Dark Matter - Episode 3 - Review: “Electric”
28 Jun 2015
AM Dark Matter ReviewsUnfortunately Lindsey will not be able to join you this week for a review of this episode, so she has asked me to fill in for her. Lindsey should be rejoining you next week, but for now let’s have some fun discussing this episode.
Dark Matter had a very strong start to the series with the first two episodes, and now that the compulsory introductions are over the show is free to begin exploring and expanding its universe. This show has proven that it has a strong grasp of who these characters are and this episode does an outstanding job of further developing them. Already we’re beginning to see character growth as their shared experiences are having an effect on all of them.
The episode opens with the ship in FTL and The Android diligently keeping watch as she updates the crew on their status. She is very stiff and, well, android like, which is important given the journey she goes on throughout this episode. Three, no surprise, doesn’t really appreciate her updates. In fact, he doesn’t appreciate anything to do with this crew or ship. He wants them to sell the ship, split the profits, and part ways as soon as they hit the space station. Unfortunately for him he is the only one of that opinion. Two informs all of them that they are going to restock and refuel and anyone that doesn’t want to continue on is free to go. It was very character appropriate for her to shut him down and declare how things are going to be. Everyone else agrees with her and one by one they leave Three to clean up after breakfast. Despite his bravado I don't think he'll ever be able to part ways with this crew. To much of his understanding of his life is tied to them and when push comes to shove he keeps fighting beside them.
Because I’d be remiss not to mention this, how cool is the fish tank in the mess hall? I’ve watched a lot of space operas in my life and I do believe this is the first time I’ve ever seen a fish tank in space. It should feel completely out of place, but instead it is so skillfully integrated into the room that it just seems right that it is there.
Five is sort of the odd one out as she’s the only one who knows absolutely nothing about who she was prior to the memory wipe. She is also the youngest which puts her interests on a very opposite spectrum from the others. Five spends the early part of this episode trying to find someone who will do something with her. This does beg us to wonder how she came to be living with this crew as she seems kind of out of place. I agree with One and think it is safe to say that the personalities of whom these characters used to be are still firmly in place, which makes the bonds and natural connections between characters fun to decipher. In terms of Five, Two and Six definitely have the closest bond to her as they both seem compelled to protect her time and time again. I’m not sure they even understand why, but I look forward to uncovering these answers right alongside them. Two jumps between a maternal bond and a big sister bond with her while Six has become increasingly paternal towards her. We’re learning things right along with the crew which means every tidbit of information we get is exciting and intriguing at the same time. I look forward to every episode eagerly waiting for more pieces to fit into the puzzle.
Back to Five, once she realizes she’s going to have to entertain herself she does what any curious teenager would do, she goes into the most uncharted and dangerous place she can, the vents. She seems at home in the vents which has me wondering if she was a willing stowaway. When she discovers the deceased boy, whose image will not soon leave me, one can’t help but wonder what their connection was. Could she and the dead boy have been friends and stowed away together, but only she was discovered? Could he have been shot trying to save her? Was he shot because he was trying to hurt her? The possible scenarios are too numerous to mention, but I look forward to learning about the mysterious stowaway.
Practical as ever, Two just wants to jettison him as soon as they can because nothing would draw more attention than them docking at the space station with a dead body on board. It may seem coldhearted, but it is a choice she has to make as the leader. It is truly fascinating to watch Two operate as she seems to be constantly thinking and trying to be at least two steps ahead. More now than ever Two knows she must look into Five's mysterious dreams and she has to start by trying to verify any detail within them to solidify if these dreams are indeed actually memories. She knows the The Android is the one she can undoubtedly count on and the one she can trust to keep quiet. She has to keep secrets from the crew in order to protect them. It is certainly not something she enjoys, but it is what she has to do.
While Two and The Android are working on the secret operation Three is again plotting to be rid of the ship. In his mind Four is his strongest ally, but Four is determined to stay until he knows more about who he is. However, should a time come when he is no longer happy with the arrangement he prefers to keep the ship for himself. Four doesn’t say much, but when he does he is very well spoken and to the point. That kind of cunning mixed with his fighting skills make him one of the most dangerous amongst them. I must comment on how well Alex Mallari Jr. handles the weapons Four has to wield. They become an extension of his limbs and he manages to skillfully handle them while flawlessly delivering his lines. That is what I call skill because delivering lines is hard enough when you’re not wielding dangerous weapons.
Five can’t help but realize how close in age she is to the deceased boy. This has an effect on her which Six can see written all over her face. He tries to comfort her and in this moment his bond with Five is at its most paternal. It is this paternal love that I think causes Five to cave and spill her secret to Six.
Six cares for Five and he seems to respect Two, but that doesn’t stop him from angrily confronting Two for making Five keep that secret. Two is the leader and to do that she has to sometimes make these tough decisions. As Two was addressing the crew and talking about looking into the validity of Five’s dream she shares this meaningful moment with Five as she makes eye contact with her. She does all of this with her hands on her guns. My reading of this is that Two doesn’t know how the others will react to Five and if it came to it she was willing to do anything necessary to protect Five. Some people have said that Two’s relationship with Five is maternal, but I’m still reading it as mostly a big sister bond with some maternal moments here and there. One thing is for sure, the way Two deals with Five goes beyond that of a Captain protecting a member of her crew.
Three is still struggling to find an ally on board and Four is still his best option. He finally shares the information about the mystery door with Four and with the writers now involving him in this I’m wondering if the item in his box may indeed actually be a key. Four’s hesitation with his hand on the consul tells me he may have realized what I theorized above. Only time will reveal the answer to all of us, but I’m as curious as Three to find out what mystery lies behind that door.
One has to be given credit for thinking up the plan to turn The Android into a lie detector. This was a fun break from the drama as the interviews were intercut. I appreciate that the show is staying true to Two’s refusal to use the name the computer gave her. Portia may have been who she is, but Two is who she is now. Five’s answer of “chocolate protein pudding day”, in regards to what day of the week it is, was such a teenager response and the best answer of all of them. Three and his dislike of being touched is interesting and I hope we get to see some reason behind that when and if he regains any memories.
The last half of the episode does a great job in portraying how each crew member either perceives The Android or the bond they’ve already formed with her. When gamma radiation threatens the ship it is The Android who is the first one to step up to risk her existence to save the ship and crew. I do believe it is the first time Three says anything nice to her. This is also the scene that drew a lot of questions when promo pictures were released of The Android in a space suit. I must admit, I was a bit confused by it too, but the explanation was well thought out and it added some great interactions to the scene. Two seemed genuinely hesitant to let The Android partake on this dangerous mission. Up until now an argument could have been made that Two was just keeping The Android close because of her connection to the ship, but it becomes quite obvious in this moment that we are witnessing the early days of a friendship beginning. The airlock exchange is a great example of this growing bond:
Two: “You just get back in one piece. We can’t do this without you.”
The Android: “Well, you can.”
Multiple times throughout the EVA sequence Two treats The Android in a very human way. She wants to see her crewmember, and friend, make it back inside safely. On The Android’s side she knows that not completing this mission is not an option. She must fix the ship to save her crew and she’s willing to sacrifice her own existence for that. At this point The Android knows the risk she is taking which is why she left them with the FTL work around. To me, this showed a very human like understanding. With each interaction the crew has with The Android they are beginning to treat her less like an android and more like one of them and definitely more human. One even makes sure The Android has unnecessary oxygen working. Three being the exception to all this, but we’ll get to him later.
I really appreciated the scene between Five and Six as Five keeps vigil on the bridge. Six is quick to acknowledge that The Android isn’t like other androids and she is special. When Five says “…she’s just like the rest of us” I think it hit a cord for Six and I think this plays an important part in the risk he takes to try and save her after she is hit by the electrical pulse. I believe the whole point of The Androids near sacrifice was to solidify that she is just like the others and the show accomplished that. Human or not they are all in this together.
When The Android is hit the look of distress on Two’s face is tangible. Melissa made a great choice in having Two bow her head and cover her eyes. That is the reaction of knowing someone you care about is in trouble. It was natural and extremely instinctual and it played very well on screen.
The majority of the crew could so easily treat her as dispensable, as Three does, but they treat her as if she were human. I believe Three was genuine in his gratefulness for the sacrifice she made for them, but he also has no interest in risking his life for her. He has something in his past that has left him opposed to androids, and I don’t think his android hate is entirely due to his original encounter with her. I’m not sure how he actually managed to get Four to support him on this mutinous attempt, but Four should have known better then to cross Two. Five really came through for Two and the others by getting the door to the bridge open. She also showed great foresight in knowing to disarm Three, but I think it was a little premature for her to reveal her secret entrance into the rooms.
One and Six’s willingness to go out on that dangerous EVA walk to rescue The Android showed their true character. She isn’t just a machine, but a fellow crewmember. The musical score that played over this whole scene was daunting and really helped sell the peril of the situation. I was holding my breath as the electrical charge started to ramp up again and they raced back into the airlock. I gasped as they fell into the airlock after Six got hit and watched in anticipation as One and Five desperately tried to save their friends. The terror One and Five were experiencing was palpable and beautifully played by Marc and Jodelle.
The story came full circle when The Android was revived and she instantly went and helped Six. The episode started off with The Android stiff and somewhat isolated from the crew and ended with her being closer to, most of them, then ever. She is still as stiff as ever in the way she moves, but the way she is reacting and interacting with the crew is starting to take on human like qualities. Willingness to sacrifice oneself, for her, was a new concept, but by the end of the exchange she seemed to realize that she and the crew aren’t all that different. They did for her what she was doing for them. She is ever evolving and Six is right, she’s not like other androids, and that is a very good thing. Anyone who has ever seen Zoie Palmer’s other work knows she has this innate ability to infuse humor into her characters. I honestly didn’t think she’d be able to do that given the constraints of the character, but through her performance she gives The Android the humor that makes this character so endearing to viewers.
The Android: “You risked your lives to save mine. I don’t understand.”
One: “You would have done the same for us.”
The Android: “In fact I did.”
The mystery of who wiped their memories remains as unknown as ever. Two has to guide the crew into acceptance of never knowing the answer to that question. It is frustrating, but they have to move on and deal with the numerous other problems that keep being thrown at them.
Two is dealing with the stress of the day by beating up a punching bag. This scene does a good job in showing the audience what Two is capable of and alerts everyone to not piss off Melissa. Joseph Mallozzi has said in multiple interviews that most of the stuff we see Two doing is actually Melissa and after that scene I believe it. I almost felt bad for that punching bag given the way she was laying into it.
I’m beginning to think Marc may have a clause in his contract that requires him to kiss someone in every episode. So far One is two for three in the kiss department. The chemistry between One and Two has been building since the premiere, but I actually wish they had held off on this for a bit longer. Every show needs a good romantic paring in it, but I feel like these characters are too new to their lives to be hooking up already. But if they had to throw the kiss at us now I’m glad they made it awkward on both sides. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see this connection between One and Two grow into something more, but I hope they take any future steps much slower. Two seemed genuinely confused by the kiss, but also somehow quite intrigued. It should be fun to watch the awkwardness between them while they try and make sense of these residual feelings between them.
We end the episode with two interesting discoveries. The first being the gun Five found in the box the boy had. It seemed almost familiar to her. Could our innocent tech guru have a dark past of her own? The second is the most important of all as we get our first introduction to a space station bar. Someone is looking for the Raza and her crew and as I was watching this scene I knew I recognized the voice, but I was still shocked when we came face to face with what I presume is the real Jace. Since there is another Jace I’m willing to bet there are other versions of all the Raza crew.
Now we are left to wonder what that big cliffhanger means. Who is the real Jace? Do they all have doppelgangers? Could it be that our crew are the doppelgangers? If that is the case then who are they really? Are the Raza crew clones? I throw out that theory because I’ve watched far too much Orphan Black and that show now has me paranoid. We know the miners from last week thought the Raza were a race of lizard like monsters and in Earth terms lizards, like chameleons, can blend into their surroundings. Could the other version of our crew, and I gather we’ll meet more doppelgangers then just Jace, actually be shape shifters. Was the Raza crew framed? It was a great way to end the episode, but also a supremely annoying ending once you realize you have to wait a week to get any answers.
This was an episode I enjoyed from beginning to end. It was a great relationship exploration episode as we learned more about each character and their bonds to the others. The Android got her much deserved place in the spotlight and she really came through for the crew. One, Two, Five, and Six were true to their loyal natures while Three and Four remain the wildcards. I hope we get more ship based episodes because I am enjoying watching these characters have personal interactions with each other. With that said, I’m also intrigued to see them explore space station culture and watch them encounter other planets and people.
Next week the promo revealed that One and Three find themselves in a tough spot when they are captured by Jace. Can Two and the rest of the crew rally to save them in time?
Leave your thoughts and theories about this episode below. This episode left us with a lot of questions so be sure to hit the comments section below and let’s help each other through this long week by theorizing what it all means.
Tune into SyFy at 10pm next Friday to hopefully find out some answers to all the questions this episode left us with. Then be sure to return to SpoilerTV for an in-depth review from Lindsey.
It's going to be a long wait until next Friday, so what does everyone think about that cliffhanger? Are they clones? Doppelgangers? The theories are numerous, so lets see who can get the closets to the truth.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!!! I don't know what to think about the crew now, especially after the last couple mins of this episode. Possibly they are clones? Or Androids themselves? And they don't know it because they have no memories???
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about the android thing too. That alone would majorly screw with Three and his understanding of himself. However, we did see Six bleed this week, so maybe not android. It's near impossible to figure out which of a million different paths this show is going to take. That's one of the things I love is that this show surprises me. So many shows are predictable and this one brings originality and surprises. The only bad thing is having to wait a week between episodes.
ReplyDeleteAre Space Operas prone to having clones? Did you like when Six called Five "the kid" and Two corrected him by saying "you mean Five"?
ReplyDeleteI'd been thinking this since the episode ended, if they're clones but have no memories, do you think because there's nothing to remember? That the pods did nothing but kept them asleep and that's all?
ReplyDeleteI really liked the episode. The exploration of crew personalities was really enjoyable and very well executed. I really loved getting to know the Android more and Zoie Palmer stole every scene she was in. I can't get over how someone can infuse such humor and personality into an Android. She has certainly accomplished that. I have to say I am not a fan of the whole One and Two relationship. I think the show started way to early trying to create romance, when I want to get to know these people better. I don't feel the chemistry at all between One and Two. I rather they focus on fleshing out the crew, learning about them, and solving some of these very interesting mysteries. I can definitely do without the romance right now.
ReplyDeleteOn the memory question, it's possible but given that The Android discovered a code in the system to wipe their memories I think they actually did lose them. If they are clones then I think they've been so such a long time that they have lived their own lives. Their personalities tell me they had lives and relationships before the wipe.
ReplyDeleteAlways feel free to doubt because it causes fun debates. I'm glad you were as stunned as I was by that cliffhanger. I absolutely love how this show keeps surprising me.
Space operas are prone to everything. Never underestimate what can be incorporated into a space opera.
ReplyDeleteI loved that scene where Two corrected Six. Five is the name she goes by and Two wants to make sure that is protected. I also believe Two has accepted their lives prior to the memory wipe don't matter anymore. She is Two and Five is Five and whatever name they believe could be theirs from a past life is no longer valid.
Zoie is a master at all she does and I am so glad the show has given her the freedom to breathe so much life into The Android. I look forward to watch her character as the season progresses.
ReplyDeleteI've sensed the chemistry between One and Two since the beginning, so the kiss wasn't a big surprise to me. What I didn't like was how fast they moved that connection along. They need to slow it down and focus more on character exploration before going down the romance road.
Yeah i guess that makes sense, yeah me too, i think this is the first show i've in seen in years that keeps surprising me. I can usually predict what's going to happen but on this show i basically can't predict ANYTHING LOL.
ReplyDeleteThe fact this show can keep surprising us is a hallmark of a great writing staff and strong leadership. I can't wait to watch this story unfold.
ReplyDeleteYou know in all honesty they should've made her a cyborg, for an android she acts way too human for my taste. Androids are not even close to human and she has human qualities: humor, loyalty and a willingness to sacrifice herself, cyborgs on the other hand are half-human which would make more sense to having those qualities. Don't get me wrong the actress is great in the role but that keeps bugging me, i've seen androids before and they act robotic and not human. Yeah i've seen One and Two's chemistry from the pilot as well, it came out more when One was going down to the mining colony and they talked and she had her hand in his cheek.
ReplyDeleteSame here
ReplyDeleteI think this ep did a good job of making the android a part of the crew.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the kiss goes, what bugged me is they are already setting up One as the guy with a girl in every port. He just kissed a miner and now he's making the moves on Two. Blah. The other crew seem to have no interest in Two that way.
Five seems to have the most secrets. Did she shoot that kid or was he her boyfriend? We don't know yet. Was the kid the one who actually sabotaged their memories? Maybe he died afterward? Who knows. Lots of questions.
I love how they ended the ep with the real Jace, or is he? What if he's the clone? Are the crew really aliens? Clones? Twins? We don't know. Will more duplicates show up? And what's behind the door? Great questions. And I can't wait for the next new ep.
Thanks for stepping in @Aimee Hicks
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost well done Aimee really great review and now to the super crazy
ReplyDeletetheories part.
I personally agree with you that our crew are clones of the real Raza crew.
First I thought that the original Raza Crew created our crew
themselves to send their clones on a suicide mission so fake their own deaths
or something like that but after watching the
promo for next week this seems very unlikely. The real Jace wants to
know why One looks exactly like him which squashed this first theory
of mine.
But after thinking about it for a while now I came up with two theories about what
happened and both of them have to do with the fact that the Android
couldn't restore Fives file. I think that Five is the only one them
who isn't a clone but instead is the reason for the memory wipe.
So 1.
Someone created them
to steal the Raza and rescue Five (maybe even the dead child) from
the real crew. While I like this theory I then have no idea why a member
of our crew would have decided to wipe the memories of the others.
Or 2.
The real Raza crew
was hired to free Five from somewhere and the person who held her
captive send our crew to bring her back. While I like this theory
less it makes more sense in regard of why one of them planed to wipe
the memories of the crew and then accidently wiped himeself with the
rest of them.
In this scenario Five is the most likly to have
done it, so they woudn't bring her back to wherever she was held
captive. It would also make sense with the skillset she showed so
far.
So Two also could have done it, it's like you sad in your
review she obviously feels very protective of Five so maybe she
couldn't go threw with their mission and instead wiped the memories
of her crew to protect Five.
While this is all really far fetched I really need to give probs to the writers of the
show, it's been a long time since I spent so much time on speculating
about a tv show.
This show, and this episode in particular, are ripe for speculation. I have been wondering about Two's involvement as well. This version of her has proven she isn't afraid to make tough choices and if she realized she couldn't protect Five from the others then I can see her willingly risking her own memories to save Five. Two is also the most opposed to her former identity. Given that their personalities keep showing through this seems like it is leftover from before the wipe. I don't think Two liked who she had become. I truly believe the dream Five told Two in the premiere belonged to Two because on some primal level it seemed to connect with her. I think she has a very protective nature and if I am right about the dream then Five could be a substitute for her brother. As a big sister I know I would go to the ends of the Earth for my brother and do anything to protect him. If we go with the theory that the crew was hired to kidnap Five then once they had her Two couldn't see another kid in her care be hurt so she took these drastic measures. Two is a very strong candidate for memory wipe candidate.
ReplyDeleteFive is also quite likely given her tech skills, but that may also take her out of the running because she is so good. Would she have screwed up the code if she had written it? Did she realize the good in them and think a memory wipe would give them a second chance?
I could keep going on the possibilities but I'll leave it at this for now. I loved your theories, so keep them coming. We have to do something to get us through until Friday and speculating seems like a great way to pass the time.
No problem, Andy. I am always glad to help. I'll gladly look after the Dark Matter reviews until Lindsey can return.
ReplyDeleteMaybe kissing is One's forgotten skill. He seems to be very good at it. Maybe he was a charmer in his past life and he would charm women while the rest of the crew completed a job. Could be in their pasts One and Two were in a relationship and this is just risidual from that. In which case the kiss was more instinctual then planned, but still in that scenario I wish they had waited longer before throwing the kiss at us. I don't have a problem with the pairing just the timing of the kiss. It was far to soon in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe questions surrounding Five are numerous. Why isn't she on the crew manifest? Was she maybe a prisoner? Was she kidnapped? Is she as dangerous as the others? How does someone so young know so much about tech and human biology? So many questions.
I'm eagerly awaiting next week to get answers about Jace. I think it was One who said in the promo about not knowing why Jace has his face. No matter who said it I'm still largely in need of some answers. This episode left us with so many questions. I think next week is going to go a long way in helping us understand our crew.
I like YOU reviewing better LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat bugs me is that these people seem so heroic, so IS it possible that the crew are clones?
ReplyDeleteHave you ever watched Andromeda? That show had an AI in both computer form and android form. She grew to be quite human even to the point of learning to love. I believe going the android route was a good choice as being android will allow her to learn and evolve. Cyborg wouldn't quite fit in with being so connected to the ship as the guses is she was designed to be as one with the ship. That is something human biology would have made near impossible. She had to have that connection with the ship but she also had to have an ability to learn and evolve which are hallmarks of an android.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that compliment and absolutely loved writing this review, but this is Lindsey's show to review so I have to bow out upon her return. I'll always be around to cover when she needs me to and you can still enjoy my previews when we get advanced copies.
ReplyDeleteHuh that's pretty interesting and feel cheesy saying this but beautiful in a way LOL. Was the android character a main character?
ReplyDeleteYeah i understand, did you get a screener for episode 4?
ReplyDeleteIt is entirely possible that they simply diverged from the personalities of the originals and rebelled against the originals. I like my chameleon theory because of the miners thinking the Raza crew were a race of lizard like beings. Maybe the crew we know and love are the originals who stole back their ship from the imposter and the imposter have been giving them a bad wrap. So many possibilities.
ReplyDeleteNot yet. If we get one you can rest assured I'll get a preview up as fast as possible. I got that last preview up the same day I got my hands on the screener. I'm to excited about this show to waste much time when it comes to engaging with our readers about it.
ReplyDeleteOne and Two having had a relationship in their past life? Interesting, i actually forgot that Five knows about human biology. I don't know how i could, that was her first creepy moment LOL, i think she's just a prodigy, it's really not that rare. There's kid prodigies all over right? Actually i think it was CORSO asking One why he has his face because it looks like One and Three are tied up together.
ReplyDeleteWhoa SAME day? Crazy! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh yeah Andromeda was a regular played by Lexa Doig. If you love Dark Matter you'll love Andromeda. If you can find it to watch I highly recommend it.
ReplyDeleteRebelling against their "originals" as in personalities or LITERAL originals? As in their "creators" in a way? I don't know, Corso seems pretty pissed at the Raza.
ReplyDeleteLexa Doig as in LEXA DOIG? As in Sonya Valentina from Continuum?!
ReplyDeleteSame day because I was so excited about the episode I wanted to let others in on the fun of it. Screeners can be spotty so just because we got one for this episode does not mean we will get one for the next episode, but when we get them I promise you I will preview you as fast as my fingers can type.
ReplyDeleteBoth to be honest. If we work with a theory involving our crew being clones then they would have inevitably inherited the characteristics of the originals. In which case they evolved and rebelled against their creators. The memory wipe and Five saying they were dangerous could have been one of them realizing the only chance they had to be their own people is if they got a fresh start with no memories. Just one of a million theories.
ReplyDeleteThanks LOL
ReplyDeleteWell technically a clone is their own person aren't they? In Kyle XY Kyle and Jessi were clones but they were still their own people with their own thoughts and personalities. Although i like your theory about them thinking the only way they could become their own people was ironically by not knowing who they were.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah Clones are absolutely their own personalities a really great showing of Clones were in the Clone Wars animated series in which the clones gave themselves names and did what they could to differentiate them from their "Brothers"(all the other clones)
ReplyDeleteThe one and only. Yet another reason for you to try and find Andromeda to watch. It was a fun space opera with all kinds of action and aliens.
ReplyDeleteDid it end on a cliffhanger?
ReplyDeleteOr "sisters" right? they WERE girl clones too right?
ReplyDeleteNo, they knew it was likely their last season so they had a satisfying ending. It was a really good show and Lexa got to do some amazing things. She even met her husband Michael Shanks when he guest starred on the show. If you are a sci-fi and space opera fan it is a must watch.
ReplyDeleteNope the entire Army was cloned from the DNA of the same man.
ReplyDeleteWell aren't they sexist LOL, why not clone women as well? Not that cloning's okay but still.
ReplyDeleteYeah you right Five probably wouldn't have messed the virus up and she did say that it wasn't her own dream she had about wiping their memories. I really like the idea that Two hated her life and wanted to save Five no matter the consequences but when the time came she wasn't able to kill her crew, so she decides to wipe them all instead.
ReplyDeleteI think they may have been from the Parallel Universe :)
ReplyDeleteMy wild guess is that One was a spy, sent to replace Jace to infiltrate the real Raza crew and implant the memory-wipe virus so that they would be easier to capture. Which means that the face he's wearing now isn't his face, it was changed with surgery so we have no idea what he really looks like. At first, I thought twin, but Jace is asking One why he has his face in the promo for next weeks episode, so that's off the shelf. Although, this possibility seems pretty obvious, so it's probably wrong. Not to mention the fact that the rest of the Raza crew, excluding Three and Four, seem like decent people, which I don't think they'd be if they were really evil pirates.
ReplyDeleteI really like my Two theory just because I think it would be an interesting twist, but I have a feeling the real culprit will be the least likely suspect. I'm really excited to find out who wiped their memories and why. This show has thrown so many surprises at us so far it's near impossible to predict exactly which route they are going to take, but theorizing about it is fun and helps pass the time.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, the real Jace Corso said at the end of the episode that he has unfinished business with someONE on the crew, not the whole crew, so it must be some kind of personal thing. However, in the promo, he's asking One why he has his face, son maybe he knows nothing about One, implying that his unfinished business is with someone else entirely. My guess is on Two.
ReplyDeleteAs a final point, I find myself wondering how the Android fits into the story, she just seems too innocent and cheery to be working with a crew of murderous thugs. Although, she was a lot less friendly when she woke up. That look she gave One when she was gonna kill him was a little too intense for a mere security protocol...
I love wild theories.
I just watched the promo again and Jace seems genuinely surprised to see One in possession of the same face. Two seems like she could have left some enemies behind in her old life, so that's a solid theory. If there is a real Jace then I'm willing to bet there are real versions of Two, Three, Four, and Six. I think Five may be the only original within the crew. My question is why did our crew choose these faces? If they are clones, or something else, then who created them to look like these bandits and why?
ReplyDeleteThe Android is a bit of a wildcard. She seems original to the Raza, but her reaction to the crew in the beginning was very hostile. If our crew were the original crew I can't imagine them putting The Android into stasis with such a hostile program running. Something tells me someone subdue her and locked her away without time to correct her programming.
What I'm trying to understand is Two's connection to the ship. She seems very familiar with all of its components and operations. A thief wouldn't be that familiar with the ship. Four has his practice room and they all have rooms that seem to have been theirs prior to stasis. They seem very at home, even without their memories, on the Raza. So which set is the true crew of the Raza? Our numbered crew or the real versions? Confusing, but so fun to try and sort out. It's like an epic puzzle.
A puzzle that gives us headaches LOL, they do seem very at home, does One also?
ReplyDelete"Her" crew, so you think she was their leader in their past life before, that her being leader to this crew isn't new?
ReplyDeleteHonestly i love that theory, but why don't use that theory for the whole crew?
ReplyDeleteOne seems to have his place and he definitely has some sort of part history with Two. What that may be is up for debate. If it wasn't for his bond with Two I'd be willing to say he's the odd man out that doesn't belong, but that bond seems to say he's been with this crew for quite sometime.
ReplyDeleteHeadache or no I love any show that can still manage to surprise me and Dark Matter is full of surprises.
Mainly because Two is the only one who seems to be having a truly disgusted reaction to the identity the ships file bestowed on her. The way she was staring at the screen at the start of Episode 2 seemed like she was making some kind of primal connection with her past life and her subconscious told her that life wasn't worth living. She's been fighting against who Portia was and fighting to be Two. She's running from that past life, so that could be a sign that she had nothing to lose by risking her own memories by wiping them. Two is very smart and very computer oriented. She may not be as good as Five with tech stuff, but that could be why the code was so crudely written.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious who those wrap sheets belong to. Is it our crew or the real versions of them?
I appreciate this Kyle XY reference. I loved that show and hated when it was cancelled. That show had so much more story to tell.
ReplyDeleteYou do make a good point about Jessie and Kyle being clones and yet being different people. It's the same thing with Orphan Black, they are clones but very unique in who they have become. Clones would be an interesting route for Dark Matter to go and if they do go that route I can't wait to learn the how and why of it. Loving this mysterious puzzle the show has presented us with.
Awesome you watched Kyle XY? That was a shot in the dark, yeah the clone route would really be cool go down with. Did you want Kyle with Jessi or amanda?
ReplyDeleteI loved Kyle XY. I went back and forth on which one I wanted Kyle with, but I think he was better suite for Amanda. I am a big Jaimie Alexander who played Jessi, but I think if the show had continued they would have hooked her up with someone else. Jaimie's new show Blindspot shows a lot of promise from the promos. It's got that same mysterious element Kyle XY did, but in a more adult format.
ReplyDeleteI guess that makes sense, i'm going with the "real" versions of them because like i said our crew seem way too heroic to have those offenses to their names. Even Three and Four as much as they're jerks they still didn't mean harm to the rest of the crew so yeah if they're clones i'm going with the rap sheets belonging to the real ones.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite interested to meet the real versions of the other characters. I really want them to meet up with Portia because I would love to see her and Two battle it out. That would be a truly epic fight. I also want to know if Portia is as strong and confidant of a leader as Two is.
ReplyDeletethat was a great episode!!!
ReplyDeleteCool, no i think Kyle and Jessi were soulmates, i mean even their necklaces glew the same color. Yeah it definitely does aside from being sci-fi and her having enhanced abilities LOL
ReplyDeleteYou sound very confident in that they're clones, would Portia even know how to fight? LOL. Maybe the originals weren't as efficient as the clones in hand-to-hand combat and they were just petty thieves and killers.
ReplyDeleteMaybe One is the one like you said that started everything and took the rest of the crew away from their originals?
ReplyDeleteI'm not ruling out a scifi element to Blindspot because there is no good explanation for the tattoos on her body. I'm really looking forward to that show and watching them evolve its mythology.
ReplyDeleteI'm not so confident about that, One doesn't seem like the take charge type. If anyone took the crew away from a bad situation it had to have been Two.
ReplyDeleteBoth of the episodes that Michael guest starred in of Andromeda were great episodes. I loved the whole show and the interesting character dynamics. The way they evolved Rommie was well payed as the seasons went along.
ReplyDeleteSo was One maybe someone she fell in love with and she couldn't leave him? Who do you think One was in his past life then? Scientist, or security guard of something, someone low-level?
ReplyDeleteWhy "Rommie"?
ReplyDeleteI'm not confident in any of my theories because I can't for the life of me figure out which route Dark Matter is going to take. Leaving the episode on that cliffhanger was cruel. It was an amazing cliffhanger, but the week long wait for answers is torture.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of clones, but I also like the idea of a chameleon like race that has shape shifted to appear like our crew. So many great theories and the likelihood is the show will throw something completely unexpected at us. If any of us guess this right it'd be by pure dumb luck.
I hope so but for now i'm guessing it's a conspiracy drama like The Blacklist, it'll be good to see Jaimie back on TV full time.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not a scientist, he's given us no indication of being gifted in science. It's possible he was a liaison who helped broker the crew jobs through the space stations they moved through. He seems very good with negotiating and talking to people as he did with the miners.
ReplyDeleteIt totally is! So the chameleon being the real ones our crew? It would TOTALLY be dumb luck LOL. I actually miss being able to predict SOMETHING but no luck heh.
ReplyDeleteSPOILERS MUCH, Aimee Hicks (just kidding................thanks for the review by the way)! In order to have a "true conspiracy" you require three parts/parties ie: 1) a "motive", 2) a "means", and 3) a "manipulator"......................"2"/Portia, "5"/the Kid, and the "Android". Just a theory of mine thus far. 4 THE PALMERIST/PALMER - BOTS, I am Nobody!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's true but by saying he helped broken jobs you're kind of debunking your clone theory LOL.
ReplyDeleteRobots can't manipulate
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily, he can be a clone and still broker jobs for the crew. Being a clone doesn't stop them from becoming their own people.
ReplyDeleteIf the others are chameleons then actually our crew are the real versions and the others are the impostors. I think Dark Matter just enjoys messing with us by leaving us with such a surprising cliffhanger.
ReplyDeleteBut they can conceal information (deceive) ie: Hal - 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Ashe - Ridley Scott's Alien, or Ex Machina - 2015........"Robots can't manipulate"...........either you're joking or you need to get out more, fellow poster (all 3 are excellent films I recommend)! Nobody 4 EVER!!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the one who erased their memories?
ReplyDeleteActually, in a clone scenario, I think the wrap sheets belong to the originals. In a chameleon scenario the wrap sheets belong to the impostors, ie not the Raza crew we've come to know. It's all very confusing.
ReplyDeleteWhich still leads us to the million dollar question of who that is.
ReplyDeleteSo in your theory what jobs did One broker?
ReplyDeleteThis is far off but maybe Ferrous? Maybe they feared the crew would be able to overthrow them, Continuum style?
ReplyDeleteBy "Android" being the "manipulator" I mean in the capacity of Hal or Ashe (see post below for details). Both were instructed to follow orders of manipulation, trickery, and/or deception with varying degrees of execution ie: Hal couldn't comprehend his instructions and went "homicidal", where as Ashe followed his instructs to the letter even attempting "homicide" the deception. "2"/Portia has be tight with "5" and the "Android" sense this started ie: keeping secrets about "5" dreams/memories, she told the crew that "Android" was safe, because her files had been "erased" ("2"/Portia's word is all we have as proof this was done), and finally the exchange between "2" and "Android,"............2/Portia "We can't do this without you!" Android,"..........you can."The "Android" is in the "know" and overseeing things run smoothly ie: the "manipulator" This is just a theory, but I do believe it cares merit. Nobody 4 LATER!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it has to be someone that was on board because Five has the memory. Not ruling out that one of them could have been bought off by Ferris, but I doubt it. Perhaps one of them was having second thoughts about the attack on the miners and the only way they thought to aid them was to wipe the memories of the other crew members. The only ones that have showed that level of compassion are One, Two, Five, and Six. I'd rule out Six because, while he can fly, but he's given us no reason to believe he has any knowledge of computer coding. Five wouldn't have messed up the code. That leaves One and Two. One did have that pendant, but again he's shown no signs of even having moderate computer coding skills. I can't see Two sabotaging her own ship unless she was trying to protect someone she was very close to and she wasn't close to the miners.
ReplyDeleteThe real answer is probably going to be something completely mind boggling and insanely awesome.
Definitely, regretted the Ferrous comment as soon as i said it LOL
ReplyDeleteI really like that explanation of your theory. Two and The Android are protecting Five. How would Two know to not wipe The Android's memories with no memories of her own? I truly believe Two is in the same position as the others with not memory of her life prior to waking up.
ReplyDeleteI do believe it is significant that The Android has been standing so faithfully at Two's side and that Two has been so active in sheltering Five. On some primal level Five is significant to Two and if Two was the one who executed the mind wipe then I theorize it could have had to do with Five somehow.
I do love your theory though because it does reason why the ladies are all so closely bonded. There was a lot of meaning behind the Two and The Android exchange in the airlock, so it is as plausible a theory as the rest of the ones being thrown out in this post.
Fringe reference?
ReplyDeleteI don't know. One actually doesn't seem to belong at all; he's not familiar with the ship, he couldn't figure out the life support system, and his room doesn't seem to have any personal effects that indicate it's really his. Two understands the ship, Three seems very familiar with Bubba and seems to have a connection to the door, Four has his weapons room, Five knows her way around the vents, which seems to be unique to her and not something she picked up from the crews memories, Six can fly the Marauder, and The Android has a neural link to the ship. Everyone seems to belong except One. His bond with Two could be nothing more than a dude finding a lady attractive, which he has displayed already with the miner lady. No past relationship there.
