Dark Matter - Episode 3 - Preview: “Just Like The Rest Of Us”
26 Jun 2015
AM Dark Matter ReviewsDark Matter has returned scifi fans to space in the most epic and gallant way possible. The first two episodes took the characters on a journey of discovery and adventure. In that time we have witnessed the team learn to work together as they explore the vast universe they’ve been reborn into and face all of its perils. We have been given details about these characters and watched them struggle with pasts they can’t remember. We have witnessed their failures and watched proudly during their successes. This is a rare show that transports the viewer onto the ship and immerses us in the world these characters embody. Every viewer is a part of the Raza crew for that one hour where we get to live in this epic world.
Episode 3 is almost entirely a ship episode as all of the action keeps the crew on board and I hope we get many more episodes like this one because this cast is at their best together. The cast turns in exceptionally strong performances across the board. Without further ado here is a little of what you can expect to see from each character and the very talented actors behind them in this weeks episode:
One/Pretty Boy has a pretty ingenious thought that helps the crew overcome the recurring problem of learning how to trust when you have no memory of your comrades. Episode 2 gave us a good idea of his true personality and the events of this week serve to further evolve him. He and Two have a interesting encounter that poses a lot of questions. Marc has found the perfect way to balance the struggle One keeps experiencing as he fights against who the computer told him he is and whom he wants to be.
Two/Boss Lady is thrown into the dilemma so many other captains have had to face, how much to tell the crew and how much to keep to herself. We’ve known from moment one that she cares about her crew, but this week we get multiple examples of what she is willing to do for these people. In the short five days the crew has been awake she’s forged bonds that give us a great insight into who I believe she was before the memory wipe. Melissa continues to be the poster child for why casting directors need to take more risks on unknown actors because so much untapped talent is out there just waiting to be given a chance to land on our screens. In this episode Two has to deal with a lot and Melissa handles the emotional scenes as expertly as she handles the action ones. We get to see Two training and I’m fairly certain no one will be messing with Two or Melissa anytime soon after watching it.
Three/Sunshine is up to his usual antics this week. He does some pretty stupid stuff that not everyone agrees with. Yet, at the end of the day I’m getting the impression he’s more bark than bite, but only time will tell. Three does discover one thing he can’t stand and it’s a rather interesting insight to this badass warrior. Anthony dominates the scenes he is in and you can’t help but enjoy his performance no matter how much of a jerk Three is being in the moment.
Four/Slashy McStabberson gives several great examples of just how dangerous he could be if you crossed him. He proves this week that he will stand with the team, but should that change things could get intense. We get to see Four make a poor choice this week and yet he finds a brilliant way to justify the choice. The whole thing is very true to character. Watch for a fun scene were Four gets to train with his weapons. It is made even more enjoyable by the way Alex handles Four’s weapons with such ease that they seem an extension of his limbs. That kind of fluidity with on screen weapons is rare.
Five/Kid struggles to find her place within the team and in the process stumbles across something that proves to be the catalyst for a good portion of the events in this episode. The show continues to grow and accentuate the bonds she has with Two and Six. They both care and look out for her in ways that seem to date back to when they had their memories. I am enjoying the sisterly bond that she and Two have and the friendship she has formed with Six. She returns their loyalty with an act that aids those who have supported her. Jodelle has a lot to do in this episode and she rises to the challenge of everything that is thrown at her. I enjoy how focused she is during the few quiet moments Five experiences as it brings this nice Zen quality to the character and adds to her intrigue.
Six/Tiny continues his trend of being willing to risk his life for others. He will take a massive risk for a member of the team and I suggest taking a deep breath before this sequence starts because you won’t be able to breathe again until resolution is reached. Roger has such a massive resume to his name that you’d think he would have played just about every character possible by now, but I don’t think he’s ever played a character quite like Six. He is a master at character work and only he could play a character like Six that requires the character to be strong, humble, and courageous all in the same moment.
The Android remains a point of contention amongst the crew. This week she proves her worth and risks everything to protect her crew. For those who have been wondering about the space suit seen in the promo, fret no longer as it comes with a very good and well thought out explanation. The ship and crew could theoretically go on without The Android and they may just have to. As The Android interacts more with the crew Zoie is doing a phenomenal job of finding this perfect balance between robotic motion and human emotion. She has at least one poignant and important moment with every member of the crew. Cross your fingers and hope that The Android survives her heroic adventure.
The crew continues on their journey of trying to reconcile who they are with who they have been told they are. The final seconds of the episode throw the fans and the crew a very unexpected curveball. Something we have been previously told is either not the entire story or a complete lie. The final seconds are critical to the story and its upcoming trajectory, so prepare for that moment because it will blow the foundation out from under your feet. It was such an interesting twist that the smile that spread across my face was completely involuntary. The moment provides one of those rare moments of surprise that have become so hard to find in TV these days. The complexity of this show gets a serious jolt and I cannot wait to see how this plays out in the coming weeks. Speaking of upcoming episodes, I think the crew is about to journey to their first space station so buckle up for what promises to be a wild adventure.
Here are some things I think the characters are wondering and I think these are good points for fans to think on. Think them over then hit the comments with your thoughts.
Do we believe the computer file is telling the whole story or are we missing some important piece to this puzzle? Can they overcome these mysterious pasts to redeem themselves? Do they need to redeem themselves or should they just be looking to the future?
Missing this episode is not an option, so schedule your time in front of your TV’s at 10pm on Friday and tune into SyFy for this electric episode. Be sure to return to SpoilerTV after the episode airs for Lindsey Salazar’s detailed review and I’ll be back with your in-depth previews at every opportunity.
Take a stab at guessing who says each of the below quotes. The first person to guess them all right will get to pick one character to get an extra tidbit of information about.
Notable Quotes:
-“That’s why I like her; she’s just like the rest of us.”

Are you excited for this episode? What are your theories for the journey the team is on? Anyone want to tackle the quotes? An extra character spoiler tidbit for whomever guesses all of them right.
ReplyDeleteI think the bond between 2 and 5 is not sisterly but maternal on the part of 2. I know Melissa O'Neil is not old enough to have a 15 year old child (assuming that is the age of 5) but the character of 2 seems older than the age of the actress.
ReplyDeleteMy other theory is, since 1 is the character that appears to be furthest from what the criminal records indicate, he was actually the worst of the worst, a cold blooded sociopath. The stuff he found in the quarters (and it is possible that the quarters are not his), could be souvenirs from the people that he has killed, for example the emblem/necklace that was the same as the female miner on the planet.
I can't quite wrap my head around calling the Two and Five relationship maternal. I think it's a very big sister/littler sister type of bond and I feel like the actresses are playing it that way. Melissa does bring a great maturity to Two that does make her seem older.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to learn more about all of the characters, but One definitely becomes much more intriguing because of this episode. I like your theories though and time will only tell us who these characters were before the memory wipe.
I agree but l wouldn't be shocked if they revealed shes her mother or even sister they look alike enough.
ReplyDeleteThree -“That’s why I like her; she’s just like the rest of us.”
ReplyDeleteFour -“It was very satisfying.”
One -“Alright, that’s fine…it’s what I wanted anyway…a little peace and quiet.”
Two -“I need you to do something for me…and I’m going to need you to keep quiet about it.”
Six -“Pretty crazy day.” “Can’t remember one that wasn’t.”
If we guess wrong can we try again?
Very true, they do look quite alike. I get the impression the dream Five mentioned to Two in the premiere was from Two's memory. In which case she has a brother out in the universe somewhere so she could have a sister. Would be a very interesting twist but I don't know if they will go that route.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately those were not right, but keep trying. You did get one of them right. Try as many times as you like. First person to guess right gets to choose who they get the extra spoiler about. No limit on tries.
ReplyDeleteOkay. This is really hard since we don't know these characters very well yet. Can you say if the last quote is from one person or two people talking to each other. I'm kind of confused. How about this:
ReplyDeleteFive -“That’s why I like her; she’s just like the rest of us.”
Android -“It was very satisfying.”
One -“Alright, that’s fine…it’s what I wanted anyway…a little peace and quiet.”
Three -“I need you to do something for me…and I’m going to need you to keep quiet about it.”
Two -“Pretty crazy day.” “Can’t remember one that wasn’t.”
The way these characters act is making it really hard to believe that computer file, you know that whole "nature versus nurture" thing. These people are heroes through and through, even Three as much as a jerk as he can be, he's still a hero. What will we feel for these characters after the cliffhanger?
ReplyDeleteThey've only spent 5 days with each other?! How is it possible that they already feel like they've together for years? Who does Two train with? One, Six?
ReplyDeleteYou were close that time. The last quote is from 2 characters having a conversation but I'll settle if you can guess 1 of them right but bonus points of respect if you can get them both.
ReplyDeleteHint: The one you had right in the first post you changed in the last one.
Only 5 days and yes it does feel like much longer given how well they work together. To answer who Two trains with would ruin the fun of the scene, but no one with a brain will mess with Melissa after watching it.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to give anything away, but you will have a whole new perspective about everything after the cliffhanger.
ReplyDeleteI think it was One or Six that gave Three his nickname but I'm not positive of that. I think One knew challenging Two wasn't warranted, but he wanted his voice to be heard so he said that to get her attention.
ReplyDeleteMan you've got me addicted now. How about this one and can you tell me how many I got right?:
ReplyDeleteFive-“That’s why I like her; she’s just like the rest of us.”
Android -“It was very satisfying.”
Two -“Alright, that’s fine…it’s what I wanted anyway…a little peace and quiet.”
Three -“I need you to do something for me…and I’m going to need you to keep
quiet about it.”
Six -“Pretty crazy day.” Four-“Can’t remember one that wasn’t.”
I'll give it a go.
ReplyDeleteFive -“That’s why I like her; she’s just like the rest of us.”
The Android -“It was very satisfying.”
Three -“Alright, that’s fine…it’s what I wanted anyway…a little peace and quiet.”
Two -“I need you to do something for me…and I’m going to need you to keep quiet about it.”
One -“Pretty crazy day.” Six-“Can’t remember one that wasn’t.”
The ship and crew may be able to go on without the Android, bu I certainly can't.
ReplyDeleteI know my earlier guesses will help whoever gets it right. Hopefully they are Team Android for the bonus information. Lol!! That will be my character this time.
ReplyDeleteWell 2 would have been a teen mother, think Gilmore Girls where the mother and daughter are almost more like best friends than the traditional mother/daughter relationship. I can even see a scenario where in their previous lives, the rest of the crew believes 5 to be the sister of 2 and not her daughter because it is safer for the rest of the world to think they are sisters. I do agree that the behavior by 2 could be interpreted as either sisterly or maternal.
ReplyDeleteYeah it does, aw but okay LOL
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good. Can't wait. "Dark Matter" is my favorite summer show right now since Orphan Black is on hiatus too.
ReplyDeleteSo how does that make you feel towards One and Two?
ReplyDeleteEVERYTHING?! Okay now you're scaring me LOL
ReplyDeleteI'd go with Six as a brother-like relationship and Two as a mother figure
ReplyDeleteSilver, you got all but the last quote right and even that you got half right. That makes you the winner. Who would you like the extra spoiler about?
ReplyDeleteAnyone care to take another guess at getting both sides of the final quote right? Silver has already got you halfway there. A basic spoiler of my choosing if someone can guess it.
If anyone wants to get really into it I'll hand out 1 more character chosen spoiler if anyone can guess correctly who the top 4 quotes are being spoken to. The last one doesn't count since the characters are talking to each other.
Tanks for the preview! The acting from each of them really has been great so far, I'm impressed. I do love that they have to deal with who they want to be and who they've been told they are. That's the most interesting part for me so far. Ship episodes were always my favourite in Stargate and Star Trek so I'm looking forward to this one :) And another twist at the end! I can't wait :)
ReplyDeleteI hate it whenever Orphan Black goes off for the year because it is such a long wait until the next season. Dark Matter is definitely a great show to help fill that massive void and this is a great episode.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I won!? I never win. A spoiler about the Android, please and thank you!
ReplyDeleteI agree, she is so adorable. That picture with her in the space suit is so adorable, she looks like a kid reluctantly dressing up for halloween
ReplyDeleteWell win you did, so congratulations! Now you just made all The Android fans winners as well. This bonus spoiler builds on what I alluded to above.
ReplyDeleteWhile the whole team is in peril this week it is The Android who finds herself in the most danger. She willingly puts herself in this position without hesitation and without the need of a direct order. It is a very human like moment for her and it earns her some very important allies who launch a dangerous mission to aid her when the mission goes horrifically wrong. Before this mission is over two lives will be on the line and The Android is one of them. Look for more than one crew member to have an emotional reaction to The Android's sacrifice.
Be sure to tune in Friday because this is a great episode and it has some great character building moments.
I am so stupidly excited right now, you have no idea!
ReplyDeleteI aim to please. You have reason to be excited. This is a great episode and Zoie fans will really enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteShip episodes are the bread and butter or space operas, so I hope we get many more of these types of episodes. The cliffhanger shocked me and it was the best kind of shock.
ReplyDeleteYou've really got me excited for Friday's episode now. Huge fan of Zoie and love her as the Android!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're excited. As a Zoie fan myself I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.
ReplyDeleteSo is Android for SURE an Android and not a cyborg? I mean making sure Five is okay, having socializing skills and now maybe sacrificing herself all sound human and Android's not half human.
ReplyDeleteI thought bottle episodes were sort of hated? You're not exaggerating right? Sometimes showrunners hype an episode and it's good but as not much as they say it is. I'm not saying you ARE doing that, it feels like i'm being mean to you, just don't want to be disappointed you know?
ReplyDeleteMe too. I love The Android.
ReplyDeleteYou're not being even slightly mean, so no worries. TV in general has given us all reason to be just a little skeptical. Everyone interprets things differently and to me this was a really good episode and I think many others will enjoy it too. Will some not like it? Someone always doesn't like something so probably, but I think you'll enjoy it. Bottle episodes can be done really well and to me this one was done really well.
ReplyDeletePhew! I would've thought me doubting would come out as me being mean, yeah TV DOES give us reasons to be skeptical. I like what you said about surprises being crazy rare in TV shows nowadays, every time a show surprises me i'm happy because i can basically predict everything and that's boring. So i'm glad this episode will surprise me, so this bottle episode won't feel claustrophobic? I've never seen a bottle episode in a ship because this is my first Space Opera, i usually see bottle episode in a shop or apartment complex, never in a spaceship.
ReplyDeleteJust because she's mechanical doesn't mean she can't feel emotion or have (very terribly hilarious) socializing skills. If she's advanced enough, which she seems to be, it's not much of a stretch.
ReplyDeleteIt's BECAUSE she's mechanical she can't feel emotions, it's just not possible. Only cyborgs can or robots made with human organs but never androids.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree. Emotions are just chemicals and she is a biosynthetic lifeform. She may not feel them in the same way humans do, but I think they're there. But I guess we'll see when the show comes back on.
ReplyDeleteI think that too, about the possible relation between Two and Five. And about the necklace you're on the right way, in the comics thats exactly the conclusion One reachs.
ReplyDeleteI really think they were not as bad as the records say.
ReplyDeleteWait he thinks he's a serial killer in the comics?
ReplyDeleteWow very scientific of you LOL, but how is she "bio" anything if she's part of the ship?
ReplyDeleteEveryone's been saying that, could it be possible?
ReplyDeleteThank you, I try to use at least one big word a day. Honestly, I'm not sure about her general makeup, but when she was getting rebooted, Two said that 'her biosynthetic physiology is incredibly similar to that of our ships outer hull.' Which makes me curious about both her and the ship itself. So from what I've gathered, she's at least a little biological, but it's synthetic biology, not necessarily human. Combine that with the concept of emotions-as-chemicals and I believe she can feel things. I mean it's all just guesswork at this point, but that's half the fun.
ReplyDeleteHuh now that you put it that way i guess i could see her "feel" emotions, she'd be the first android i've seen on television to be able to but still, and yeah that's true LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they were not born evil (no one seems to be a sociopath) but a lot of things can drive a person on the wrong side.
ReplyDeleteYeah same feeling, the data says they're murderous scumbags but their action show that they're good guys, even Three with jackass attitude still helps. Speaking of that "born evil" you put, One said it on the "This Season On..." funny enough LOL.
ReplyDeleteI guess Fives skills will remain mysterious for now. Putting a name on it makes it less thrilling.
ReplyDeleteTrue
ReplyDeleteTonight's episode does give some more detail into this gift Five has.
ReplyDeleteI could be wrong, but wasn't it Two that had the longest wrap sheet?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, at this point I just kinda want her to feel anger and punch Three in the face, but I'm cool with whatever. Although, she does say something was 'very satisfying', so a girl can dream.
ReplyDeleteBased on the record, they think the worst abous theirselves before.
ReplyDeleteMakes sense
ReplyDeleteLOL totally
ReplyDeleteNo it was actually One, i kept waiting for the Android to stop saying offenses but she kept on going. So One was basically the worst of the bunch in their past.
ReplyDeleteActually One and Two are tied for number of offenses..
ReplyDeleteOne: Murder, Assault, Kidnapping, Trafficking, Theft
Two: Murder, Assault, Arson, Theft, Piracy
Three: Murder, Assault, Kidnapping, Piracy
Four: Murder, Assault, Piracy
Six: Murder, Assault, Smuggling
Remember these for tonight.
I haven't watched the episode yet but I'll give this a go: My theory is they are runaways, not criminals. Five was in fact the "princess" she dreamt she was and the crew were loyal to her and her father and they tried to "save" he from whoever was after her (I believe she mentioned it was her stepmother...?).
ReplyDeleteThe dead boy Five found in the cargo, in that sneak peek, was her brother....
And the Android attacked them when they found her before she was wiped, because she is in tune with the ship, and they pretty much commandeered it for their getaway....
And I'll probably be proven 100% wrong once I get to see the episode in a couple of hours...
Think about Robin Hood. He is a thief who robbery from the rich to give to the poor people. The most of the people could say he is a heroe, but anyone who is rich will say he is the worst kind of people.
ReplyDeleteThink about Robin Hood. He robbery from the rich to give to the poor people. The most of the people could say he is a heroe, but anyone who is rich will say he is the worst kind of people.
ReplyDeleteDo you think she really has a gift? I have doubts. I think the same way someone erasied their memories, it's possible that something has happened to her.
ReplyDeleteI hope so the show has been getting more and more interesting every weak.
ReplyDelete
