UNIVERSAL CABLE PRODUCTIONS AND SYFY ANNOUNCE DEVELOPMENT OF "CHANNEL ZERO" HORROR ANTHOLOGY SERIES FROM MAX LANDIS AND NICK ANTOSCA
UNIVERSAL CITY, CA – June 30, 2015 – Universal Cable Productions (UCP) and Syfy today announced the development of “Channel Zero” with Nick Antosca (“Hannibal,” "Friday the 13th") set to write the script, and Max Landis (“Chronicle,” “American Ultra") set to produce and helm creative direction along with Antosca.
“Channel Zero” will feature a unique setup, with each season focusing on a new story. The first season of the horror anthology series for Syfy will be based on “Candle Cove” by Kris Straub, a story that originates from the user-generated internet horror phenomenon known as creepypasta. It tells the story of a mysterious children’s television show from the 1980s and the show’s role in a series of murders and one man's dark secret.
“’Channel Zero: Candle Cove’ is a season long imaginative and chilling horror anthology,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President of Development, Universal Cable Productions. “With its first story deriving from the cult favorite creepypasta, and the visionary minds of Landis and Antosca, it is elevated horror at its best. I’m still haunted by the first episode. It’s a chilling immersive ride.”
Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President, Original Content for Syfy, said, “’Channel Zero: Candle Cove’ will feature contemporary storytelling and an innovative perspective that underscores Syfy’s commitment to bringing smart and provocative programming to a whole new generation of sci fi fans.”
"We love the idea of doing seasons of TV like rich, character-driven horror novels, and for ‘Channel Zero: Candle Cove’ we’ve expanded this great short story ‘Candle Cove’ into something really nightmarish and haunting and surreal,” said Landis and Antosca. “We can’t wait to dig in deeper and bring this to life with Syfy and Universal Cable Productions.”
“Channel Zero” joins an array of current high profile UCP and Syfy collaborations, including “Childhood’s End,” the first-ever adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s iconic novel starring Charles Dance, Mike Vogel and Julian McMahon; “Brave New World,” based on Aldous Huxley’s classic novel which is being developed alongside Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television; “The Magicians,” based on Lev Grossman’s popular trilogy; and Wes Craven’s “The People Under The Stairs,” based on the 1991 film; and “We Are All Completely Fine,” based on book by Daryl Gregory

Well I'm a horror fan so I'm intrigued for now. I'm really loving a lot of the stuff SyFy are putting out there now.
ReplyDeleteIsn't this just the Twilight Zone under a new name?
ReplyDeleteAnthology creepypasta show? So you mean a silly version of Twilight Zone? Pass.
ReplyDeleteNo idea, I've never seen The Twilight Zone.
ReplyDeleteAs usual SYFY promises many things but rarely delivers
ReplyDeleteI refuse to believe these words.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know what it's about, I just know it was horror themed and really weird.
ReplyDeleteTwilight Zone was an episodic anthology series, and not every episode was based on horror. This is a single season horror anthology series.
ReplyDeleteNot every episode of the Twilight Zone was horror themed.
ReplyDeleteI know but didn't a lot of the episodes have a horror vibe, or at the very least a creepy vibe.
ReplyDeleteMe neither, i just know the premise is a horror anthology.
ReplyDeleteCreepy is probably a good term for many of the episodes. The show was able to address social issues in a science fiction context, and many of the episodes have an unsettling quality.
ReplyDeleteI guess THAT'S different, but it's basically the same thing except this one's strictly horror.
ReplyDeleteMore like American Horror Story under a new name.
ReplyDeleteIt's been delivering with 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter and Killjoys.
ReplyDeleteSweet, I was wondering when SyFy would be getting into the anthology business.
ReplyDeleteOh i guess that works better.
ReplyDeleteTwilight Zone
ReplyDelete12 Monkeys and Dark Matter have been my favourites so far too. Killjoys isn't SyFy though.
ReplyDeleteExcept maybe they wont have the OTT acting style employed on AHS or the fundamental lack of understanding of the horror genre.
ReplyDeleteThey just air repeats of Twilight Zone, plus that's anthology by episode not season. ;) They've never had an original Twilight Zone series.
ReplyDeleteOh right, i guess i just meant shows that AIR on Syfy, not specifically ORIGINAL to Syfy.
ReplyDeleteWell there can be lots of shows from one genre but all still be different.
ReplyDeleteWhere did it originally air?
ReplyDeleteAh, well in that case I'd add Killjoys and Continuum as well :)
ReplyDeleteCBS, over 50 years ago. And a syndicated one in the 80s, and in 2002 and UPN had the most recent remake which only lasted a season (or two maybe I can't quite recall remember).
ReplyDeleteI DID add Killjoys LOL, oh my God i CANNOT believe i forgot about Continuum, i guess i'm just not used to not seeing Continuum in the summer. I can't believe it's on September instead of this summer.
ReplyDeleteHuh i didn't expect it to be on CBS, it doesn't really fit, i thought it'd be FOX.
ReplyDeleteI meant add it to my list lol. Ikr it's such a long wait for Continuum. I hope it's really good though since it's the last season.
ReplyDeleteBack when Twilight Zone was airing there were only three American networks, CBS, NBC, and ABC. Fox didn't come about until the 80s, UPN and The WB 1995.
ReplyDeletefor you perhaps. For me (and many others) they don't. And killjoys is not their show.
ReplyDeleteOh my bad LOL, and that it has a SATISFYING conclusion, it's awesome that you watch Continuum. How did you feel when Kiera accepted that she's a present-dayer and teaming up with Liber8?
ReplyDeleteHuh i thought the Big 4 always existed.
ReplyDeleteNope FOX launched October 1986. :)
ReplyDeleteWow that's surprising, cool.
ReplyDeleteBeing on Syfy, it'll be a disappointing showcase of under-acting.
ReplyDeleteDoes Syfy still do regular marathons of Twilight Zone? I don't pay attention anymore. Regardless of Syfy, it's also streaming on Netflix, and I'm sure easy to obtain elsewhere, too.
ReplyDeleteI'd highly recommend checking out a handful of random episodes. Familiarize yourself with the the style. Twilight Zone is pretty much essential television viewing.
I can't believe you haven't seen at least a few episodes! It's one of those pop culture entries that's almost completely unavoidable.
Wasn't Helix *supposed* to be an anthology series?
ReplyDeleteHm I don't recall exactly, I remember something vaguely that the show would feature a new locale each season, didn't that happen? I stopped watching a few eps into season 1 but the clips I saw made it seem like the show relocated for the second year.
ReplyDeleteHey Ivan Mike Vogel is gonna star in Childhood's end series that will air this year and it may be bad news for his character Barbie in UTD.
ReplyDeleteI regrettably made it through the whole first season. But yeah, there was a different locale in the second season. I could've sworn there was a few interviews stating that it'd be a different locale/virus/cast each season. Either I'm wrong, or somebody lied.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what my point is.
ReplyDeleteI don't live in the U.S. so I've no idea if they still air it. It's actually been on my list for ages I've just never gotten around to trying it.
ReplyDeleteIt was a new locale but there were certain characters from the first season who were carried over to the second season.
ReplyDeleteFox traced its origins to the long-defunct network DuMont where some of its surviving affiliate stations formed part of what it is now Fox Broadcasting.
ReplyDeleteDominion, Defiance, and Z-Nation.
ReplyDeleteThose are rating duds though. I liked Dark Matter but it looked cheap IMO.
ReplyDeleteNO!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCould be interesting...
ReplyDelete*nods* They've been working really hard to up their game. And it's definitely paying off. Kudos to them!
ReplyDeleteI'm so in.
