The second episode of season 3 continued to ponder the same questions introduced in the season premiere: how can Vincent and Catherine make their relationship work among obstacles both typical and highly unusual? What happened to J.T. as a result of the life-saving medicine? How will he and Tess settle into their relationship and continue evolving as people? What's up with the new crop of supernatural people supposedly out to cause major trouble? And why was Heather upgraded to a series regular? I think most of these matters saw satisfactory progress in this episode.
I'm going to use some lyrics from Jessie J.'s "Keep us Together" to supplement this review, as that song tackles the same topic (making a relationship work despite unavoidable hurdles) that we saw in this episode.
"It's cool if we ain't got everything figured out
Cause love ain't got all the answers baby
This place we're in, they don't ever really talk about it
But that don't mean we can't navigate it..."*
Commitment phobia? There's a couple of factors that have to reassure us, despite Vincent's skittish behavior while moving in with Cat. Firstly, I'm pretty sure he must want to spend the rest of his life with her, or he wouldn't have proposed. Secondly, epic love, people! That's not going anywhere. So why was Vincent so unnerved as Catherine went through her kind of adorable, type A reactions to him moving his stuff in? Well, sometimes the fear that something as stereotypical as commitment phobia or cold feet will kick in is just as terrifying as actually experiencing those problems. I think that's what we saw in Vincent this week. The worry that he could start to feel they were moving too fast.
"It's unpredictable, but I feel so good about it
A mountain, but we can climb it
Ain't no way to get around it
Take this open road
And I wanna get it right
We can't win if we don't try
And I'm scared, I can't deny"*
Actually, this part of the episode was pretty hilarious, and I loved the sweet way VinCat resolved this issue by the end of the hour. They did move so fast from finally being able to be together, to getting engaged, to moving in, that both probably just needed to get their breath back. However, Vincent is going to have to get those beast-outs under control...maybe if he changes more often, it won't sneak up on him like that?
"Well, if it ain't enough
Are we just gonna give up?It ain't easy trying to stay in love
Are we gonna walk out, when it rains?
Tell me we got enough of love to keep us together
Say we got enough of love to keep us together..."*
An electrifying new frenemy. This week's antagonist was a man with a tumor who had likely been experimented on by the shadowy organization who are giving people special abilities. Like Vincent back in the day, the electricity-powered semi-baddie was out of control because he had no one to turn to and couldn't calm down long enough to stop doing damage to everyone around him. It's a good thing Vincent and Catherine were around to stop his chaotic violence and even help him out, and while it was disturbing to see him hijack J.T.'s bloodstream to steal some of that mysterious miracle cure, at least this gave us some new insight into J.T.'s situation - more on which to follow.
So now we've seen a man with somewhat unspecified super-strength (in last week's episode) and one with the ability to zap NYC silly. The rogue's gallery is starting to look like one from X-Men, and while I still wish we had already gotten a lot more details on where these guys are coming from and why they were created, what we've seen so far is intriguing. Is each episode going to feature an antagonist with a different super-power? Because that's a fun premise (and one with which Kristin Kreuk is quite familiar from the first few seasons of Smallville), but we need to know more about the Big Bad behind it all to feel a real structure to the larger story arc of Season 3. However, this is hardly the first time the writers have procrastinated on showing us where the ongoing plot was actually going. Gabe turned out to be the biggest villain of Season 2, and the writers didn't even admit that this was the case until close to the end of the season. I'm hoping that the shorter episode order will force the writers to keep the story more tightly paced this time - we shall see.
One aspect that was brilliant, once again, about this episode: Vincent and Catherine working a case together. I was particularly impressed by the highly intelligent way Vincent theorized about how the electrical powers might work. The combination of Vincent's medical knowledge and detective skills is amazing.
J.T. stops selling himself short. Tess made some really interesting points about the way J.T. still acts like a shy, insecure professor when in reality, he's accomplished some amazing things and grown into kind of a badass in his own right. Most notably, J.T. is pretty much the best friend you could have. I couldn't stop smiling when he put Tess' brother in his place. By the way, how awful do those brothers seem?! I hope Tess does make captain, because she'd be great at it, and that would also be quite convenient for the Fab Four, let's face it! Agent Thomas hinted that J.T. is someone to "watch out for," and later the agent was scratched off, presumably by the aforementioned, as yet unseen Big Bads. This is extremely ominous and has me incredibly curious as to what will be revealed about J.T. Has he just gotten tougher and more focused, or are superhuman abilities in his future?
Hi, Heather. What are you doing here, Heather? I must confess this has me almost as confused as the slowness of the mythology's explanation this season. That said, Heather is delightful and cute, and I really enjoyed her interactions with Vincent and Catherine in this episode. I just think she needs to be pulled more into the main plotline (which itself needs more development). And what's with the writers ending her engagement before we ever saw her fiancé? It just seems a little weird after all those repeated mentions of the character, and makes me wonder if that's the last we will hear of it. In order for Heather to become a nuanced, more centrally-placed character in the show's world, she needs more to do and to reveal more about herself. I'm sure it's coming soon, and I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks, Virginia, for another good review of S3 of #BATB. For a change, I find Heather delightful and a pleasure when she's in scenes with Vincent. I hope we see a lot more of them together. I loved everything about this ep, so I'm not going to get specific beyond saying what an incredible talent Jay Ryan is and how lucky we are to have him as our beast. S3 of BatB is perfection. @moonlightmania
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode which had everything - romance, excitement, and all the scary stuff these humans who've been given these super-human abilities have to offer. It keeps me mesmerized and it's heart pounding. I love the fact that Vincent has gone back to being a doctor and he's going to be awesome because of his beast abilities. I'd like to see Heather meet up with Vincent's fire fighter nephew, Aaron. It would be nice if they bring back Aaron now that Vincent is back to being in the "normal world" again. I think Heather and Aaron would make an adorable couple. I'm anxious to find out about what's going on with JT since he's been given the serum that saved his life. He admits to feeling different, but hasn't figured out in what way yet. I think Vincent is concerned since poor Agent Thomas told him to watch out for JT before the agent was shot dead in the hospital. Things are mounting up to come to an awesome climax I think. I love Vincent and Catherine together and hope there are more of those VinCat romantic moments. I hope Tess does make Captain, but I don't want to see a partner change for Cat because of Tess' promotion. Wondering how that will work out for both of them if that should happen and Tess is chosen to take the step up at the precinct. All in all, I've loved everything about S3 so far and know that this is going to be an exciting season for sure. I'm so happy VinCat are engaged to be married - and hoping we'll see a wedding at some point in this series. By the way Virginia, loved your review - you captured all the important details.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I agree with your points - I need to go back and rewatch some of the older episodes to refresh my memory on Vincent's nephew, but it would be so nice to see Heather find love again after being unceremoniously dumped by that sketchy fiancé. I'm also eager to see what's going on with J.T., if Tess will make captain and how that will change her working relationship with Cat, and of course eventually the VinCat wedding!
ReplyDeleteThank you :) I really find Heather to be a fun burst of bubbly energy and agree that she and Vincent were awesome in their scene together. I love that adorable type of humor that BatB does so well!
ReplyDeleteI think the episode where Vincent meets up with his nephew is the one where this crazy bomber and firestarter was blowing up buildings. It might have been in S2, but I can't remember what the name or number was. It was an exciting episode and that's when we met Aaron Keller, the handsome young fire fighter, and Vincent's nephew. He was just a baby when Vincent went off to Afghanistan and didn't recognize Vincent as being his uncle. Vincent and Cat were in pursuit of this bomber and Aaron was at the same scene as they were.

ReplyDeleteI loved this ep. sooo much. It was so much fun to watch. I was thoroughly entertained.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch TV to sit there and pick out the issues with the ep. ALL eps on every show have issues.
I'm truly amazed by Jay Ryan's talent, the guy can pull anything off and emotions abound in his face
I'm impressed
Yes, I remember that one! I want to rewatch them all from the beginning sometime, anyway :)
ReplyDeleteLove Jay Ryan's performance, and the show in general, as well. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, that's what I love to do too. Usually on a rainy Saturday (and if I don't have anything to do), I like to watch my #BATB DVD for a nice marathon. I never get tired of the episodes. :)
ReplyDeleteYour great insights gave me some ideas....
ReplyDeleteI don't we've heard the last of Mathew, Heather's fiance - it does seem weird they would cut him off so quickly (unless as many have predicted they are trying to free her up for a new love interest). I think the reason why he broke up with her is because he was one of the people recently experimented, maybe he was forced to break it off for a bigger goal\mission? That would be a good way to get Heather involved with the main story, as I can't see her joining the dream team anytime soon - what skills does she have to help them?
I'm also starting to think these experiments are simply medical experiments, trying to cure serious or mental illness, it's suspicious to me that each of the people given the serum had some type of illness. If that's what they are, it'll be interesting to see how badly these experiments went, and how Vincents medical experience will help.
I was also thinking something similar on Vincent's fear of moving in together. It's no wonder he's scared of commitment, of course he's worried about getting too close too fast. it almost feels a bit PTSD, or at least a reaction to all he has been through over the past few years? when you've lost almost everything over the past few years - your freedom, control and everyone in your life. it's no wonder he's worried he's going to lose something else if he gets too close.
Thanks for the great comments, and I totally agree with you guys about Heather's fiancé. It would make sense if he was part of the experiments and ended up having powers.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the fiance's anything, i think they decided that they there would be nothing to bring with that storyline and even Heather said that she barely knew him. So i don't think there's some big mystery to him so i think they scrapped that storyline. How did you make the accent in the "e" in fiance?
ReplyDeleteYou make some good points. I really hope the writers are not going with a new love interest with Heather. I already feel like the couples are becoming subplots of the show. I feel like The focus is onJT/T and VC but not on the four working together like previous. I hope we get back to that. I think you are right it could be that Matthew is being experimented on and it would really give a
ReplyDeleteHeather a purpose. Sometimes I feel like, the writers start something but then don't know where to go with it so drop it. It happens too often and it gets confusing and frustrating.
I think the fiancé was just a way to get the actress off the show for a while so that she could do a pilot. It hasn't been picked up so she's back, and I think we've seen the last of the fiancé.
ReplyDeleteIf you have a French keyboard, or a bilingual one you can get all the accents in. Mine's bilingual but I usually keep it set on English.
I really like that idea of Heathers fiancée being experiments on, I hope Heather gets a purpose rather than the sometimes annoying little sister. I like Heather but with only 13 episodes, everyone needs a reason for being there. I hope they are not planning a new love interest for Heather. I feel like another couple in the show would take even more away from VC,, it's not that I don't think JT or Tess or Heafher should, not have someone but now it feels like we see JT with Tess and Vincent with Catherine but we don't see all four working together like the last episodes of /S2 and S1.
ReplyDeleteWell it wasn't a pilot but Ravenswood and then it was so IDIOTICALLY given the "C" word. Oh ok so you can't put the accent in a normal keyboard? Actually you can't even say "seen" because we never even saw him LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'd say there's about a 50/50 shot that they either did or did not have a plan for the fiancé. They name-dropped him in so many Heather scenes, but that doesn't mean they won't unceremoniously ignore him forever now. We'll have to see. My computer just puts the apostrophe automatically. :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting point. It's a little awkward if they were going nowhere having her engaged and then not, but as long as they give Heather a decent subplot or connection to the main plot, she will be fine. Nicole Gale Anderson makes the character quite charming.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I totally agree on wanting the fab four working together again soon! The first two eps really did split them up into the two duos.
ReplyDeleteI don't even remember hearing her fiance's (lucky for having the accent on the "e") name last season.
ReplyDeleteWell i hate Tess so i'm glad she was separated from Vincat.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely loved this episode even more than the premiere ~ was such a laughfest from the get-go thanks to Jay's face morphing ~ I cannot get enough of him bringing the funny ~ also the baddie this week AND action was pure heartracing goodness! I never cared for Heather and was seriously rolling my eyes when I found out she would be a regular this season but I am glad to say she's turned me around in this ep ~ she and Vincent are my new favorite thing on BatB! OK 2 things bother me ~ Matthew dumping Heather ~ I agree with everyone below who said it's just plain fishy and I hope there's something more going on there such as him being one of the superfoes that caused him to dump Heather. The 2nd thing I don't get is the death of Agent Barnett ~ why keep him alive from 301 just to have him tell us nothing in 302? I hope if JT has powers it will turn him into SuperBrainiac so he can contribute to the team even more. I love love LOVE seeing my VinCat on missions together ~ Vincent sure gets a lot of time off from the hospital ;) I hope JT and Tess will not take up too much screentime as a couple I have zero interest in when I want to watch VinCat and find out about the mysterious new foes.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with you. 2 points that are my biggest beefs on s3 so far. The 4 leads have so much on screen chemistry together, I miss them being a bad ass team together. I feel like the lack of different character interactions could make the season a bit tedious. Once more is revealed about jts condition, my feeling is vincat will be his biggest support and they will be forced to work together again.
ReplyDeleteI also think right now jt and tess are taking away screen time, and focus away from vincat. Jt and Tess have way Less chemistry, they shouldn't be beauty/beast 2.0. I liked the set-up better in s1, where both were in relationships but quite a bit happened off screen. we have barely seen heather in a relationship and I don't think they are going to start now-My feeling is she will be used as a victim again, or unfortunately as bait, esp if Matthew is the enemy.
Or just fast forward to the best romantic parts.) I must have seen the kiss at the season 1 maskarade ball, or their first dance 100 times ;)
ReplyDeleteOh I definitely agree Debbie - that's what I usually do to - fast forward to their first kiss on the roof, the Maskarade Ball kiss, the first dance at Catherine's dad's wedding, and my favorite is the sexy scene in the Any Means Possible episode - wow - that scene was smoking. They sure do make a sexy and attractive couple.
ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not the only one! Recently I've added the infamous I love you Catherine from s2, and of course the shower scene. Like I always say, they are one of the best couples on TV today for so... Many reasons i hope the writers don't destroy that.
ReplyDeleteLoved it when Vincent said "I love you Catherine" and pulled out the rose from his jacket. The shower scene was very sexy too. I'm hoping these writers don't destroy those romantic scenes because when Sherri and Jennifer were writing some of the episodes that's when they added "the woman's touch" to the romantic scenes. Those scenes are what every woman dreams of having. So let's keep our fingers crossed they keep those scenes in every episode or at least every other episode.
ReplyDeleteYou know Debbie, I have the same feeling you do about Heather's fiancée. I too was thinking that because we haven't met up with him yet and suddenly he dumped her, maybe he is involved in these experiments somehow. Have we ever learned what he does for a living? Maybe all of this will come out when Catherine has a heart to heart talk with her sister. Right now, Cat has had her hands full what with becoming engaged and Vincent moving in. We have a lot to learn as these episodes progress and it's very exciting. Can't wait for the Thursday's epi which looks like it's going to be awesome. I also see that BATBVINCATfan has the same thought about Heather's fiancée also. Season 3 has just begun and already it's kicking into high gear.
ReplyDeleteI think Windows might allow accents with a numeric code. Try doing a google search on writing French accents on a PC.
